Effectiveness of a training program based on maker education for baccalaureate nursing students: A quasi-experimental study

Objectives:Maker education is a dominant force in education reform and is viewed as a revolutionary way to learn.As innovative pedagogy is continuously explored in the field of nursing,the emerging role of maker education must be examined.This research aims to build a nursing bachelor education program based on maker education and to evaluate the effectiveness of this program.Methods:Forty volunteer junior students majoring in nursing from a college were the subjects for this quasi-experiment.The training program for nursing students based on maker education was developed and implemented as an additional class for a period of 12 weeks.Before and after the experiment,two measures including the"Williams Creative Scale"and"Current Status Questionnaire of Nursing Students'Learning"were adopted for investigation,and corresponding statistical methods were used for analysis.The degree of satisfaction with this training program was investigated after the experiment.Results:The average scores of creativity,learning interest,cooperative learning skill,scientific research ability,and information attainment of the nursing students after the implementation of maker education all improved.The differences in the above points before and after the experiment were all statistically significant(P<0.05).Most of the students expressed satisfaction with this training program(72.5%were very satisfied,15.0%were partially satisfied,and 12.5%were not satisfied).Conclusion:Implementing the training program based on maker education enhanced student creativity,learning interest,cooperative learning skill,scientific research ability,and information attainment.Comprehensive nursing talents were also cultivated.Our data suggested the importance of improving this program,adopting the method,and pursuing research in nursing education.

Community health nursing courses in baccalaureate nursing programsin China: A descriptive study based on website information

Objective:To survey current community health nursing(CHN)courses offered in baccalaureate nursing programs in the mainland of China from the perspective on information available on websites of colleges and universities.Methods:A descriptive research design was used.Data were collected from the official websites of colleges and universities providing baccalaureate nursing programs in the mainland of China.A checklist was applied to identify academic year,type of course,credit,and class hours for both theory and practice teaching of CHN courses including Community Nursing,Geriatric Nursing,Rehabilitation Nursing,and Health Education.The prescribed textbooks were consulted for teaching content.Results:Colleges(n?16)and universities(n?26)offering baccalaureate nursing programs with accessible online information for curriculum setting were recruited.The results showed that most of the accessible educational institutions(92.86%)have offered three to four investigated CHN courses.Community Nursing,Geriatric Nursing and Rehabilitation Nursing are generally offered to juniors,while Health Education is offered in half of these institutions in different academic years.Community Nursing is mainly offered as a required course with 2 credits,while Geriatric Nursing,Rehabilitation Nursing and Health Education are provided as elective courses with fewer credits.Around half of the institutions have practice hours for Community Nursing,Geriatric Nursing and Rehabilitation Nursing courses.However,the proportion of practice hours in the courses is generally less than 50%.The teaching content focuses on clinical care competencies instead of complementary competencies.Conclusion:It was revealed that CHN education in China is still in its infancy from website information of colleges and universities.CHN courses should be included in curriculum design,and teaching reforms and innovations should be taken to prepare nursing students to practice in primary health care and community settings.

Design and Implementation of Baccalaureate Grade Processing Web Application for Niger

In this work, we have developed a web application for Baccalaureate grades processing in Niger. This online application allows to replace Excel based manual grades processing with fully automated one. Thus, the application helps to minimize the errors caused by the Excel manipulation. It also allows rapid centralization of all results at the exam service level. For the development, we adopted the agile method. This method is very efficient in allowing us to prioritize our real needs and the application is enriched as these needs arise. For the design, we used the UML Modeling language and for the implementation, we used a number of computer tools such as PHP, JavaScript, HTML, Jquery, AJAX, Bootstrap and CSS.

Translation and psychometric validation of the Korean version of the academic nurse self-efficacy scale for Korean bachelor-level nursing students

Objective:This study aimed to translate the Academic Nurse Self-Efficacy scale(ANSE),assess its appropriateness for use in Korean nursing students,and evaluate the Korean Version of the Academic Nurse Self-Efficacy scale’s(K-ANSE)validity and reliability.Methods:The data of 444 nursing college students at 10 universities across the country were collected from November 1,2020 to June 8,2021.The K-ANSE was analyzed utilizing SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 25.0 programs.The K-ANSE’s content validity,construct validity,convergent/discriminant validity,criterion-related validity,and reliability were evaluated.Results:Internal emotion management,auto-regulatory behavior,external emotion management,and sociality were established.The Cronbach’sαfor the overall scale was 0.87,and that of the 4 subscales ranged from 0.70 to 0.89.Conclusions:The Korean version of the ANSE seems to be a valid and reliable instrument to measure Korean bachelor-level nursing students.

Analysis of adversity quotient of nursing students in Macao:A crosssection and correlation study

Objectives: To investigate the adversity quotient (AQ) of Macao undergraduate nursing students and analyse its influencing factors.Methods:A cross-section design was used,and a convenience sample of nursing students(n=158 valid)was selected from a tertiary institute in Macao.In addition to demographic questions,the Chinese versions of the Adversity Quotient Scale,the Emotional Intelligence(EI)Scale,the Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire and the Parenting Styles Scale were used to assess the students'characteristics.Results:The average AQ score of the students was 116.72±11.39.AQ scores were negatively correlated with coping-negative,and maternal style(excessive interference,excessive protection)(r=-0.332,P<0.001;r=-0.167,P=0.036).Coping-negative entered the regression equation(F=19.154,P<0.001).The female nursing students had higher scores in ownership dimension of AQ than their male counterparts(31.98±3.26 vs.29.21±3.08,t=-4.442,P<0.001).Conclusions:The average AQ scores of Macao undergraduate nursing students were moderate.The female nursing students are more likely to attribute the cause of adversity to themselves,and specific psychosocial and cultural issues may be at play.There is a necessity for Macao nursing students to improve their ability to overcome setbacks.Special attention should be paid to the cultivation of students'positive coping styles.

Factors associated with nursing students' willingness to care for older adults in Korea and the United States

Objective: Elderly health care needs increase and nurses' role for elderlies is vital.It is significant to identify nursing students' intention to care for elderlies.Thus,this study investigated nursing students' willingness to care for elderlies in Korea and the United States.Methods: The study was conducted with 437 undergraduate nursing students from Korea and the United States from May 25 to 31,2018.Participants completed a survey including frequency and quality of contact,anxiety about aging,empathy,attitude toward elderly,and willingness to care.Results: Study findings from the entire group showed that nursing students' willingness to care for the elderly was positively associated with contact quality (β =0.22,P<0.001) and empathy (β =0.12,P 0.009) but negatively associated with anxiety about aging (β =0.23,P < 0.001) and attitude toward the elderly (β =0.14,P =0.004).Contact quality (β=0.30,P < 0.001) was positively associated with the willingness to care in Korean students,whereas extended family living type (β =-0.15,P=0.012) and attitude toward the elderly (β =-0.18,P=0.005) negatively associated in US students.Conclusion: This study suggested that nursing educators reinforce contact quality and empathy but reduce anxiety about aging and attitude toward elderly to enhance future nurses' care quality.

Self-directed learning readiness and nursing competency among undergraduate nursing students in Fujian province of China

Aims:We examined the relationship between self-directed learning readiness(SDLR)and nursing competency among undergraduate nursing students.Background:There is little evidence-based data related to the relationship between selfdirected learning(SDL)and nursing competency.Methods:A descriptive correlational design was used.We conducted convenience sampling of 519 undergraduate nursing students from three universities during their final period of clinical practice.We investigated SDL according to the SDLR scale for nursing education(Chinese translation version),and used the Competency Inventory for Registered Nurses to evaluate nursing competency.Results:The mean SDLR score of the students was 148.55(standard deviation[SD]18.46),indicating intermediate and higher SDLR.The mean score for nursing competency was 142.31(SD30.39),indicating intermediate nursing competence.SDLR had a significant positive and strong relationship with nursing competency.Conclusion:SDLR is a predictor of nursing competency.

Application of nursing core competency standard education in the training of nursing undergraduates

Purpose:To evaluate the effectiveness of nursing core competency standard education in undergraduate nursing training.Methods:Forty-two nursing undergraduates from the class of 2007 were recruited as the control group receiving conventional teaching methods,while 31 students from the class of 2008 were recruited as the experimental group receiving nursing core competency standard education.Teaching outcomes were evaluated using comprehensive theoretical knowledge examination and objective structured clinical examination.Results:The performance in the health information collection,physical assessment,scenario simulation and communication in the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group(p<0.05).Conclusions:Nursing core competency standard education is helpful for the training of nursing students'core competencies.

Relationship of academic courses and clinical internships to performance on the National Qualified Examination for Registered Professional Nurses (NQEX-RPN)

Background:Success in the National Qualified Examination for Registered Professional Nurses(NQEX-RPN)is a critical issue for each nursing student and every nursing school.However,to date,little research has been conducted regarding the degree of risk for licensure failure associated with specific academic courses and clinical internships in China's Mainland.Objective:This study aimed to explore the relationship of academic courses and clinical internships to performance on the NQEX-RPN in China's Mainland.Methods:This was a retrospective descriptive study.Two hundred twenty-eight new graduates were recruited froma four-year baccalaureate nursing programin China's Mainland.The scores of academic courses and clinical internships were recorded from the Teaching and Learning administration of the university.The NQEX-RPN performance data was collected from the Provincial Health Department.Personal information was collected from the participants.Multiple stepwise regression was used to identify predictors of the NQEX-RPN.Results:Twenty-three courses and four clinical internships were positively associated with NQEX-RPN performance.Surgical nursing,Medical nursing,Computer basics and Community health care explained the 36.2%of the total variance of Theoretical Knowledge(F=31.313,p=0.000);clinical internships of obstetrics and gynecology nursing,pediatrics and surgical nursing explained the 28.1%of the total variance of Application Skills(F=28.852,p=0.000).Conclusion:Surgical-medicine nursing,Community health care,Computer basics and clinical internships are beneficial in assisting students and educators to identify the risk of students'performance in the NQEX-RPN.

Study of an evaluation index system of nursing undergraduate employability developed using the Delphi method

Purpose:To establish an evaluation index system of nursing undergraduate employability.Methods:Two-round expert consultation using the Delphi method and involving 26 nursing experts nationwide.Results:The usable response rates of the 2-round consultation were 89.7%and 100%in the first and second round,respectively.The specialist authority coefficient was 0.869 and the coordination coefficients were 0.205 and 0.212 for the first and second round,respectively,both were statistically different.The evaluation index system comprised four first-level indexes,13 second-level indexes,and 82 third-level items.Conclusion:High positivity representative of the consulted experts enabled the construction of a reliable index system that can be used as a reference for cultivating nursing undergraduate employability.

Experiences of graduates in Massachusetts of the United States from a RN-to-BSN program

Objective:To generate an understanding of the lived experiences of a shared central phenomenon of RN-to-BSN graduates and determine their perceptions of the value of their BSN degree.Methods:The data collection procedure was open-ended,semi-structured,which was consisted of one-on-one interviews with 12 nurses who are licensed in Massachusetts and who are graduates of RN-to-BSN programs.Results:The findings identified seven major emerging themes,a)job requirement,b)promotion,c)professional growth,d)personal growth,e)family obligations,f)time and energy,and h)compensation.The themes were incomparable through all emerging themes.Conclusions:The research data analysis supports the need for the non-BSN RNs to continue their education to the BSN level should be central for nurse executives in hiring positions to help non-BSN staff RNs interested in these positions to meet the BSN requirement for applying for jobs that they may qualify for,but do not possess the BSN degree.There was a definite connection between job requirement and promotion from all the research study participants.

The Status Quo of International Schools and Its Problems

International schools are not only the products of globalization that promote educational revolution,but also the process of promoting globalization that can cultivate international awareness,international thinking and international global citizenship of vision.The core of education internationalization is to cultivate talents with global vision and super-national understanding of inter national cooperation.However,in the rapid development of international schools,some problems inevitably arise.We analyze from three aspects:student problems;management problems and curriculum problems.

IB Teacher’s Professionality in China and School Curriculum Reform: The Research on the Various Academic Background Teachers’ Performances in IB Classroom

This study explores the expansion of International Baccalaureate(IB)education focusing on teacher’s professionality in China's Mainland.The increase of IB schools over the past ten years results from strategies aimed at insertion of the IB into national education markets and its adaptation to different national systems.There is also an unintended percolation of the IB worldview and activities within national curricula and policies.These strategies and mechanisms are uncovered by tracking the embeddedness of the global IB in national education systems.

Comparative Analysis of International School Education Evaluation Systems:A Case Study of the IB and A-Level

This paper presents a comparative analysis of the International Baccalaureate(IB)and the General Certificate of Education Advanced Level(A-Level),two international educational assessment systems.The study explores their similarities and differences in educational philosophy,curriculum design,assessment methods,and student experience.Findings indicate that the IB curriculum emphasizes holistic education and interdisciplinary learning,while the A-Level curriculum focuses more on subject depth and specialization.In terms of assessment methods,the IB combines internal and external evaluations,whereas the A-Level primarily relies on final examinations.Regarding student experience,IB students typically perceive a broader range of learning opportunities,while A-Level students gain in-depth knowledge in specific subject areas.The study offers valuable insights for educators and policymakers to improve educational practices and support the personalized development of students.
