The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the effects of male age and ejaculatory abstinence on semen parameters and reproductive hormones among men residing in Africa and the Middle East. A total of 70,142 semen analysis results were analysed and grouped according to the age intervals (16 - 20, 21 - 30, 31 - 40, 41 - 50, 51 - 60, >60) and ejaculatory abstinence (<2 days, 2 - 5 days and >5 days). Semen parameters i.e. volume, concentration, progressive motility, total progressively motile count, morphology, total normal sperm count, DNA fragmentation, viability, sORP, normed sORP were specifically evaluated. Additionally, for each age interval, reproductive hormones i.e. estradiol, luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, testosterone and prolactin were evaluated. Semen volume, total progressively motile count, sperm morphology and total normal sperm count constantly decrease significantly after the age of 30 years. Sperm concentration started declining significantly after the age of 50 years. There was a constant age-  related increase in number of spermatozoa with damaged DNA. sORP constantly increased up to 60 years. Furthermore, constantage-related decreases in FSH, serum testosterone and prolact in were observed from patients aged between 16 years and 60 years. Semen volume, sperm concentration, progressive motility and normal morphology were significantly higher in patients having > 5 days of abstinence. Patients having > 5 days of abstinence had the lowest normed sORP. Male age significantly affects sperm parameters and reproductive hormones in fertile and infertile men residing in Africa and the Middle East. Prolonged abstinence days provides better semen quality. 展开更多

[Objectives]This study was conducted to investigate the effects of Polygonatum odoratum polysaccharide(POP)on organ relative weights and reproductive hormone levels in male rats fed a high-fat diet.[Methods]Thirty healthy male Sprague-Dawley(SD)rats were randomly divided into two groups according to their body weight:10 in normal control group(Group NC,n=10)and 20 in experimental group(n=20).The rats in experimental group were fed a high-fat diet for eight weeks before they were further randomly divided into two groups:high fat group(Group HF)and high fat+400 mg/(kg·d)POP group(Group HF+POP).In Group HF+POP,the rats were administered with POP for another six weeks, before their blood plasma was collected, and the relative weights of their testis and epididymis were calculated. The plasma levels of testosterone(T),estrogen(E2),follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH),cortisol(C)and luteinizing hormone(LH)were measured by radioimmunoassay, and the plasma levels of sex hormone-binding globulin(SHBG)and insulin-like growth factor-1(IGF-1)were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.[Results]Compared with Group HF,POP could effectively inhibit rat obesity caused by high-fat diets, increase the relative weights of their testis and epididymis, plasma levels of LH,E2,FSH,T,SHBG and IGF-1,and reduce the plasma level of E2.[Conclusions]Polygonatum odoratum polysaccharide(POP)is able to effectively regulate the level of reproductive hormones in high-fat diet fed rats, and helps to protect their reproductive function. 展开更多

Objective:To evaluate the legacy and novel per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances(PFAS)exposure in women of reproductive age,and to explore the effects on female reproductive hormones. Methods:We used cross-sectional data of 433 normal women of reproductive age from 2013 to 2015.Data of age,age at menarche, parity,BMI,education, and income were collected through questionnaires, serum samples were collected for reproductive hormones, and plasma samples for PFAS measurement by ultraperformance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometer(UPLC-MS/MS).Multiple linear regression and quantile g-computation were adopted to analyze the association between PFAS and reproductive hormones. Results:The detection rates of 6:2 Cl-PFESA,8:2 Cl-PFESA and HFPO-DA in the plasma were 100%,99.8%and 99.9%,respectively.The median concentrations of these chemicals were 2.27 ng/mL,0.07 ng/mL and 0.03 ng/mL,respectively.Multiple linear regression analysis showed a positive association between branched PFOS[1m-PFOS(β=0.131,95%CI:0.021,0.242),br-PFOS(β=0.119,95%CI:0.005,0.234)]and progesterone. In addition, mixed exposure model suggested that PFAS had a positive association with progesterone(β=0.549,95%CI:0.323,0.774).Conclusion:In this study,a mixed exposure model was used to evaluate the combined effects of PFAS mixtures, reflecting the association between multiple environmental PFAS exposure and reproductive hormones, and a higher concentration of novel PFAS was found in women of reproductive age, confirming that PFAS exposure may be related to reproductive hormone disorders in women of reproductive age. 展开更多

However, the success of these depends on different factors such as the proper selection of the donor female. For this reason, endocrine markers have been used to evaluate the ovarian reserve, which allow a successful selection of donors. Recent research has shown, among other things, that concentrations greater than 0.130 ng/mL of anti-Mullerian hormone (also known as Muller-inhibiting substance, which is a member of the transforming growth factor beta superfamily of growth and differentiation factors) are related to donors of more than fifteen transferable embryos. Therefore, this review describes studies showing that the measurement of anti-Müllerian hormone concentrations, before superovulation programs, reduces the costs per embryo produced. 展开更多

Aim: To examine whether reproductive hormones play a role in the association between body mass index (BMI) and semen quality. Methods: Semen quality and testosterone (T), luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and estradiol (E2) were evaluated in 990 fertile males with age 38.9 ± 9.7 (mean + SD) years recruited from the Chinese general population in 2001 and 2002. Results: Semen quality was reduced among underweight (BMI 〈 18.5) compared with normal (BMI 18.5-24.9) and overweight (BMI 25.0-29.9), but the associations were independent of reproductive hormones. After adjustment for the potential confounders, underweight men had reductions in sperm concentration (22.4 × 10^6/mL), total sperm count (52.9× 10^6) and percentage of normal sperm forms (6.9%) compared with men with normal BMI. Being underweight may be a risk factor for low sperm concentration (OR: 4.68, 95% confidence intervals [CI]: 2.01-10.91). Otherwise, being overweight may be a protected factor for low sperm concentration (OR: 0.25; 95% CI: 0.08-0.83) and low total sperm count (OR: 0.37, 95% CI: 0.15-0.87). Conclusion: Low BMI was associated with reduced semen quality. The associations between BMI and semen quality were found statistically significant even after adjustment for reproductive hormones. Reproductive hormones cannot explain the association between BMI and semen quality. 展开更多

Several animal studies indicate that mercury is a male reproductive toxicant, but human studies are few and contradictory. We examined semen characteristics and serum levels of reproductive hormones in relation to environmental exposure to mercury. Blood and semen samples were collected from 529 male partners of pregnant women living in Greenland, Poland and Ukraine between May 2002 and February 2004. The median concentration of the total content of mercury in whole blood was 9.2 ng ml-1 in Greenland (0.2- 385.8 ng ml-1), 1.0 ng m1-1 in Poland (0.2-6.4 ng ml-z) and 1.0 ng ml-I in Ukraine (0.2-4.9 ng ml-1). We found a significantly positive association between the blood levels of mercury and serum concentration of inhibin B in men from Greenland (p=0.074, 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.021 to 0.126) and in an analysis including men from all three regions (p=0.067, 95% C1=0.024 to O. 110). The association may be due to beneficial effects of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), which are contained in seafood and fish. No significant association (P〉O.05) was found between blood concentrations of mercury and any of the other measured semen characteristics (semen volume, total sperm count, sperm concentration, morphology and motility) and reproductive hormones (free androgen index {FAI), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone and LH xtestosterone) in any region. In conclusion, the findings do not provide evidence that environmental mercury exposure in Greenlandic and European men with median whole blood concentration up to 10 ng m1^-1 has adverse effects on biomarkers of male reproductive health. 展开更多

The failure of testicular descent (cryptorchidism) is known to cause abnormal testicular development and function. Unilateral cryptorchidism is prevalent in West African Dwarf (WAD) goats particularly in some areas where affected bucks are presumed to have better libido and reproductive efficiency by farmers. Androgens produced by the testes can influence libido and other hormonal and metabolic processes in the body. The study investigated the influence of natural unilateral cryptorchidism on serum reproductive hormones, total protein, lipid profile, oxidative stress, and haematology and libido in WAD bucks. Ten WAD bucks (aged 12 - 14 months) comprising 5 bucks with normal descended testes (N group) and 5 unilaterally-cryptorchid bucks (UC group) were studied. Blood and sera were collected and evaluated for haematology, serum total proteins and lipids (cholesterol, triglycerides and lipoproteins) concentrations, serum oxidative stress (catalase and lipid peroxidation activity), and serum levels of reproductive hormones (testosterone, FSH and LH). Libido testing of bucks was also performed by randomly isolating and confining each individual male with a doe on standing heat and recording the number of mountings made by the male within a period of 5 minutes as the libido score. The evaluated haematological indices and serum levels of proteins, lipids, oxidative stress indicators and reproductive hormones were not significantly different between the N and UC groups (p > 0.05). Although a higher mean libido score was recorded in N bucks compared to the UC group, this difference was not significant. Whereas no negative effects were observed in the evaluated physiologic indices in UC bucks, these findings do not support the presumption by farmers that UC bucks have better libido than bucks with fully descended testes. Therefore, these animals should not be selected for breeding to avoid increasing the prevalence of unilateral cryptorchidism due to its genetic attribute. 展开更多

[Objective] The aim of this paper is to find the change law of reproductive hormones of female swamp buffalo in off season for estrus and to investigate the relationship between various hormones. [ Method] The concentrations of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hor- mone ( LH), inhibin ( INH), estradiol ( E2 ) and progesterone ( P4 ) were determined by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in off season for estrue. The changes of follicles in the estrous cycle were examined using B-mode ultrasonography. [ Result] In off season for estrus of female swamp buffalo from Guangxi region, the blood concentration of E2 and P4 varied fluctuantly. The concentration of E2 had two peaks, respec- tively 3 d before ovulation and after 13 d post ovulation. The concentration of P4 increased slowly from the first day after ovulation, increased rapidly from 5 to 13 d, peaked on Day 16 and decreased to the baseline 3 d before ovulation. The concentrations of FSH, LH and INH roached a peak re- spectively after 10 d post ovulation, 2 d before ovulation, and after 4 d post ovulation. The changes of the hormones had correlations. The concen- trations of FSH, LH and INH had highly significant correlations with each other, while the concentration of INH had highly significant correlations with that of E2 or P4- The concentration of E2 also had a highly significant correlation with that of P4- [ Conclusionl The study can guide the breeding of swamp buffalo from Guanqxi reqion and also help to improve their roproduction performance. 展开更多

Anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) is an endocrine marker for fertility in many species. This study investigated possible correlations between serum AMH concentrations, mean number of lambs born (out-of-season in spring or fall), and estimated breeding values (EBVs) for number of lambs born (NLB), number of lambs weaned (NLW), maternal weaning weight (MWWT), weaning weight (WWT), and maternal index (determined by Sheep Genetics Australia). Blood was collected at breeding from Katahdin ewes between 0.7 and 7 years of age in 2015 (n = 163) for the analysis of serum concentrations of AMH. Anti-Mullerian hormone concentration was either expressed quantitatively or divided into quartiles (AMH Q1 through Q4, with Q1 the lowest and Q4 the highest, pg/ml). Data were analyzed by PROC CORR, GLM or chi-squared using SAS. Mean serum AMH was 182 ± 11 pg/ml and ranged from 0 to 1112 pg/ml. There was no correlation between serum AMH and EBVs for NLB, NLW, MWWT, WWT and the maternal index. Serum AMH concentration was similar in ewes in different age categories (P = 0.157). There was a correlation between EBV for NLB (0.29;P = 0.0002) and NLW (0.19;P = 0.013) with average number of lambs born. Ewes in the lowest AMH quartile (Q1) had a lower mean number of offspring born from spring breeding compared with ewes in other AMH quartiles (Q2, Q3, and Q4;P < 0.05). Further study is needed to determine the effectiveness of using serum AMH for selecting ewes for out-of-season (spring) breeding. 展开更多

Objective: To provide an evidence-based, consistent assessment of the burden of breast cancer attributable to reproductive factors (RFs, including nulliparity, mean number of children, age at first birth and breastfeeding), use of oral contraceptives (OCs, restricted to the age group of 15-49 years), and hormone replacement therapy (HRT), as well as of the burden of ovarian cancer attributable to the mean number of children in China in 2005. Methods: We derived the prevalence of these risk factors and the relative risk of breast and ovarian cancer from national surveys or large-scale studies conducted in China. In the case of RFs, we compared the exposure distributions in 2001 and counterfactual exposure. Results: Exposure of RFs in 2002 was found to account for 6.74% of breast cancer, corresponding to 9,617 cases and 2,769 deaths, and for 2.78% of ovarian cancer (712 cases, 294 deaths). The decrease in mean number of children alone was responsible for 1.47% of breast cancer and 2.78% of ovarian cancer. The prevalence of OC use was 1.74% and the population attributable fraction (PAF) of breast cancer was 0.71%, corresponding to 310 cases and 90 deaths. The PAF of breast cancer due to HRT was 0.31%, resulting in 297 cases and 85 deaths. Conclusion: RFs changes in China contributed to a sizable fraction of breast and ovarian cancer incidence and mortality, whereas HRT and OCs accounted for relatively low incidence of breast cancer in China. 展开更多

Aim: To develop an algorithm for use in population-based studies to assess testicular function by measurements of totalurinary follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). Methods: Total concentrations of urinary FSH were measured in a groupof 44 men at the University of California, Davis (UCD) and were compared to FSH measurements in serum. On thebasis of these and other published data, a urinary FSH value of >2 ng/mg creatinine (Cr) was selected as the cutoffpoint to identify men with elevated serum FSH ( > 12 IU/L) or low sperm counts ( < 20 million/mL). Results: Thesensitivity and specificity of this algorithm for detecting elevated serum FSH in a group of 58 agricultural workers in thePeople's Republic of China were 100 % and 50 %, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of this algorithm fordetecting low sperm counts in a population of 105 infertility patients at UCD were 58 % and 76 %, respectively. Conclusion: This test may have particular value in identifying populations with no evidence of testicular toxicity, andin which labor-intensive semen studies may not be feasible. 展开更多

Methods:Subjects included 1,498 men aged 40 to 69 from a county, and the serum reproductive hormones of 434 subjects were measured and calculated. In addition, the prevalence rates of LOH were analyzed by cut-off point of total testosterone(TT) and free testosterone(cFT),and screening scales(a questionnaire of androgen deficiency in the aging males(ADAM) and a scale of aging males’ symptoms(AMS)).TT,cFT,bio-available testosterone (Bio-T),luteinizing hormone(LH),sex hormone binding globulin(SHBG),testosterone secretion index(TSI), free testosterone index(FTD,the positive rates of LOH screening, androgen deficiency rates and the clinical prevalence rates of LOH were measured or calculated. Results:The serum TT levels did not change significantly with male aging while serum LH and SHBG levels gradually increased, but cFT,Bio-T,TSI and FTI levels gradually decreased with male aging. There was very significant difference in other six parameters of reproductive hormones(P<0.01),except for serum TT among the four age brackets(P>0.05).There was no correlation between serum TT levels and aging,LH levels(P>0.05). However, there was significantly a positive correlation between serum LH,SHBG and age(P<0.01),while there were negative correlation between cFT,Bio-T,TSI,FTI and age,LH levels(P<0.01).Moreover,SHBG level was positively correlated with LH level(P<0.01). Utilizing the Questionnaire of ADAM and AMS to screen subjects aged 40 to 69 years, mean positive rates of LOH screening were 80.77%and 32.34%respectively.Mean androgen deficiency rates were 14.02%and 43.69% by using TT and cFT cut-off point. In addition, mean LOH clinical prevalence rates of subjects on positive questionnaire results were 37.85%and 15.42%. Conclusion:The serum TT levels did not change significantly with male aging while serum LH,SHBG,cFT, Bio-T,TSI and FTI levels had the gradient change with aging. On the basis of Chinese population, however, the positive rate of LOH screening, androgen deficiency rate and clinical prevalence rate of LOH were obviously higher than that those of the other foreign studies. 展开更多

Objective:To explore the relationship between Hashimoto's autoimmune hypothyroidism(HT)and male fertility, focusing on hormonal and seminal factors. Methods:A systematic literature search was conducted across databases such as PubMed,Web of Science,EMBASE,Scopus,Cochrane, and Google Scholar, covering studies published from January 2000 to March 2024.Studies investigating the impact of HT on semen quality parameters and reproductive hormones were included.Pooled effect estimates were calculated using standard mean difference(SMD)and 95%confidence intervals(CI).Results:A total of 8 studies with 8965 participants were included.HT significantly affected semen quality and reproductive hormone levels.Specifically, there was a notable decrease in progressive morphology(SMD=-0.78;95%CI:-1.40 to-0.17;P=0.01)and sperm motility(SMD=-1.151;95%CI:-1.876 to-0.425;P=0.002).In addition, there were no significant changes in reproductive hormones, although there were elevated levels of luteinizing hormone(SMD=0.437;95%CI:0.000 to 0.874;P=0.050)and follicle-stimulating hormone(SMD=0.293;95%CI:-0.171 to 0.758;P=0.216),with a slight impact on testosterone levels(SMD=-1.143;95%CI:-2.487 to 0.200;P=0.095).Conclusions:This systematic review and meta-analysis provides robust evidence of the detrimental effects of HT on semen quality and reproductive hormones, underscoring the necessity for thorough evaluation and management of thyroid function in male infertility assessments. 展开更多

There are limited studies examining the relationship between serum reproductive hormone levels and sexual functions among prostate cancer (PCa) patients after rapid prostatectomy (RP). Aim: The present study aimed at evaluating the correlation between post-operative serum levels of some male reproductive hormones of PCa patients and their sexual functions in the months following RP.<span><span><span style="font-family:;" "=""> </span></span></span><span style="font-family:Verdana;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">A total of 20 male patients with clinically localized PCa who had undergone RP within the last 12 months prior to commencement of the study, were invited to participate.</span></span></span><span><span><span style="font-family:;" "=""> </span></span></span><span style="font-family:Verdana;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">The</span></span></span><span><span><span style="font-family:;" "=""> </span></span></span><span style="font-family:Verdana;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;"><span style="font-family:Verdana;">postoperative serum levels of their luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and total testosterone (Te) were measured.
