Neurological disorders are amongst the most widely studied human aliments.Yet,they are also one of the most poorly understood.Although most of these disorders are polygenic,genotype still plays an important role in their etiologies.For example,in schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders,there is a 40-60%concordance rate in monozygotic twins,with 60-90%heritability(Burmeister et al.,2008).However,the mechanisms by which multiple genes and their genomic variations influence the phenotypes of the disorders remain to be understood. The complexities of the disorders are tur- ther compounded by the individual rarity of the genomic variations and their variable penetrance (Cook and Scherer, 2008). Thus, conventional disease modeling, such as gene knockout in cells or in animals, to attain the desired disease genotype may not be the most suitable platform for tackling most neurological disorders. 展开更多

After primary analyses on the serum glycocon-jugates of lung cancer and normal individul using the enzyme-linked lectin assay (ELLA) with 12 kinds of lectins, PHA and LCA were selected to further study in the sera of 8 kinds of cancers, 4 kinds of non-malignant disease and 1 kind of postoperative cancer. It was found that the test values of 7 kinds of cancers with PHA or LCA were significantly higher than that of the normal (P<0.01); the values of 4 kinds of non-malignant diseases with PHA were not higher (P>0.05); the values of the postoperative cancer with PHA were obviously lower than that of the preoperative (P<0.05). The results showed that the serum glycoconjugates which can bind to PHA seemed related to the cancerous existence in human bodies. The significance of the findings was discussed. 展开更多

Detecting Climate Change in Using Extreme Data from Two Surface Weather Stations: Case Study Valle of Comitan and La Esperanza, Chiapas, Mexico

The study area is located between the cities of Comitan (16&deg;10'43"N and 92&deg;04'20''W) a city with 150,000 inhabitants and La Esperanza (16&deg;9'15''N and 91&deg;52'5''W) a town with 3000 inhabitants. Both weather stations are 30 km from each other in the Chiapas State, México. 54 years of daily records of the series of maximum (<em>t</em><sub>max</sub>) and minimum temperatures (<em>t</em><sub>min</sub>) of the weather station 07205 Comitan that is on top of a house and 30 years of daily records of the weather station 07374 La Esperanza were analyzed. The objective is to analyze the evidence of climate change in the Comitan valley. 2.07% and 19.04% of missing data were filled, respectively, with the WS method. In order to verify homogeneity three methods were used: Standard Normal Homogeneity Test (SNHT), the Von Neumann method and the Buishand method. The heterogeneous series were homogenized using climatol. The trends of <em>t</em><sub>max</sub> and <em>t</em><sub>min</sub> for both weather stations were analyzed by simple linear regression, Sperman’s rho and Mann-Kendall tests. The Mann-Kendal test method confirmed the warming trend at the Comitan station for both variables with <em>Z<sub>MK</sub></em> statistic values equal to 1.57 (statistically not significant) and 4.64 (statistically significant). However, for the Esperanza station, it determined a cooling trend for tmin and a slight non-significant warming for <em>t</em><sub>max</sub> with a <em>Z</em><sub><em>MK</em></sub> statistic of -2.27 (statistically significant) and 1.16 (statistically not significant), for a significance level <em>α</em> = 0.05. 展开更多

Progress in developing robust therapies for spinal cord injury (SCI), trau- matic brain injury (TBI) and peripheral nerve injury has been slow. A great deal has been learned over the past 30 years regarding both the intrinsic factors and the environmental factors that regulate axon growth, but this large body of information has not yet resulted in clinically available thera- peutics. This therapeutic bottleneck has many root causes, but a consensus is emerging that one contributing factor is a lack of standards for experi- mental design and reporting. The absence of reporting standards, and even of commonly accepted definitions of key words, also make data mining and bioinformatics analysis of neural plasticity and regeneration difficult, if not impossible. This short review will consider relevant background and poten- tial solutions to this problem in the axon regeneration domain. 展开更多

Scanning tunnel microscopy (STM) is performed to verify if an Rh 'nails' structure is formed accompanying the graphene growing during chemical vapor deposition. A structure of a graphene island in an Rh vacancy island is used as the start. While the graphene island is removed by oxygenation, the variations of the Rh vacancy island are imaged with an in-situ high-temperature STM. By fitting with our model and calculations, we conclude that the best fit is obtained for 0% Rh, i.e., for the complete absence of nails below graphene on Rh(111). That is, when graphene is formed on Rh(111), the substrate remains fiat and does not develop a SUPPorting nail structure. 展开更多

A transonic cascade wind tunnel test facility has been built for this purpose in the Department of Aeronautics, University of Tokyo. The system and operation of this facility will be explained in detail. The tunnel is of blowdown type, and can be run repeatedly at a short interval. Beneficiation study on samples of baryte ore from Azare in the Plateau State of Nigeria was carried out using chemical analysis, atomic absorption spectrophotometric analysis, jigging and magnetic separation. Results show that Azare baryte can profitably be concentrated for use in oil drilling and other industrial purposes. Barium sulphate content in the head ore analyzed, is 98%. Comparison between jigging and magnetic separation shows that jigging produces a more satisfactory result. 展开更多

This paper selects some representative regions to obtain their G-R relation curves according to their seismicity characteristics,by using ML≥2.0 microseismicity data(1970~1993)in North China.The annual occurrence rate of events of each magnitude can be inferred from the G-R relation.At the same tune,the actual annual occurrence rate of earthquakes of higher magnitudes can be calculated from historical earthquakes(1300-1993)recorded in the same region.It seems that both results are almost the same.Therefore,the rate of events of higher magnitudes can be obtained by using microseismicity data when the proper region is selected.However,two points should be noticed:(1)The method can only give the annual occurrence rate in a seismicity system and estimate the whole situation of the system.(2)When there is a very large earthquake in and near the period in which the microseismicity data are applied,the actual occurrence rate of the system,including this larger earthquake,cannot be obtained by this method. 展开更多

To measure breast basic dimension by using computer-aided projection fringe system.Methods A system has been developed for measuring breast basic dimension based on computer-aided projection fringe measurement and programming software.Plastic manikins breast’s SN-N (sternal notch to nipple distance),N-ML (nipple to midline distance),N-N (internipple distance),MBW (base width of breast) and N-IMF (nipple to inframammary fold distance) are measured with this system.At the same time,these items are also measured with routine ruler.Results This study indicate that the system has some merits:① non-touching measurement;② it is very rapid,the patient measured need hold his breath only 0.5 second,and all the time it takes is about 2.5 minutes;③ the measurement’s sensitivity is as high as to 0.6 mm,which meets the clinic requirement entirely;④ the measurement’s accuracy of the system is not significantly when comparing to the routine ruler’s.Conclusion Computer-adided projection fringe system for measuring breast basic dimension is feasible and advanced.14 refs,1 fig. 展开更多
