Discourse Analysis in Translation of Chinese Literature: The Case Study of Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang’s Translation of Kong Yiji

Since the early 1970s,discourse analysis has garnered significant attention across various academic disciplines,marked by the proliferation of numerous theoretical frameworks.Then the profound impact of discourse analysis on the field of translation research has become increasingly apparent,with a substantial body of translation studies embracing the discourse analysis approach.The disciplinary significance of discourse analysis has become undeniable.Contemporary China is in a relatively weak position in global cultural communication.To advance Chinese culture on the global stage,Chinese literary works serve as a precious channel.To effectively showcase the unique qualities of Chinese literature,translators must consider a multitude of influencing factors and address them judiciously to enable target language readers to fully immerse themselves in the essence of Chinese literary artistry.This paper takes Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang’s translation of Kong Yiji as an example to elucidate the function of discourse analysis in translation of Chinese literature.

The Chinese- English Translation of Company Profiles——A Case Study Based on Foreign Trade Companies in Ningbo

As Chinese enterprises are seeking various ways to develop foreign cooperation abroad, the Chinese-English translation of company profiles plays an ever greater role in communication with the whole world. However, a number of the translation versions fail to achieve a satisfactory effect, neglecting target readers' cultural background and their mode of thinking. This thesis intends to make an exploration of differences between Chinese and English company profiles and discuss the pragmatic, cultural and linguistic translation errors appeared in some company profiles of foreign trade enterprises in the city of Ningbo.

Problems in C-E Translation of Company Profiles from the Perspective of Linguistic and Cultural Differences Between Chinese and English and Counter Measures

Company profile, as an important propaganda media, plays a crucial role in the growth of Chinese companies and their expansion into the international market. By making comparison between Chinese company profiles and English company profiles in diction, syntax features, passage features, thought patterns and culture, and analyzing C-E translation errors in the company profiles, the writer expect to offer targeted measures to improve the C-E company profiles of Chinese enterprises. To improve the C- E translation of Chinese enterprises, translators need to focus on the following things: the absorbing of source language text, enough communication with people from different cultures and comparative study of Chinese and English.

A Comparative Study on David Hawkes and Xianyi/Gladys Yang's Translations of Chinese Common Sayings in Hong Lou Meng

Honglou Meng is an encyclopedia of Chinese language in which includes many different Chinese linguistic features, e.g. idioms, common sayings, poems etc. There are 109 Chinese common sayings in the first 80 chapters of the novel. Most Chinese common sayings contain figurative meanings and the images involved are usually vivid and culture-specific; therefore it is very difficult to translate them. It is found that David Hawkes is more creative and use more free translation while the Yangs use more literal translation. This supports Feng Qinghua's suggestion that the Yangs prefer to use literal translation while David Hawkes is inclined to use free translation.

The Limits of Cultural Translatability in Yang Xianyi’s Translation of Poems in A DRM

Poems are the products of national culture, and A Dream of Red Mansions (A DRM) is the collection of Chinese culture in the era when the novel was written, so poems in A DRM express a wealth of cultural messages. According to the Limits of Translatability raised by Catford in 1965, cultural untranslatability occurs when a relevant situational feature for the SL text is absent in the TL. So this paper aims to find problems of cultranslation of poems in A DRM, and tries to further restrict cultural untranslatability by applying compensation strategies.

A Study on C-E Translation of Product Introductory Texts on Company Websites Under Skopos Theory

This paper takes the C-E translation of product introductory texts on official websites of three mobile phone makers as the study object under the Skopos theory, with an aim to identify and analyze the distinctive translation features of such special type of text. The exhausted parse and analysis bring out the findings that there exists a significant translation difference between the Chinese and English-version product introductory texts on official websites. It is found that Chinese introductory texts are more inclined to rely on exquisite words and redundant expressions to describe products’ features and functions, while switching to the corresponding English version, simple vocabularies and compact sentence structure are more frequent. Hereafter, this paper raises two practical guidelines to instruct translation activities in business contexts.

Therapeutic effect of traditional Chinese medicine on coagulation disorder and accompanying intractable jaundice in hepatitis B virus-related liver cirrhosis patients

AIM： TO observe the therapeutic effects of new traditional Chinese medicine （TClVl） therapy on coagulation disorder and accompanying intractable jaundice in HBV-related liver cirrhosis patients. METHODS： Using stratified random sampling according to fibrinogen （Fib） levels, 145 liver cirrhosis patients due to hepatitis B complicated by coagulation disorder were treated. Of them, 70 in research group were treated with TCM by ＂nourishing yin, cooling blood and invigorating blood circulation＂ and Western medicine, 75 in control group were treated with conventional Western medicine. The indexes of liver function, coagulation function and bleeding events were observed and compared. RESULTS： The prothrombin time （PT） was shorter and the fibrinogen （Fib） level was higher in the research group than in the control group （Fib = 1.6-2.0 g/L, 1.1-1.5 g/L, and ≤ 1.0 g/L）. The total bilirubin （TBIL） level was significantly lower in the research group than in the control group, except for the subgroup of FIB ≤ 1.0 g/L. CONCLUSION： TCM therapy can improve coagulation fuction and decrease TBIL.

Is the Equity Transfer Agreement of a Chinese-Foreign Contractual Joint Venture Valid? A Case Comment on Xianyuan v.Zhongxin

Under Chinese law, when parties have signed an equity transfer agreement of the Chinese-Foreign contractual joint venture, they need to report to the examination and approval authority for approval. However, due to imperfection of and conflicts among laws and regulations as well as misunderstanding of the above system, it is always difficult for judges to determine the validity of such equity transfer agreement under the administrative approval system. Among the three categories of FIEs provided in Chinese law 1, scholars have had a comprehensive discussion over equity transfer agreement involving Sino-Foreign Equity Joint Venture Enterprises, but this case is concerned with the equity transfer agreement of a Chinese-Foreign contractual joint venture. In this case, the People's Supreme Court holds that the equity transfer agreement that has not undergone the approval procedures are not valid but not void. Furthermore, the parties that are bound to submit the agreement to the approval authority shall perform their duties of this kind.
