Although solar exposure is necessary for human health,phototoxicology induced by excessive UVB and UVA radiation,which involves sunburns,skin aging and even tu-morigenesis,has been widely researched.Sunscreen is one of the most important ways to protect skin from UV phototoxic damage.As well as inorganic and organic UV filters,some natural products or plant extracts with aromatic rings in their structures,such as flavonoids or polyphenols,can absorb UV to reduce sunburn,acting as a natu-ral UV filter;they also show antioxidant or/and anti-inflammatory activity.This could explain why,although there are no officially approval natural commercial sun-filters,more and more commercial sunscreen products containing plant extracts are avail-able on the market.Here we summarize articles focusing on natural UV filters from plant published in the last 6 years,selecting the most significant data in order to better understand the photoprotective activity of natural products and extracts from plants,including their major constituents and main biological effects,methods for evaluating UV radiation resistance,anti-UV radiation experimental models and anti-UV radiation mechanisms. 展开更多

Background: Over the last few years sunscreen products have been suspected to be harmful to corals, especially because of their putative negative impact on symbiotic microalgae housed by these cnidarians. Previous publications reported that minerals or chemical UV filters could induce the release of microalgae from corals inducing their bleaching. The study of the ecotoxicity of finished cosmetic products containing these filters is important. Objectives: We sought to assess ex vivo the toxicity of five emulsions containing UV-filters on coral cuttings of Seriatopora hystrix. Materials and Methods: Coral cuttings were put in contact with 5 different emulsions containing UV-filters. The toxicity readout was the ability to induce polyp retraction and/or fragment bleaching of the coral cuttings of Seriatopora hystrix. Results: In our experimental conditions, none of the five tested formulas neither induced any significant polyp retraction nor triggered fragment bleaching of the coral. Conclusions: The five tested emulsions containing UV-filters did not modify coral cuttings. In vivo, larger tests are necessary to verify the results of this ex vivo pilot study. 展开更多

Background: Cosmetic formulations, and particularly solar products which contain mineral and chemical UV-filters, are often suspected of causing harmful effects on marine fauna and flora. After the publication of our work in 2019 concerning the ecotoxicological effects of such formulations on corals (Seriatopora hystrix), we here provide some new information about the biodegradability and the ecotoxicological effects of these products on marine zoo- and phytoplankton. Therefore, we choose to realize in silico and in vitro studies of the biodegradability of several solar products but also to evaluate the ecotoxicological effects of these products on one phytoplankton, i.e. Phaeodactylum tricornutum, and one zooplankton, i.e. Acartia tonsa, of a great importance for sea species survival (notably as sources of food). Materials and methods: Two different approaches were used to study the biodegradability of the tested products: One in silico method and an in vitro one. 2 solar products were involved in the in silico study which consisted in the determination of the degradation factor (DF) of each ingredient of the tested formulas in order to finally obtain their estimated biodegradability percentage. Already available data concerning each ingredient coupled to a computer model developed with one of our partners were used to achieve this study. The in vitro study involved 8 formulas containing UV-filters and was led by following the OECD 301 F guidelines. Ecotoxicological studies of 7 of the formulas containing UV-filters were for their part realized by following the ISO 10253 guidelines for the experiments led with Phaeodactylum tricornutum, and the ISO 14669 guidelines for the experiments led with Acartia tonsa. In these studies, the effect of each tested product on crustaceans’ mortality and algal growth inhibition was assessed. Results: The in silico study predicted that formulas containing chemical UV-filters display a high biodegradability (superior to the threshold value of 60% given by the OECD 301 F guidelines). In the in vitro part of our work, the 8 tested formulas showed a biodegradability slightly inferior to the one predicted in the in silico experiments. Therefore, in order to evaluate if these calculated biodegradability value could have significant harmful effects on zoo- or phytoplankton, we studied the effect of our products regarding the growth inhibition on Phaeodactylum tricornutum and the mortality on Acartia tonsa. In this last part of the study, all the tested products were classified as “non ecotoxic” following an internal classification based on Part 4 entitled “Environmental Hazards” of Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS), 9<sup>th</sup> edition (2021). Conclusions: These results are notably in line with those published by our teams in 2019 on the effects of solar cosmetic products on corals and seem to confirm that formulas containing mineral and chemical UV-filters can be daily used without displaying significant noxious effects on marine fauna and flora. . 展开更多

Benzophenones (BPs) are a class of widely used UV filters, which have been frequently detected within multiple environmental matrices. Disinfection is a necessary process in water treatment processes. The transformation behaviors and toxicity changes of 14 BP-type UV filters during chlorination disinfection treatment were investigated in this study. A new index, the acute toxicity formation potential, was proposed to evaluate the toxicity changes and potential risks of BP-type UV filters during chlorination treatment. It was found that 13 of 14 BP-type UV filters exhibited toxicity decreases in the chlorination disinfection process, more or less, while one showed a toxicity increase. The toxicity changes were dependent on substitution effects, such that 2,4-di-hydroxylated or 3-hydroxylated BPs exhibited significant toxicity decreases after chlorination treatment due to the ready cleavage of the aromatic ring. Importantly, the acute toxicity changes could be duplicated in an ambient water matrix. 展开更多

A simple method based on hollow fiber liquid-phase microextraction (HF-LPME) followed by high performance liquid chro-matography (HPLC) analysis was successfully developed for the determination of UV filters in cosmetic products. A canular extractor was assembled by mounting a hollow fiber inside an external tube with a tee-connector. The organic solvent was immobilized into the fiber to form a liquid membrane as the acceptor phase. The sample was continuously injected into the extractor and the UV filters were extracted from the aqueous sample into organic acceptor phase. The main parameters affecting HF-LPME including extraction solvent, sample volume, sample flow rate, pH values and ionic strength were investigated. Toluene has been verified to be suitable as the acceptor phase. Under the optimized HF-LPME conditions, the enrichment factors of five UV filters varying from 24 to 57 were achieved. The limits of detection for the five UV filters were in the range of 1-100 μg L-1 .The relative standard deviations (RSDs) of HF-LPME and HPLC analysis were lower than 5.2%. The proposed method has been successfully applied to the analysis of the varied cosmetic products. 展开更多

A reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatographic method with diode-array detector was established to simultaneously determine the six UV-filters, isopentyl-4-methoxycinnamate, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, ethylhexyl salicylate, homosalate, butyloctyl salicylate and ethylhexyl triazone. They were separated on a Kromasil C18 column, with gradient elution by methanol and water, and detected by HPLC-DAD.All results demonstrated good linear relationship in proper mass concentration range. The limits of quantitation(LOQ) were between 0.5 and 1.25 mg/L. The recoveries of the six compounds ranged from 98.3% to 101.0% at two inrements with the relative standard deviation(RSD) no more than 1.5%. 展开更多

臭氧微纳米气泡具有高臭氧利用率和高臭氧传质速率的优势,采用臭氧微纳米气泡氧化降解紫外线过滤剂二乙氨基羟基苯甲酰基苯甲酸己酯(DHHB),通过改变不同溶气方式和液相臭氧浓度,考察了臭氧微纳米气泡的性能及对DHHB的降解机制,同时探讨... 臭氧微纳米气泡具有高臭氧利用率和高臭氧传质速率的优势,采用臭氧微纳米气泡氧化降解紫外线过滤剂二乙氨基羟基苯甲酰基苯甲酸己酯(DHHB),通过改变不同溶气方式和液相臭氧浓度,考察了臭氧微纳米气泡的性能及对DHHB的降解机制,同时探讨了不同温度、pH、天然有机质和不同离子强度等因素对降解效果的影响。结果表明:臭氧微纳米气泡比臭氧传统气泡对污染物氧化性能有明显提升,体系内液相臭氧、羟基自由基浓度、羟基自由基产率与臭氧利用率显著增加,在室温(25℃)、气相臭氧浓度为10.22 mg/L、pH为11时,对DHHB的去除率在60 min内可达87.3%,去除率是臭氧传统气泡的2.02倍。天然有机质和碳酸氢根离子对DHHB降解过程有不同程度的抑制作用。通过淬灭试验分析,65.2%的DHHB降解由羟基自由基贡献,14.9%由超氧自由基贡献。研究证实了利用臭氧微纳米气泡体系处理水中DHHB的可行性,为该体系的实际应用提供了理论参考。 展开更多

针对饮用水中二甲基异莰醇(2-MIB)污染和UV/H2O2高级氧化工艺H2O2残留问题,构建了UV/H2O2/Cl2组合工艺,并以加标滤后水为原水开展了相关中试研究。基于响应曲面法对UV/H2O2工艺去除2-MIB进行参数优化,在此基础上对出水残留H2O2采用加氯... 针对饮用水中二甲基异莰醇(2-MIB)污染和UV/H2O2高级氧化工艺H2O2残留问题,构建了UV/H2O2/Cl2组合工艺,并以加标滤后水为原水开展了相关中试研究。基于响应曲面法对UV/H2O2工艺去除2-MIB进行参数优化,在此基础上对出水残留H2O2采用加氯中和处理,调整NaClO投加量以保证出水符合出厂水余氯要求。最终确定UV/H2O2/Cl2组合工艺运行的最优工况为:当2-MIB为275ng/L时,UV为350mJ/cm^2,H2O2投加量6mg/L,NaClO投加量7.5mg/L,在确定的最优工况下连续稳定运行组合工艺,对工艺出水进行检测,结果表明UV/H2O2/Cl2组合工艺对2-MIB去除率达到96.95%,出水余氯值0.4~0.5 mg/L,对TOC、UV254去除率分别达到15.59%、65.71%,能够氧化去除水中大分子有机物,对色氨酸等5种溶解性有机物去除效果良好,且不会带来消毒副产物超标和生物毒性问题,最终出水符合《生活饮用水卫生标准》(GB 5749-2006)对水质的要求。 展开更多

By dynamic method under UV irradiation, commercial melt-blown polypropylene (PPMB) filter element was modified with acrylamide (AAm) using benzophenone (BP) as initiator. Attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope verified that polyacrylamide chain was grafted on the fiber surface of PPMB filter element. Elemental content analysis with energy dispersive X-ray of fibers revealed that the polymerization content in the inner part of filter element was relatively higher than that in the outer. Degree of grafting changed with initiator concentration, monomer concentration, reaction temperature and reached 2.6% at the reaction condition: CBp=0.06 mol/L, CAAm=2.0 mol/L, irradiation time: 80 min, temperature: 60℃. Relative water flux altered with the hydrophilicity and pore size of filter element. In the antifouling test, the modified filter gave greater flux recovery (approximately 70%) after filtration of the water extract of Liuweidihuang, suggesting that the fouling layer was more easily reversible due to the hydrophilic nature of the modified filter. 展开更多
