Tsinghua University Library recently launched Tsinghua Wireless and Mobile Digital Library System(TWIMS) to meet users’ need for wireless access to library services.A survey of user experience about TWIMS was carried out for the purpose of studying its users’ behavior and their level of satisfaction about the system design and its various performance indicators. Based on our research findings, we concluded our research paper with a set of evaluative comments and suggestions. Those remarks are aimed at furthering the TWIMS’ functionality and reconstructing a more sensible questionnaire survey appertaining to the system users’ experience as well in the next phase of our extended research. 展开更多

Computing the User Experience via Big Data Analysis:A Case of Uber Services

As of 2020,the issue of user satisfaction has generated a significant amount of interest.Therefore,we employ a big data approach for exploring user satisfaction among Uber users.We develop a research model of user satisfaction by expanding the list of user experience(UX)elements(i.e.,pragmatic,expectation confirmation,hedonic,and burden)by including more elements,namely:risk,cost,promotion,anxiety,sadness,and anger.Subsequently,we collect 125,768 comments from online reviews of Uber services and perform a sentiment analysis to extract the UX elements.The results of a regression analysis reveal the following:hedonic,promotion,and pragmatic significantly and positively affect user satisfaction,while burden,cost,and risk have a substantial negative influence.However,the influence of expectation confirmation on user satisfaction is not supported.Moreover,sadness,anxiety,and anger are positively related to the perceived risk of users.Compared with sadness and anxiety,anger has a more important role in increasing the perceived burden of users.Based on these findings,we also provide some theoretical implications for future UX literature and some core suggestions related to establishing strategies for Uber and similar services.The proposed big data approach may be utilized in other UX studies in the future. 展开更多

The Learning management system(LMS)is now being used for uploading educational content in both distance and blended setups.LMS platform has two types of users:the educators who upload the content,and the students who have to access the content.The students,usually rely on text notes or books and video tutorials while their exams are conducted with formal methods.Formal assessments and examination criteria are ineffective with restricted learning space which makes the student tend only to read the educational contents and videos instead of interactive mode.The aim is to design an interactive LMS and examination video-based interface to cater the issues of educators and students.It is designed according to Human-computer interaction(HCI)principles to make the interactive User interface(UI)through User experience(UX).The interactive lectures in the form of annotated videos increase user engagement and improve the self-study context of users involved in LMS.The interface design defines how the design will interact with users and how the interface exchanges information.The findings show that interactive videos for LMS allow the users to have a more personalized learning experience by engaging in the educational content.The result shows a highly personalized learning experience due to the interactive video and quiz within the video. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Fractional flow reserve(FFR)measurement is commonly used in the cardiac catheterization laboratory to assess the functional significance of coronary arterial plaques.Robust real-world data on complications and modes of failure of FFR guidewires are limited.AIM To characterize these outcomes by analyzing the post-marketing surveillance data from the United States Food and Drug Administration Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience(MAUDE)database for commonly used FFR guidewires.METHODS The MAUDE database was queried from January 2010 through April 2020 for 3 FFR guidewires[PressureWireTM X(Abbott),CometTM(Boston Scientific),and VerrataTM(Philips)]by searching for the following events:“Injury”,“malfunction”,“death”,and“other”.This yielded 544 reports.After excluding incomplete reports,486 reports were analyzed.RESULTS Guidewire tip fracture was the most commonly reported mode of failure,in 174(35.8%)cases followed by guidewire kinking(n=152,31.3%),communication failure(n=141,29.0%),and shaft fracture(n=67,13.8%).In total,133(27.4%)device failures resulted in patient adverse events.The most common adverse event was retained guidewire tip,in 71(53.4%)cases,followed by freshly deployed stent dislodgment(n=26,19.6%)and coronary artery dissection(n=23,17.3%).Seven deaths were reported.CONCLUSION FFR guidewire failures can occur because of various mechanisms and cause patient adverse events.The MAUDE database serves as an important platform for improved collaboration among clinicians,device manufacturers,and regulators to improve device performance and optimize patient outcomes.Our analysis provides mechanistic insights of FFR guidewire failure and associated adverse events but cannot verify causality or provide a comparison among different guidewires. 展开更多

Background With an increasing number of vehicles becoming autonomous,intelligent,and connected,paying attention to the future usage of car human-machine interface with these vehicles should become more relevant.Several studies have addressed car HMI but were less attentive to designing and implementing interactive glazing for every day(autonomous)driving contexts.Methods Reflecting on the literature,we describe an engineering psychology practice and the design of six novel future user scenarios,which envision the application of a specific set of augmented reality(AR)support user interactions.Additionally,we conduct evaluations on specific scenarios and experiential prototypes,which reveal that these AR scenarios aid the target user groups in experiencing a new type of interaction.The overall evaluation is positive with valuable assessment results and suggestions.Conclusions This study can interest applied psychology educators who aspire to teach how AR can be operationalized in a human-centered design process to students with minimal pre-existing expertise or minimal scientific knowledge in engineering psychology. 展开更多

In this paper, we propose a novel image recompression frame- work and image quality assessment (IQA) method to efficiently recompress Internet images. With this framework image size is significantly reduced without affecting spatial resolution or perceptible quality of the image. With the help of IQA, the relationship between image quality and image evaluation scores can be quickly established, and the optimal quality factor can be obtained quickly and accurately within a pre - determined perceptual quality range. This process ensures the image's perceptual quality, which is applied to each input image. The test results show that, using the proposed method, the file size of images can be reduced by about 45%-60% without affecting their visual quality. Moreover, our new image -reeompression framework can be used in to many different application scenarios. 展开更多

Owing to constant changes in user needs,new technologies have been introduced to keep pace by building sustainable applications.Researchers and practitioners are keen to understand the factors that create an attractive user interface.Although the use of cross-platform applications and services is increasing,limited research has examined and evaluated cross-platforms for developing mobile applications for different operating systems.This study evaluates crossplatform features,identifying the main factors that help to create an attractive user adaptation when building sustainable applications for both Android and iOS.Flutter and React Native were selected so end-users could test their features using the cross-platform usability assessment model.Usability,satisfaction,and navigation were tested to measure the cross-platform adaptation and end-user experience.The data were analyzed using hybrid structural equation modeling(SEM)and artificial neural network(ANN)approaches.The study results show that usability and navigation both have a positive effect on adaptation on Flutter and React Native,while satisfaction only has an effect on Flutter.The navigation variable was also the most significant predictor of adaptation for both models.This study has several implications and makes contributions to the research field,to developers,and to end-users. 展开更多

To reduce network access latency, network traffic volume and server load, caching capacity has been proposed as a component of evolved Node B(e Node B) in the ratio access network(RAN). These e Node B caches reduce transport energy consumption but lead to additional energy cost by equipping every e Node B with caching capacity. Existing researches focus on how to minimize total energy consumption, but often ignore the trade-off between energy efficiency and end user quality of experience, which may lead to undesired network performance degradation. In this paper, for the first time, we build an energy model to formulate the problem of minimizing total energy consumption at e Node B caches by taking a trade-off between energy efficiency and end user quality of experience. Through coordinating all the e Node B caches in the same RAN, the proposed model can take a good balance between caching energy and transport energy consumption while also guarantee end user quality of experience. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model. Compared with the existing works, our proposal significantly reduces the energy consumption by approximately 17% while keeps superior end user quality of experience performance. 展开更多

Objective:Harmonic Focus(Ethicon,Johnson and Johnson,Cincinnati,OH,USA),LigaSure Small Jaw(Medtronic,Covidien Products,Minneapolis,MN,USA),and Thunderbeat Open Fine Jaw(Olympus,Japan)are electrosurgical instruments used widely in head and neck surgery.The study aims to compare device malfunctions,adverse events to patients,operative injuries,and interventions related to Harmonic,LigaSure,and Thunderbeat use during thyroidectomy.Methods:The US Food and Drug Administration's Manufacture and User Facility Device Experience(MAUDE)database was queried for adverse events associated with Harmonic,LigaSure,and Thunderbeat from January 2005 to August 2020.Data were extracted from reports pertaining to thyroidectomy.Results:Of the 620 adverse events extracted,394(63.5%)involved Harmonic,134(21.6%)LigaSure,and 92(14.8%)Thunderbeat.The reported device malfunctions most frequently associated with Harmonic was damage to the blade(110(27.9%)),LigaSure was inappropriate function(47(43.1%)),Thunderbeat was damage to the tissue or Teflon pad(27(30.7%)),respectively.Burn injury and incomplete hemostasis were the most commonly reported adverse events.The operative injury reported most frequently when using Harmonic and LigaSure was burn injury.No operator injuries were reported with Thunderbeat use.Conclusion:The most frequently reported device malfunctions were damage to the blade,inappropriate function,and damage to the tissue or Teflon pad.The most frequently reported adverse events to patients was a burn injury and incomplete hemostasis.Interventions aimed at improving physician education may help reduce adverse events attributed to improper use. 展开更多

In recent years, cloud sync(hronization) services such as GoogleDrive and Dropbox have provided Internet users with convenient and reliable data storing/sharing functionality. The cloud synchronization mechanism (in particular, how to deliver the user-side data updates to the cloud) plays a critical role in cloud sync services because it greatly affects the cloud operation cost (in terms of sync traffic) and user experience (in terms of sync delay). By comprehensively measuring tens of popular cloud sync services, we find that their cloud sync mechanisms differ greatly in sync performance and design granularity. Quite surprisingly, some very popular services (like GoogleDrive and 115 SyncDisk) utilize a quite coarse-grained cloud sync mechanism that may lead to severe traffic overuse. For example, updating 1-MB data may sometimes result in 260-MB sync traffic. In this paper, we conduct a comparative study of various cloud sync mechanisms by analyzing their respective pros and cons under different situations, unravel the pathological processes for their traffic overuse problems, and finally provide insights/solutions for better choosing/designing a cloud sync service. 展开更多

In the face of the dilemma between the growth of download requests and the limitation of storage resource, the cloud servers have to design an efficient resource allocation scheme to enhance the utilization of storage as well as to satisfy users' needs like a short download time. When a user's churn behavior is considered as a Markov chain process, it is found that a proper allocation of download speed can optimize the storage resource utilization. Accordingly, two dynamic resource allocation schemes including a speed switching (SS) scheme and a speed increasing (SI) scheme are proposed. Both theoretical analysis and simulation results prove that our schemes can effectively reduce the consumption of storage resource and keep the download time short enough for a good user experience. 展开更多

Efficient complementary caching for ISP-aware networks

Internet service providers (ISPs) have taken some measures to reduce intolerable inter-lSP peer-to-peer (P2P) traffic costs, therefore user experiences of various P2P applications have been affected. The recently emerging offiine downloading service seeks to improve user experience by using dedicate servers to cache requested files and provide high-speed uploading. However, with rapid increase in user population, the server-side bandwidth resource of offline downloading system is expected to be insufficient in the near future. We propose a novel complementary caching scheme with the goal of mitigating inter-ISP traffic, alleviating the load on servers of Internet applications and enhancing user experience. Both architecture and caching algorithm are presented in this paper. On the one hand, with full knowledge of P2P file sharing system and offiine downloading service, the infrastructure of complementary caching is designed to conveniently be deployed and work together with existing platforms. The co-operational mechanisms among different major components are also included. On the other hand, with in-depth understanding of traffic characteristics that are relevant to caching, we develop complementary caching algorithm with respect to the density of requests, the redundancy of file and file size. Since such relevant information can be real-time captured in our design, the proposed policy can be implemented to guide the storage and replacement of caching unities, Based on real-world traces over 3 months, we demonstrate that the complementary caching scheme is capable to achieve the 'three-win' objective. As the development of new visualization systems,within the field of simulation,offers their users more insights from their simulations,immersive systems are becoming a part of the visualization techniques.With the recent advancements of the Head-Mounted Displays(HMDs)and popularity of motion sensors,human beings and computer become more interactive.This study aims to evaluate the potential of such systems as a visualization tool through the development of a new flexible framework for visualization within virtual reality(VR)environment,using an Oculus Rift and a Leap Motion.Two approaches are then compared:high-3D object rendering within the virtual scene approach and a user experience-oriented system with an intuitive interface.To assess the quality of the interface and its relevance for the user,different types of gestures are implemented and tested.From an experiment on users to evaluate the developed system as a proper visualization tool,the HMDs,paired with a motion sensor to make a gesture-controlled interface seem to be promising mediums despite various constraints on development regarding the technology limitations. 展开更多
