Vapor deposited coatings onto strip steel are a promising alternative as functional layers for corrosion protection or high abrasion resistance.Conventional coating systems have some limits regarding environmental compatibility, the range of coating materials and application properties. Physical vapor deposition(PVD) is an environment-friendly technology and enables nearly unlimited material and process variety.Electron beam high-rate evaporation with deposition rates up to some micrometers per second is the most productive PVD technology for low cost coating. The combination of evaporation with powerful plasma is an efficient way to improve the layer properties. The developed plasma sources can be used for special plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition(PECVD) processes too. The paper gives an overview about the latest developments in these technologies.Furthermore, the paper explains some examples of new layer stacks onto steel strips. While enhanced corrosion protection can be obtained by magnesium, aluminium or copper containing coatings other functional surface properties come more and more in the focus of interest. For instance, decorative gold colored layers, transparent scratch resistant layers, hard coatings and photo catalytic layers were deposited on running steel strips.Functional layers and layer systems for energy saving and sun energy absorption by solar thermal effects and photo voltaics are under development. The coatings are prepared under the conditions of very high deposition rates using our in-line vacuum coater for metallic strips and sheets with the name MAXI.The influence of the process and plasma parameters on the layer properties were investigated and will be demonstrated for some applications. 展开更多

Zn-Mg alloy coatings were obtained by physical vapor deposition (PVD) on electroplated steel sheets. Study on the formation of intermetallic phases in the coatings was conducted through the use of X-ray diffraction (XRD) ,scanning electron microscope (SEM) and glow discharge optical emission spectrometry (GDOES). It is found that MgZn2 is the main Zn-Mg alloy phase formed after heat treatment. The formation of Mg-Zn intermetallic phases is controlled not only by thermodynamics, but also by kinetics. MgZn2 has different morphologies, such as laminar structure, porous structure and floc-like structure, which are mainly determined by the annealing temperature. Obvious diffusion of Mg starts at 350 ℃, and the diffusion of iron increases significantly when the temperature is elevated to 380℃. 展开更多

FeCoCrNiAl high entropy alloy coatings were prepared by supersonic air-plasma spraying. The coatings were post-treated by vacuum heat treatment at 600 and 900°C,and laser re-melting with 300 W,respectively,to study the influence of different treatments on the structure and properties of the coatings. The phase constitution, microstructure and microhardness of the coatings after treatments were investigated using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry. Results showed that the as-sprayed coatings consisted of pure metal and Fe-Cr.The AlNi;phase was obtained after the vacuum heat treatment process.A body-centered cubic structure with less AlNi;could be found in the coating after the laser re-melting process. The average hardness values of the as-sprayed coating and the coatings with two different temperature vacuum heat treatments and with laser re-melting were 177,227,266 and 682 HV,respectively. This suggests that the vacuum heat treatment promoted the alloying process of the coatings, and contributed to the enhancement of the coating wear resistance. The laser re-melted coating showed the best wear resistance. 展开更多

The objective of this research was to develop a novel self-lubricating coating on an AA6061 aluminum alloy.Three coatings were prepared by the plasma electrolytic oxidation(PEO) process using 50-, 500-, and 1000-Hz pulsed direct current, respectively. The as-deposited coatings were then post-treated using two different methods, viz., ultrasonic vibration-aided vacuum oil impregnation(UVOI) and oil impregnation under ambient pressure(OIAP). After posttreatment, an oil-containing, self-lubricating top layer was formed on the coatings. The effects of the coatings' surface morphologies and structures on their oil-holding capabilities were discussed. The results revealed that coatings prepared with higher frequency had a greater oil-holding capacity using OIAP post-treatment, while those prepared with lower frequency had a greater oil-containing capability using UVOI post-treatment. These phenomena are related to the morphologies of the coatings produced with various current modes. The tribological properties of the coatings before and after post-treatments were investigated by pin-on-disc sliding wear tests. Due to the formation of a lubricant-containing top layer, the post-treatment coatings had a lower friction coefficient and improved wear resistance compared with the asdeposited coatings. In addition, the coatings after UVOI treatment had better wear performance than those post-treated using the OIAP process. Among all coatings, the coating produced with a 50-Hz pulsed current followed by UVOI posttreatment achieved the lowest friction coefficient(0.03) and best wear resistance when sliding against a Si3N4 ceramic counterface. This study indicates that a novel self-lubricating coating can be prepared by a PEO process combined with vacuum oil impregnation post-treatment. 展开更多

A new silica antireflective coating with improved hydrophobicity and optical stability in a vacuum is obtained by a two-step route. Firstly, silica sols are prepared with a sol-gel process, in which tetraethyl orthosilicate is utilized as a precursor. And by introduction of fluorine containing glycol into the sols, the porosity of silica particles and surface polarity of the coatings are decreased. Afterward, coatings are constructed with low surface roughness by modification of PMBA-PMMA. The coatings retain transmission of up to 99.6%, and laser damage threshold of about 50 J/cm^2 at a wavelenth of 532 nm (1-on-1. 10 ns) 展开更多
