The performance of structures with active variable stiffness (AVS) systems exhibits strong nonlinearity due to the variety with time of the stiffness of each storey unit,in which the AVS system is installed.Hence, the classical dynamic analysis method for linear structures, such as the mode-superposition method,is not applicable to structures with AVS systems. In this paper,an approximate analysis method is proposed for displacement responses of structures with AVS systems.Firstly,an equivalent relationship between single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) structures equipped with AVS systems and so-called fictitious linear structures is established. Then,an approximate mode-superposition (AMS) method is presented for multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) structures equipped with AVS systems. The accuracy of this method is investigated through extensive parametrical study using different types of earthquake excitations, and some modification is made to the method. Numerical calculation results indicate that the modified AMS method is effective for estimating the maximum displacements relative to the ground and the maximum interstorey drifts of MDOF structures equipped with AVS systems. 展开更多

In order to improve the harsh dynamic environment experienced by heavy rockets during different external excitations, this study presents a novel active variable stiffness vibration isolator(AVS-VI)used as the vibration isolation device to reduce excessive vibration of the whole-spacecraft isolation system. The AVS-VI is composed of horizontal stiffness spring, positive stiffness spring, parallelogram linkage mechanism, piezoelectric actuator, acceleration sensor, viscoelastic damping, and PID active controller.Based on the AVS-VI,the generalized vibration transmissibility determined by the nonlinear output frequency response functions and the energy absorption rate is applied to analyze the isolation performance of the whole-spacecraft system with AVS-VI.The AVS-VI can conduct adaptive vibration suppression with variable stiffness to the whole-spacecraft system, and the analysis results indicate that the AVS-VI is efTective in reducing the extravagant vibration of the whole-spacecraft system, where the vibration isolation is decreased up to above 65%under different acceleration excitations. Finally, different parameters of AVS-VI are considered to optimize the whole-spacecraft system based on the generalized vibration transmissibility and the energy absorption rate. 展开更多

An NUV-optical diagram composed from sources from the second Galaxy Evolution Explorer(GALEX) Ultraviolet Variability(GUVV-2) Catalog provides us with a method to tentatively classify the unknown GUVV-2 sources by their NUV-optical magnitudes. For the purpose of testing the correctness and generality of the method,we carry out a program on the spectroscopic observations of the unidentified GUVV-2 sources. The spectroscopic identification of these 37 sources are 19 type-A to-F stars,10 type-G to-K stars and 7 M dwarf stars together with an AGN.We also present the light curves in the R-band for two RR Lyrae star candidates selected from the NUV-optical diagram, both of which undergo cyclic variations.Combining their light curves and colors,we classify them as RR Lyrae stars. To confirm the re-sults,we show a color-color diagram for the 37 newly identified spectroscopic objects compared with previously identified ones, which are consistent with our previous re-sults,indicating that the ultraviolet variable sources can initially be classified by their NUV/optical color-color diagram. 展开更多

The determination of critical conditions for thermal ignition of combustible materials has been traditionally studied by the use of one overall reaction with bounded parameter values for the activation energy and other chemical constants, Significant errors can occur in the values of the threshold parameters for ignition when there are two (or more) simultaneous reactions present with distinct values of the chemical constants. Recent work with simultaneous parallel reactions showed the thresholds for ignition could be lowered in this case. In this paper, motivated by experimental results for forest litter and coal, it is shown that for sequential reactions (different values of parameters in different temperature ranges) that the threshold conditions are changed (safer for lower ambient temperatures and less safe for higher ambient temperatures). The mathematical analysis is summarised and a detailed analysis is given for the forest litter and crushed coal applications. The experimental results show that variable activation energy does occur and that this extension of the classical Frank-Kamenetskii theory is needed. Here the analysis is confined to the slab geometry only but the ideas developed can easily be extended to more general systems, including those involving mass transport, consumption, and phase changes. 展开更多

Over the past few decades, urban freeway congestion has been highly recognized as a serious and worsening traffic problem in the world. To relieve freeway congestion, several active traffic and demand management (ATDM) methods have been developed. Among them, variable speed limit (VSL) aims at regulating freeway mainline flow upstream to meet existing capacity and to harmonize vehicle speed. However, congestion may still be inevitable even with VSL implemented due to extremely high demand in actual practice. This study modified an existing VSL strategy by adding a new local constraint to suggest an achievable speed limit during the control period. As a queue is a product of the congestion phenomenon in freeway, the incentives of a queue build-up in the applied coordinated VSL control situation were analyzed. Considering a congestion occurrence (a queue build-up) characterized by a sudden and sharp speed drop, speed contours were utilized to demonstrate the congestion distribution over a whole freeway network in various sce- narios. Finally, congestion distributions found in both VSL control and non-VS control situations for various scenarios were investigated to explore the impact of the applied coordinated VSL control on the congestion distribution. An authentic stretch of V^hitemud Drive (I~~ID), an urban freeway corridor in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, was employed to implement this modified coordinated VSL control strategy; and a calibrated micro-simu- lation VISSIM model (model functions) was applied as the substitute of the real-world traffic system to test the above mentioned performance. The exploration task in this study can lay the groundwork for future research on how to improve the presented VSL control strategy for achieving the congestion mitigation effect on freeway. 展开更多
