Particular vocabularies used in Hong Kong and Taiwan have a considerable influence on Putonghua along with the wide distribution and circulation of books, newspapers and magazines, films and televisions from Hong Kong and Taiwan. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to discuss provenance description of metadata terms and metadata vocabularies as a set of metadata terms. Provenance is crucial information to keep track of changes of metadata terms and metadata vocabularies for their consistent maintenance. Design/methodology/approach: The W3C PROV standard for general provenance description and Resource Description Framework(RDF) are adopted as the base models to formally define provenance description for metadata vocabularies.Findings: This paper defines a few primitive change types of metadata terms, and a provenance description model of the metadata terms based on the primitive change types. We also provide examples of provenance description in RDF graphs to show the proposed model.Research limitations: The model proposed in this paper is defined based on a few primitive relationships(e.g. addition, deletion, and replacement) between pre-version and post-version of a metadata term. The model is simplified and the practical changes of metadata terms can be more complicated than the primitive relationships discussed in the model. Practical implications: Formal provenance description of metadata vocabularies can improve maintainability of metadata vocabularies over time. Conventional maintenance of metadata terms is the maintenance of documents of terms. The proposed model enables effective and automated tracking of change history of metadata vocabularies using simple formal description scheme defined based on widely-used standards.Originality/value: Changes in metadata vocabularies may cause inconsistencies in the longterm use of metadata. This paper proposes a simple and formal scheme of provenance description of metadata vocabularies. The proposed model works as the basis of automated maintenance of metadata terms and their vocabularies and is applicable to various types of changes. 展开更多

In the process of developing English reading ability,vocabulary is one of the basic English abilities.In the School of Foreign Languages,Sichuan Technology and Business University,because of the guidance and supervision of their teachers,in the first or the second year of their college,many students have shown great enthusiasm towards English learning,and taken initiative in reciting TEM-4 vocabularies,which in turn,leads to the passing of TEM-4.Nonetheless,after entering the second semester of junior year,their English learning becomes more flexible,and they would like to spend more time in their internships or part-time jobs.When TEM-8 is in the offing,some seniors even would choose to take the examination without preparation.In view of this,seniors in the School of Foreign Languages are chosen as the subjects to explore the effects of vocabulary size on English major seniors’reading comprehension and provide reference for them.In this study,subjects are the seniors of class 1,2016 English major who have passed TEM-4,and the quantitative research method is adopted.All the subjects involved in this study need to take two tests.One is the vocabulary size test,in which the vocabulary size testing software(embedded in BaiCiZhan v7.0.2)is used to test the quantity of subjects’recognition vocabulary.And the other is TEM-8 reading comprehension test,which is used to test the students’reading proficiency.In addition,some subjects are selected as the interviewees to know their feelings about the tests.After the tests,SPSS 20.0 will be used to make a linear regression analysis on the subjects’vocabulary size and the their reading performance.The finding is concluded as follows:On the premise that subjects’vocabulary size reaches the requirement of TEM-4,there is still a significant correlation between students’vocabulary size and their reading performance. 展开更多

Standards to describe soil properties are well established,with many ISO specifications and a few international thesauri available for specific applications.Besides,in recent years,the European directive on "Infrastructure for Spatial Information in the European Community(INSPIRE)"has brought together most of the existing standards into a well defined model.However,the adoption of these standards so far has not reached the level of semantic interoperability,defined in the paper,which would facilitate the building of data services that reuse and combine data from different sources.This paper reviews standards for describing soil data and reports on the work done within the EC funded agINFRA project to apply Linked Data technologies to existing standards and data in order to improve the interoperability of soil datasets.The main result of this work is twofold.First,an RDF vocabulary for soil concepts based on the UML INSPIRE model was published.Second,a KOS(Knowledge Organization System)for soil data was published and mapped to existing relevant KOS,based on the analysis of the SISI database of the CREA of Italy.This work also has a methodological value,in that it proposes and applies a methodology to standardize metadata used in local scientific databases,a very common situation in the scientific domain.Finally,this work aims at contributing towards a wider adoption of the INSPIRE directive,by providing an RDF version of it. 展开更多

There is ample research on the vocabulary learning strategies used by EFL and ESL learners.Moreover,many researchers have attempted to discern the effectiveness of teaching vocabulary learning strategies instruction.However,the impact of using metacognitive strategies along with vocabulary learning strategies on weak language learners has not been researched.The aim of this paper is to report on the effects of training low-achiever English as a foreign language learners with vocabulary learning strategies along with metacognitive strategies on vocabulary acquisition.Two B1 level groups of students were assigned as treatment and control groups at a university in Istanbul,Turkey.A Vocabulary Strategy Use Survey was given to identify the vocabulary strategy use of the subjects at the outset of the study.The treatment group was trained on vocabulary learning strategies combined with metacognitive strategy training.The control group studied the same words without any training.A vocabulary test was administered to both groups as a post-test and the results were compared.The findings of the Post-Test demonstrated that training weak language learners with vocabulary learning strategies along with metacognitive strategies has a positive impact on helping these learners increase their lexical knowledge,as the experimental group scored higher on the post-test compared to the control group. 展开更多

The archaic functional vocabulary is highly with the legal features of formality and conservativeness and still holding a place in legal English.The Berne Convention is a good example to study the use and translation of the archaic functional vocabulary.By studying what archaic functional words or phrases are used in the Berne Convention,their meanings and the different use frequencies of them between the Berne Convention and the Copy Right Law of PRC,it has been found that arhcaic adverbs are used of low frequency,while some adjectives or adjectival groups as well as some prepositions or prepositional phrases are used of high frequencies.The use frequencies of the archaic functional vocabulary is higher in the Berne Convention than those in the Copy Right law of PRC.Some suggestions can be put forward to help improve translating Chinese legal documents into English or writing English legal documents. 展开更多

In the Semantic Web, vocabularies are defined and shared among knowledge workers to describe linked data for scientific, industrial or daily life usage. With the rapid growth of online vocabularies, there is an emergent need for approaches helping users understand vocabularies quickly. In this paper, we study the summarization of vocabularies to help users understand vocabularies. Vocabulary summarization is based on the structural analysis and pragmatics statistics in the global Semantic Web. Local Bipartite Model and Expanded Bipartite Model of a vocabulary are proposed to characterize the structure in a vocabulary and links between vocabularies. A structural importance for each RDF sentence in the vocabulary is assessed using link analysis. Meanwhile, pragmatics importance of each RDF sentence is assessed using the statistics of instantiation of its terms in the Semantic Web. Summaries are produced by extracting important RDF sentences in vocabularies under a re-ranking strategy. Preliminary experiments show that it is feasible to help users understand a vocabulary through its summary. 展开更多

This study aimed to identify the effectiveness of explicit vocabulary instruction on productive vocabulary learning in writing among intermediate school learners in Saudi Arabia,verify the existence of any statistically significant differences at the significance level of 0.01 between the mean scores of the post-test of the control group and the experimental group in the vocabulary test,and verify the existence of any statistically significant differences at the significance level of 0.01 between the mean scores of the pre-and post-test of the experimental group in the vocabulary test in favor of the post-test.The study community consisted of all intermediate school students in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,while the study sample included 30 students.The experimental method was adopted to identify the effectiveness of explicit vocabulary instruction on productive vocabulary learning in writing and the achievement test was used as the study tool.The study reached many results including there were no statistically significant differences at the significance level of 0.01 between the mean scores of the post-test of the control group and the experimental group in the vocabulary test and there were no statistically significant differences at the significance level of 0.01 between the mean scores of the pre-and post-test of the experimental group in the vocabulary test in favor of the post-test.According to these results,some recommendations and proposals were made including training English teachers at the intermediate school level in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,on explicit vocabulary instruction and conducting future researches on the trends of English teachers at the intermediate school level,in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,regarding the adoption of explicit vocabulary instruction while teaching the English language. 展开更多

Recent years have witnessed a phenomenon that major English teachers in China have adopted the traditional teaching pattern, mechanically linking English pronunciations directly with the meaning of Chinese, which gradually dampens learners’ enthusiasm. The chief purpose of this paper was to design one English vocabulary teaching lesson based on incidental acquisition. More specifically, the questions raised are, on the one hand, whether incidental vocabulary teaching imprints differences on the learning outcomes for middle school students, and, on the other hand, whether incidental acquisition results in positive feedback between teachers and students. The technique we applied was referred to as questionnaires and interviews addressed to a sample of 68 students. Focusing on the effect of incidental vocabulary acquisition, the analysis demonstrated that it could enhance students’ vocabulary capacity. In addition, it was interesting to note that excellent students and average students tended to embrace the new teaching style while underachievers were on the opposite side. On this basis, it is recommended for English teachers to design English vocabulary lessons, adopting visual, auditory, oral, reading or writing training. More precisely, they should use phonics rules and patterns, holistic learning, classified vocabulary teaching, visual illustration or multimedia teaching to give lessons effectively and expand learners’ vocabulary. 展开更多

This paper explores the current English vocabulary teaching classroom based on an eco-linguistic perspective and the Markov chain,points out the ecological imbalance in the English vocabulary classroom,and proposes measures to solve the problem and strategies to build an ecological English vocabulary learning classroom,in order to provide some reference for future English vocabulary curriculum reform and curriculum design.In this paper,a random sample of 20 students from each class was taken from an advanced arts class and an advanced science class.The results show that after a semester of teaching process,the overall English scores of the arts and science classes improved,and since,the arts classes improved more and the teachers’teaching quality was better. 展开更多

Creative N+N compounds,also known as metaphor or metonymy N+N compounds,are a productive approach to form new words.This category of words is large in number and semantically complex.Research has demonstrated that the creativity of creative N+N compounds stems from the abstract and figurative thinking of people’s cognitive mechanisms.Abstract thinking facilitates the construction of abstract concepts of nouns,while figurative thinking draws connections within and between noun concepts through association and imagination.Metaphor is a source of creative words and meanings,and Lakoff and Johnson’s conceptual metaphor theory is a favorable illustration of this innovative process.Additionally,it contributes to the development of cognitive thinking skills and creative abilities.The study of creative N+N compounds helps English learners expand their vocabulary,enhance their lexical sensitivity,and promote metaphorical thinking.From a cognitive linguistic perspective,this study focuses on the cognitive mechanisms of creative N+N compounds and reveals their advantageous implications for English vocabulary teaching. 展开更多
