A method which combines electronegativity difference,CALculation of PHAse Diagrams(CALPHAD) and machine learning has been proposed to efficiently screen the high yield strength regions in Co-Cr-Fe-Ni-Mo multi-component phase diagram.First, the single-phase region at a certain annealing temperature is obtained by combining CALPHAD method and machine learning,to avoid the formation of brittle phases. Then high yield strength points in the single-phase region are selected by electronegativity difference. The yield strength and plastic deformation behavior of the designed Co_(14)Cr_(30)Ni_(50)Mo_(6)alloy are measured to evaluate the proposed method. The validation experiments indicate this method is effective to predict high yield strength points in the whole compositional space.Meanwhile, the interactions between the high density of shear bands and dislocations contribute to the high ductility and good work hardening ability of Co_(14)Cr_(30)Ni_(50)Mo_(6)alloy.The method is helpful and instructive to property-oriented compositional design for multi-principal element alloys. 展开更多

This work studied the microstructure, mechanical properties and damping properties of Mg_(95.34)Ni_(2)Y_(2.66) and Mg_(95.34)Zn_(1)Ni_(1)Y_(2.66)alloys systematically. The difference in the evolution of the long-period stacked ordered(LPSO)phase in the two alloys during heat treatment was the focus. The morphology of the as-cast Mg_(95.34)Ni_(2)Y_(2.66)presented a disordered network. After heat treatment at 773 K for 2 hours, the eutectic phase was integrated into the matrix, and the LPSO phase maintained the 18R structure. As Zn partially replaced Ni,the crystal grains became rounded in the cast alloy, and lamellar LPSO phases and more solid solution atoms were contained in the matrix after heat treatment of the Mg_(95.34)Zn_(1)Ni_(1)Y_(2.66)alloy.Both Zn and the heat treatment had a significant effect on damping.Obvious dislocation internal friction peaks and grain boundary internal friction peaks were found after temperature-dependent damping of the Mg_(95.34)Ni_(2)Y_(2.66)and Mg_(95.34)Zn_(1)Ni_(1)Y_(2.66)alloys.After heat treatment, the dislocation peak was significantly increased, especially in the alloy Mg_(95.34)Ni_(2)Y_(2).66.The annealed Mg_(95.34)Ni_(2)Y_(2.66)alloy with a rod-shaped LPSO phase exhibited a good damping performance of 0.14 atε=10^(−3),which was due to the difference between the second phase and solid solution atom content. These factors also affected the dynamic modulus of the alloy. The results of this study will help in further development of high-damping magnesium alloys. 展开更多

Magnesium(Mg),being the lightest structural metal, holds immense potential for widespread applications in various fields. The development of high-performance and cost-effective Mg alloys is crucial to further advancing their commercial utilization. With the rapid advancement of machine learning(ML)technology in recent years,the“data-driven''approach for alloy design has provided new perspectives and opportunities for enhancing the performance of Mg alloys. This paper introduces a novel regression-based Bayesian optimization active learning model(RBOALM)for the development of high-performance Mg-Mn-based wrought alloys.RBOALM employs active learning to automatically explore optimal alloy compositions and process parameters within predefined ranges, facilitating the discovery of superior alloy combinations. This model further integrates pre-established regression models as surrogate functions in Bayesian optimization, significantly enhancing the precision of the design process.Leveraging RBOALM,several new high-performance alloys have been successfully designed and prepared.Notably, after mechanical property testing of the designed alloys, the Mg-2.1Zn-2.0Mn-0.5Sn-0.1Ca alloy demonstrates exceptional mechanical properties, including an ultimate tensile strength of 406 MPa,a yield strength of 287 MPa,and a 23%fracture elongation.Furthermore, the Mg-2.7Mn-0.5Al-0.1Ca alloy exhibits an ultimate tensile strength of 211 MPa,coupled with a remarkable 41%fracture elongation. 展开更多

Specific grades of high-entropy alloys(HEAs)can provide opportunities for optimizing properties toward high-temperature applications. In this work, the Co-based HEA with a chemical composition of Co_(47.5)Cr_(30)Fe_(7.5)Mn_(7.5)Ni_(7.5)(at%)was chosen. The refractory metallic elements hafnium(Hf)and molybdenum(Mo)were added in small amounts(1.5at%)because of their well-known positive effects on high-temperature properties.Inclusion characteristics were comprehensively explored by using a two-dimensional cross-sectional method and extracted by using a three-dimensional electrolytic extraction method. The results revealed that the addition of Hf can reduce Al_(2)O_(3)inclusions and lead to the formation of more stable Hf-rich inclusions as the main phase.Mo addition cannot influence the inclusion type but could influence the inclusion characteristics by affecting the physical parameters of the HEA melt. The calculated coagulation coefficient and collision rate of Al_(2)O_(3)inclusions were higher than those of HfO_(2)inclusions,but the inclusion amount played a larger role in the agglomeration behavior of HfO_(2)and Al_(2)O_(3)inclusions.The impurity level and active elements in HEAs were the crucial factors affecting inclusion formation. 展开更多

High-entropy alloys(HEAs),which were introduced as a pioneering concept in 2004,have captured the keen interest of nu-merous researchers.Entropy,in this context, can be perceived as representing disorder and randomness.By contrast, elemental composi-tions within alloy systems occupy specific structural sites in space,a concept referred to as structure. In accordance with Shannon entropy, structure is analogous to information.Generally, the arrangement of atoms within a material, termed its structure, plays a pivotal role in dictating its properties. In addition to expanding the array of options for alloy composites,HEAs afford ample opportunities for diverse structural designs. The profound influence of distinct structural features on the exceptional behaviors of alloys is underscored by numer-ous examples. These features include remarkably high fracture strength with excellent ductility, antiballistic capability, exceptional radi-ation resistance, and corrosion resistance. In this paper,we delve into various unique material structures and properties while elucidating the intricate relationship between structure and performance. 展开更多

With the increasing attention received by lightweight metals, numerous essential fields have increased requirements for mag-nesium(Mg)alloys with good room-temperature and high-temperature mechanical properties. However, the high-temperature mechanic-al properties of commonly used commercial Mg alloys, such as AZ91D,deteriorate considerably with increasing temperatures.Over the past several decades, extensive efforts have been devoted to developing heat-resistant Mg alloys. These approaches either inhibit the gen-eration of thermally unstable phases or promote the formation of thermally stable precipitates/phases in matrices through solid solution or precipitation strengthening. In this review, numerous studies are systematically introduced and discussed.Different alloy systems,includ-ing those based on Mg–Al,Mg–Zn,and Mg–rare earth, are carefully classified and compared to reveal their mechanical properties and strengthening mechanisms. The emphasis, limitations, and future prospects of these heat-resistant Mg alloys are also pointed out and dis-cussed to develop heat-resistant Mg alloys and broaden their potential application areas in the future. 展开更多

The stability of the microstructure and mechanical properties of the pre-hardened sheets during the pre-hardening forming(PHF)process directly determines the quality of the formed components. The microstructure stability of the pre-hardened sheets was in-vestigated by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),and small angle X-ray scattering(SAXS),while the mechanical properties and formability were analyzed through uniaxial tensile tests and formability tests. The results in-dicate that the mechanical properties of the pre-hardened alloys exhibited negligible changes after experiencing 1-month natural aging(NA).The deviations of ultimate tensile strength(UTS),yield strength(YS),and sheet formability(Erichsen value)are all less than 2%.Also,after different NA time(from 48 h to 1 month)is applied to alloys before pre-hardening treatment, the pre-hardened alloys possess stable microstructure and mechanical properties as well.Interestingly, with the extension of NA time before pre-hardening treatment from 48 h to 1 month, the contribution of NA to the pre-hardening treatment is limited.Only a yield strength increment of 20 MPa is achieved, with no loss in elongation. The limited enhancement is mainly attributed to the fact that only a limited number of clusters are transformed into Guinier-Preston(GP)zones at the early stage of pre-hardening treatment, and the formation ofθ''phase inhibits the nucleation and growth of GP zones as the precipitated phase evolves. 展开更多

Within the past ten years, spark plasma sintering(SPS)has become an increasingly popular process for Mg manufacturing. In the SPS process, interparticle diffusion of compressed particles is rapidly achieved due to the concept of Joule heating.Compared to traditional and additive manufacturing(AM)techniques,SPS gives unique control of the structural and microstructural features of Mg components.By doing so,their mechanical, tribological, and corrosion properties can be tailored.Although great advancements in this field have been made, these pieces of knowledge are scattered and have not been contextualized into a single work. The motivation of this work is to address this scientific gap and to provide a groundwork for understanding the basics of SPS manufacturing for Mg.To do so,the existing body of SPS Mg literature was first surveyed, with a focus on their structural formation and degradation mechanisms. It was found that successful Mg SPS fabrication highly depended on the processing temperature, particle size, and particle crystallinity. The addition of metal and ceramic composites also affected their microstructural features due to the Zener pinning effect. In degradative environments, their performance depends on their structural features and whether they have secondary phased composites. In industrial applications,SPS'd Mg was found to have great potential in biomedical, hydrogen storage, battery, automotive, and recycling sectors. The prospects to advance the field include using Mg as a doping agent for crystallite size refinement and using bulk metallic Mg-based glass powders for amorphous SPS components.Despite these findings, the interactions of multi-composites on the processing-structure-property relationships of SPS Mg is not well understood. In total, this work will provide a useful direction in the SPS field and serve as a milestone for future Mg-based SPS manufacturing. 展开更多

This review focuses on thermodynamic and physical parameters, synthesis methods, and reported phases of Magnesium(Mg)containing high-entropy alloys(HEAs).Statistical data of publications concerning Mg-containing HEAs were collected and analyzed.Data on the chemical elements included in Mg-containing HEAs,their theoretical end experimental densities, thermodynamic parameters, physical parameters, fabricated techniques and reported phases were also collected and discussed. On the basis of this information,a new classification for HEAs was proposed. It is also shown that the existing thermodynamic parameters cannot accurately predict the formation of a single phase solid solution for Mg-containing HEAs.The physical parameters of Mg-containing HEAs are within a wide range, and most of the synthesized Mg-containing HEAs have a complex multiphase structure. 展开更多

Biodegradable implants from magnesium(Mg)alloys have emerged in the biomedical field especially in the orthopedic and cardiovascular stent applications owing to their low density, high specific strength, excellent machinability, good biocompatibility, and biodegradability. The primary shortcoming of Mg-based implants is their low corrosion resistance in the physiological environment, which results in premature mechanical integrity loss before adequate healing and the production of excessive hydrogen gas, which is harmful to the body tissues and negatively affects the biocompatibility of the implant.Laser surface modification has recently received attention because it can improve the surface properties such as surface chemistry, roughness, topography, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, hydrophilicity, and thus cell response to the surface of the material. The composition and microstructures including textures and phases of laser-treated surfaces depend largely on the laser processing parameters(input laser power, laser scan velocity, frequency, pulse duration, pressure, gas circulation, working time, spot size, beam focal position, and laser track overlap)and the thermophysical properties of the substrate(solubility, melting point, and boiling point). This review investigates the impacts of various laser surface modification techniques including laser surface melting, laser surface alloying, laser cladding, laser surface texturing, and laser shock peening, and highlights their significance in improving the surface properties of biodegradable Mg alloys for implant applications.Additionally,we explore how different laser process parameters affect its composition, microstructure, and surface properties in each laser surface modification technique. 展开更多

High-entropy alloys(HEAs)possess outstanding features such as corrosion resistance, irradiation resistance, and good mechan-ical properties.A few HEAs have found applications in the fields of aerospace and defense.Extensive studies on the deformation mech-anisms of HEAs can guide microstructure control and toughness design, which is vital for understanding and studying state-of-the-art structural materials.Synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction are necessary techniques for materials science research, especially for in situ coupling of physical/chemical fields and for resolving macro/microcrystallographic information on materials.Recently, several re-searchers have applied synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction methods to study the deformation mechanisms, phase transformations, stress behaviors, and in situ processes of HEAs,such as variable-temperature,high-pressure,and hydrogenation processes. In this review, the principles and development of synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction are presented, and their applications in the deformation mechanisms of HEAs are discussed. The factors that influence the deformation mechanisms of HEAs are also outlined. This review fo-cuses on the microstructures and micromechanical behaviors during tension/compression or creep/fatigue deformation and the application of synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction methods to the characterization of dislocations, stacking faults, twins, phases, and intergrain/interphase stress changes.Perspectives on future developments of synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction and on research directions on the deformation mechanisms of novel metals are discussed. 展开更多

The electrochemical methanol oxidation is a crucial reaction in the conversion of renewable energy. To enable the widespread adoption of direct methanol fuel cells(DMFCs),it is essential to create and engineer catalysts that are both highly effective and robust for conducting the methanol oxidation reaction(MOR).In this work, trimetallic PtCoRu electrocatalysts on nitrogen-doped carbon and multi-wall carbon nanotubes(PtCoRu@NC/MWCNTs)were prepared through a two-pot synthetic strategy. The acceleration of CO oxidation to CO_(2) and the blocking of CO reduction on adjacent Pt active sites were attributed to the crucial role played by cobalt atoms in the as-prepared electrocatalysts. The precise control of Co atoms loading was achieved through precursor stoichiometry.Various physicochemical techniques were employed to analyze the morphology, element composition, and electronic state of the catalyst.Electrochemical investigations and theoretical calculations confirmed that the Pt_(1)Co_(3)Ru_(1)@NC/MWCNTs exhibit excellent electrocatalytic performance and durability for the process of MOR.The enhanced MOR activity can be attributed to the synergistic effect between the multiple elements resulting from precisely controlled Co loading content on surface of the electrocatalyst, which facilitates efficient charge transfer. This interaction between the multiple components also modifies the electronic structures of active sites, thereby promoting the conversion of intermediates and accelerating the MOR process. Thus, achieving precise control over Co loading in PtCoRu@NC/MWCNTs would enable the development of high-performance catalysts for DMFCs. 展开更多

The sessile drop method was applied to the experimental investigation of the wetting and spreading behaviors of liquid Mg drops on pure Ni substrates. For comparison, the experiments were performed in two variants:(1)using the Capillary Purification(CP)procedure, which allows the non-contact heating and squeezing of a pure oxide-free Mg drop;(2)by classical Contact Heating(CH)procedure. The high-temperature tests were performed under isothermal conditions(CP:760℃for 30 s;CH:715℃for 300 s)using Ar+5 wt%H_(2) atmosphere.During the sessile drop tests, images of the Mg/Ni couples were recorded by CCD cameras(57 fps),which were then applied to calculate the contact angles of metal/substrate couples.Scanning and transmission electron microscopy analyses, both coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, were used for detailed structural characterization of the solidified couples. It was found that an oxide-free Mg drop obtained by the CP procedure showed a wetting phenomenon on the Ni substrate(an average contact angleθ<90°in<1 s),followed by fast spreading and good wetting over the Ni substrate(θ_((CP))~20°in 5 s)to form a final contact angle ofθ_(f(CP))~18°.In contrast,a different wetting behavior was observed for the CH procedure, where the unavoidable primary oxide film on the Mg surface blocked the spreading of liquid Mg showing apparently non-wetting behavior after 300 s contact at the test temperature. However,in both cases, the deep craters formed in the Ni substrates under the Mg drops and significant change in the structure of initially pure Mg drops to Mg-Ni alloys suggest a strong dissolution of Ni in liquid Mg and apparent values of the final contact angles measured for the Mg/Ni system. 展开更多

Mg-6Zn-2X(Fe/Cu/Ni)alloys were prepared through semi-continuous casting, with the aim of identifying a degradable magnesium(Mg)alloy suitable for use in fracturing balls.A comparative analysis was conducted to assess the impacts of adding Cu and Ni,which result in finer grains and the formation of galvanic corrosion sites.Scanner electronic microscopy examination revealed that precipitated phases concentrated at grain boundaries, forming a semi-continuous network structure that facilitated corrosion penetration in Mg-6Zn-2Cu and Mg-6Zn-2Ni alloys.Pitting corrosion was observed in Mg-6Zn-2Fe,while galvanic corrosion was identified as the primary mechanism in Mg-6Zn-2Cu and Mg-6Zn-2Ni alloys.Among the tests, the Mg-6Zn-2Ni alloy exhibited the highest corrosion rate(approximately 932.9 mm/a)due to its significant potential difference.Mechanical testing showed that Mg-6Zn-2Ni alloy possessed suitable ultimate compressive strength, making it a potential candidate material for degradable fracturing balls, effectively addressing the challenges of balancing strength and degradation rate in fracturing applications. 展开更多

Mg-based amorphous alloys exhibit efficient catalytic performance and excellent biocompatibility with a promising application probability, specifically in the field of azo dye wastewater degradation. However, the problems like difficulty in preparation and poor cycling stability need to be solved. At present,Mg-based amorphous alloys applied in wastewater degradation are available in powder and ribbon. The amorphous alloy powder fabricated by ball milling has a high specific surface area, and its reactivity is thousands of times better than that of gas atomized alloy powder. But the development is limited due to the high energy consumption, difficult and costly process of powder recycling. The single roller melt-spinning method is a new manufacturing process of amorphous alloy ribbon.Compared to amorphous powder, the specific surface area of amorphous ribbon is relatively lower, therefore,it is necessary to carry out surface modification to enhance it.Dealloying is a way that can form a pore structure on the surface of the amorphous alloys, increasing the specific surface area and providing more reactive sites, which all contribute to the catalytic performance.Exploring the optimal conditions for Mg-based amorphous alloys in wastewater degradation by adjusting amorphous alloy composition, choosing suitable method to preparation and surface modification, reducing cost, expanding the pH range will advance the steps to put Mg-based amorphous alloys in industrial environments into practice. 展开更多

In this study,a phase-field scheme that rigorously obeys conservation laws and irreversible thermodynamics is developed for modeling stress-corrosion coupled damage(SCCD).The coupling constitutive relationships of the deformation,phase-field damage, mass transfer, and electrostatic field are derived from the entropy inequality. The SCCD localization induced by secondary phases in Mg is numerically simulated using the implicit iterative algorithm of the self-defined finite elements. The quantitative evaluation of the SCCD of a C-ring is in good agreement with the experimental results. To capture the damage localization,a micro-galvanic corrosion domain is defined, and the buffering effect on charge migration is explored.Three cases are investigated to reveal the effect of localization on corrosion acceleration and provide guidance for the design for resistance to SCCD at the crystal scale. 展开更多

Magnesium(Mg)-based bone implants degrade rapidly in the physiological environment of the human body which affects their structural integrity and biocompatibility before adequate bone repair.Rare earth elements(REEs)have demonstrated their effectiveness in tailoring the corrosion and mechanical behavior of Mg alloys. This study methodically investigated the impacts of scandium(Sc)and terbium(Tb)in tailoring the corrosion resistance, mechanical properties, and biocompatibility of Mg–0.5Zn–0.35Zr–0.15Mn(MZZM)alloys fabricated via casting and hot extrusion. Results indicate that addition of Sc and Tb improved the strength of MZZM alloys via grain size reduction and solid solution strengthening mechanisms. The extruded MZZM–(1–2)Sc–(1–2)Tb(wt.%)alloys exhibit compressive strengths within the range of 336–405 MPa,surpassing the minimum required strength of 200 MPa for bone implants by a significant margin.Potentiodynamic polarization tests revealed low corrosion rates of as–cast MZZM(0.25 mm/y),MZZM–2Tb(0.45 mm/y),MZZM–1Sc–1Tb(0.18 mm/y),and MZZM–1Sc–2Tb(0.64 mm/y),and extruded MZZM(0.17 mm/y),MZZM–1Sc(0.15 mm/y),MZZM-2Sc(0.45 mm/y),MZZM-1Tb(0.17 mm/y),MZZM-2Tb(0.10 mm/y),MZZM–1Sc-1Tb(0.14 mm/y),MZZM-1Sc-2Tb(0.40 mm/y),and MZZM–2Sc–2Tb(0.51 mm/y)alloys,which were found lower compared to corrosion rate of high-purity Mg(~1.0 mm/y)reported in the literature.Furthermore, addition of Sc,or Tb,or Sc and Tb to MZZM alloys did not adversely affect the viability of SaOS2 cells, but enhanced their initial cell attachment, proliferation, and spreading shown via polygonal shapes and filipodia. This study emphasizes the benefits of incorporating Sc and Tb elements in MZZM alloys,as they effectively enhance corrosion resistance, mechanical properties, and biocompatibility simultaneously. 展开更多

Short-range ordering(SRO)is one of the most important structural features of high entropy alloys(HEAs).However, the chemical and structural analyses of SROs are very difficult due to their small size, complexed compositions, and varied locations.Transmission electron microscopy(TEM)as well as its aberration correction techniques are powerful for characterizing SROs in these compositionally complex alloys. In this short communication,we summarized recent progresses regarding characterization of SROs using TEM in the field of HEAs.By using advanced TEM techniques, not only the existence of SROs was confirmed, but also the effect of SROs on the deformation mechanism was clarified. Moreover, the perspective related to application of TEM techniques in HEAs are also discussed. 展开更多
