Incorporation of Learning Strategies into Web-based Autonomous Listening

The thesis introduces a comparative study of students'autonomous listening practice in a web-based autonomous learning center and the traditional teacher-dominated listening practice in a traditional language lab.The purpose of the study is to find how students'listening strategies differ in these two approaches and thereby to find which one better facilitates students'listening proficiency.

English Listening Strategies by College Students in Web-based Self-access Environment

The findings of the present study affirm the value of strategy training.On the one hand,it shows strategy training is valid and feasible.On the other hand,it will benefit both language teachers and students in that it not only helps students become more successful to learn a foreign language but also provides teachers a meaningful way to focus their efforts.However,strategy training in this thesis is tentative,so the present study is subject to several limitations owing to the author’s lack of the experience.

Research on Application of Metacognitive Strategy in English Listening in the Web-based Self-access Learning Environment

Metacognitive strategies are regarded as advanced strategies in all the learning strategies.This study focuses on the application of metacognitive strategies in English listening in the web-based self-access learning environment(WSLE) and tries to provide some references for those students and teachers in the vocational colleges.

Strategy-based Listening Instruction: Possibilities and Impossibilities

Due to the covert nature of the listening process, English listening comprehension has become a demanding challenge for most EFL learners in China. Strategy-based listening instruction, with its more accurate insight into the listening process, could be one of the timely answers to the challenges facing Chinese EFL listeners. Starting with a comprehensive review of theories and studies on strategy-based listening instruction in recent Western academia, the current paper critically examined the possible advantages and the theoretical and practical limitations of strategy-based listening instruction.

Advanced Strategies to Improve Performances of Molybdenum-Based Gas Sensors

Molybdenum-based materials have been intensively investigated for high-performance gas sensor applications.Particularly,molybdenum oxides and dichalcogenides nanostructures have been widely examined due to their tunable structural and physicochemical properties that meet sensor requirements.These materials have good durability,are naturally abundant,low cost,and have facile preparation,allowing scalable fabrication to fulfill the growing demand of susceptible sensor devices.Significant advances have been made in recent decades to design and fabricate various molybdenum oxides-and dichalcogenides-based sensing materials,though it is still challenging to achieve high performances.Therefore,many experimental and theoretical investigations have been devoted to exploring suitable approaches which can significantly enhance their gas sensing properties.This review comprehensively examines recent advanced strategies to improve the nanostructured molybdenum-based material performance for detecting harmful pollutants,dangerous gases,or even exhaled breath monitoring.The summary and future challenges to advance their gas sensing performances will also be presented.

Imaging characteristics and treatment strategies for carotid artery occlusion caused by skull base fracture

The internal carotid artery occlusion caused by head and neck trauma,also known as traumatic intracranial artery occlusion,is relatively rare clinically.Traumatic skull base fracture is a common complication of traumatic brain injury.Traumatic skull base fracture is one of the causes of traumatic internal carotid artery occlusion.If not detected early and treated in time,the prognosis of patients is poor.This editorial makes a relevant analysis of this disease.

Designing an automated FAQ answering system for farmers based on hybrid strategies

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to develop an automated frequently asked question(FAQ) answering system for farmers. This paper presents an approach for calculating the similarity between Chinese sentences based on hybrid strategies.Design/methodology/approach: We analyzed the factors influencing the successful matching between a user's question and a question-answer(QA) pair in the FAQ database. Our approach is based on a combination of multiple factors. Experiments were conducted to test the performance of our method.Findings: Experiments show that this proposed method has higher accuracy. Compared with similarity calculation based on TF-IDF,the sentence surface forms and the semantic relations,the proposed method based on hybrid strategies has a superior performance in precision,recall and F-measure value.Research limitations: The FAQ answering system is only capable of meeting users' demand for text retrieval at present. In the future,the system needs to be improved to meet users' demand for retrieving images and videos.Practical implications: This FAQ answering system will help farmers utilize agricultural information resources more efficiently.Originality/value: We design the algorithms for calculating similarity of Chinese sentences based on hybrid strategies,which integrate the question surface similarity,the question semantic similarity and the question-answer similarity based on latent semantic analysis(LSA) to find answers to a user's question.

A salt, detergent, and solvent tolerant protease from <i>Bacillus</i>sp. B001: Low-cost, easy-purified, and enhanced production by raw material based culture strategy

To enhance the protease production and decrease cost, corn flour and soy peptone were screened as cheap raw materials for the production of extracellular proteases by Bacillus strains. Their compositions in the medium suitable for enzyme production of Bacillus sp. B001 were optimized using statistical experiment designs. Under the optimized conditions, the protease production of Bacillus sp. B001 was stable at the stationary stage and reached to 63,200 U/mL, approximately 1.84-fold increase compared with that using the original medium. These improvements could be attributed to the release of the catabolite repression by crude materials corn flour and soy peptone which contained low level of available nutrients. Additionally, a highly pure protease which displayed excellent stability and compatibility with high salinity, commercial laundry detergents, and organic solvents, was rapidly obtained by two-step procedure involving ammonium sulphate precipitation and anion exchange from the fermentation cultures of B001 in the optimized medium. When the culture method applied to other Bacillus strains, their protease yields were all remarkably increased approximately 2.9 to 8.5 folds. In conclusion, a low-cost, easy-purified, and effective producing strategy using the cheap raw materials was developed here, representing a potential application for protease production in various Industrial processes.

Analysis of the impact of large scale seismic retrofitting strategies through the application of a vulnerability-based approach on traditional masonry buildings

The buildings＇ capacity to maintain minimum structural safety levels during natural disasters, such as earthquakes, is recognisably one of the aspects that most influence urban resilience. Moreover, the public investment in risk mitigation strategies is fimdamental, not only to promote social and urban and resilience, but also to limit consequent material, human and environmental losses. Despite the growing awareness of this issue, there is still a vast number of traditional masonry buildings spread throughout many European old city centres that lacks of adequate seismic resistance, requiring therefore urgent retrofitting interventions in order to both reduce their seismic vulnerability and to cope with the increased seismic requirements of recent code standards. Thus, this paper aims at contributing to mitigate the social and economic impacts of earthquake damage scenarios through the development of vulnerability-based comparative analysis of some of the most popularretrofitting techniques applied after the 1998 Azores earthquake. The influence of each technique individually and globally studied resorting to a seismic vulnerability index methodology integrated into a GIS tool and damage and loss scenarios are constructed and critically discussed. Finally, the economic balance resulting from the implementation of that techniques are also examined.

Strategic Thinking for Sustainable Development of Mining-Based Cities in China

Cities based on mining are distinctive from other cities in China. Their heavy dependence on minerals, a relatively undiversified industrial structure, seriously damaged ecological environment and the rather low degree of openness have all reduced their competitiveness, and severely constrained and hindered their sustainable development. In this paper the authors will study mining-based cities from the perspective of sustainable development, first by having a critical review of their features, and then by researching into strategic options to support their sustainable development.

The Effectiveness of Strategies-based Instruction on Postgraduates' English Vocabulary Learning

This ten-week quasi-experimental study was undertaken to explore the effectiveness of strategies-based vocabulary instruction on English vocabulary learning of postgraduate learners.By the questionnaires and vocabulary tests administered before and after the instruction,the experimental group and the control group were compared to find out whether reading comprehension plus SBI method was more effective than reading only method in postgraduates' English vocabulary learning.

Climate Change Community-Based and Ecosystem-Based Adaptation Strategies in Selected Coastal Barangays in Masinloc, Zambales, Philippines

Climate change continues to intensify existing disaster risks and vulnerabilities in the Philippines. Thus, implementation of climate change adaptation strategies is vital to counter the effects of climate change. It is in this context that this study was undertaken to analyze the need or urgency to adopt community and ecosystem-based adaptation strategies among selected coastal barangays (villages) of Masinloc, Zambales, Philippines. Various methods of data collection were utilized such as secondary data collection, primary data collection through household survey, key informant interviews, and focus group. Results of the study indicate that in terms of community-based adaptation strategies, all of the seven barangays in Masinloc have moderate necessity. However, only Barangays Bani and Collat have high adaptation capacity in terms of infrastructure and disaster preparedness. The execution of several community-based adaptation strategies helps these barangays to respond immediately and appropriately to the moderate risk posed by floods and storm surges. On the other hand, in terms of ecosystem-based adaptation strategies, all of the seven barangays have moderate necessity which implies that they have moderate vulnerability and risk to flood and storm surge but have high adaptation capacity in terms of the conservation and protection of coastal resources (mangroves and sea grasses). The barangays implemented the necessary ecosystem-based adaptation mechanisms that they might need in the future. This only means that when they are faced with disaster, the local communities are prepared to respond appropriately and to cope up with the effects of extreme weather events which lead to floods and storm surge. Even though most of the ecosystem-based adaptation strategies are conducted by the seven barangays, there are several community-based adaptation strategies that are still lacking which will protect them from the effect of floods and storm surges. Hence, carrying out the missing adaptation strategies, both community-based and ecosystem-based, will help in improving the adaptive capacity of the affected barangays and will help them become more resilient to the amplified effects of climate change.

Cluster Based Strategy to Improve Competitiveness of Rare Earth Industry in China——Taking Emerging Rare Earth Industry Cluster in Baotou As An Example

China′s rare earth industry has shown its strong competence, but notably this competence is mostly based on the comparative advantages in natural resources and production costs that will not provide a long-term momentum for the growth of the industrial competitiveness. It has become an urgent task now for China′s rare earth industry to improve its competitiveness through adjusting the product structure and enhancing the technological application, to gain much healthier and more sustainable growth in the future. This paper aims to present a new development strategy based on the industry cluster theory to improve the competitiveness of China′s rare earth industry with a case study on the emerging rare earth industry cluster in Baotou. The paper first reviews the cluster theory and explains why it matters to industrial competitiveness briefly, and then proposes a general framework for implementing cluster policies and strategies in practice. Following that, a case to study the emerging rare earth industry cluster in Baotou was presented and a cluster initiative based on the general framework was developed. The objectives of the cluster initiative and the role of government on initiative organizing and cluster upgrading were discussed in detail. In the end, general implications drawn from the case of Baotou were summarized, which try to provide some insights for applying cluster-based strategies to the rare earth industry of China.

Language Learning Strategies in a Network-based Environment

With the swift development of network technology, research on how to integrate network technology into language learning has become a trend. This paper examines whether the application of language learning strategy(LLS) in the networkbased environment has incomparable superiority. Beginning with the literature review, it presents an analysis on similarities and differences between network-based language learning strategy(NBLLS) and non-NBLLS, and then expounds the characteristics,the influencing factors and teachers' role of NBLLS. Taking 25 participants in the group of non-NBLL and 34 in the NBLL group as the comparative survey study, the empirical result shows the new evidence that there is a little difference between the two groups in the use of LLS. The findings of this study have implications for the application of NBLLS.

Planning Strategies of Scenic-based Beautiful Countryside: A Case Study of Panxi Village, Wanli District, Nanchang

A distributed routing algorithm based-on simplified topology in LEO satellite networks

In this paper, a distributed muting strategy based on simplified topology （DRBST） was proposed for LEO satellite networks. The topology of LEO satellite networks was simplified aiming at minimizing intersatellite links handover number. To optimize the route based on the simplified topology, we considered not only the transmission delay but also the queuing delay and the processing delay, which were analyzed using Markov chain and determined using a novel methodology. The DRBST algorithm was simulated in a LEO satellite networks model built using OPNET. The simulation results demonstrate that the low complexity DRBST algorithm can guarantee end-to-end delay bound. Moreover, the muting protocol cost is much less than traditional algorithms.
