It employs the SP (state preference) technique and logit modeling to investigate the impact of route development via neighboring countries in the region. With the Japanese government pursuing an increase in international routes at Haneda International Airport, and the Chinese government planning to construct Beijing Capital Second International Airport by 2019, the competition among airports to serve as hubs in Northeast Asia will increase significantly. Korean passengers will have a greater number of route choices when traveling to North America or Europe, utilizing not only direct flights from Incheon International Airport but also flights via Tokyo or Beijing area airports including Haneda International Airport, Narita International Airport, Beijing Capital International Airport and Beijing Capital Second International Airport. Accordingly, passengers will choose among the alternatives by considering fares and flight times. As such, it is essential for airports to offer flights with competitive prices for transit passengers to become successful competitive airports in the region. Foundation settlement is of great significance for high-fill engineering in collapsible loess areas.To predict the construction settlement of Lüliang Airport located in Shanxi Province,China,a plane strain finite...Foundation settlement is of great significance for high-fill engineering in collapsible loess areas.To predict the construction settlement of Lüliang Airport located in Shanxi Province,China,a plane strain finite element method considering the linear variation in the modulus,was carried out in this paper based on the results of geotechnical tests.The stress and deformation of four typical sections caused by layered fill are simulated,and then the settlement of the high-fill airport is calculated and analyzed by inputting three sets of parameters.The relative soft parameters of loess geomaterials produce more settlement than the relatively hard parameters.The thicker the filling body is,the greater the settlement is.The filling body constrained by mountains on both sides produces less settlement than the filling body constrained by a mountain on only one side even the filling thickness is almost the same.The settlement caused by the original subbase accounts for 56%−77%of the total settlement,while the fill soils themselves accounts for 23%−44%of the total settlement,which is approximately consistent with the field monitoring results.It provides a good reference for predicting the settlement of similar high-fill engineering.展开更多
The purpose of Federal Aviation Regulations Part 77, entitled "Objects Affecting Navigable Airspace", is to identify potential hazards and prevent adverse impacts to the safe and efficient use of navigable airspace....The purpose of Federal Aviation Regulations Part 77, entitled "Objects Affecting Navigable Airspace", is to identify potential hazards and prevent adverse impacts to the safe and efficient use of navigable airspace. The OIS (obstruction identification surfaces) represent these regulations, identify objects that penetrate these imaginary surfaces, evaluate hazardous effects, and ensure safe separations of aircraft from obstructions. The OIS evaluation is often used for selecting airfield locations and runway orientations. More importantly, the OIS evaluation is an airport's safeguard against flawed urban development, especially for airports near rapidly expanding cities. Without accurate analysis tools, hand-calculation errors on the OIS can occur and cause adverse impacts to airport safety. Applying the GIS (geographic information system) features of geospatial data and 3D formats, this paper proposes a model named GIS Obstruction Model which is capable of precisely calculating maximum allowable heights and creating visual imagery of penetrating obstructions. The special features of the model include web-based design, adaptability to any airport, user-friendly multiple inquiry methods, quick response to online inquiries, and response with 3D visual reality. The proposed G1S Obstruction Model is useful for airport planning, architecture design, safety management or civil engineering permit review.展开更多

Air transport network, or airport network, is a complex network involving numerous airports. Effective management of the air transport system requires an in-depth understanding of the roles of airports in the network....Air transport network, or airport network, is a complex network involving numerous airports. Effective management of the air transport system requires an in-depth understanding of the roles of airports in the network. Whereas knowledge on air transport network properties has been improved greatly, methods to find critical airports in the network are still lacking. In this paper, we present methods to investigate network properties and to identify critical airports in the network. A novel network model is proposed with airports as nodes and the correlations between traffic flow of airports as edges. Spectral clustering algorithm is developed to classify air- ports. Spatial distribution characteristics and intraclass correlation of different categories of air- ports are carefully analyzed. The analyses based on the fluctuation trend of distance-correlation and power spectrum of time series are performed to examine the self-organized criticality of the net- work. The results indicate that there is one category of airports which dominates the self-organized critical state of the network. Six airports in this category are found to be the most important ones in the Chinese air transport network. The flights delay occurred in these six airports can propagate to the other airports, having huge impact on the operation characteristics of the entire network. The methods proposed here taking traffic dynamics into account are capable of identifying critical air- ports in the whole air transport network.展开更多
Analyzing airports' role in global air transportation and monitoring their development over time provides an additional perspective on the dynamics of network evolution.In order to understand the different roles airp...Analyzing airports' role in global air transportation and monitoring their development over time provides an additional perspective on the dynamics of network evolution.In order to understand the different roles airports can play in the network an integrated and multidimensional approach is needed.Therefore,an approach to airport classification through hierarchical clustering considering several parameters from network theory is presented in this paper.By applying a 29 year record of global flight data and calculating the conditional transition probabilities the results are displayed as an evolution graph similar to a discrete-time Markov chain.With this analytical concept the meaning of airports is analyzed from a network perspective and a new airport taxonomy is established.The presented methodology allows tracking the development of airports from certain categories into others over time.Results show that airports of equal classes run through similar stages of development with a limited number of alternatives,indicating clear evolutionary patterns.Apart from giving an overview of the results the paper illustrates the exact data-driven approach and suggests an evaluation scheme.The methodology can help the public and industry sector to make informed strategy decisions when it comes to air transportation infrastructure.展开更多
Understanding ecosystems within and around airports can help to determine the causes and possible mitigation measures for collisions between aircraft and wildlife.Small mammal communities are an important component of...Understanding ecosystems within and around airports can help to determine the causes and possible mitigation measures for collisions between aircraft and wildlife.Small mammal communities are an important component of the semi-arid savanna ecosystems of Namibia,its productivity and its ecosystem integrity.They are also a major direct attractant for raptors at airports.The present study compared the abundance and diversity of small mammals between Namibia’s 2 main airport properties(Hosea Kutako International Airport and Eros Airport),and among areas of land used for various purposes surrounding the airports.A total of 2150 small mammals(3 orders,11 species)were captured over 4 trapping seasons.Small mammal abundance was significantly higher at the end of the growing season than during the non-growing season.The grass mowing regimen in current management plans at the airports resulted in a significant reduction of small mammal abundance at Hosea Kutako during the non-growing season only,thus indicating that annual mowing is effective but insufficient to reduce the overall abundance of mammal prey species for raptors.Small mammal numbers were significantly higher at Hosea Kutako Airport compared to the cattle and game farming land surrounding the airport,while no differences in small mammal densities or diversity were found for areas with different land uses at and surrounding Eros.The study suggests that the fence around Hosea Kutako provides a refuge for small mammals,resulting in higher densities.It also indicates that different surrounding land use practices result in altered ecosystem function and productivity,an important consideration when identifying wildlife attractants at airports.展开更多
