When investigating the vortex-induced vibration(VIV)of marine risers, extrapolating the dynamic response on the entire length based on limited sensor measurements is a crucial step in both laboratory experiments and fatigue monitoring of real risers. The problem is conventionally solved using the modal decomposition method, based on the principle that the response can be approximated by a weighted sum of limited vibration modes. However, the method is not valid when the problem is underdetermined,i.e.,the number of unknown mode weights is more than the number of known measurements. This study proposed a sparse modal decomposition method based on the compressed sensing theory and the Compressive Sampling Matching Pursuit(Co Sa MP)algorithm, exploiting the sparsity of VIV in the modal space. In the validation study based on high-order VIV experiment data, the proposed method successfully reconstructed the response using only seven acceleration measurements when the conventional methods failed.A primary advantage of the proposed method is that it offers a completely data-driven approach for the underdetermined VIV reconstruction problem, which is more favorable than existing model-dependent solutions for many practical applications such as riser structural health monitoring. 展开更多

Functionally graded materials(FGMs)are a novel class of composite materials that have attracted significant attention in the field of engineering due to their unique mechanical properties. This study aims to explore the dynamic behaviors of an FGM stepped beam with different boundary conditions based on an efficient solving method.Under the assumptions of the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, the governing differential equations of an individual FGM beam are derived with Hamilton’s principle and decoupled via the separation-of-variable approach. Then, the free and forced vibrations of the FGM stepped beam are solved with the transfer matrix method(TMM).Two models,i.e.,a three-level FGM stepped beam and a five-level FGM stepped beam, are considered, and their natural frequencies and mode shapes are presented. To demonstrate the validity of the method in this paper, the simulation results by ABAQUS are also given. On this basis, the detailed parametric analyses on the frequencies and dynamic responses of the three-level FGM stepped beam are carried out.The results show the accuracy and efficiency of the TMM. 展开更多

As an important material for manufacturing resonant components of musical instruments,Paulownia has an important influence on the sound quality of Ruan.In this paper,a model for evaluating the sound quality of Ruan based on the vibration characteristics of wood is developed using machine learning methods.Generally, the selection of materials for Ruan manufacturing relies primarily on manually weighing, observing, striking, and listening by the instrument technician.Deficiencies in scientific theory have hindered the quality of the finished Ruan.In this study, nine Ruans were manufactured, and a prediction model of Ruan sound quality was proposed based on the raw material information of Ruans.Out of a total of 180 data sets,145 and 45 sets were chosen for training and validation,respec-tively.In this paper, typical correlation analysis was used to determine the correlation between two single indicators in two adjacent pairwise combinations of the measured objects in each stage of the production process in Ruan. The vibra-tion characteristics of the wood were tested, and a model for predicting the evaluation of Ruan’s acoustic qualities was developed by measuring the vibration characteristics of the resonating plate material. The acoustic quality of the Ruan sound board wood was evaluated and predicted using machine learning model generalized regression neural net-work.The results show that the prediction of Ruan sound quality can be achieved using Matlab simulation based on the vibration characteristics of the soundboard wood. When the model-predicted values were compared with the tradi-tional predicted results,it was found that the generalized regression neural network had good performance, achieving an accuracy of 93.8%which was highly consistent with the experimental results. It was concluded that the model can accurately predict the acoustic quality of the Ruan based on the vibration performance of the soundboards. 展开更多

This study presents the Chebyshev polynomials-based Ritz method to examine the thermal buckling and free vibration characteristics of metal foam beams. The analyses include three models for porosity distribution and two scenarios for thermal distribution. The material properties are assessed under two conditions,i.e.,temperature dependence and temperature independence. The theoretical framework for the beams is based on the higher-order shear deformation theory, which incorporates shear deformations with higher-order polynomials. The governing equations are established from the Lagrange equations, and the beam displacement fields are approximated by the Chebyshev polynomials.Numerical simulations are performed to evaluate the effects of thermal load, slenderness, boundary condition(BC),and porosity distribution on the buckling and vibration behaviors of metal foam beams. The findings highlight the significant influence of temperature-dependent(TD)material properties on metal foam beams'buckling and vibration responses. 展开更多

This work presents a novel approach to achieve nonlinear vibration response based on the Hamilton principle. We chose the 5-MW reference wind turbine which was established by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory(NREL),to research the effects of the nonlinear flap-wise vibration characteristics. The turbine wheel is simplified by treating the blade of a wind turbine as an Euler-Bernoulli beam, and the nonlinear flap-wise vibration characteristics of the wind turbine blades are discussed based on the simplification first. Then, the blade’s large-deflection flap-wise vibration governing equation is established by considering the nonlinear term involving the centrifugal force.Lastly,it is truncated by the Galerkin method and analyzed semi-analytically using the multi-scale analysis method, and numerical simulations are carried out to compare the simulation results of finite elements with the numerical simulation results using Campbell diagram analysis of blade vibration. The results indicated that the rotational speed of the impeller has a significant impact on blade vibration. When the wheel speed of 12.1 rpm and excitation amplitude of 1.23 the maximum displacement amplitude of the blade has increased from 0.72 to 3.16.From the amplitude-frequency curve,it can be seen that the multi-peak characteristic of blade amplitude frequency is under centrifugal nonlinearity.Closed phase trajectories in blade nonlinear vibration, exhibiting periodic motion characteristics, are found through phase diagrams and Poincare section diagrams. 展开更多

Viscoelastic foundation plays a very important role in civil engineering. It can effectively disperse the structural load into the foundation soil and avoid the damage caused by the concentrated load. The model of Euler-Bernoulli beam on viscoelastic Pasternak foundation can be used to analyze the deformation and response of buildings under complex geological conditions. In this paper, we use Hermite finite element method to get the numerical approximation scheme for the vibration equation of viscoelastic Pasternak foundation beam. Convergence and error estimation are rigourously established. We prove that the fully discrete scheme has convergence order O(τ2+h4), where τis time step size and his space step size. Finally, we give four numerical examples to verify the validity of theoretical analysis. 展开更多

This study presents a novel two-step approach to assess plate-like structural laminar damages, particularly for delamination damage detection of composite structures.Firstly,a 2-D continuous wavelet transform is employed to identify the damage location and sizes from vibration curvature data.An inverse method is subsequently then used to determine the bending stiffness reduction ratio along a specified direction, enabling the quantification of the delamination severity. The method employed in this study is an extension of the one-dimensional inverse method developed in a previous work of the authors. The applicability of the two-step inverse approach is demonstrated in a simulation analysis and by an experimental study on a cantilever composite plate containing a single delamination. The inverse method is shown to have the capacity to reveal the detailed damage information of delamination within a constrained searching space and can be used to determine the effective flexural stiffness of composite plate structures, even in cases of complex delamination damage. 展开更多

The component synthesis active vibration suppression method (CSVS) can be applied to suppress the vibration of flexible systems. By this method, several same or similar time-varying components are arranged according to certain rules along the time axis. The synthesized command can suppress the arbitrary unwanted vibration harmonic while achieving the desired rigid body motion. The number of the components increases rapidly when the number of harmonic vibration is growing. In this article, the CSVS based on zero-placement technique is used to construct the synthesized command to suppress the multi-harmonics simultaneously in the discrete domain. The nature of zero-placement method is to put enough zeros to cancel system poles at necessary points. The designed synthesized command has equal time intervals between each component and which is much easier to be implemented. Using this method, the number of components increases linearly with the increasing of the number of being suppressed harmonics. For the spacecraft with flexible appendages, CSVS based on zero-placement is used to design the time optimal large angle maneuver control strategy. Simulations have verified the validity and superiority of the proposed approach. 展开更多

The potential energy curves of the ground state X2∑+g of the fluorine molecule have been accurately reconstructed employing the Ryderg-Klein-Rees (RKR) method extrapolated by a Hulburt and Hirschfeler potential function for longer internuclear distances. Solving the corresponding radial one-dimensional Schr?dinger equation of nuclear motion yields 22 bound vibrational levels above v=0. The comparison of these theoretical levels with the experimental data yields a mean absolute deviation of about 7.6 cm^-1 over the 23 levels. The highest vibrational level energy obtained using this method is 13308.16 cm?1 and the relative deviation compared with the experimental datum of 13408.49 cm^-1 is only 0.74%. The value from our method is much closer and more accurate than the value obtained by the quantum mechanical ab initio method by Bytautas. The reported agreement of the vibrational levels and dissociation energy with experiment is contingent upon the potential energy curve of the F2 ground state. 展开更多

This study is focused on the effect of vibration induced by moving trains in tunnels on the surrounding ground and structures.A three-dimensional finite element model is established for a one-track railway tunnel and an adjacent twelve-storey building frame by using commercial software Midas GTS-NX(2019)and Midas Gen.This study considered the moving load effect of a complete train, which varies with space as well as with time. The effect of factors such as train speed, overburden pressure on the tunnel and variation in soil properties are studied in the time domain. As a result, the variations in horizontal and vertical acceleration for two different sites,i.e.,the free ground surface(without structure)and the area containing the structure, are compared. Also, the displacement pattern of the raft foundation is plotted for different train velocities. At lower speeds, the heaving phenomenon is negligible, but as the speed increases, both the heaving and differential settlement increase in the foundation. This study demonstrates that the effect of moving train vibrations should be considered in the design of new nearby structures and proper ground improvement should be considered for existing structures. 展开更多

The separation of variables is employed to solve Hamiltonian dual form of eigenvalue problem for transverse free vibrations of thin plates, and formulation of the natural mode in closed form is performed. The closed-form natural mode satisfies the governing equation of the eigenvalue problem of thin plate exactly and is applicable for any types of boundary conditions. With all combinations of simplysupported (S) and clamped (C) boundary conditions applied to the natural mode, the mode shapes are obtained uniquely and two eigenvalue equations are derived with respect to two spatial coordinates, with the aid of which the normal modes and frequencies are solved exactly. It was believed that the exact eigensolutions for cases SSCC, SCCC and CCCC were unable to be obtained, however, they are successfully found in this paper. Comparisons between the present results and the FEM results validate the present exact solutions, which can thus be taken as the benchmark for verifying different approximate approaches. 展开更多

The characteristics of transverse free vibration of a tapered Timoshenko beam under an axially conservative compression resting on visco-Pasternak foundations are investigated by the interpolating matrix method. The research is executed in view of a three-parameter foundation which includes the eff ects of the Winkler coeffi cient, Pasternak coeffi cient and damping coeffi cient of the elastic medium. The governing equations of free vibration of a non-prismatic Timoshenko beam under an axially conservative force resting on visco-Pasternak foundations are transformed into ordinary diff erential equations with variable coeffi cients in light of the bending rotation angle and transverse displacement. All the natural frequencies orders together with the corresponding mode shapes of the beam are calculated at the same time, and a good convergence and accuracy of the proposed method is verifi ed through two numerical examples. The infl uences of foundation mechanical characteristics together with rotary inertia and shear deformation on natural frequencies of the beam with diff erent taper ratios are analyzed. A comprehensive parametric numerical study is carried out emphasizing the primary parameters that describe the dynamic property of the beam. 展开更多

The analysis of natural vibration characteristics has become one of important steps of the manufacture and dynamic design in the aerospace industry. This paper presents a new scenario called virtual cutting in the context of the transfer matrix method of linear multibody systems closed- loop topology for computing the free vibration characteristics of elastically coupled flexible launch vehicle boosters. In this approach, the coupled system is idealized as a triple-beam system-like structure coupled by linear translational springs, where a non-uniform free-free Euler-Bemoulli beam is used. A large thrust-to-weight ratio leads to large axial accelera- tions that result in an axial inertia load distribution from nose to tail. Consequently, it causes the development of significant compressive forces along the length of the launch vehicle. Therefore, it is important to take into account this effect in the transverse vibration model. This scenario does not need the global dynamics equations of a system, and it has high computational efficiency and low memory requirements. The validity of the presented scenario is achieved through com- parison to other approaches published in the literature. 展开更多

The vibroimpact systems with bilateral barriers are often encountered in practice. However, the dynamics of the vibroimpact system with bilateral barriers is full of challenges.Few closed-form solutions were obtained. In this paper,we propose a novel method for random vibration analysis of single-degree-of-freedom(SDOF)vibroim-pact systems with bilateral barriers under Gaussian white noise excitations.A periodic approximate transformation is employed to convert the equations of the motion to a con-tinuous form. The probabilistic description of the system is subsequently defined through the corresponding Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov(FPK)equation.The closed-form station-ary probability density function(PDF)of the response is obtained by solving the reduced FPK equation and using the proposed iterative method of weighted residue together with the concepts of the circulatory probability flow and the potential probability flow. Finally, the versatility of the proposed approach is demonstrated by its application to two typical examples.Note that the solution obtained by using the proposed method can be used as the benchmark to examine the accuracy of approximate solutions obtained by other methods. 展开更多

In this study, forced nonlinear vibration of a circular micro-plate under two-sided electrostatic, two-sided Casimir and external harmonic forces is investigated analytically. For this purpose, at first, von Karman plate theory including geometrical nonlinearity is used to obtain the deflection of the micro-plate. Galerkin decomposition method is then employed, and nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) of motion are determined. A harmonic balance method (HBM) is applied to equations and analytical relation for nonlineaT frequency response (F-R) curves are derived for two categories (including and neglecting Casimir force) separately. The analytical results for three cases:(1) semi-linear vibration;(2) weakly nonlinear vibration;(3) highly non linear vibration, are validated by comparing with the numerical solutio ns. After validation, the effects of the voltage and Casimir force on the natural frequency of two-sided capacitor system are investigated. It is shown that by assuming Casimir force in small gap distances, reduction of the natural frequency is considerable. The influences of the applied voltage, damping, micro-plate thickness and Casimir force on the frequency response curves have been presented too. The results of this study can be useful for modeling circular parallel-plates in nano /microelectromechanical transducers such as microphones and pressure sensors. 展开更多

Lagrangian-Eulerian formulations based on a generalized variational principle of fluid-solid coupling dynamics are established to describe flow-induced vibration of a structure under small deformation in an incompressible viscous fluid flow. The spatial discretization of the formulations is based on the multi-linear interpolating functions by using the finite element method for both the fluid and solid structures. The generalized trapezoidal rule is used to obtain apparently non-symmetric linear equations in an incremental form for the variables of the flow and vibration. The nonlinear convective term and time factors are contained in the non-symmetric coefficient matrix of the equations. The generalized minimum residual (GMRES) method is used to solve the incremental equations. A new stable algorithm of GMRES-Hughes-Newmark is developed to deal with the flow-induced vibration with dynamical fluid-structure interaction in complex geometries. Good agreement between the simulations and laboratory measurements of the pressure and blade vibration accelerations in a hydro turbine passage was obtained, indicating that the GiViRES-Hughes-Newmark algorithm presented in this paper is suitable for dealing with the flow-induced vibration of structures under small deformation. 展开更多
