Pattern Matching of Industrial Alarm Floods Using Word Embedding and Dynamic Time Warping

Dear Editor,This letter proposes a new pattern matching method based on word embedding and dynamic time warping(DTW)to identify groups of similar alarm floods.First,alarm messages are transformed into numeric values that represent alarms and also reflect the relationships between alarm occurrences.Then,similarities between numerically encoded alarm flood sequences are calculated by DTW and groups of similar floods are identified via clustering.The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by a case study with alarm&event data obtained from a public industrial simulation model.

Fire-Detectors Review and Design of an Automated, Quick Responsive Fire-Alarm System Based on SMS

In this work a review of existing fire-detector types has been carried out along with the development of a low cost, portable, and reliable microcontroller based automated fire alarm system for remotely alerting any fire incidents in household or industrial premises. The aim of the system designed is to alert the distant property-owner efficiently and quickly by sending short message (SMS) via GSM network. A Linear integrated temperature sensor detects temperature beyond preset value whereas semiconductor type sensor detects presence of smoke or gas from fire hazards. The sensor units are connected via common data line to ATMega8L AVR microcontroller. A SIM300CZ GSM kit based network module, capable of operating in standard GSM bands, has been used to send alert messages. The system is implemented on printed circuit board (PCB) and tested under different experimental conditions to evaluate its performances.

Enhancing Feature Discretization in Alarm and Fire Detection Systems Using Probabilistic Inference Models

Sensors for fire alarms require a high level of predictive variables to ensure accurate detection, injury prevention, and loss prevention. Bayesian networks can aid in enhancing early fire detection capabilities and reducing the frequency of erroneous fire alerts, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of numerous safety monitoring systems. This research explores the development of optimized probabilistic graphic models for the discretization thresholds of alarm system predictor variables. The study presents a statistical model framework that increases the efficacy of fire detection by predicting the discretization thresholds of alarm system predictor variable fluctuations used to detect the onset of fire. The work applies the Bayesian networks and probabilistic visual models to reveal the specific characteristics required to cope with fire detection strategies and patterns. The adopted methodology utilizes a combination of prior knowledge and statistical data to draw conclusions from observations. Utilizing domain knowledge to compute conditional dependencies between network variables enabled predictions to be made through the application of specialized analytical and simulation techniques.

Sounding the alarm:Functionally referential signaling in Azure-winged Magpie

Functionally referential signals are a complex form of communication that conveys information about the external environment.Such signals have been found in a range of mammal and bird species and have helped us understand the complexities of animal communication.Corvids are well known for their extraordinary cognitive abilities,but relatively little attention has been paid to their vocal function.Here,we investigated the functionally referential signals of a cooperatively breeding corvid species,Azure-winged Magpie(Cyanopica cyanus).Through field observations,we suggest that Azure-winged Magpie uses referential alarm calls to distinguish two types of threats:’rasp’ calls for terrestrial threats and ’chatter’ calls for aerial threats.A playback experiment revealed that Azure-winged Magpies responded to the two call types with qualitatively different behaviors.They sought cover by flying into the bushes in response to the ’chatter’ calls,and flew to or stayed at higher positions in response to ’rasp’ calls,displaying a shorter response time to ’chatter’ calls.Significant differences in acoustic structure were found between the two types of calls.Given the extensive cognitive abilities of corvids and the fact that referential signals were once thought to be unique to primates,these findings are important for expanding our understanding of social communication and language evolution.

Predictive value of alarm features in diagnosing upper gastrointestinal malignancies among dyspeptic patients:A cross-sectional study in Ethiopia

Objective:The study aimed to determine the overall predictive value of alarm features in diagnosing upper Gastrointestinal(GI)malignancies and significant endoscopic findings among patients undergoing elective Esophagogastroduodenoscopy(EGD)at Tikur Anbessa Special Hospital(TASH)and Adera Medical Centre(AMC).Methods:It was an institution-based cross-sectional study conducted on patients undergoing elective endoscopy for an upper GI complaint from July to September 2022.Data was collected from patient charts,and biopsies were taken for histologic confirmation.The study assessed the association of alarm symptoms and signs with significant upper gastrointestinal(UGI)endoscopic findings and malignancies.Results:142 patients were selected,with an average age of 48.35 and 52.1% being male.Epigastric pain was the most common reason for an endoscopy.62% of patients had at least one alarm feature,the most common being unexplained weight loss and UGI bleeding.The study found a strong association between the presence of alarm features,significant endoscopic findings,and UGI malignancies.The pooled sensitivity and specificity of any alarm feature for any significant finding were 79% and 64.9%,respectively,and for malignancy,100% and 39.7%,respectively.The presence of the alarm feature was associated with an increase of 6.801 in the odds of developing SEF and an increase of 4.199 in the odds of developing malignancy.Conclusions:UGI alarm symptoms and signs like an abdominal mass,persistent vomiting,dysphagia,and UGI bleeding are predictive of significant endoscopic findings and malignancies.Hence,EGD should be done and suspicious lesions should be biopsied early,regardless of gender,age,or duration of symptoms.

Adaptive detection of range-spread targets in homogeneous and partially homogeneous clutter plus subspace interference

Adaptive detection of range-spread targets is considered in the presence of subspace interference plus Gaussian clutter with unknown covariance matrix.The target signal and interference are supposed to lie in two linearly independent subspaces with deterministic but unknown coordinates.Relying on the two-step criteria,two adaptive detectors based on Gradient tests are proposed,in homogeneous and partially homogeneous clutter plus subspace interference,respectively.Both of the proposed detectors exhibit theoretically constant false alarm rate property against unknown clutter covariance matrix as well as the power level.Numerical results show that,the proposed detectors have better performance than their existing counterparts,especially for mismatches in the signal steering vectors.

Six measuring equipments have being successfully applied at production lines of 241Am fire alarm source and factories of automatic smoke-sensitive fire alarm making.

Function of note strings in Japanese Tit alarm calls to the Common Cuckoo:a playback experiment

Background: Birds produce alarm calls to convey information about threats. Some Passerine alarm calls consist of several note strings, but few studies have examined their function. Previous studies have shown that Japanese Tits(Parus minor) can alter the calling rate and number and combination of notes in response to predators. We previously found the combinations of note types in Japanese Tit alarm calls to be significantly different in response to the Sparrowhawk(Accipiter nisus) and Common Cuckoo(Cuculus canorus).Methods: Through playback experiments, we tested whether the note strings in Japanese Tit alarm calls to the Common Cuckoo have different functions in conveying information. The note strings of selected alarm calls were divided into the categories of C and D, and different calls were then constructed separately based on the two note string categories. Original alarm calls(C–D), C calls and D calls were played back to male Japanese Tits during the incubation period.Results: Male Japanese Tits had a significantly stronger response to C calls than to C–D calls, and they showed a significantly stronger response to both C and C–D calls than to D calls, suggesting that Japanese Tits discriminated between the C and D calls.Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that the C-and D-category note strings of Japanese Tit alarm calls to the Common Cuckoo have different functions, which supports the previous finding that different note strings in an alarm call can provide different information to receivers. However, the exact meanings of these note strings are not yet known, and further investigation is therefore required.

Predictive value of alarm symptoms in patients with Rome IV dyspepsia: A cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND No studies have evaluated the predictive value of alarm symptoms for organic dyspepsia and organic upper gastrointestinal(GI)diseases based on Rome IV criteria in the Chinese population.AIM To evaluate the predictive value of alarm symptoms for dyspeptic patients based on Rome IV criteria.METHODS We performed a cross-sectional study of dyspepsia patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria at two academic urban tertiary-care centers from March 2018 to January 2019.Basic demographic data,dyspeptic information,alarm symptoms,lifestyle,examination results,family history and outpatient cost information were collected.Dyspepsia patients with normal findings on upper GI endoscopy,epigastric ultrasound and laboratory examination and without Helicobacter pylori-associated dyspepsia were classified as functional dyspepsia.RESULTS A total of 381 patients were enrolled in the study,including 266 functional dyspepsia patients and 115 organic dyspepsia patients.There were 24 patients with organic upper GI disease among patients with organic dyspepsia.We found that based on the Rome IV criteria,alarm symptoms were of limited value in differentiating organic dyspepsia and organic upper GI diseases from functional dyspepsia.Age(odds ratio(OR)=1.056,P=0.012),smoking(OR=4.714,P=0.006)and anemia(OR=88.270,P<0.001)were independent predictors for organic upper GI diseases.For the comparison of epigastric pain syndrome,postprandial distress syndrome and epigastric pain syndrome combined with postprandial distress syndrome,the results showed that there were statistically significant differences in anorexia(P=0.021)and previous visits(P=0.012).The ClinicalTrials.gov number is NCT 03479528.CONCLUSION Most alarm symptoms had poor predictive value for organic dyspepsia and organic upper GI diseases based on Rome IV criteria.Gastroscopic screening should not be based solely on alarm symptoms.

Responses of cuckoo hosts to alarm signals of different nest intruders in non-nesting areas

DEAR EDITOR,The“call for help”hypothesis proposes that alarm calls produced by a bird can transmit warning information to both conspecific and interspecific neighbors.Neighbors who are attracted by social transmission might benefit from knowing about the presence of danger or by gaining information about the presence of predators or brood parasites nearby.Brood parasite hosts can distinguish threats from different intruders and exhibit varied responses correspondingly.

Performance of Order-statistics Constant-false-alarm-rate Detector with Noncoherent Integration and Its Application to OTH Radar

Noncoherent integration is often ed for approving performance in detection of radar signal. Order-statistics constant false alarm rate (OS-CFAR) detector has some advantages in clutter and multiple target situations. AnOS-CFAN detector with noncoherent integration after Square law envelope detector is presented and an analysis of detection performance for the chi-Square family of Swerling fluctuating targets is given. Its application to the high frequency(HF) ground wave over-the-horizon (OTH) radar is discussed as well.

Modeling Target Detection and Performance Analysis of Electronic Countermeasures for Phased Radar

Interference is a key factor in radar return misdetection.Strong interference might make it difficult to detect the signal or targets.When interference occurs in the sidelobes of the antenna pattern,Sidelobe Cancellation(SLC)and Sidelobe Blanking are two unique solutions to solve this problem(SLB).Aside from this approach,the probability of false alert and likelihood of detection are the most essential parameters in radar.The chance of a false alarm for any radar system should be minimal,and as a result,the probability of detection should be high.There are several interference cancellation strategies in the literature that are used to sustain consistent false alarms regardless of the clutter environment.With the necessity for interference cancellation methods and the constant false alarm rate(CFAR),the Maisel SLC algorithm has been modified to create a new algorithm for recognizing targets in the presence of severe interference.The received radar returns and interference are simulated as non-stationary in this approach,and side-lobe interference is cancelled using an adaptive algorithm.By comparing the performance of adaptive algorithms,simulation results are shown.In a severe clutter situation,the simulation results demonstrate a considerable increase in target recognition and signal to noise ratio when compared to the previous technique.

Predictive value of alarm symptoms in Rome IV irritable bowel syndrome:A multicenter cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND Irritable bowel syndrome(IBS)is a common functional bowel disease that shares features with many organic diseases and cannot be accurately diagnosed by symptom-based criteria.Alarm symptoms have long been applied in the clinical diagnosis of IBS.However,no study has explored the predictive value of alarm symptoms in suspected IBS patients based on the latest Rome IV criteria.AIM To investigate the predictive value of alarm symptoms in suspected IBS patients based on the Rome IV criteria.METHODS In this multicenter cross-sectional study,we collected data from 730 suspected IBS patients evaluated at 3 tertiary care centers from August 2018 to August 2019.Patients with IBS-like symptoms who completed colonoscopy during the study period were initially identified by investigators through medical records.Eligible patients completed questionnaires,underwent laboratory tests,and were assigned to the IBS or organic disease group according to colonoscopy findings and pathology results(if a biopsy was taken).Independent risk factors for organic disease were explored by logistic regression analysis,and the positive predictive value(PPV)and missed diagnosis rate were calculated.RESULTS The incidence of alarm symptoms in suspected IBS patients was 75.34%.Anemia[odds ratio(OR)=2.825,95%confidence interval(CI):1.273-6.267,P=0.011],fecal occult blood[OR=1.940(95%CI:1.041-3.613),P=0.037],unintended weight loss(P=0.009),female sex[OR=0.560(95%CI:0.330-0.949),P=0.031]and marital status(P=0.030)were independently correlated with organic disease.The prevalence of organic disease was 10.41%in suspected IBS patients.The PPV of alarm symptoms for organic disease was highest for anemia(22.92%),fecal occult blood(19.35%)and unintended weight loss(16.48%),and it was 100%when these three factors were combined.The PPV and missed diagnosis rate for diagnosing IBS were 91.67%and 74.77%when all alarm symptoms were combined with Rome IV and 92.09%and 34.10%when only fecal occult blood,unintended weight loss and anemia were combined with Rome IV,respectively.CONCLUSION Anemia,fecal occult blood and unintended weight loss have high predictive value for organic disease in suspected IBS patients and can help identify patients requiring further examination but are not recommended as exclusion criteria for IBS.

Analysis of the False Alarm Fault in Antenna-servo System of Weather Radar

A false alarm fault frequently appeared in antenna-servo system of the CINRAD/SA weather radar of Shanwei in the second half of 2011, so possible reasons for the false alarm fault were listed firstly using method of exhaustion, and then the main reason was determined using exclusive method. That is, the fault was closely related to the signal transmission channel from the antenna mount to servo system in RDA cabinet. After ex- amining questionable nodes in the transmission channels of the alarm signal, we found that the false alarm fault might result from the interference of a burr in the temperature sensing circuit of the elevation motor. In actual operation, a filter capacitor was connected with the corresponding pin in the upper optical board to screen the interference of a burr, thereby successfully eliminating the false alarm fault in antenna-servo system of the CIN- RAD/SA radar of Shanwei.

Design and Implementation of Environment Monitoring and Alarm System for Broiler Breeding Based on Internet of Things

Environment plays a vital role in the breeding process of broilers. In order to effectively monitor and control the breeding environment of broilers, a broiler breeding environment monitoring and alarm system based on internet of things is studied and established. The system adopts the narrow band internet of things communication technology, and can transmit the temperature, humidity, illumination and ammonia and other environ-mental data in the chicken house remotely through terminal collection unified interface device. Meantime, it realizes the control of fans, wet cur-tains, small windows and illumination in the chicken house by threshold method. The system software is designed and implemented by C#, SQL Server, WeX5 and other development tools, including platform terminal and enterprise terminal. Since its operation, the system is featured by stable state, reliable data and timely alarm, which solves the problem of unified control of different sensors and realizes the effective control of house envi-ronment.

Changing Places:On the Use of Utopia and the Role of a Place Alarm System

In the paper,the experience of contradictions and conflicts as a normal feature of social change and evolutionary trends,is discussed.Contradictions normally destabilize a system,causing dilemmas and conflicts.However,the paper warns against thinking of destabilization as dysfunctional,as complex systems require a high degree of instability to deal with changes in the environment.Dealing with instabilities requires systems,which can produce alarms that signal a need to regain additional options for development and introduce them into the planning process.The paper introduces the concept of a place alarm system,which uses visions and utopias in various forms for alarm purposes.To illustrate this kind of thinking,the paper first presents a model of an alarm system,which demonstrates how we can deal with contradictions by including the temporal dimension in our analyses of place systems and bring broader temporal horizons into consideration.As an example,contradictions increase when we consider the future from the perspective of the present;the present future multiplies contradictions.On the other hand,viewing the present from the future(future present),creates possibilities for goal-directed planning to avoid the problems,which have produced alarm signals.As the paper demonstrates,these two possibilities of what may be called reflexive and utopian temporal modalizations,are not given as alternatives,but mutually imply each other.The paper then presents two case illustrations,which demonstrate how to deal with conflict and contradictions to facilitate collective and goal-directed planning,using the alarm system framework.In both cases,we are witnessing place planning processes,which lack the necessary requisite variety(Ashby,1956)to deal effectively with the environmental complexity and internal conflicts facing the local communities.As indicated in the analyses,the present planning regimes do not promote variety and vitality regarding current place developments.

An Automatic Monitoring and Alarming Method for the Power Supply of Weather Radars

As weather radar stations require headroom environment to operate,they were mostly built on highlands which are usually unattended.The mains supply is relatively poor,and the risk of radar stoppages due to power outage is therefore ever-present.As such,the radar construction program is used to build a complementary security video monitoring system.By collecting monitoring images of the regulated power supply in real-time from power supply auto transfer systems in distribution rooms and radar transceiver rooms,using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient to analyse pixel variation trends,and supplementing statistical analysis of pixel characteristics difference to eliminate misjudgments resulting from low image contrast in special scenarios,a software can be developed through C#.It has the function of automatically monitoring mains supply and alerting staff on duty to handle the power outage in a timely manner via text message so that any potential risk is neutralised before it can cause damage.This monitoring and auto-alerting approach is generally applicable to unattended rooms with large amounts of electronical equipment.

Antipredatory call behavior of lapwing species in an Afrotropical environment

Predation is an important source of natural selection on prey species and has resulted in adaptations such as antipredator vocal signals,which can alert others to the presence of predators and solicit cooperative attack.Although vocal alarm signals of birds have been well studied,they are poorly known in tropical African species.To address this lack of information,the antipredatory signals and responses of two lapwings(Wattled Lapwing Vanellus senegallus and Spur-winged Lapwing Vanellus spinosus)to potential predators were investigated using data collected from focal observation,distance measurements,focal recordings,and playback experiment.The lapwing calls elicited to predators were classified as alarm or mobbing calls based on whether the calls elicited alert behavior or attack from other lapwings.Discriminant linear analysis(DLA)was used to compare the time and frequency parameters of the call types measured in Raven PRO.Also,lapwings’responses to intruders,alert and start distance,time of day,and latency,as well as the effects of flock size and distance to cover were examined.About 48%of all calls was correctly classified by DLA.The best predictors of call type for the lapwings were maximum frequency and high frequency.Both alarm and mobbing calls were elicited by African Wattled Lapwings to dogs and humans.Mobbing calls were elicited to intruders by the Spur-winged Lapwings.Alert distance was positively associated with start distance,and differed between morning and evening in both lapwings.With scarce information from tropical Africa,this study put in perspective vocal and antipredator behavior of lapwing species in Africa.
