Following the pilot reform by colleges and universities in Beijing, some colleges and universities in Shanghai will also initiate college English teaching reform program this fall. According to SCETFR (Shanghai College English Teaching Frame of Reference), the core of the new round of reform is to replace the traditional integral or comprehensive English with academic English, and through which to strive to improve students' English language ability in academic study and profession, and help them build a strong competence in international exchanges and competitions. The aim of this study is to conduct the validity analysis of the test paper of the academic English reading and writing course referring to the freshmen of non-English majors in a university of Technology in Shanghai....The aim of this study is to conduct the validity analysis of the test paper of the academic English reading and writing course referring to the freshmen of non-English majors in a university of Technology in Shanghai.The validity is mainly analyzed from these three aspects:the content and construct validity,the reaction process,and the internal structure of the test paper.And the principles of language assessment in the design of the test paper are given in this study.The validity study was also conducted in a class with 42 freshmen,and the scores of them were analyzed through the internal correlation coefficient from Statistic Package for Social Science(SPSS)25.0.Finally,the validity of the test paper is concluded.展开更多

With increasing academic exchanges and more frequent contact with foreign researchers,more and more postgraduate students are invited to attend international academic meetings,study aboard and participate in academic ...With increasing academic exchanges and more frequent contact with foreign researchers,more and more postgraduate students are invited to attend international academic meetings,study aboard and participate in academic lectures.However,academic English speaking course set up by many universities fail to improve postgraduate students’academic communication abilities and meet their needs.The research purpose of this paper is to do a need analysis of current academic English speaking courses for non-English major postgraduates.The research methodology includes literature and questionnaire.The questionnaire is designed based on Dudley-Evans and St John's Model.It aims to investigate current situation of academic speaking course and carry out a need analysis of postgraduate students.The results show that non-English major postgraduates have strong needs of academic English speaking.While,English speaking course could not meet the requirement of most postgraduate students.After completing all these courses,their oral academic competences are still beyond the expectations of their supervisors or international academic standard for normal presentation and communication in conference,seminar,lectures etc.展开更多
While academic resilience has been a hot topic in positive psychology,there is still scope for researchers to explore it in the field of applied linguistics.Drawing on the framework of L2(second language) learners’ r...While academic resilience has been a hot topic in positive psychology,there is still scope for researchers to explore it in the field of applied linguistics.Drawing on the framework of L2(second language) learners’ resilience proposed by T.Y.Kim and Y.K.Kim(2017),the current study aims to examine senior high school students’ English academic resilience(EAR) and its relationship to their English achievement(EA).This study comprises a survey of 454 senior high school students.Follow-up interviews were carried out to triangulate the quantitative findings.The descriptive results demonstrate that students’ EAR is above the average,and its five subscales obtain medium to medium-higher levels due to the mean scores.It shows that students have good EAR that enables them to deal with academic adversity.The correlational analysis shows a low positive correlation between EAR and EA in general,and the subscales share medium to low correlations with students’ EA.EAR has a certain influence on EA,but the correlation may be influenced by other learner variables.Based on the results,suggestions on improving students’ EAR are provided.展开更多

Finally it investigates some efficient class teaching strategies to promote their academic development, using class interventions such as the know-want-learn strategy (KWL), the object-explore-success-happy strategy (OESH), the cooperative project between students and teacher's strategy (CPST) and so on. Theoretically, the paper aims to place the SCT perspectives in the foreground. Important as it is, it is difficult for the English majors to choose the most appropriate topics with idea-invested thesis statements instead of some factual statements. Therefore, in order to make clear of the status quo and underlying obstacles of topic choosing, this paper is to study on 98 samples from China University of Political Science and Law's junior English majors. Both American and Chinese education can benefit from this special group of Chinese students if they can be better understood, and used as a bridge between China and U.
