A positive correlation has been found between gut microbiota at birth and the development of asthma and skin eczema later in life. Chinese medicine has long described a functional relationship between the large intestine and the lungs, and between the lungs and skin. In this short article, we examined the evidence in support of these inter-organ physiological/pathological relationships. In addition to the clinical observation of the relationship between the composition of gut microbiota at birth and the development of asthma later in childhood, gut microorganisms have also been shown to exert a protective effect on bacteria-induced pneumonia in experimental animals. Genetic predisposition was also found to play an important role in the co-existence of certain diseases of lung and skin. Despite the fact that the mechanism(s) underlying the connection of immune systems between two organs (such as the large intestine and the lungs) is still not clearly understood, it is the first time to correlate the relationship among gut, lung and skin based on recent clinical studies in relation to the Zang-Fu Theory in Chinese medicine. Future investigation of the gut-lung and lung-skin axes in terms of physiological/pathological relationships may help to provide a greater understanding of the pathogenesis of allergies, possibly establishing relevance to the Zang-Fu Theory in Chinese medicine.展开更多

Since the uplift is so important and complex that it has been become the research focus of earth science. Nevertheless, the initial time and evolution process of the uplift is still controversial.1\ The initial time of the uplift\;Qing\|Zang plateau is a union geological\|geomorphic unit, which is composed of several geological\|structural units. Each geological\|structural unit has itself exchange history of sea\|continent (basin\|mountain); the exchange time of the different parts differs. Therefore, the initial time of some part of the plateau is not the uplift time of the whole plateau. The plateau is the highland with high height above sea level, little relief of the top, large area and steep boundary. The plateau plane is the paleo\|peneplain, which was formed by the uplift of the plateau after the peneplanation. Therefore, the initial time of the uplift should be counted from the time that the peneplain had been formed.展开更多

After reading reputed sinologists’ work on the cosmological origin and subsequent evolution of the Chinese concept of parallelism-pairing in poetry, literature, mathematic and other disciplines and since it is a tradition that all branches of knowledge in China are based on the development of those initiatory thoughts, the author asked herself if such knowing on the cosmological genesis of the parallelism concept could also be applied to Chinese medicine, science that describes its coupled structures and functions in pairs, simply based on yinyang, matrix of all pairings. Therefore, this paper proposes to apply those foundations, to explain the pairing of dynamisms in medicine. This work starts out from the oracular inscriptions in ancient times, cosmological basis of these ideas and their applications to Chinese literature and from there translates this approach to the study of the pairings described by Chinese medicine, and thanks to which (qi xue) blood-energy circulation occurs in human beings. Organic and functional pairs described by Chinese medicine are the basic element to understand the concept of health and disease, and this paper is about the cosmological roots of those pairings, the cosmic resonance influence and the numerology influence in them, and the whole is illustrated both through the description of the (obverse-reverse) biao li pair, different from (inside-outside) nei wai, and the functional relationship between these two couples.展开更多

In treatment group, the back-shu points of five zang organs were adopted for acupuncture. Shènshū(肾俞 BL23) was perpendicularly needled 15-30 mm in depth. The rest of the selected points were inserted obliquely 15-30 mm in the direction of the spine with even method of lifting-thrusting and twisting-twirling, 10 s for each acupoint. In control group, the acupoints were approximately 1.5-2 cm away outward from the back-shu points of five zang organs(about on the middle of the two sidelines of the bladder meridian of foottaiyang) and the points from the bladder meridian of foot-taiyang were excluded. Acupoints were needled6-9 mm in depth, and deqi was not required, without any manipulation. The treatments were carried out twice a week for twenty minutes each time, a total of eight treatments were given. The clinical efficacy of acupuncture treatment for CFS was evaluated through the Fatigue Scale-14(FS-14) and the Symptom Check-List 90(SCL-90) after treatment. Results: The total effective rate was 86.67% in the treatment group and 53.33% in the control group(P<0.01). In treatment group, FS-14 total scores, somatic fatigue scores, and mental fatigue scores were significantly reduced than before treatment(all P<0.01). In control group, FS-14 total scores and somatic fatigue scores were significantly reduced(both P<0.01). The improvement of FS-14 total scores, somatic fatigue scores, and mental fatigue scores in the treatment group were better than those in the control group(P<0.01, P<0.05). After treatment, SCL-90 total scores and somatization, compulsion, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, hostility, psychoticism, and other factors scores were significantly reduced in the treatment group compared with before treatment(P<0.01). In control group, the SCL-90 total scores and the scores of somatization, compulsion, hostility, and other factors after treatment were lower than those before treatment(P< 0.01). The total scores of SCL-90 and somatization, compulsion, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, psychoticism, and other factors in the treatment group were significantly lower than those in the control group(P< 0.01, P< 0.05).Conclusions: Acupuncture on back-shu points of five zang can significantly improve the somatic fatigue and mental fatigue of the patients, and at the same time improve their psychological status. Significant therapeutic effect was found on CFS. Compared with the control group, the acupuncture treatment can significantly improve the patient’s somatic fatigue, mental fatigue and psychological status.展开更多
