Besides fundamental Jungian archetypes (persona, shadow, anima, animus, great mother, wise old man, hero, self and self-realization), there may be plenty of other psychological archetypes, existence of which can be deduced indirectly through stories, art, myths, religions or dreams. Purpose: This review article is to discuss the myths of Medusa, Hades and Persephone, as well as psychological archetypes present in art and stories. Methods: Several famous psychological archetypes deducted from myths, art and culture, are presented in this article and discussed from medical, psychological and philosophical perspective. Results: Interpretation of psychological archetypes deduced from here presented myths and works of art are posttraumatic embitterment disorder (Medusa), arranged marriage (Hades and Persephone), duality of human nature (Jekyll and Hyde), shared psychosis (Harley Quinn and Joker), fear, phobias, child abuse and childhood traumas (It), instinctive fear of clinical and psychic/emotional vampirism (vampires), the mystery of time (Langoliers). Conclusion: Psychological archetypes represent the powerful source of artistic and scientific inspiration originating from collective unconscious. Research, discovery and understanding of psychological archetypes may be of great value as these reveal universal human thoughts, fears, desires, tendencies, and problems being present throughout the history of humankind. Investigation of psychological archetypes may significantly improve our knowledge of human psychology.展开更多

Herein the author investigates Attachment Theory, a theory regarding the human need to connect with caregivers and nurturers in childhood, and--through a psychological lens--how this principle influences the grown characters in O'Connor's work. In an examination of the prevalent archetype of "The Great Mother" in her stories, namely "The Lame Shall Enter First", "The Enduring Chill", and "Parker's Back", we can see the effects of secure---or confident, warm and reliable--parent-child attachment as well as the effects of insecure---unstable and unreliable--attachment. These different attachment styles contribute to the lifelong development of different behaviors and even personalities in the characters of Norton, Asbury, and O.E. Parker. In the cases above mentioned, the relationship between characters and their maternal figures contribute not only to the plot of the story, but also to the fate of the characters--driving them to do things that are often extreme and climactically catalytic. It proves that parent-child relationships have lasting psychological effects, and, in the case of O'Connor's work, spiritual ones as well. O'Connor is well known for the religious morals of her works, and in this study it is ultimately evident that the relationships between characters and their maternal figures reflect and influence each character's relationship with and attitude towards Deity.展开更多

Harry’s experiences demonstrate his heroic traits: the infant exile and reaction to the call foradventures at the departure stage, a road of trials at the initiation stage, and freedom to live at the return stage, allcontributing to his self-transcendence. During these periods, the defeat of Voldemort, the shadow archetype, andHarry’s unconscious self, also plays an indispensable part in the development of his heroic identity.展开更多

This can be seen throughout Greek mythology, for example, The Moirae and The Musai, and of eourse, through the Christian Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. While the archetype of the trinity appears numerous times throughout the Potter series, at its very heart, the series is centrally focused on a triad of trinities: the Trio (Harry, Ron, and Hermione), the three Unforgivable Curses, and the three Deathly Hallows. It is the intersection of this triad of trinities--this "supertrinity"--that not only drive the Potter narrative, but connect the work so readily to the psyche of readers and fans; it is how we are harmonically programmed, in terms of understanding stories.展开更多

The pattern of researches has changed dramatically as William Golding received the Nobel Prize in Literature. However, Chinese scholars mostly focused on digging out this book from the perspective of the darkness of human nature in the past, which was lack of novelty and innovation. In addition, the book itself was a classic work that it fused with shallow and deep implications as well as smooth and obscure language. Therefore the complexity, profundity and diversity of this book made domestic scholars' researches more difficult. So far, the study of book has no progress in domestic. The recent situation is also not encouraging abroad for several years, and some obscure interpretations of the book hinder the study of a large number of foreign researchers.
