Deep carbonate rocks are important targets for oil and gas exploration in China. In recent years, significant oil/gas discoveries have been made in the deep carbonate sequences in the Tarim, Sichuan, Ordos, and Bohai Bay basins. Despite significant oil/gas discoveries, large-scale exploration has not been conducted in the Gucheng area in the Tarim Basin. To break the bottleneck restricting the petroleum exploration in the Gucheng area, this study analyzed the factors controlling the formation of carbonate reservoirs of the Yingshan Formation in the Gucheng area in detail based on the basic geological conditions of the study area and the data from cores, thin sections, well logging, testing, and 3-D seismic survey. The inner shallow-ramp in the Gucheng area acts as the main sedimentary facies zone for the development of high-quality reservoirs. The grainstones formed in the high-energy environment of the inner shallow-ramp laid the foundation for subsequent reservoir development in the study area. The dolomitized shoal grainstones in the inner shallow-ramp have well-developed intercrystalline pores and intercrystalline dissolved pores due to later dolomitization, thus serving as high-quality reservoirs. Strike-slip faults are crucial to reservoir reformation and determine whether high production can be achieved in oil and gas exploitation in the study area. Moreover, later reformation by hydrothermal solutions also plays a constructive role in reservoir formation. 展开更多

Objective Oil and gas are abundant in the Ordovician Yingshan Formation carbonate karst reservoirs on the northern slope of Tazhong uplift in the Tarim Basin, and have extremely complicated oil-gas-water distribution, however. The difference in burial depth of the reservoirs between east and west sides is up to 1000 m. Water-bearing formations exist between oil- and gas-bearing formations vertically and water-producing wells are drilled between oil- and gas-producing wells. Macroscopically, oil and gas occur at low positions, while water occurs at high positiona on the northern slope of Tazhong uplift. The mechanism of differential hydrocarbon enrichment in heterogeneous reservoirs is by far not clarified, which has affected the efficient exploration and development of oil and gas fields in this area. 展开更多

With the theoretical and technological developments related to cratonic strike-slip faults, the Shuntuoguole Low Uplift in the Tarim Basin has attracted considerable attention recently.Affected by multi-stage tectonic movements, the strike-slip faults have controlled the distribution of hydrocarbon resources owing to the special fault characteristics and fault-related structures. In contrast, the kinematics and formation mechanism of strike-slip faults in buried sedimentary basins are difficult to investigate, limiting the discussion of these faults and hydrocarbon accumulation. In this study,we identified the characteristics of massive sigmoidal tension gashes(STGs)that formed in the Shunnan area of the Tarim Basin.High-resolution three-dimensional seismic data and attribute analyses were used to investigate their geometric and kinematic characteristics. Then, the stress state of each point of the STGs was calculated using seismic curvature attributes. Finally, the formation mechanism of the STGs and their roles in controlling hydrocarbon migration and accumulation were discussed. The results suggest that:(1)the STGs developed in the Shunnan area have a wide distribution, with a tensile fault arranged in an enéchelon pattern, showing an S-shaped bending. These STGs formed in multiple stages, and differential rotation occurred along the direction of strike-slip stress during formation.(2)Near the principal displacement zone of the strike-slip faults, the stress value of the STGs was higher, gradually decreasing at both ends. The shallow layer deformation was greater than the deep layer deformation.(3)STGs are critical for connecting source rocks, migrating oil and gas, sealing horizontally, and developing efficient reservoirs. This study not only provides seismic evidence for the formation and evolution of super large STGs,but also provides certain guidance for oil and gas exploration in this area. 展开更多

The oil and gas exploration of the Middle and Lower Cambrian in the Tarim Basin reveals widely distributed source rocks with the Yuertusi Formation being recognized as high-quality source rocks that are distributed in a rather small range. The Xiaoerbulake Formation that is right under the Yuertusi Formation has also been eyed as potential high-quality source rocks and is studied through analyses focusing on the stratigraphic development, the abundance, type, and maturity of organic matter, and the paleoproductivity of a dark-colored algae dolomite within the formation. The results show that the dolomite is rich in organic matter of mainly types I and II kerogens.Although reached the high mature to over-mature stage, the dolomite was deposited in an anoxic sedimentary environment featuring a high paleoproductivity level and a high organic carbon burial efficiency, quite favorable for the development of high-quality source rocks. The study provides material evidence to the Middle-Lower Cambrian subsalt source rock-reservoir-caprock combination model for the Tarim Basin. 展开更多

The reservoir conditions, oil and gas charge history and accumulation phases were studied for Yingshan Formation of Yuqi block, and an oil and gas accumulation model was established by using the techniques of reservoir prediction, fluorescence thin section and fluid inclusion analysis under the guidance of the theories of oil and gas accumulation. The results indicate that the main rock types in Yingshan Formation are micrite and calcarenite. The carbonate reservoirs are of cave,fracture-pore and fracture types, and their physical properties are intermediate;there are at least four oil/gas charges,i.e.late Hercynian,Yanshanian, early Himalayan and middle Himalayan(Cenozoic). The most important charge periods are late Hercynian, early Himalayan and middle Himalayan;the oil and gas accumulation model is self source-lateral expulsion of hydrocarbon-multistage accumulation,or hydrocarbon sourced from and preserved in the same old rocks-long term expulsion of hydrocarbon-multistage accumulation. 展开更多

Study of dolomite texture can contribute to understanding the process of dolomitization. This research reports textures and homogenization temperatures of dolomites from the Permian-Triassic strata in the Sichuan Basin and the Lower Paleozoic strata in the Tarim Basin, which provided insights into relationships between dolomite textures and their formation temperatures. Our results are summarized as follows:1) dolomites with well-preserved texture indicate low dolomitization temperature. However,in certain diagenetic environments, the hydrothermal dolomitization may completely or partially preserve the original texture of dolomites.2) The formation temperatures of non-planar dolomites are always higher than those of planar dolomites.3) The formation temperatures of dolomite cements are generally higher than those of replacive dolomites.4) Although the formation temperatures of saddle dolomite cements have a wide range, they show higher values than those of the planar subhedral to euhedral dolomite cements. Thus, saddle dolomites could generally be an indicator of high precipitation temperature.5) The fluid Mg/Ca ratio is another element controlling dolomite morphology.Micritic dolomites, which precipitate from hypersaline fluids with a high Mg/Ca ratio in a subaerial environment could also have features of non-planar anhedral crystal shape because of rapid nucleation and crystallization during dolomitization. 展开更多

To understand the reservoir property and hydrocarbon accumulation conditions of the Middle and Upper Ordovician intraplatform shoal between ultra-deep main strike-slip faults in Fuman Oilfield of the Tarim Basin, China, the main strike-slip faults in and around well FD1 in the basin were analyzed in terms of sedimentary facies, sequence stratigraphy, intraplatform shoal reservoir property, and oil and gas origins, based on drilling data. The Yingshan Formation intraplatform shoal between the main strike-slip faults is superimposed with low-order faults to form a new type of hydrocarbon play. Firstly, hydrocarbons generated from the Lower Cambrian Yuertusi Formation source rocks vertically migrated into the second member of Yingshan Formation through the main strike-slip faults, and then migrated laterally until they were accumulated. A small amount of oil from Well FD1 came from the Yuertusi Formation source rocks in the mature stage, and a large amount of gas originated from oil cracking in the ultra-deep reservoirs. Therefore, the secondary gas condensate reservoir in Well FD1 is characterized by high gas to oil ratio, dry gas (dryness coefficient being 0.970) and hybrid origin. This new type of hydrocarbon play characterized by intraplatform shoal and low-order fault suggests a prospect of continuous hydrocarbon-bearing area in Fuman Oilfield, which will expand the ultrap-deep oil and gas exploration in the oilfield. 展开更多

Objective The Yubei area is located in the mid-east Maigaiti slope of southwestern Tarim Basin, China, with an exploration history of several years. Recent exploration has preliminarily indicated that the Ordovician carbonate formations in this area have some oil and gas potential. Carbonate microfacies provides material basis for reservoir development, seal formation and hydrocarbon generation. Therefore, this work utilized the standard microfacies (SMF) types to study the microfacies of the Ordovician formations in the Yubei area in order to provide theoretical basis for the next exploration. 展开更多

Ancient marine carbonates experienced complex modifications, making it difficult to identify reservoir genesis and effective porosity before hydrocarbon migration. To solve these issues,we used element mapping and carbonate mineral laser U-Pb radiometric dating techniques to study the diagenetic environments based on geochemistry and diagenesis-porosity evolution based on geochronology of the dolomite reservoir of the Sinian Qigebrak Formation, northwest Tarim Basin. Two major understandings were obtained as follows:(1)Supported by petrographic observations, the element mapping, stable isotopes, strontium isotope, and cathodoluminescence tests were performed on different phases of dolomite cements precipitated in vugs and dissolved fissures. The results show that the dolomite reservoirs of the Qigebrak Formation went through freshwater, marine, extremely shallow burial, burial and hydrothermal diagenetic environments after synsedimentary dolomitization;the reservoir spaces were mainly formed in the synsedimentary period(primary pores)and freshwater environment(supergene dissolution pores)before burial;whereas the marine, burial and hydrothermal environments caused the gradual filling of reservoir space by dolomite cements.(2)Based on the above understandings, each phase of dolomite cement precipitated in the reservoir space was dated by the U-Pb radiometric dating technique, and the diagenesis-porosity evolution curves constrained by geochronology were established. The loss of reservoir porosity mainly occurred in the early Caledonian, and during the peak period of hydrocarbon generation of Yuertusi Formation source rock, the reservoirs still maintained at a porosity of 6%?10%.The above understandings provide a certain basis for the evaluation of accumulation effectiveness of the Sinian Qigebrak Formation, northwestern Tarim Basin, and provide a case for the application of mapping and dating techniques in the study of ancient carbonate reservoirs. 展开更多

Potash deposits commonly accumulate in highly restricted settings at the final stage of brine evaporation. This does not mean that potash deposits are formed simply as a result of the evaporation concentration of seawater or lake water, but rather as a coupling result of particular provenance, tectonics and climate activities. In this paper, we focus on the formative mechanism of the potash deposits of Lop Nur depression in Tarim Basin to interpret the detailed coupling mechanism among provenance, tectonics and climate. In terms of the provenance of Lop Nur Lake, the water of the Tarim River which displays "potassium-rich" characteristics play an important role. In addition, the Pliocene and Lower-Middle Pleistocene clastic beds surrounding Lop Nur Lake host a certain amount of soluble potassium and thus serves as "source beds" for potash formation. During the late Pliocene, the Lop Nur region has declined and evolved into a great lake from the previous piedmont and diluvial fan area. Since the mid Pleistocene, the great-united Lop Nur Lake has been separated and has generated a chain system consisting of Taitema Lake, Big Ear Lake and Luobei Lake which has turned into the deepest sag in Lop Nur Lake. Dry climate in Lop Nur region has increased since the Pliocene, and became extreme at the late Pleistocene. The study implies that potash formation in Lop Nur Lake depends on the optimal combination of extreme components of provenance, tectonics and climate during a shorter-term period. The optimal patterns of three factors are generally characterized by the long-term accumulation and preliminary enrichment of potassium, the occurrence of the deepest sub-depression and the appearance of an extremely arid climate in Lop Nur region. These factors have been interacting synergistically since the forming of the saline lake and in the later stages strong "vapor extraction" caused by extremely arid climate is needed to trigger large scale mineralization of potash deposits. 展开更多

In order to elucidate the origin and migration of basinal brines in the Bachu Bulge, Tarim Basin, we have carried out analyses on chemical composition, and boron, hydrogen and oxygen isotopes of formation waters together with the XRD of clay minerals from the Paleozoic strata. The waters show Ca, B, Li and Sr enrichment and SO4 depletion in the Carboniferous and Ordovician and K enrichment in part of the Ordovician relative to seawater. The relationship between δD and δ^18O shows that all the data of the waters decline towards the Global Meteoric Water Line with the intersection of them close to the present-day local meteoric water, suggesting that modern meteoric water has mixed with evaporated seawater. The ^87Sr/^86Sr ratios range from 0.7090 to 0.7011, significantly higher than those of the contemporary seawater. The δ^11B values range from +19.7 to +32.3‰, showing a decrease with the depth and B concentrations. The results suggest that isotopically distinct B and Sr were derived from external sources. However, since the percentages of illite are shown to increase with depth among clay minerals in the study area, i.e., illite is due to precipitation rather than leaching during deeper burial, it is unlikely for illite to have contributed a significant amount of B to the waters. Thus, B with low δ^11B values is interpreted to have been added mainly from thermal degradation of kerogen or the basalts in the Cambrian and Lower Ordovician. 展开更多

An integrated petrographical and geochemical study of the massive dolomite of the lower Ordovician Penglaiba Formation of the Tarim Basin, outcropping at Yonganba recognized three dolomite types:very finely to finely crystalline nonplanar-a to planar-s dolomite(D1);medium crystalline planar-s to planar-e dolomite(D2);and coarse crystalline nonplanar-a dolomite(D3).All have been affected by burial.D1 and D2 dolomites developed initially before or during shallow burial and later recrystallized, whereas D3 dolomite replaced the initial limestone entirely during burial. All three dolomites have similar geochemical features. The D2 dolomite tends to have more inter-crystalline pores(inherited from primary pores)and higher porosity due to its outstanding compaction resistance during shallow burial;whereas D3 dolomite does not retain appreciable primary pores due to strong cementation and pressure dissolution before dolomitization. This study provides a useful model for understanding the origin and porosity development of burial dolomite,in particular Paleozoic dolomite. 展开更多

There are three formation stages of Silurian hydrocarbon pools in the Tarim Basin. The widely distributed asphaltic sandstones in the Tazhong (central Tarim) and Tabei (northern Tarim) areas are the results of destruction of hydrocarbon pools formed in the first-stage, and the asphaltic sandstones around the Awati Sag were formed in the second-stage. A number of condensate reservoirs with high concentrations of H2S have been discovered in the deep dolomite reservoirs of the lower Ordovician Yingshan Formation(O1y) in the Tazhong Uplift, where the formation water has a high p H value. In the O1y reservoir, the concentrations of Mg^2+ and SO4^2-in the formation water are higher than those in the upper Ordovician formation. The concentration of H2 S in the condensate reservoirs and the concentration of Mg^2+in the formation water correlate well in the O1y reservoirs of the Tazhong Uplift, which indicates a presumed thermochemical sulfate reduction(TSR) origin of H2S according to the oxidation theory of contact ion-pairs(CIPs). Besides, the p H values of the formation water are positively correlated with the concentration of H2S in the condensate reservoirs, which may indicate that high p H might be another factor to promote and maintain TSR. Oil–source correlation of biomarkers in the sulfuretted condensates indicates the Cambrian source rocks could be the origin of condensates. The formation water in the condensate reservoirs of O1y is similar to that in the Cambrian; therefore, the TSR of sulfate-CIPs likelyoccurred in the Cambrian. High H2S-bearing condensates are mainly located near the No. 1 Fault and NE-SW strikeslip faults, which are the major migration pathway of deep fluids in the Tazhong Uplift. The redox between sulfateCIPs and hydrocarbons is the generation mechanism of H2S in the deep dolomite condensate reservoirs of the Tazhong Uplift. This finding should be helpful to predict the fluid properties of deep dolomite reservoirs. 展开更多

Take the Cambrian Xiaoerblak Formation in the Keping(Kalpin) outcrop area as an example, a 28 km reservoir scale geological model was built based on description of 7 profiles, observation of more than 1000 thin sections, petrophysical analysis of 556 samples and many geochemical tests. The Xiaoerblak Formation, 158–178 m thick, is divided into three members and 5 submembers, and is composed of laminated microbialite dolomite(LMD), thrombolite dolomite(TD), foamy-stromatolite dolomite(FSD), oncolite dolomite(OD), grain dolomite(GD)/crystalline dolomite with grain ghost and micritic dolomite(MD)/argillaceous dolomite. The petrology features show that its sediment sequence is micro-organism layer – microbial mound/shoal – tidal flat in carbonate ramp background from bottom up. The reservoir has 5 types of pores, namely, framework pore, dissolved vug, intergranular and intragranular dissolved pore and intercrystalline dissolved pore, as main reservoir space. It is found that the development of pore has high lithofacies selectivity, FSD has the highest average porosity, TD, OD and GD come second. The reservoir is pore-vug reservoir with medium-high porosity and medium-low permeability. The dolomite of Xiaoerblak Formation was formed in para-syngenetic to early diagenetic stage through dolomitization caused by seawater. The reservoir development is jointly controlled by sedimentary facies, micro-organism type, high frequency sequence interface and early dolomitization. The classⅠand Ⅱ reservoirs, with an average thickness of 41.2 m and average reservoir-stratum ratio of about 25.6%, have significant potential. It is predicted that the microbial mounds and shoals in the middle ramp around the ancient uplift are the favorable zones for reservoir development. 展开更多

Based on analysisof karst fracture-vuggy filling mineralogy and geochemical fluorite in hercynian, this paper make further research about formation and significance of fluorite in central uplift of Tarim Basin. It is point out that the development of hercynian fracture-vuggy and filling succession of fracture-cave mineral was under the background of the mingling of low-temperature magma hydrotherm and the brine of upper strata. There are overlap or associate relations between generate of fluorite and buried dissolution or oil-gas migration. It was volume decreased 26.4% after calcite metasomatic by fluorite, this reaction made fluorite engender plentiful intergranular space. It’s created appreciable reservoir space. At same time, hydrotherm carried by fluorite generating could erode adjacent rock though fracture or fissure, forming irregular fracture-cave system, and also accompanied with hydrocarbon migration. The time of hydrocarbon migration and accumulation happened in late hercynian-indosinian is inosculates with the sedimentation time such as fluorite and several hydrothermal mineral. 展开更多

Taking the Cambrian Yuertus Formation outcrop profiles in the Aksu-Keping-Wushi areas of northwestern Tarim Basin as examples, the depositional environments of organic rich fine sediment were analyzed by examining the outcrop profiles macroscopically and microscopically. The study reveals that:(1) The lower part of the Yuertus Formation consists of organic-rich fine sediment or thin rhythmic interbeds of organic-rich fine sediment and siliceous sediment, the formation transforms to terrigenous diamictic grain shoal and inverse grading carbonate rocks upward.(2) The thin limestone interbedded with dark shale rhythmically has inverse grading.(3) The thin-bedded siliceous rock has metasomatic residual granular texture, stromatolithic structure and cementation fabric in vugs.(4) There are iron crust layers at the top of the shallowing diamictic grain shoal, beneath which exposed karst signs, such as karrens, dissolved fissures, sack-like vugs, near surface karst(plastic) breccia, breccia inside the karst system and terrigenous clastic fillings, can be seen.(5) Both the outcrops and seismic profiles show that organic-rich fine sediments above the unconformities or exposed surfaces are characterized by overlapping. The organic-rich fine sediment of the Cambrian Yuertus Formation was deposited in the anoxic-suboxidized restricted gulf lagoon environment, and its formation was controlled by high paleoproductivity and poor oxygen exchange jointly, then a shallow-water overlapping sedimentary model has been established. The results will help enrich and improve the sedimentary theory of organic-rich fine sediments. 展开更多

The Donghetang Formation (Upper Devonian) in central Tarim Basin has been thought an important oil and gas reservoir since the abundant oil and gas resources were found in the wells W16, W20, W34, and other fields. However, the sedimentary environment of the Donghetang Formation has been disputed because it suffered from both tidal and fluvial actions and there were not rich fossils in the sandstone. After the authors analyzed sedimentary features by means of drill cores, well logging data, paleosols, and with SEM obseruations, three kinds of sedimentary environments were distinguished: alluvial fan, tide-dominated estuary, and shelf. Particularly, the sedimentary features of tide-dominated estuary were studied in detail. Besides, the authors discussed sedimentary characteristics of the Donghetang Formation which was divided into two fourth-order sequences and five system tracts. At the same time, according to the forming process of five system tracts, the whole vertical evolution and lateral transition of tide-dominated estuary were illustrated clearly. Finally, the reservoir quality was evaluated based on porosity and permeability. 展开更多

With a comprehensive study on the petrology, geology and geochemistry of some Ordovician granule limestone samples in the Tahe Oiifieid of the Tarim Basin, two stages of burial dissolution were put forward as an in-source dissolution and out-source dissolution based on macro-microcosmic petrology and geochemistry features. The main differences in the two stages are in the origin and moving pass of acid fluids. Geochemical evidence indicates that burial dissolution fluids might be ingredients of organic acids, CO2 and H2S associated with organic matter maturation and hydrocarbon decomposition, and the in-source fluid came from organic matter in the granule limestone itself, but the out-source was mainly from other argillaceous carbonate rocks far away. So, the forming of a burial dissolution reservoir resulted from both in-source and the out-source dissolutions. The granule limestone firstly formed unattached pinholes under in-source dissolution in situ, and afterwards suffered wider dissolution with out-source fluids moving along unconformities, seams, faults and associate fissures. The second stage was much more important, and the mineral composition in the stratum and heat convection of the fluid were also important in forming favorable reservoirs. 展开更多

Using field geological survey, drilling and seismic data, combined with the study of regional tectonic evolution and structural deformation,as well as lithological and sedimentary analysis,we reconstructed the basin filling process and paleo-geography of north Tarim Basin in Early Cambrian, aiming to analyze the factors controlling the distribution and spatial architecture of the subsalt reservoir and source units and to define the favorable exploration direction. The Late Sinian tectonic activities in the northern Tarim Basin were characterized by different patterns in different areas, which controlled the sedimentary pattern in the Early Cambrian. The boundary faults of Nanhuaian rift basin in the south slope of Tabei uplift and the north slope of Tazhong uplift became reactivated in the Early Cambrian, forming two NEE and EW striking subsidence centers and depocenters, where the predicted thickness of the Yurtusi Formation could reach 250 meters. In the Xiaoerbulake period, the weak rimmed platform was developed in the hanging wall of syndepositional fault.Whereas the Nanhuaian rift system in the Tadong and Manxi areas were uplifted and destroyed in the Late Sinian, and appeared as gently slope transiting toward the subsidence center in the Early Cambrian. The former had the sedimentary features of hybrid facies platform and the latter had the sedimentary features of ramp platform. The black shale of the Yurtus Formation in the footwall of syndepositional fault and the reef bank of Xiaoerbulake Formation platform margin in the hanging wall in Early Cambrian constitute a predicable source-reservoir combination. The activity intensity of syndepositional fault controlled the thickness of black shale and the scale of the reef bank.It is suggested carrying out high accuracy seismic exploration to determine the location of Early Cambrian syndepositional faults,on this basis,to search the reef bank of Xiaoerbulake Formation along the faults westward, and then drill risk exploration wells at sites where traps are shallow in buried depth. 展开更多
