The in-plane tensile behaviors of bi-axial warp-knitted(BWK) composites under quasi-static and high strain rates loading were experimentally analyzed in this article. The tensile tests were conducted along warp direction( 0°) and weft direction( 90°) at quasi-static rate of 0. 001 s^(-1) and high strain rates ranging from 1 450 to 2 540 s^(-1),respectively. It is found that the significant strain rate sensitivity can be observed in the stress-strain curves of BWK composites. The fracture morphologies of BWK composites demonstrate that the tensile failure modes are shear failure and fiber breakage under the quasi-static testing condition while interface failure and fibers pullout are at high strain rates. 展开更多

This paper presents a new 3D mesoscopic model of ultra-high performance cement-based composite(UHPCC)to investigate its dynamic tensile behavior. In this model, the UHPCC is regarded as a two-phase material composed of cementitious matrix and randomly distributed fibers. The model is established using the commercial software LS-DYNA and involves generating the randomly distributed fiber elements with considerations of diameter, length, orientation and volume fraction, and then fully constraining them with the matrix. In particular,to capture the slipping effect between fibers and matrix that has a strong influence on the dynamic tensile behavior, the fibers are modelled by a fictitious material represented by the load-slip relation. The strain-rate effect of slipping force neglected in most of previous studies is considered by calibrating constitutive parameters of the fictitious material under different strain-rates based on the single fiber pullout tests. Finally, the 3D mesoscopic model is validated against three sets of tension-dominated experiments covered a wide range of loading intensity.Numerical predictions demonstrate that strain-rate effect of slipping force must be considered, and the neglect of it may lead to a great underestimation of the dynamic tensile strength of UHPCC material and would unavoidably underestimate the blast resistance of UHPCC components. 展开更多

To investigate the effect of different environmental conditions of GFRP bars in concrete beams with work cracks subjected to sustained loads, the beams were exposed in indoor, freeze/thaw cycles and immersed in alkaline solution at elevated temperature. The bars were carefully extracted from the beams and tested in order to evaluate residual tensile properties. The results show that the tensile strength decreased significantly in the highly aggressive conditions but not in the natural conditions. The effect of GFRP bars casting in concrete beams demonstrated approximately 2.5% decrease of tensile strength caused by pore water environment in concrete beams on basis of those of the original bars. The effect of sustained loading plus work cracks demonstrated about 10.5% tensile strength decrease on basis of those of the bars only casted in concrete beams. The effect of environments under sustained loading plus work cracks demonstrated about 17% tensile strength decrease caused by a saturated solution of Ca(OH)2 and 60-2 ℃ tap water (pH=12-13) and about 8% tensile strength decrease caused by freezing and thawing cycle (F/T), both on basis of those of the bars of the indoor beams only under sustained loading plus work cracks. The results demonstrate the effects of the tensile strengths under different environmental conditions of GFRP bars in concrete beams with work cracks subjected to sustained loads. 展开更多

The functional relation between the residual tensile strength of plain concrete and number of cycles was determined. 99 tappered prism specimens of plain concrete were tested under uniaxial tensile fatigue loading. Based on the probability distribution of the residual tensile strength, the empirical expressions of the residual tensile strength corresponding to the number of cycles were obtained. The residual tensile strength attenuating curves can be used to predict the residual fatigue life of the specimen under variable-amplitude fatigue loading. There is a good correlation between residual tensile strength and residual secant elastic modulus. The relationship between the residual secant elastic modulus and number of cycles was also established. 展开更多

By measuring and analyzing infrared thermal image of the specimen in static load tensile test process, it was studied that the influence of the undercut defects and double-sided dressing method on the deformation behavior of the laser welded joint specimens of TC4 titanium alloy. The results showed that for the unmodified specimens, the yield phenomenon occurs first in the region of the joint, but the undercut value has an effect on the stress and strain of starting to yield phenomenon, and a great effect on the plastic deformation behavior. When the undercut is less than a certain value, the large plastic deformation occurs in the base metal region and the plasticity of the specimen is comparable to that of the base metal, but the larger undercut defect results in a concentrated plastic deformation in the joint region and rapidly failed in this region. But the double-sided dressing specimen is significantly different. The physical yield is no longer concentrated in the joint region, but at the same time occurs in the several regions including joint and the base metal. And the plastic deformation mainly occurs in the base material area, similar to that of the base material. 展开更多

The mechanical properties of copper nanocubes by molecular dynamics are investigated in this paper. The [100], [110], [111] nanocubes are created, and their energies, yield stresses, hydrostatic stresses, Mises stresses, and the relation- ships between them and strain are analyzed. Some concepts of the microscopic damage mechanics are introduced, which are the basis of studying the damage mechanical properties by molecular dynamics. The [100] nanocube exhibits homo- geneity and isotropy and achieves a balance easily. The [110] nanocube presents transverse isotropy. The [111] nanocube shows the complexity and anisotropy because the orientation sizes in three directions are different. The broken point occurs on a surface, but the other two do not. The [100] orientation model will be an ideal model for studying the microscopic damage theory. 展开更多

This study reports the investigation of the thermomechanical behavior of aluminum alloys (AI-1060, A1-6061, and A1-7075) under the combined action of tensile loading and laser irradiations. The continuous wave ytterbium fiber laser (wavelength 1080 nm) was employed as the irradiation source, while tensile loading was provided by the tensile testing machine. The effects of various pre-loading and laser power densities on the failure time, temperature distribution, and the deformation behavior of aluminum alloys are analyzed. The experimental results represent the significant reduction in failure time for higher laser power densities and for high preloading values, which implies that preloading may contribute a significant role in the failure of the material at elevated temperature. Fracture on a microscopic scale was predominantly ductile comprising micro-void nucleation, growth, and coalescence. The AI-1060 specimens behaved plastically to some extent, while A1-6061 and A1-7075 specimens experienced catastrophic failure. The reason and characterization of ma- terial failure by tensile and laser loading are explored in detail. A comparative behavior of under-tested materials is also investigated. This work suggests that studies considering only combined loading are not enough to fully understand the mechanical behavior of under-tested materials. For complete characterization, one should consider the effect of heating as well as loading rate and the corresponding involved processes with the help of thermomechanical coupling and the thermal elastic-plastic theory. 展开更多

The mechanical behavior of rock under uniaxial tensile loading is different from that of rock under compressive loads. A micromechanics-based model was proposed for mesoscopic heterogeneous brittle rock undergoing irreversible changes of their microscopic structures due to microcrack growth. The complete stress-strain relation including linear elasticity, nonlinear hardening, rapid stress drop and strain softening was obtained. The influence of all microcracks with different sizes and orientations were introduced into the constitutive relation by using the probability density function describing the distribution of orientations and the probability density function describing the distribution of sizes. The influence of Weibull distribution describing the distribution of orientations and Rayleigh function describing the distribution of sizes on the constitutive relation were researched. Theoretical predictions have shown to be consistent with the experimental results. 展开更多

In vitro cell loading experiments are used to investigate stimulation of strain to cellular proliferation. As the flowing conditions of culture fluid in loading systems has been little known, strictly people can not detect the influence of strain to cellular proliferation exactly because shear flow can enhance cell proliferation either. Based on the working principle and cyclic loading parameters, we simplify Navier-Stokes equation to describe the flow of culture fluid on substrates of uniaxial and equi-biaxial flat tensile loading systems and four point bending system. With approximate solutions, the distributions of velocity field and wall shear flow to cells are gained. Results show: shear flows are zero in the middle (or fixed point or line) of substrate for all systems, and they get larger proportionally to distance from middle and substrate elongate; the shear flow on the substrate of four point bending system is much greater than those of others. This shear flow in four point bending system, confirmed by Owan, I., et al with OPN mRNA increase in their experiment, could cause more influence to osteoblast-like cells than that caused by strain. We estimate the average magnitude of shear stress in Owan’s device, the results are consistent with other experimental data about shear flow. In conclusion our study makes it possible to differentiate the influence of strain on cellular proliferation to that of shear flow in loading experiments with the devices mentioned above quantitatively. 展开更多

Tensile failure(spalling or slabbing)often occurs on the sidewall of deep tunnel, which is closely related to the coupled stress state of deep rock mass under high pre-static load and dynamic disturbance. To reveal the mechanism of rock tensile failure caused by this coupled stress mode, the Brazilian disc tests were carried on red sandstone under high pre-static load induced by dynamic disturbance.Based on the pure static tensile fracture load of red sandstone specimen, two static load levels(80%and 90%of the pure static tensile fracture load)were selected as the initial high pre-static loading state, and then the dynamic disturbance load was applied until the rock specimen was destroyed. The dynamic disturbance loading mode adopted a sinusoidal wave(sine-wave)load,and the loading wave amplitude was 20%and 10%of the pure static tensile fracture load, respectively. The dynamic disturbance frequencies were set to 1,10,20,30,40,and 50 Hz.The results show that the tensile failure strength and peak displacement of red sandstone specimens under coupled load actions are lower than those under pure static tensile load, and both parameters decrease significantly with the increase of dynamic disturbance frequency. With the increase of dynamic disturbance frequency, the decrease range of tensile strength of red sandstone increased from 3.3%to 9.4%when the pre-static load level is 80%.While when the pre-static load level is 90%,the decrease range will increase from 7.4%to 11.6%.This weakening effect of tensile strength shows that the deep surrounding rock is more likely to fail under the coupled load actions of pre-static load and dynamic disturbance. In this tensile failure mechanism of the deep surrounding rock, the stress environment of deep sidewall rock determines that the failure mode of rock is a tensile failure, the pre-static load level dominates the tensile failure strength of surrounding rock, and dynamic disturbance promotes the strength-weakening effect and affects the weakening range. 展开更多

In this paper, the fabrication and investigation of flexible impedance and capacitive tensile load sensors based on carbon nanotube(CNT) composite are reported. On thin rubber substrates, CNTs are deposited from suspension in water and pressed at elevated temperature. It is found that the fabricated load cells are highly sensitive to the applied mechanical force with good repeatability. The increase in impedance of the cells is observed to be 2.0 times while the decrease in the capacitance is found to be 2.1 times as applied force increases up to 0.3 N. The average impedance and capacitive sensitivity of the cell are equal to 3.4 N^(-1) and 1.8 N^(-1), respectively. Experimental results are compared with the simulated values, and they show that they are in reasonable agreement with each other. 展开更多

The effect of cathodic hydrogen charging on the tensile and constant load properties was deter- mined for an austenitic stainless steel weldment comprising a 304L steel in the solution treated condition as a base metal and a 308L filler steel as a weld metal. Part of the 304L solution treated steel was separately given additional sensitization treatment to simulate the microstructure that would develop in the heat affected zone. Tests were performed at room temperature on notched round bar specimens. Hydrogen charging resulted in a pronounced embrittlement of the tested materials. This was manifested mainly as a considerable loss in the ductility of tensile specimens and a decrease in the time to failure and threshold stress of constant load specimens. The 308L weld metal exhibited the highest, and the 304L solution treated steel the lowest, resistance to hydrogen embrittlement. Hydrogen embrittlement was associated with the formation of strain induced martensite as well as a transition from brittle to ductile fracture morphology onwards the centre of the specimens. 展开更多

For brittle materials, the tensile strength plays an important role in mechanical analyses and engineering applications. Although quasi-static direct and dynamic indirect tensile strength testing methods have already been developed for rocks, the dynamic direct pull test is still necessary to accurately determine the tensile strength of rocks. In this paper, a Kolsky tension bar system is developed for measuring the dynamic direct tensile strength of rocks. A dumbbell-shaped sample is adopted and attached to the bars using epoxy glue. The pulse shaping technique is utilized to eliminate the inertial effect of samples during test. The single pulse loading technique is developed for the effective microstructure analyses of tested samples. Two absorption devices are successfully utilized to reduce the reflection of waves in the incident bar and transmitted bar, respectively. Laurentian granite (LG) is tested to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method. The tensile strength of LG increases with the loading rate. Furthermore, the nominal surface energy of LG is measured, which also increases with the loading rate. 展开更多

To study the tensile strength and failure mechanisms of rock with hydro-thermal coupling damage under different loading rates,a series of static and dynamic splitting tests were conducted on thermally treated sandstone under dry and water-saturated conditions.Experimental results showed that high temperatures effectively weakened the tensile strength of sandstone specimens, and the P-wave velocity declined with increasing temperature.Overall, thermal damage of rock increased gradually with increasing temperature, but obvious negative damage appeared at the temperature of 100℃.The water-saturated sandstone specimens had lower indirect tensile strength than the dry ones, which indicated that water-rock interaction led to secondary damage in heat-treated rock.Under both dry and water-saturated conditions, the dynamic tensile strength of sandstone increased with the increase of strain rate. The water-saturated rock specimens showed stronger rate dependence than the dry ones, but the loading rate sensitivity of thermally treated rock decreased with increasing treatment temperature. With the help of scanning electron microscopy technology, the thermal fractures of rock, caused by extreme temperature, were analyzed.Hydro-physical mechanisms of sandstone under different loading rate conditions after heat treatment were further discussed. 展开更多

This paper proposes a theoretical method that can be used in calculating the stability of coral reefs or artificial islands. In this work,we employ the variational limiting equilibrium procedure to theoretically determine the slope stability of coral reefs covered with hard reef shells as a result of horizontal wave loads.A reasonable functional is proposed and its extremum is calculated based on the conservation of energy. Then,we deduce the stability factor Ns of coral reefs under combined vertical self-gravity and horizontal wave loads, which is consistent with the published results. We compare some classic examples of homogeneous slopes without hard shells in order to analyze the accuracy of results generated by this variational procedure. The variational results are accurate and reliable according to the results of a series of detailed calculations and comparisons.Simultaneously, some other influence parameters on the reef stability, including the top-layer tensile strength of coral reef, the amplitude of wave loading, and the tensile crack, are calculated and discussed in detail. The analysis results reveal that the existence of a hard reef shell could enhance the stability of reef slope and that there is a nonlinear relationship between the stability factor Ns,the shear strength, and the thickness Ds of the covered coral reef shell.Furthermore, the emergence of top-layer tensile cracks on the coral reefs reduces their stability, and the action of horizontal wave loads greatly decreases the stability of coral reefs. Thus, the hard shell strength and its thickness Ds,surface tensile crack, and wave loading require more careful attention in the field of practical engineering. 展开更多

Lithium-ion batteries suffer from mechano–electrochemical coupling problems that directly determine the battery life. In this paper, we investigate the electrode electrochemical performance under stress conditions, where seven tensile/compressive stresses are designed and loaded on electrodes, thereby decoupling mechanics and electrochemistry through incremental stress loads. Four types of multi-group electrochemical tests under tensile/compressive stress loading and normal package loading are performed to quantitatively characterize the effects of tensile stress and compressive stress on cycle performance and the kinetic performance of a silicon composite electrode. Experiments show that a tensile stress improves the electrochemical performance of a silicon composite electrode, exhibiting increased specific capacity and capacity retention rate, reduced energy dissipation rate and impedances, enhanced reactivity, accelerated ion/electron migration and diffusion, and reduced polarization. Contrarily, a compressive stress has the opposite effect, inhibiting the electrochemical performance. The stress effect is nonlinear, and a more obvious suppression via compressive stress is observed than an enhancement via tensile stress. For example, a tensile stress of 675 k Pa increases diffusion coefficient by 32.5%, while a compressive stress reduces it by 35%. Based on the experimental results, the stress regulation mechanism is analyzed. Tensile stress loads increase the pores of the electrode material microstructure, providing more deformation spaces and ion/electron transport channels. This relieves contact compressive stress, strengthens diffusion/reaction, and reduces the degree of damage and energy dissipation. Thus, the essence of stress enhancement is that it improves and optimizes diffusion, reaction and stress in the microstructure of electrode material as well as their interactions via physical morphology. 展开更多

Jute fiber (woven fabric, 1 × 1 plain weave) reinforced polypropylene matrix composites were prepared by compression molding with various fiber loading such as 30%, 40%, 46%, 50%, 55% by weight. The mechanical properties such as tensile strength (TS), bending strength (BS), tensile modulus (TM), bending modulus (BM) and impact strength (IS) of the composite were assessed and analyzed. The highest value of TS, BS, TM, BM and IS were 68.1 MPa, 94.1 MPa, 2936 MPa, 4831 MPa and 14.5 kJ/m2 respectively with 50% fiber loading by weight. It was found that the mechanical properties of the composites were increased with the increase in jute fiber content up to 50% by weight;however, further increase in fiber loading the value decreased. On the basis of fiber content, 50% fiber reinforced composites had the optimum set of mechanical properties. Initially the water absorption rate was higher and then it became slower and static with time. Chemical ageing test with various chemical media such as H2O2, NaOH, HCl and NaCl were performed up to 168 hours. This study comparatively evaluated the flexural performance and deformation characteristics of concrete elements reinforced with bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris), rattan (Calamuc deerratus) and the twisted steel rebars. The yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and the elongation of 50 specimens of the three materials were determined using a universal testing machine. Three beams of concrete strength 20 N/mm2 at age 28 days were separately reinforced with bamboo, rattan and steel bars of same percentage, while the stirrups were essentially mild steel bars. The beams were subjected to centre-point flexural loading according to BS 1881 to evaluate the flexural behaviour. The YS of bamboo and rattan bars were 13% and 45% of that of steel respectively, while their UTS were 16% and 62% of that of steel in the same order. The elongation of bamboo, rattan and steel were 7.42%, 10% and 14.7% respectively. The natural rebars were less than the 12% minimum requirement of BS 4449. The load-deflection plots of bamboo and steel RC beams were quadratic, while rattan RC beams had curvilinear trend. The stiffness of bamboo RC beams (BB) and rattan RC beams (RB) were 32% and 13.5% of the stiffness of steel RC beams (SB). The post-first crack residual flexural strength was 41% for BB and SB, while RB was 25%. Moreover, the moment capacities of BB and RB corresponded to 51% and 21% respectively of the capacity of steel RC beams. The remarkable gap between the flexural capacities of the natural rebars and that of steel can be traced not only to the tensile strength but also the weak bonding at the bar-concrete interface. It can be concluded that the bamboo bars are suitable rebars for non-load bearing and lightweight RC flexural structures, while more pre-strengthening treatment is required more importantly for rattan for improved interfacial bonding and load-carrying capacity. 展开更多
