Adsorption dynamics of ethane in two granular fixed beds and structured fixed beds with microfibrous composites was studied.5A zeolite membrane 5A/PSSF(paper-like sintered stainless steel fiber)and microfibrous entrapped activated carbon(MEAC)composites were prepared by wet layup papermaking/sintering technique and in-situ hydrothermal method.Microfibrous composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and N2 adsorption/desorption.Structured fixed beds were designed by filling granular adsorbents(5A zeolite or activated carbon)and microfibrous composites at the inlet and outlet of the beds, respectively.Effects of flow rate, bed height and structure on the breakthrough curves were investigated. The length of unused bed(LUB)was determined, and Yoon–Nelson model was used to fit the breakthrough curves. The experimental results showed ethane was effectively adsorbed on the granular adsorbents and microfibrous composites. Both composites could decrease the LUB values and enhance bed utilization. All breakthrough curves fitted well to Yoon–Nelson model, with correlation coefficient exceeding 0.89.The adsorption rate of ethane could be improved in the structured fixed beds, which showed an enhanced mass transfer efficiency for ethane adsorption.LUB values of structured fixed beds with 5A/PSSF composites were larger, the bed utilization values were lower, and the adsorption rate constants were higher than those with MEAC composites under the same conditions. 展开更多

Purpose–This method will become a new development trend in subgrade structure design for high speed railways.Design/methodology/approach–This paper summarizes the structural types and design methods of subgrade bed for high speed railways in China,Japan,France,Germany, the United States and other countries based on the study and analysis of existing literature and combined with the research results and practices of high speed railway subgrade engineering at home and abroad.Findings–It is found that in foreign countries, the layered reinforced structure is generally adopted for the subgrade bed of high speed railways, and the unified double-layer or multi-layer structure is adopted for the surface layer of subgrade bed, while the simple structure is adopted in China;in foreign countries, different inspection parameters are adopted to evaluate the compaction state of fillers according to their respective understanding and practice, while in China, compaction coefficient, subsoil coefficient and dynamic deformation modulus are adopted for such evaluation;in foreign countries, the subgrade top deformation control method, the subgrade bottom deformation control method, the subsurface fill strength control method are mainly adopted in subgrade bed structure design of high speed railways, while in China, dynamic deformation control of subgrade surface and dynamic strain control of subgrade bed bottom layer is adopted in the design. However, the cumulative deformation of subgrade caused by train cyclic vibration load is not considered in the existing design methods.Originality/value–This paper introduces a new subgrade structure design method based on whole-process dynamics analysis that meets subgrade functional requirements and is established on the basis of the existing research at home and abroad on prediction methods for cumulative deformation of subgrade soil. 展开更多

Bed structures in many mountain rivers provide additional resistance to the flow. A field experiment was conducted on debris flow deposits in the valley of the Jiangjiagou Ravine, a tributary of the Yangtze River in southwestern China, to study the evolution and distribution of bed structures and their relationship with environmental conditions. Water and sediment from the Jiangjiagou main stream were diverted into the experimental channel. Several hydrological schemes were adopted to scour the channel until equilibrium was reached. During this process the evolutions of bed structures and channel configuration were investigated. The results indicate that stronger bed structures mean greater stream power consumption, greater resistance, and greater slope in a certain section when rivers are in dynamic equilibrium. Thus, to some extent the longitudinal profiles of channels can be determined by the distribution of bed structures. In natural cases, the strength and evolution of bed structures are under the influence of environmental conditions such as discharge and bed-load transportation rate. That is, given the same conditions, the same bed structure distribution and longitudinal profile can be predicted. 展开更多

To better understand the evolution characteristics of bed porous structure during iron ore sintering,X-ray computed tomography scanning technology was used to analyze the pore parameters in different areas of the sintering bed.A pore skeleton structure model was established to study the characteristics of the airflow channels in different zones. The absolute permeability of different areas was calculated through simulation, and the corresponding streamline and pressure drop distribution were analyzed. The results show that the porosity of raw material zone,high-temperature zone, and sintered zone increases gradually, which are 37.69%,46.41%,and 55.57%,respectively.The absolute permeability calculation results of the raw material zone and sintered zones are 792.49μm^(2) and 20560.80μm^(2),while the tortuosity is 1.77 and 1.45,respectively.Compared with the raw material zone, the flow streamline in the sintered zone is thicker and denser, the airflow resistance and the pressure drop are minor. 展开更多

Based on three-dimensional (3D) acceleration sensing, an intelligent particle spy capable of detecting, transferring, and storing data, is proposed under the name of Particle Measurement Sensor (PMS). A prototype 60-mm-dia PMS was tested to track its freefall in terms of velocity and displacement, and served as a particle spy in a fluidized bed delivering the in situ acceleration information it detects. With increasing superficial gas velocity in the fluidized bed, the acceleration felt by PMS was observed to increase. The variance of the signals, which reflect the fluctuation, increased at first, reaching a maximum at the gas velocity (Uc) which marks the transition from bubbling to turbulent fluidization. Through probability density distribution (PDD) analysis, the PDD peak can be divided into the emulsion phase peak and the bubble phase peak. The average acceleration of emulsion and bubble phase increased, while the variance of both phases reached a maximum at Uc, at the same time. However, the difference between the variances of two phases reached the maximum at Uc. Findings of this study indicate that PMS can record independent in situ information. Further, it can provide other in situ measurements when equipped with additional multi-functional sensors. 展开更多

This work presents a review of the findings into the ability of a digitally based particle packing algorithm, called DigiPac, to predict bed structure in a variety of packed columns, for a range of generic pellet shapes frequently used in the chemical and process engineering industries. Resulting macroscopic properties are compared with experimental data derived from both invasive and non-destructive measurement techniques. Additionally, fluid velocity distributions, through samples of the resulting bed structures, are analysed using lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) simulations and are compared against experimental data from the literature. 展开更多

Carbon molecular sieve membrane(CMSM)/paper-like stainless steel fibers(PSSF)has been manufactured by pyrolyzing poly(fiirfuryl alcohol)(PFA)coated on the metal fibers.PFA was synthesized using oxalic acid dihydrate as a catalyst and coated on microfibers by dip coating method. For the purpose of investigating the effects of final carbonization temperature, the composites were carbonized between 400℃ and 800℃ under flowing nitrogen. The morphology and microstructure were examined by X-ray diffraction,Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis,N2 adsorption and desorption,Raman spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectra. The consequences of characterization showed that the CMSM containing mesopores o f 3.9 nm were manufactured. The specific surface area of the CMSM/PSSF fabricated in different pyrolysis temperature varies from 26.5 to 169.1 m^2·g^-1 and pore volume varies from 0.06 to 0.23 cm^3·g^-1.When pyrolysis temperature exceeds 600℃,the specific surface, pore diameter and pore volume decreased as carbonization temperature increased.Besides, the degree of graphitization in carbon matrix increased with rising pyrolysis temperature.Toluene adsorption experiments on different structured fixed bed that was padded by CMSM/PSSF and granular activated carbon(GAC)were conducted. For the sake of comparison, adsorption test was also performed on fixed bed packed with GAC.The experimental results indicated that the rate constant κ′ was dramatically increased as the proportion of CMCM/PSSF composites increased on the basis of Yoon-Nelson model, which suggested that structured fixed bed padded with CMSM/PSSF composite offered higher adsorption rate and mass transfer efficiency. 展开更多

The behavior of the solid phase in the upper zone of a circulating fluidized bed riser was studied using a phase Doppler anemometer. Glass particles of mean diameter 107μm and superficial gas velocities UE covering the turbulent and the beginning of the fast fluidization regime were investigated. Three static bed heights were tested. Ascending and descending particles were found co-existing under all oper ating conditions tested, and at all measurement locations. Superficial gas velocity proved/happened to have a larger effect on descending particles at the wall and on ascending particles in the central region. Transversal particle velocities in both directions (toward the center and toward the wall) behaved rela- tively equivalently, with only slight difference observed at the wall. However, observation of the number of particles moving in either transversal direction showed a change in bed structure when increasing Ug. Furthermore, a balance was constantly observed between the core zone and the annulus zone where the mutual mass transfer between these two zones occurred continuously. Transition from a slow to a fast particle motion was accompanied by a transition to high levels of velocity fluctuations, and was found corresponding to the appearance of significant solid particle flow rate. 展开更多
