Additive Runge-Kutta methods designed for preserving highly accurate solutions in mixed-precision computation were previously proposed and analyzed. These specially designed methods use reduced precision for the implicit computations and full precision for the explicit computations. In this work,we analyze the stability properties of these methods and their sensitivity to the low-precision rounding errors, and demonstrate their performance in terms of accuracy and efficiency. We develop codes in FORTRAN and Julia to solve nonlinear systems of ODEs and PDEs using the mixed-precision additive Runge-Kutta(MP-ARK)methods.The convergence, accuracy, and runtime of these methods are explored. We show that for a given level of accuracy, suitably chosen MP-ARK methods may provide significant reductions in runtime. 展开更多

This paper provides a study on the stability and time-step constraints of solving the linearized Korteweg-de Vries(KdV)equation, using implicit-explicit(IMEX)Runge-Kutta(RK)time integration methods combined with either finite difference(FD)or local discontinuous Galerkin(DG)spatial discretization. We analyze the stability of the fully discrete scheme,on a uniform mesh with periodic boundary conditions, using the Fourier method. For the linearized KdV equation, the IMEX schemes are stable under the standard Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy(CFL)conditionτ≤λh.Here,λis the CFL number,τis the time-step size, and h is the spatial mesh size.We study several IMEX schemes and characterize their CFL number as a function ofθ=d/h^(2)with d being the dispersion coefficient, which leads to several interesting observations. We also investigate the asymptotic behaviors of the CFL number for sufficiently refined meshes and derive the necessary conditions for the asymptotic stability of the IMEX-RK methods. Some numerical experiments are provided in the paper to illustrate the performance of IMEX methods under different time-step constraints. 展开更多

This paper is aimed at solving the nonlinear time-fractional partial differential equation with two small parameters arising from option pricing model in financial economics. The traditional reproducing kernel(RK)method which deals with this problem is very troublesome. This paper proposes a new method by adaptive multi-step piecewise interpolation reproducing kernel(AMPIRK)method for the first time. This method has three obvious advantages which are as follows.Firstly, the piecewise number is reduced.Secondly, the calculation accuracy is improved. Finally, the waste time caused by too many fragments is avoided. Then four numerical examples show that this new method has a higher precision and it is a more timesaving numerical method than the others. The research in this paper provides a powerful mathematical tool for solving time-fractional option pricing model which will play an important role in financial economics. 展开更多

The harmonic balance method(HBM)is one of the most widely used methods in solving nonlinear vibration problems, and its accuracy and computational efficiency largely depend on the number of the harmonics selected. The adaptive harmonic balance(AHB)method is an improved HBM method. This paper presents a modified AHB method with the asymptotic harmonic selection(AHS)procedure. This new harmonic selection procedure selects harmonics from the frequency spectra of nonlinear terms instead of estimating the contribution of each harmonic to the whole nonlinear response,by which the additional calculation is avoided.A modified continuation method is proposed to deal with the variable size of nonlinear algebraic equations at different values of path parameters, and then all solution branches of the amplitude-frequency response are obtained.Numerical experiments are carried out to verify the performance of the AHB-AHS method.Five typical nonlinear dynamic equations with different types of nonlinearities and excitations are chosen as the illustrative examples.Compared with the classical HBM and Runge-Kutta methods, the proposed AHB-AHS method is of higher accuracy and better convergence. The AHB-AHS method proposed in this paper has the potential to investigate the nonlinear vibrations of complex high-dimensional nonlinear systems. 展开更多

We extend two adaptive step-size methods for solving two-dimensional or multi-dimensional generalized nonlinear Schr ¨odinger equation(GNLSE): one is the conservation quantity error adaptive step-control method(RK4IP-CQE), and the other is the local error adaptive step-control method(RK4IP-LEM). The methods are developed in the vector form of fourthorder Runge–Kutta iterative scheme in the interaction picture by converting a vector equation in frequency domain. By simulating the supercontinuum generated from the high birefringence photonic crystal fiber, the calculation accuracies and the efficiencies of the two adaptive step-size methods are discussed. The simulation results show that the two methods have the same global average error, while RK4IP-LEM spends more time than RK4IP-CQE. The decrease of huge calculation time is due to the differences in the convergences of the relative photon number error and the approximated local error between these two adaptive step-size algorithms. 展开更多

With the rapid development of DNA technologies, high throughput genomic data have become a powerful leverage to locate desirable genetic loci associated with traits of importance in various crop species. However, current genetic association mapping analyses are focused on identifying individual QTLs. This study aimed to identify a set of QTLs or genetic markers, which can capture genetic variability for marker-assisted selection. Selecting a set with k loci that can maximize genetic variation out of high throughput genomic data is a challenging issue. In this study, we proposed an adaptive sequential replacement (ASR) method, which is considered a variant of the sequential replacement (SR) method. Through Monte Carlo simulation and comparing with four other selection methods: exhaustive, SR method, forward, and backward methods we found that the ASR method sustains consistent and repeatable results comparable to the exhaustive method with much reduced computational intensity. 展开更多

In an autonomous droop-based microgrid, the sys-tem voltage and frequency(VaF)are subject to deviations as load changes.Despite the existence of various control methods aimed at correcting system frequency deviations at the second-ary control level without any communication network, the chal-lenges associated with these methods and their abilities to simul-taneously restore microgrid VaF have not been fully investigat-ed.In this paper,a multi-input multi-output(MIMO)model ref-erence adaptive controller(MRAC)is proposed to achieve VaF restoration while accurate power sharing among distributed generators(DGs)is maintained. The proposed MRAC,without any communication network,is designed based on two meth-ods:droop-based and inertia-based methods. For the microgrid, the suggested design procedure is started by defining a model reference in which the control objectives, such as the desired settling time, the maximum tolerable overshoot, and steady-state error, are considered. Then,a feedback-feedforward con-troller is established,of which the gains are adaptively tuned by some rules derived from the Lyapunov stability theory.Through some simulations in MATLAB/SimPowerSystem Tool-box,the proposed MRAC demonstrates satisfactory perfor-mance. 展开更多

We propose a symplectic partitioned Runge-Kutta (SPRK) method with eighth-order spatial accuracy based on the extended Hamiltonian system of the acoustic waveequation. Known as the eighth-order NSPRK method, this technique uses an eighth-orderaccurate nearly analytic discrete (NAD) operator to discretize high-order spatial differentialoperators and employs a second-order SPRK method to discretize temporal derivatives. The stability criteria and numerical dispersion relations of the eighth-order NSPRK methodare given by a semi-analytical method and are tested by numerical experiments. We alsoshow the differences of the numerical dispersions between the eighth-order NSPRK methodand conventional numerical methods such as the fourth-order NSPRK method, the eighth-order Lax-Wendroff correction (LWC) method and the eighth-order staggered-grid (SG)method. The result shows that the ability of the eighth-order NSPRK method to suppress thenumerical dispersion is obviously superior to that of the conventional numerical methods. Inthe same computational environment, to eliminate visible numerical dispersions, the eighth-order NSPRK is approximately 2.5 times faster than the fourth-order NSPRK and 3.4 timesfaster than the fourth-order SPRK, and the memory requirement is only approximately47.17% of the fourth-order NSPRK method and 49.41% of the fourth-order SPRK method, which indicates the highest computational efficiency. Modeling examples for the two-layermodels such as the heterogeneous and Marmousi models show that the wavefields generatedby the eighth-order NSPRK method are very clear with no visible numerical dispersion. These numerical experiments illustrate that the eighth-order NSPRK method can effectivelysuppress numerical dispersion when coarse grids are adopted. Therefore, this methodcan greatly decrease computer memory requirement and accelerate the forward modelingproductivity. In general, the eighth-order NSPRK method has tremendous potential value forseismic exploration and seismology research. 展开更多

A mathematical model combined projection algorithm with phase-field method was applied. The adaptive finite element method was adopted to solve the model based on the non-uniform grid, and the behavior of dendritic growth was simulated from undercooled nickel melt under the forced flow. The simulation results show that the asymmetry behavior of the dendritic growth is caused by the forced flow. When the flow velocity is less than the critical value, the asymmetry of dendrite is little influenced by the forced flow. Once the flow velocity reaches or exceeds the critical value, the controlling factor of dendrite growth gradually changes from thermal diffusion to convection. With the increase of the flow velocity, the deflection angle towards upstream direction of the primary dendrite stem becomes larger. The effect of the dendrite growth on the flow field of the melt is apparent. With the increase of the dendrite size, the vortex is present in the downstream regions, and the vortex region is gradually enlarged. Dendrite tips appear to remelt. In addition, the adaptive finite element method can reduce CPU running time by one order of magnitude compared with uniform grid method, and the speed-up ratio is proportional to the size of computational domain. 展开更多

On the basis ofa 2D 4-node Mindlin shell element method, a novel self-adapting delamination finite element method is presented, which is developed to model the delamination damage of composite laminates. In the method, the sublaminate elements are generated automatically when the delamination damage occurs or extends. Thus, the complex process and state of delamination damage can be simulated practically with high efficiency for both analysis and modeling. Based on the self-adapting delamination method, linear dynamic finite element damage analysis is performed to simulate the low-velocity impact damage process of three types of mixed woven composite laminates. Taking the frictional force among sublaminations during delaminating and the transverse normal stress into account, the analytical results are consistent with those of the experimental data. 展开更多

The Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin finite element method (RK-DGFEM) is introduced to solve the classical resonator problem in the time domain. DGFEM uses unstructured grid discretization in the space domain and it is explicit in the time domain. Consequently it is a best mixture of FEM and finite volume method (FVM). RK-DGFEM can obtain local high-order accuracy by using high-order polynomial basis. Numerical experiments of transverse magnetic (TM) wave propagation in a 2-D resonator are performed. A high-order Lagrange polynomial basis is adopted. Numerical results agree well with analytical solution. And different order Lagrange interpolation polynomial basis impacts on simulation result accuracy are discussed. Computational results indicate that the accuracy is evidently improved when the order of interpolation basis is increased. Finally, L^2 errors of different order polynomial basis in RK-DGFEM are presented. Computational results show that L^2 error declines exponentially as the order of basis increases. 展开更多

High fidelity analysis models, which are beneficial to improving the design quality, have been more and more widely utilized in the modern engineering design optimization problems. However, the high fidelity analysis models are so computationally expensive that the time required in design optimization is usually unacceptable. In order to improve the efficiency of optimization involving high fidelity analysis models, the optimization efficiency can be upgraded through applying surrogates to approximate the computationally expensive models, which can greately reduce the computation time.An efficient heuristic global optimization method using adaptive radial basis function(RBF) based on fuzzy clustering(ARFC) is proposed. In this method,a novel algorithm of maximin Latin hypercube design using successive local enumeration(SLE) is employed to obtain sample points with good performance in both space-filling and projective uniformity properties, which does a great deal of good to metamodels accuracy.RBF method is adopted for constructing the metamodels, and with the increasing the number of sample points the approximation accuracy of RBF is gradually enhanced. The fuzzy c-means clustering method is applied to identify the reduced attractive regions in the original design space. The numerical benchmark examples are used for validating the performance of ARFC.The results demonstrates that for most application examples the global optima are effectively obtained and comparison with adaptive response surface method(ARSM) proves that the proposed method can intuitively capture promising design regions and can efficiently identify the global or near-global design optimum. This method improves the efficiency and global convergence of the optimization problems, and gives a new optimization strategy for engineering design optimization problems involving computationally expensive models. 展开更多

An automatically adaptive element free method is presented to analyze the seismic response of liquefiable soils. The method is based on the element free Galerkin method (EFGM) and the fission procedure that is part of h-refinement, indicated by error estimation. In the proposed method, a posteriori error estimate procedure that depends on the energy norm of stress and the T-Belytschko (TB) stress recovery scheme is incorporated. The effective cyclic elasto-plastic constitutive model is used to describe the nonlinear behavior of the saturated soil. The governing equations are established by u-p formulation. The proposed method can effectively avoid the volumetric locking due to large deformation that usually occurs in numerical computations using the finite element method (FEM). The efficiency of the proposed method is demonstrated by evaluating the seismic response of an embankment and comparing it to results obtained through FEM. It is shown that the proposed method provides an accurate seismic analysis of saturated soil that includes the effects of liquefaction . 展开更多

Based on the fact that 3-D model discretization by artificial could not always be successfully implemented especially for large-scaled problems when high accuracy and efficiency were required, a new adaptive multigrid finite element method was proposed. In this algorithm, a-posteriori error estimator was employed to generate adaptively refined mesh on a given initial mesh. On these iterative meshes, V-cycle based multigrid method was adopted to fast solve each linear equation with each initial iterative term interpolated from last mesh. With this error estimator, the unknowns were nearly optimally distributed on the final mesh which guaranteed the accuracy. The numerical results show that the multigrid solver is faster and more stable compared with ICCG solver. Meanwhile, the numerical results obtained from the final model discretization approximate the analytical solutions with maximal relative errors less than 1%, which remarkably validates this algorithm. 展开更多
