The evaluation of reservoir quality was accomplished on the Late Paleocene to Early Eocene Narimba Formation in Bass Basin,Australia. This study involved combination methods such as petrophysical analysis, petrography and sedimentological studies, reservoir quality and fluid flow units from derivative parameters, and capillary pressure and wetting fluid saturation relationship.Textural and diagenetic features are affecting the reservoir quality.Cementation, compaction, and presence of clay minerals such as kaolinite are found to reduce the quality while dissolution and secondary porosity are noticed to improve it.It is believed that the Narimba Formation is a potential reservoir with a wide range of porosity and permeability.Porosity ranges from 3.1%to 25.4%with a mean of 15.84%,while permeability ranges between 0.01 mD and 510 mD,with a mean of 31.05 mD.Based on the heterogenous lithology, the formation has been categorized into five groups based on permeability variations.Group I showed an excellent to good quality reservoir with coarse grains. The impacts of both textural and diagenetic features improve the reservoir and producing higher reservoir quality index(RQI)and flow zone indicators(FZI)as well as mostly mega pores. The non-wetting fluid migration has the higher possibility to flow in the formation while displacement pressure recorded as zero.Group II showed a fair quality reservoir with lower petrophysical properties in macro pores. The irreducible water saturation is increasing while the textural and digenetic properties are still enhancing the reservoir quality.Group III reflects lower quality reservoir with mostly macro pores and higher displacement pressure. It may indicate smaller grain size and increasing amount of cement and clay minerals.Group IV,and V are interpreted as a poor-quality reservoir that has lower RQI and FZI.The textural and digenetic features are negatively affecting the reservoir and are leading to smaller pore size and pore throat radii(r35)values to be within the range of macro,meso-,micro-,and nano pores. The capillary displacement pressure curves of the three groups show increases reaching the maximum value of 400 psia in group V.Agreement with the classification of permeability,r35 values, and pore type can be used in identifying the quality of reservoir. 展开更多

Existing studies have focused on the behavior of the retaining wall equipped with expanded polystyrene(EPS)geofoam inclusions under semi-infinite surcharge loading rather than limited surcharge loading. In this paper, the failure mode and the earth pressure acting on the rigid retaining wall with EPS geofoam inclusions and granular backfills(henceforth referred to as EPS-wall),under limited surcharge loading are investigated through two-and three-dimensional model tests. The testing results show that different from the sliding of almost all the backfill in the EPS-wall under semi-infinite surcharge loading, only an approximately triangular backfill slides in the wall under limited surcharge loading. The distribution of the lateral earth pressure on the EPS-wall under limited surcharge loading is non-linear,and the distribution changes from the increase of the wall depth to the decrease with the increase of the limited surcharge loading. An approach based on the force equilibrium of a differential element is developed to predict the lateral earth pressure behind the EPS-wall subjected to limited surcharge loading, and its performance was fully validated by the three-dimensional model tests. 展开更多

Spontaneous imbibition(SI)is an important mechanism for enhancing oil recovery in low-permeability reservoirs.Due to the strong heterogeneity, and the non-Darcy flow, the construction of SI model for lowpermeability reservoirs is extremely challenging.Commonly, traditional SI models based on single or averaged capillary tortuosity ignore the influence of heterogeneity of pore seepage channels and the threshold pressure(TP)on imbibition. Therefore,in this work, based on capillary model and fractal theory,a mathematical model of characterizing SI considering heterogeneity of pore seepage channels is established. On this basis, the threshold pressure was introduced to determine the pore radius at which the wetted phase can displace oil.The proposed new SI model was verified by imbibition experimental data. The study shows that for weakly heterogeneous cores with permeability of 0-1 m D,the traditional SI model can characterize the imbibition process relatively accurately, and the new imbibition model can increase the coefficient of determination by 1.05 times. However, traditional model has serious deviations in predicting the imbibition recovery for cores with permeability of 10-50 m D.The new SI model coupling with heterogeneity of pore seepage channels and threshold pressure effectively solves this problem, and the determination coefficient is increased from 0.344 to 0.922,which is increased by2.68 times. For low-permeability reservoirs, the production of the oil in transitional pores(0.01-0.1μm)and mesopores(0.1-1μm)significantly affects the imbibition recovery,as the research shows that when the heterogeneity of pore seepage channels is ignored, the oil recovery in transitional pores and mesopores decreases by 7.54%and 4.26%,respectively.Sensitivity analysis shows that increasing interfacial tension, decreasing contact angle,oil-water viscosity ratio and threshold pressure will increase imbibition recovery. In addition, there are critical values for the influence of these factors on the imbibition recovery, which provides theoretical support for surfactant optimization. 展开更多

Geological storage of acid gas has been identified as a promising approach to reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide(CO_(2)),hydrogen sulfide(H_(2)S)and alleviate public concern resulting from the sour gas production.A good understanding of the relative permeability and capillary pressure characteristics is crucial to predict the process of acid gas injection and migration. The prediction of injection and redistribution of acid gas is important to determine storage capacity, formation pressure, plume extent, shape, and leakage potential.Herein, the existing experimental data and theoretical models were reviewed to gain a better understanding of the issue how the H_(2)S content affects gas density, gas viscosity, interfacial tension, wettability, relative permeability and capillary pressure characteristics of acid gas/brine/rock systems. The densities and viscosities of the acid gas with different H_(2)S mole fractions are both temperature-and pressure-dependent,which vary among the gas, liquid and supercritical phases.Water/acid gas interfacial tension decreases strongly with increasing H_(2)S content. For mica and clean quartz, water contact angle increases with increasing H_(2)S mole fraction. In particular, wettability reversal of mica to a H_(2)S-wet behavior occurs in the presence of dense H_(2)S.The capillary pressure increases with decreasing contact angle. At a given saturation, the relative permeability of a fluid is higher when the fluid is nonwetting. The capillary pressure decreases with decreasing interfacial tension at a given saturation. However, the existing datasets do not show a consistent link between capillary number and relative permeability. The capillary pressure decreases with increasing H_(2)S mole fraction. However, there is no consensus on the effect of the H_(2)S content on the relative permeability curves. This may be due to the limited availability of the relative permeability and capillary pressure data for acid gas/brine/rock systems;thus, more experimental measurements are required. 展开更多

By analyzing hundreds of capillary pressure curves, the controlling factors of shape and type of capillary pressure curves are found and a novel method is presented to construct capillary pressure curves by using reservoir permeability and a synthesized index. The accuracy of this new method is verified by mercury-injection experiments. Considering the limited quantity of capillary pressure data, a new method is developed to extract the Swanson parameter from the NMR T2 distribution and estimate reservoir permeability. Integrating with NMR total porosity, reservoir capillary pressure curves can be constructed to evaluate reservoir pore structure in the intervals with NMR log data. An in-situ example of evaluating reservoir pore structure using the capillary pressure curves by this new method is presented. The result shows that it accurately detects the change in reservoir pore structure as a function of depth. 展开更多

The sessile drop method was applied to the experimental investigation of the wetting and spreading behaviors of liquid Mg drops on pure Ni substrates. For comparison, the experiments were performed in two variants:(1)using the Capillary Purification(CP)procedure, which allows the non-contact heating and squeezing of a pure oxide-free Mg drop;(2)by classical Contact Heating(CH)procedure. The high-temperature tests were performed under isothermal conditions(CP:760℃for 30 s;CH:715℃for 300 s)using Ar+5 wt%H_(2) atmosphere.During the sessile drop tests, images of the Mg/Ni couples were recorded by CCD cameras(57 fps),which were then applied to calculate the contact angles of metal/substrate couples.Scanning and transmission electron microscopy analyses, both coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, were used for detailed structural characterization of the solidified couples. It was found that an oxide-free Mg drop obtained by the CP procedure showed a wetting phenomenon on the Ni substrate(an average contact angleθ<90°in<1 s),followed by fast spreading and good wetting over the Ni substrate(θ_((CP))~20°in 5 s)to form a final contact angle ofθ_(f(CP))~18°.In contrast,a different wetting behavior was observed for the CH procedure, where the unavoidable primary oxide film on the Mg surface blocked the spreading of liquid Mg showing apparently non-wetting behavior after 300 s contact at the test temperature. However,in both cases, the deep craters formed in the Ni substrates under the Mg drops and significant change in the structure of initially pure Mg drops to Mg-Ni alloys suggest a strong dissolution of Ni in liquid Mg and apparent values of the final contact angles measured for the Mg/Ni system. 展开更多

To better understand the relationship between the pore capillary pressure and hydrate saturation in sediments, a new method was proposed. First, the phase equilibria of methane hydrate in fine-grained silica sands were measured. As to the equilibrium data, the pore capillary pressure and saturation of methane hydrate were calculated. The results showed that the phase equilibria of methane hydrates in fine-grained silica sands changed due to the depressed activity of pore water caused by the surface group and negatively charged characteristic of silica particles as well as the capillary pressure in small pores together. The capillary pressure increased with the increase of methane hydrate saturation due to the decrease of the available pore space. However, the capillary-saturation relationship could not yet be described quantitatively because of the stochastic habit of hydrate growth. 展开更多

The equations governing wind-induced internal pressure responses for a two-compartment building with a dominant opening and background porosity were derived. The unsteady form of the Bernoulli equation, the law of mass conservation, and adiabatic equation were used for the derivation. The precision of the governing equations was verified by a wind tunnel test on a rigid model of a low-rise building. The results show that the governing equations can effectively analyze the wind-induced internal pressure responses. The internal pressure responses in both compartments are suppressed due to the additional damping provided by background porosity. The responses of internal pressure in both compartments, especially in the compartment without an external opening, decrease with increased lumped leakage area. 展开更多

During CO2 injection in deep saline aquifers, salt precipitation happens around the injection well because of capillary driven back flow, inducing permeability impairment. The permeability impairment affects CO2 injectivity and migration. Different values of three characteristic parameters for capillary pressure function (air entry pressure, empirical parameter m and liquid residual saturation) as well as input absolute value of maximum capillary are chosen in numerical simulation to figure out their effects on salt precipitation. Verma & Pruess model is then used for quantifying permeability impairment. Results show that permeability decreases with higher air entry pressure, larger liquid residual saturation, and especially smaller value of empirical parameter m. To enhance CO2 injectivity and avoid blocking of CO2 migration, a homogenous formation with large pore size should be chosen before CO2 injection into deep saline aquifer. 展开更多

Impulse waves that are generated by landslides in narrow reservoir areas threaten the stability of buildings and bank slopes. To discuss the action process and evolution law of the wave pressure on bank slopes,a three-dimensional physical model test that considers impulse waves generated by landslides was performed, and factors including landslide width, thickness, slope angles of the sliding surface, and bank slope angle were considered.Based on wave forms on the bank slopes, wave pressure curve characteristics, and peak value, the action process of wave pressure could be divided into the following stages:maximum pulsating pressure stage, wave impact stage(when waves break),and stationary pulsation stage. It was found that wave breaking is dependent on the value of the surf similarity parameterξ.The distribution pattern of impact pressure decays linearly on both sides of the maximum impact pressure point, and the attenuation degree decreases when it attains 40%of the maximum value. Thus,it is proposed that the prediction formula for the maximum effective impact pressure of the bank slope be related to the reciprocal of wave steepness, relative water depth, and slope rate. The prediction formula provides strong theoretical support for early safety warning and for predicting the bank slope under impulse waves generated by landslides. 展开更多

Moraines, characterized by the accumulation of rock and soil debris transported by glacial activity, present unique challenges for tunnel construction, particularly in portal sections, due to prevailing geographical and climatic conditions that facilitate freeze-thaw action.Despite these challenges, there is a dearth of studies investigating the influence of freeze-thaw action and water content on the mechanical properties of moraines, and no research on calculating surrounding rock pressure in moraine tunnels subjected to freeze-thaw conditions. In this study, direct shear tests under freeze-thaw cycles were conducted to examine the effects of freeze-thaw cycles and water content on the mechanical properties of frozen moraine.A comprehensive parameter K,integrating the number of freeze-thaws and water content, was introduced to model cohesion c.Drawing on Terzaghi Theory,we propose an improved algorithm for calculating surrounding rock pressure at the portal section of moraine tunnels.Using a tunnel as a case study, surrounding rock pressure was calculated under various conditions to validate the Improved Algorithm's efficacy. The results show that:(1)Strength loss exhibits a linear trend with the number of freeze-thaw cycles at water content levels of 4%and 8%,while at 12%water content, previous freeze-thaw cycles induce more significant damage to the soil.(2)Moraine saturation peaks between 8%and 12%water content.Following repeated freeze-thaw cycles, moraine shear strength initially increases before decreasing with varying water content.(3)The internal friction angle of moraine experiences slight reductions with prolonged freeze-thaw cycles, but both freeze-thaw cycles and water content significantly influence cohesion.(4)Vertical surrounding rock pressure increases after the initial freeze-thaw cycle, particularly with higher water content, although freeze-thaw cycles have minimal effect on it.(5)Freeze-thaw cycles lead to a substantial increase in lateral surrounding rock pressure, necessitating reinforced support structures at the arch wall, arch waist, and arch foot in engineering projects to mitigate freeze-thaw effects. This study provides a foundation for designing and selecting tunnel support structures in similar geological conditions. 展开更多

Karst sinkholes with natural negative landform provide favorable conditions for the pumped storage reservoir construction for less excavation work. However, the construction of the reservoir would plug the natural karst channels for water and air, which would cause remarkable air pressure in karst channels when the groundwater level fluctuates.A large laboratory simulation test was carried out to study the air pressure variation of a reservoir built on the karst sinkhole. The air pressure in the karst channel and inside the model was monitored during the groundwater rising and falling process.Result showed that the variation of air pressure in the karst channel and the surrounding rock exhibited a high degree of similarity. The air pressure increased rapidly at the initial stage of water level rising, followed by a slight decrease, then the air pressure increased sharply when the water level approached the top of the karst cave. The initial peak of air pressure and the final peak of air pressure were defined, and both air pressure peaks were linearly increasing with the water level rising rate. The negative air pressure was also analyzed during the drainage process, which was linearly correlated with the water level falling rate. The causes of air pressure variation in karst channels of a pumped storage reservoir built on the karst sinkhole were discussed. The initial rapid increase, then slight decrease and final sudden increase of air pressure were controlled by the combined effects of air compression in karst channel and air seepage into the surrounding rock. For the drainage process, the instant negative air pressure and gradual recovering of air pressure were controlled by the combined effects of negative air pressure induced by water level falling and air supply from surrounding rock. This work could provide valuable reference for the reservoir construction in karst area. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Although the spasm provocation test(SPT)can diagnose coronary spasms,it would be helpful if it could also predict their occurrence.AIM To investigate whether coronary spasms can be predicted using changes in intracoronary artery pressure measured using a pressure wire during the SPT.METHODS Seventy patients underwent SPTs with pressure-wire measurement of intracoronary artery pressure.During each SPT,the pressure wire was advanced into the distal portion of the right coronary artery(RCA)and left anterior descending coronary artery, and the ratio of intracoronary pressure to aortic pressure(Pd/Pa)was monitored.Coronary spasm was defined as an arterial narrowing of>90%in response to the administration of acetylcholine(ACh),with chest symptoms and/or ischemic electrocardiographic changes.ACh was administered to the RCA at low, moderate,or high doses of 20,50,or 80μg,respectively,and to the left coronary artery(LCA)at low, moderate,or high doses of 50,100,or 200μg,respectively.Coronary arteries with coronary spasms at low doses of ACh were defined as group L,and those with coronary spasms at moderate or high doses were defined as group MH.Those who did not occur coronary spasms at any ACh dose were designated as group N.RESULTS Among the 132 coronary arteries assessed using a pressure wire, there were 49 in group N,25 in group L,and 58 in group MH.Baseline Pd/Pa was the lowest in group L(P=0.001).The decrease in the Pd/Pa between baseline to low doses of ACh was lower in group MH than in group N(P<0.001).A receiver-operating characteristics analysis showed that the cutoff baseline Pd/Pa value for predicting group L was 0.95,with a sensitivity of 0.600(15/25)and a specificity of 0.713(76/107)and that the cutoff value of Pd/Pa from baseline to low doses of ACh for predicting group MH was−0.04,with a sensitivity of 0.741(43/58)and a specificity of 0.694(34/49).CONCLUSION These findings suggest that indices of intracoronary pressure during SPT may be useful means for predicting the occurrence of coronary spasms. 展开更多

The intensification of physicochemical processes in the sonochemical reactor chamber is widely used in problems of synthesis, extraction and separation. One of the most important mechanisms at play in such processes is the acoustic cavitation due to the non-uniform distribution of acoustic pressure in the chamber.Cavitation has a strong impact on the surface degradation mechanisms. In this work,a numerical calculation of the acoustic pressure distribution inside the reactor chamber was performed using COMSOL Multiphysics. The numerical results have revealed the dependence of the structure of the acoustic pressure field on the boundary conditions for various thicknesses of the piezoelectric transducer. In particular, the amplitude of the acoustic pressure is minimal in the case of absorbing boundaries, and the attenuation becomes more significant as the thickness of the piezoelectric transducer increases. In addition, reflective boundaries play a significant role in the formation and distribution of zones of maximum cavitation activity. 展开更多

Almost all sandstone reservoirs contain interlayers. The identification and characterization of these interlayers iscritical for minimizing the uncertainty associated with oilfield development and improving oil and gas recovery.Identifying interlayers outside wells using identification methods based on logging data and machine learning isdifficult and seismic-based identification techniques are expensive. Herein, a numerical model based on seepageand well-testing theories is introduced to identify interlayers using transient pressure data. The proposed modelrelies on the open-source MATLAB Reservoir Simulation Toolbox. The effects of the interlayer thickness, position, and width on the pressure response are thoroughly investigated. A procedure for inverting interlayer parametersin the reservoir using the bottom-hole pressure is also proposed. This method uses only transient pressuredata during well testing and can effectively identify the interlayer distribution near the wellbore at an extremelylow cost. The reliability of the model is verified using effective oilfield examples. 展开更多

A numerical study has been conducted to simulate the liquid/gas interface(meniscus) behaviors and capillary pressures in various capillary channels using the volume of fluid(VOF) method. Calculations are performed for four channels whose cross-sectional shapes are circle, regular hexagon, square and equilateral triangle and for four solid/liquid contact angles of 30°, 60°, 120° and 150°. No calculation is needed for the contact angle of 90° because the liquid/gas interface in this case can be thought to be a plane surface. In the calculations, the liquid/gas interface in each channel is assumed to have a flat surface at the initial time, it changes towards its due shape thereafter, which is induced by the combined action of the surface tension and contact angle. After experiencing a period of damped oscillation, it stabilizes at a certain geometry. The interface dynamics and capillary pressures are compared among different channels under three categories including the equal inscribed circle radius, equal area, and equal circumscribed circle radius. The capillary pressure in the circular channel obtained from the simulation agrees well with that given by the Young–Laplace equation, supporting the reliability of the numerical model. The channels with equal inscribed circle radius yield the closest capillary pressures, while those with equal circumscribed circle radius give the most scattered capillary pressures, with those with equal area living in between. A correlation is developed to calculate the equivalent radius of a polygonal channel, which can be used to compute the capillary pressure in such a channel by combination with the Young–Laplace equation. 展开更多
