Large Language Models(LLMs),exemplified by ChatGPT,have significantly reshaped text generation,particularly in the realm of writing assistance.While ethical considerations underscore the importance of transparently ac...Large Language Models(LLMs),exemplified by ChatGPT,have significantly reshaped text generation,particularly in the realm of writing assistance.While ethical considerations underscore the importance of transparently acknowledging LLM use,especially in scientific communication,genuine acknowledgment remains infrequent.A potential avenue to encourage accurate acknowledging of LLM-assisted writing involves employing automated detectors.Our evaluation of four cutting-edge LLM-generated text detectors reveals their suboptimal performance compared to a simple ad-hoc detector designed to identify abrupt writing style changes around the time of LLM proliferation.We contend that the development of specialized detectors exclusively dedicated to LLM-assisted writing detection is necessary.Such detectors could play a crucial role in fostering more authentic recognition of LLM involvement in scientific communication,addressing the current challenges in acknowledgment practices.展开更多

The style in which it is written is significant because it obscures rather than reveals the text＇s philo...The Zhuangzi is a collection of ancient Chinese anecdotes and fables that serves as a foundational Daoist text. The style in which it is written is significant because it obscures rather than reveals the text＇s philosophic positions. If the text cannot be translated into plain language while preserving its content, as the Mozi or the Mencius generally can be, then the writing style is not merely rhetorical. The style is itself indispensable to the content. In this study, I analyse a linguistic device mentioned in the Zhuangzi and use it to reflect the text＇s wn＇ting style——namely, ＂goblet words＂ （zhi yan 巵言）. I argue that various logical forms of goblet words defy the act of fixing a definite answer in any conceptual distinction or disputation. The forms, which include dilemmatic questions, oxymora and double denial, all serve to preserve indeterminacy. Reading goblet words may affect readers by making them more open-minded towards distinctions. However, readers cannot ascertain that the text＇s authors produced this effect intentionally. Therefore, the text may cause readers to be open-minded while the authors remain free of commitment.展开更多

This paper focuses on the an...Literature about Hemingway＇s writing style has been fully explored in the past 80 years, while his style has not yet been well probed into from the perspective of corpus-based stylistics. This paper focuses on the analysis of his writing style as a news reporter and as a literary writer in order to investigate whether there exists some links between the two or whether his training as a reporter has any effect on his writing as fiction writer. By employing a corpus-based stylistic approach, the paper analyzes in great details Hemingway＇s early news writing in Kansas City Star （ 1917-1918） and his later fiction writing in the novella The Old Man and the Sea （1952）. The stylistic features at lexical level are explored quantitatively in both writings via statistical data. The paper concludes that Hemingway＇s writing style has his own heritage. The style in his early news articles does find its way into his later fiction writing. There do exist certain similarities in the choices of lexical items and phrasal expressions. It also indicates that a further exploration on their syntactic, rhetorical, and discourse levels is needed ira fuller picture of Hemingway＇s writing style is to be unveiled.展开更多

Through a historical lens, the author examines the era immediately following China＇s reform and opening-up when the political ideal of ＂distribution according to work＂ （anlao fenpei） had met with social realities at that time. Departing from the mainstream approach to Wang Zengqi, which oversimplifies China＇s process of reforms and opening and consequently reduces Wang Zengqi＇s literature to a ＂pure literature＂ devoid of social implications, a lyricism of individuals, and a depiction of depoliticized everyday life, this article lays emphasis on the interconnection between Wang Zengqi＇s time and his writings. By analyzing the forms and styles of Wang＇s novels, the author endeavors to place his writings back in their historical context as a means of rediscovering their underlying meanings and politics hitherto neglected by the scholarship on Chinese literature from the 1980s. Therefore, this article refutes the misconception of Wang Zengqi being a ＂small writer＂ and acknowledges the writer＇s ＂bigness＂ in his writing. In fact, big writers like Wang Zengqi are indispensable in the conception of new political worlds under any historical condition.展开更多
