Fishes are excellent markers of the extent of pollution from heavy metals in aquatic environments given that they are found at various levels of the food chain. This study aimed to investigate the bioaccumulation of heavy metals(Zn,Pb,Cd,As,and Hg)as well as the activity of delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase(δ-ALA-D)in the livers of cat fishes(Clarias gariepinus)collected from three rivers(Donga,Ibi and Gindin-Dorowa)in Taraba State,Nigeria. The concentrations of heavy metals in the liver tissues were determined using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer in accordance with the method of AOAC(2019),while theδ-ALA-D activity was assayed using the method of Sassa(1982).Results revealed that only Zn and As were present in the liver samples from the three rivers.Pb was found only in the liver from Gindin-Dorowa at the concentration of 0.0012mg/kg which is not significant(P<0.05)when compared with other locations, while Hg and Cd were absent in all the liver samples. The liver sample from Gindin-Dorowa had the highest concentration of Zn(4.2500 mg/kg),followed by Ibi(3.2067 mg/kg),and Donga having the least(2.5500 mg/kg),which were all substantially(P<0.05)different from one another. However, there was no significant(P<0.05)difference in the As composition of liver from Donga(0.0013 mg/kg),Ibi(0.0012 mg/kg)and Gindin-Dorowa(0.0010 mg/kg).The result ofδ-ALA-D activity showed that the highest enzymatic activity was found in the liver sample from Donga which has the least Zn and no Pb content, followed by Ibi sample. This validates the report that heavy metals impairδ-ALA-D activity.Nonetheless, the concentrations of all metals in fish livers from all regions do not exceed the acceptable limits set by international law, making them safe for human consumption and possibly not having a negative impact on public health.Since there is little or no industrial activity in the studied locations, these levels may be consequent to low anthropogenic inputs. The current situation should be safeguarded to prevent pollution of the river’s aquatic biota in the near future, and more appropriate steps should be made to guarantee higher fish quality and life in the rivers. 展开更多

Objective To evaluate the possible role of environmental exposure to lead as a risk factor for prostate pathology in patients suffering from prostate cancer (PCA) and benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). Methods Blood lead (BPb) level was determined in PCA and BPH cases using a graphite furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer and compared with those in a control group living in the similar socioeconomic environment. Results BPb was significantly higher in PCA and BPH cases than in normals (P<0.05). Blood levels of zinc and copper were significantly lower in PCA and BPH cases when compared with controls (P<0.05). In all the three groups, a statistically significant positive correlation between lead and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TEARS) measured as malondialdehyde, and negative correlation between blood lead and antioxidant GSH level, indicative of possible generation of reactive oxygen species, were also observed after adjusting for age as a possible confounders. However, positive association between blood lead and TEARS was relatively higher in PCA patients (r=0.77, P<0.05) than in BPH (r=0.32, P<0.05) and normal (r=0.30, P<0.05). Conclusion These results with limited power seem to suggest for the first time that environmental exposure of aging males to lead may be a risk factor for prostate cancer and/or benign prostate hyperplasia possibly through generation of reactive oxygen species and/or reducing the level of zinc which acts as a cellular growth protector. 展开更多

Spices are generally consumed because of their medicinal properties, taste, and add flavor to food. Objectives: To determine the nutrient contents and heavy metals of five commonly consumed spices, namely turmeric (Curcuma longa), bay leaf (Laurus nobilis), red chili (Capsicum annuum), coriander (Coriander sativum), and black cumin (Nigella sativa) were collected from the local market of Northern zone, Bangladesh and were analyzed. Methods: Nutrient composition was assessed by proximate analysis, trace and heavy metals by atomic absorption spectrophotometry while the indophenol method was used to determine vitamin C. Result: The results revealed that spices are good sources of carbohydrate, fiber, and fat. The highest levels of carbohydrates, dietary fiber, protein, and fat were observed in turmeric (71.1%), black cumin (40.0%), red chili (16.77%), and coriander (17.8%) respectively. Vitamin C was present in trace amounts ranging from 0.04 to 0.1 mg/100g, except black cumin (35.0 mg/100g). Essential trace minerals like sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and iron were significantly present in black cumin and bay leaf. Most of the heavy metal levels in the spices were appreciable amounts i.e. much lesser than the statutory safe limit approved by WHO and FAO for some of the samples. Conclusion: The current study concluded that the investigated spices are nutritionally rich, and heavy metal levels in the examined samples are safe for human consumption. 展开更多

The present study was aimed toward determining the extent of selected metals that can exist in three types of teff cultivated in selected districts of southern Ethiopia. The level of those metals was determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The optimized wet digestion procedure was evaluated employing a spiking method and an acceptable percentage recovery of (91.1% - 108.9%) has been obtained for metals in the teff. The result indicated that the mean concentration of metals (in mg/kg dry weight basis) in teff samples were found to be from 1206.9 to 1768.9 of Ca, 2463.9 to 2554.7 of Mg, 82.6 to 109.9 of Na, 2879 to 3075 of K, 207.4 to 239.5 of Fe, 55.9 to 100.4 of Mn, 27.1 to 87.1 of Zn, 5.4 to 45.5 of Cu and 0.118 to 0.130 of Pb respectively. However, Cd is below the method detection limit. A statistical analysis of variance revealed that there was a significant difference (p ≤ 0.05) between the mineral content in three teff types and teff from the three districts. Red teff had higher essential metal contents except Cu followed by brown teff. Strong positive correlation was recognized between Mg with Ca and K, the rest have moderate or weak correlation. Further study has been done on the mineral contents of similar variety or three types of teff with the soil analysis from different locations. 展开更多
