Weibull Statistics in Dielectric Strength of Oil-impregnated Pressboard under Ramped AC and DC Voltages

A statistical analysis of breakdown da... AC and DC breakdown tests were performed on large populations of oil-impregnated pressboard samples. The effect of voltage ramp rate on dielectric strength has been investigated. A statistical analysis of breakdown data was carried out using the Weibull distribution. The 90% confidence intervals of Weibull graphs were calculated. The study shows that dielectric strength and shape parameter change versus ramp rate. The variations are attributed to the size and number of defects. Discharges occur from the oil to the oil-pressboard interface and lead to breakdown. DC dielectric strength is larger than that corresponding to AC voltage. This is ascribed to the dissipated energy difference under the two types of field and the fatigue produced by the alternating voltage. This phenomenon is related to space charge. Under DC stress, dielectric strength is higher under negative polarity. It is assigned to the different quantities of space charge accumulated under the two polarities. 展开更多

Rock burst is a severe disaster in mining and underground engineering,and it is important to predict the rock burst risk for minimizing the loss during the constructing process.The rock burst proneness was connected with the acoustic emission(AE) parameter in this work,which contributes to predicting the rock burst risk using AE technique.Primarily,a rock burst proneness index is proposed,and it just depends on the heterogeneous degree of rock material.Then,the quantificational formula between the value of rock burst proneness index and the accumulative AE counts in rock sample under uniaxial compression with axial strain increases is developed.Finally,three kinds of rock samples,i.e.,granite,limestone and sandstone are tested about variation of the accumulative AE counts under uniaxial compression,and the test data are fitted well with the theoretic formula. 展开更多

The mechanical behaviors of Zr43.5Cu43.5Ni4Al8Nb1,Zr55.4Cu31.6Ni4Al8Nb1,Ti32.8Zr30.2Ni5.3Cu9Be22.7(at.%)metallic glass at different strain rates were studied.For all the present alloys,the dispersion over 700 MPa was observed on the strength in the repeated dynamic compressions,which was much stronger than that of the quasi-static compressive strength.Such the dispersion of the dynamic compressive strength was well correlated with the corresponding fracture behaviors.The area of fracture surface was calculated and also showed a strong dispersion for all the fractured specimens tested at the strain rate of 500 s^-1 and 1000 s^-1.All the specimens showed a linear relationship between the square of dynamic compressive strength and the area of fracture surface in the dynamic compression tests.This phenomenon was mainly thought to be related to the difference of mean initial free volume concentration of different samples,stress concentration caused by the split Hopkinson pressure bar experimental setup and high sensitivity of defects under dynamic deformation.These findings were beneficial to deeply understand the effect of strain rate on the mechanical properties of the metallic glass. 展开更多

The main concepts discussed are brittle fracture which leads to the mechanical failure of the catalyst pellets, measurement and statistical properties of the catalyst strength data, and mechanical reliability of the catalyst pellets and their packed bed. Level excursion analysis of probabilistic quasibrittle fracture

It has widely been acknowledged that no structures can be designed to be risk free, and therefore reliability analysis plays an essential role in the design of engineering structures. The recent focus has been placed on structures made of brittle heterogenous(a.k.a. quasibrittle) materials, such as ceramics, composites, concrete, rock, cold asphalt mixture, and many more at the microscale. This paper presents a level excursion model for the analysis of probabilistic failure of quasibrittle structures, in which the failure statistics is calculated as a first passage probability. The model captures both the spatial randomness of local material resistance and the random stress field induced by microstructures(e.g. randomly distributed flaws). The model represents a generalization of the classical weakest-link model at the continuum limit and it recovers the classical Weibull distribution as an asymptotic distribution function. The paper discusses two applications of the model. The model is first applied to the strength distribution of polycrystalline silicon(poly-Si) MEMS specimens. It is shown that the model agrees well with the experimentally measured strength distributions of poly-Si MEMS specimens of different sizes. The model predicts a complete size effect curve of the mean structural strength transitioning from a vanishing size effect at the small-size limit to the classical Weibull size effect at the large-size limit. The second application is concerned with the left tail of strength distribution of quasibrittle structures.By taking into account both random stress and strength fields, the model is used to investigate the origin of the power-law tail distribution of structural strength. 展开更多

The morphology of double oxide film defects and their influence on the tensile mechanical properties of a commercial Cu-Al (C95800) alloy were investigated in this study. Plane castings were produced with two types of pouting systems, and their tensile properties were measured and then analyzed by means of Weibull statistics method. The fracture surfaces of the tensile specimens were examined using scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy-dispersive spectroscopy. A large amount of double oxide film defects were observed on the tensile fractured specimens of the topfilled plane castings, and their chemical composition is identified to be Al2O3. Weibull statistics analyses showed that the double oxide film defects significantly reduce mechanical properties of the castings investigated. Furthermore, the ultimate tensile strength is more obviously deteriorated by double oxide film defects than elongation. 展开更多
