Neodymium(Nd)is one of the most famous members of rare earth elements family. With the increasing global demand for Nd,it can inevitably enter the environment and affect the ecological environment through the food chain and other ways. Therefore,it is very important to study the biological effects of Nd.In this study, the biological effects of 3 kinds of Nd compounds,i.e.neodymium oxide(Nd_(2)O_(3)),neodymium chloride(NdCl3)and neodymium nitrate(Nd(NO_(3))_(3)),were evaluated by using silkworm models through the method of intravascular injection. Each of the three Nd compounds was prepared into 6 groups at different concentrations(40,50,60,70,80,90μg/μL).The results show that within the certain concentration range,Nd compounds show great damage to the growth of silkworms since high death rate is observed:the death rate from Nd2 O3 group is floating between 30%and 80%,the one from NdCl3 group is between 17%and 33%and that from Nd(NO3)3 group is between 23%and 37%.It also reveals that Nd compounds have some negative effects on the body length and weight of silkworms. However, the histophysiological study shows that the three Nd compounds cause no obvious negative effects on the cell morphologies in midgut, fat body and silk gland. The XRD and FTIR spectra show that the secondary and the crystalline structures of silks are not destroyed, the TGA and DTG data exhibit that the thermal stability of silks is not damaged, and the tensile test shows that the mechanical properties of silks are not affected significantly by the intake of Nd compounds. In general, the intake of Nd compounds has significant inhibitory effects on silkworm growth but little negative impact on silk structures or cell morphology, the study can provide useful toxicological data for the safe application of Nd compounds in various fields. 展开更多

Field cultivation experiments on white sesame(Sesamum indicum L.)seeds implanted with low-energy C ion showed that different dosages of C ion implantation pro-duce different biological effects.Sesame plants in 6 different dosage groups with C ion density respectively at 1×10^(11),1×10^(12),1×10^(15),5×10^(15),1×10^(16),5×10^(16)ion/cm2 were superior to the control group in plant height, leaf number, stalk diameter and leaf size.Further, sesame plants in these groups flower and seed earlier than those in the control group, and single plant yield also increased.Of all the groups, the 5×10^(15)ion/cm2 dosage group yielded the best effect, whereas the 1×10^(17)/cm^(2)dosage group showed an evident inhibitory effect of ion implantation on the germination and growth of the sesame seeds. 展开更多

Currently, the wastewater treatment plants(WWTPs)attempt to achieve the shifting from general pollution parameters control to reduction of organic micropollutants discharge. However, they have not been able to satisfy the increasing ecological safety needs. In this study, the removal of micropollutants was investigated, and the ecological safety was assessed for a local WWTP.Although the total concentration of 31 micropollutants detected was reduced by 83%using the traditional biological treatment processes, the results did not reflect chemicals that had poor removal efficiencies and low concentrations.Of the five categories of micropollutants, herbicides, insecticides, and bactericides were difficult to remove, pharmaceuticals and UV filters were effectively eliminated. The specific photosynthesis inhibition effect and non-specific bioluminescence inhibition effect from wastewater were detected and evaluated using hazardous concentration where 5%of aquatic organisms are affected. The photosynthesis inhibition effect from wastewater in the WWTP was negligible, even the untreated raw wastewater. However, the bioluminescence inhibition effect from wastewater which was defined as the priority biological effect, posed potential ecological risk.To decrease non-specific biological effects, especially of macromolecular dissolved organic matter, overall pollutant reduction strategy is necessary.Meanwhile, the ozonation process was used to further decrease the bioluminescence inhibition effects from the secondary effluent;≥0.34 g O 3/g DOC of ozone dose was recommended for micropollutants elimination control and ecological safety. 展开更多

To explore the possibility to employ 99m Tc MIBI to monitor biological response of tumor cells after irradiation and to observe the relation between the radiation doses and the uptake levels of 99m Tc MIBI in tumor cells, the cells were irradiated with a single dose of 2 Gy, 10 Gy and 20 Gy respectively. The uptake of 99m Tc MIBI in each dosage group was determined before and 24, 48, 72 h after irradiation respectively. Apoptosis index , plating efficiency of tumor cells was simultaneously determined. There was a positive correlation between uptake levels of 99m Tc MIBI and AI. A negative correlation was noted between the uptake levels and PE . It is suggested that 99m Tc MIBI may be used as a tracer to monitor the change of viability state of tumor cells after being irradiated with different doses. 展开更多

The biologically-effective-dose of tolpyralate, a new 4-hydroxyphenyl-pyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD)-inhibitor, applied alone or tank-mixed with atrazine, for the control of multiple-herbicide-resistant (MHR) waterhemp [<em>Amaranthus tuberculatus</em> (Moq.) J. D. Sauer] has not been studied in corn. Seven field experiments were conducted during a three-year period (2018, 2019, 2020) in Ontario, Canada with MHR waterhemp to determine: 1) the dose-response of MHR waterhemp to tolpyralate and tolpyralate plus atrazine, and 2) the relative efficacy of tolpyralate and tolpyralate plus atrazine to post-emergence corn herbicides, dicamba/atrazine (500/1000 g<span style="white-space:nowrap;">&#183;</span>ha<span style="white-space:nowrap;">&#8722;</span>1) and mesotrione + atrazine (100 + 280 g<span style="white-space:nowrap;">&#183;</span>ha<span style="white-space:nowrap;">&#8722;</span>1). Tolpyralate + atrazine (120 + 4000 g<span style="white-space:nowrap;">&#183;</span>ha<span style="white-space:nowrap;">&#8722;</span>1) caused 13% corn injury at one site two weeks after application (WAA), which was observed as transient foliar chlorosis and bleaching of new leaves. At 12 WAA, the predicted dose of tolpyralate for 50% control of MHR waterhemp at Cottam and on Walpole Island was 8 and 2 g<span style="white-space:nowrap;">&#183;</span>ha<span style="white-space:nowrap;">&#8722;</span>1, respectively;the predicted dose of tolpyralate + atrazine for 50% control of MHR waterhemp at Cottam and on Walpole Island was 5 + 160 and 1 + 21 g<span style="white-space:nowrap;">&#183;</span>ha<span style="white-space:nowrap;">&#8722;</span>1, respectively. The difference in predicted dose at the two sites is likely due to differences in MHR density and resistance profile. Applied at the registered rate, tolpyralate (30 g<span style="white-space:nowrap;">&#183;</span>ha<span style="white-space:nowrap;">&#8722;</span>1) and tolpyralate + atrazine (30 + 1000 g<span style="white-space:nowrap;">&#183;</span>ha<span style="white-space:nowrap;">&#8722;</span>1) controlled MHR waterhemp similar to dicamba/atrazine and mesotrione + atrazine across sites. This study demonstrates that tolpyralate + atrazine, applied POST, provides season-long control of MHR waterhemp in corn. 展开更多

Graphene materials can emit far-infrared ray, but the biological effects of graphene far-infrared ray have not been studied. Furthermore, the non-thermal biological effect of far-infrared ray on organism has not been systematically studied independently of the thermal effect. The purpose of this study was to investigate the non-thermal biological effect of graphene far-infrared ray (gFIR) on Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells. In this work, stringent control of the cultivation conditions was carried out to ensure the stability and constancy of the culture and its temperature. Flow cytometry was used to detect the non-thermal effect of gFIR irradiation on cell membrane permeability, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) content. Compared with the control group, cell membrane permeability of the gFIR exposure cells decreased by 4.7%, MMP increased by 16% and intracellular ROS reduced by 10.7%. The results revealed the valuable features of the non-thermal biological effect of gFIR on Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells, and the further analysis demonstrated that graphene far-infrared materials should have great application value in disease prevention and health promotion. 展开更多

In order to evaluate the electromagnetic environment of 5G base station, measurement and evaluation of the electromagnetic environment are studied. The 12 measuring points are chosen on the roof, inside and outside of the building, which has a 5G base station on the top. The electric field intensity, magnetic field intensity, and power density have been measured. The measurement methods include background measurement and work measurement. Background measurement is the measurement of environmental electromagnetic field (EMF) before the installation of 5G base station while the working measurement is the measurement after the installation of 5G base station. The evaluation methods include t-test for qualitative evaluation and electromagnetic gain for quantitative evaluation. The results show that the electromagnetic environment after the installation of 5G base station in most places is different from that in the background. And the environmental electromagnetic fields in certain parts are lower than those in the background. The conclusions are as follows: 1) The electromagnetic environment of 5G base station is far lower than the control limit of the national standard and conforms to the national standard;2) The electromagnetic environment of 5G base station has little impact on the electromagnetic environment;3) It is not sufficient to assume that 5G is harmful to health without the results of the epidemiological investigation;4) Before the construction of 5G base station, do background EMF detection, which can provide support for future evaluation. 展开更多

The electric field stress applied to the cell in the electric field will cause the biological effects of the cell on electromagnetic field. In this paper, the single-shell spherical cell is equated to dielectric spheres, and a biophysical method is used to solve the boundary value problem, and then Maxwell tensor analysis is used to discuss the electric field stresses affecting the applied electric field applied to the cells. The results of numerical analysis show that the ion mobility decreases nonlinearly with increasing frequency in the lower region of the applied electric field frequency, and increases with increasing equivalent dielectric constant at a certain frequency, and the magnitude of the electric field stress is almost independent of the frequency;as the frequency increases, the ion mobility tends to a minimum value and is almost independent of the equivalent dielectric constant, while the applied electric field frequency and the cell dielectric constant both affect the cell normal and the tangential stresses. Therefore, the frequency applied electric field and cell dielectric constant affect the extracellular ion mobility, electric field stress applied to the cell membrane by the electric field;the extracellular ion mobility caused by the electric field in the low frequency range is more pronounced than that in the high frequency, and electric field stress is the basic cause of cell deformation. 展开更多

Immunotherapy is playing an increasingly important role in the treatment of tumors.Different from the traditional direct killing or excision therapies, immunotherapy depends on autologous immunity to kill tumor cells and tissues by activating or enhancing the body's immune system.Large numbers of recent studies suggest that low-frequency HIFU can not only enhance the intensity of the body's anti-cancer immune response, but also improve the efficiency of immunotherapy drug delivery to strengthen the effects of tumor immunotherapy. The focused ultrasound(FUS)destructs the tumor and simultaneously generates tumor debris and tumor-associated antigens, which enhances the immunogenicity of the tumor and stimulates the immune cells, inducing the body's immune response.Microbubbles are clinically used as a contrast. As a matter of fact, the addition of microbubbles can reinforce the destructive effect of FUS on the tumor and activate a stronger immune response. The combined application of ultrasound and microbubbles can more effectively open the blood brain barrier(BBB),which is beneficial to improving the intake of immune cells or immunotherapy drugs and exerting a positive influence in the lesion area.Currently, microbubbles and nanoparticles are commonly used as gene and drug carriers.Using ultrasound, the immune-related gene or antigen delivery itself can enhance the immune response and improve the efficacy of the immunotherapy. 展开更多

It is thought that the life of our Earth can be divided into two basic periods which are: the abiotic sterile physical life and the biological life. Both can be separated into smaller sections which are in the case of physical life: glowing star state with atomic evolution, solidification of the surface, the appearance of C, O2 and water and abiotic chemical evolution. During that period of time kinds of external and internal energy were effective only through physical-chemical way. In the case of biological life, the 1st section started with the appearance of the first living unit and ended with the beginning of photosynthesis. The 2nd one lasted from the start of photosynthesis till the appearance of the first two man-like creatures. The 3rd one began from that point of time and lasted till 1778 and the last one the 4th has existed since that date. Since the appearance of the first living unit biological accumulation of external energy and mainly C but not only, emission of CO2 gas, metabolites, heat, transformation and loading of the earthly environment as well as natural mutation of organisms that is the biological evolution have flown. When photosynthesis began biological fixation of solar energy/photon and free atmospheric CO2, as well as production of free O2, have also started beside the former events and the biological evolution has continued. No unnatural event had happened in these two sections. The fate of the 3rd and the 4th sections— that is the anthropoid time—has been determined by the unnatural effects of man kind. The most important altering events are: the number of the inhabitants, the use of fire, agricultural production, domestication of animals, formation and maintenance of industry, trade, vehicle-park, denaturation of the surface of the Earth and contamination of soil, atmosphere and waters etc. Finally, ideas for the solution of the climate problems which are mainly the results of the 3rd and 4th sections will be discussed. 展开更多

The application of medical devices to repair skin damage is clinically accepted and natural polymer enjoys an important role in this field, such as collagen or hyaluronic acid, etc. However, the biosafety and efficacy of these implants are still challenged. In this study,a skin damage animal model was prepared by UV-photoaging and recombinant humanized type Ⅲ collagen(rhCol Ⅲ)was applied as a bioactive material to implant in vivo to study its biological effect, comparing with saline and uncrosslinked hyaluronic acid(HA).Animal skin conditions were non-invasively and dynamically monitored during the 8 weeks experiment.Histological observation, specific gene expression and other molecular biological methods were applied by the end of the animal experiment. The results indicated that rhCol Ⅲ could alleviate the skin photoaging caused by UV radiation, including reduce the thickening of epidermis and dermis, increase the secretion of Collagen Ⅰ(Col Ⅰ)and Collagen Ⅲ(Col Ⅲ)and remodel of extracellular matrix(ECM).Although the cell-material interaction and mechanism need more investigation, the effect of rhCol Ⅲ on damaged skin was discussed from influence on cells, reconstruction of ECM,and stimulus of small biological molecules based on current results. In conclusion, our findings provided rigorous biosafety information of rhCol Ⅲ and approved its potential in skin repair and regeneration.Although enormous efforts still need to be made to achieve successful translation from bench to clinic, the recombinant humanized collagen showed superiorities from both safety and efficacy aspects. 展开更多

In particular, system-atically quantitative analyses were documented by field experiments. Results showed that ecotoxicological effects under the combined pollution were not only related to chemical proper-ties of pollutants but also dependent on the concentration level of pollutants, in particular on the combination of concentrations of pollutants in ecosystems. Additionally, species of organisms, especially the type of ecosystem, determined the influences. To some extent, biological tissue targets attacked by pollutants were an important factor. 展开更多

Fruits are regarded as the richest dietary sources of polyphenols, carotenoids, terpenoids, and limonoids, making them highly desired prospects for the functional food industry.Citrus waste that remains after fruit processing is also regarded as a valuable source of value-added phytochemicals.A comprehensive analysis of mandarin composition as a determinant of fruit functional properties, health benefits, and valorization into useful products is represented together with the effect of different processes such as light, wax coating, auxin addition, ozone treatment, and ethylene degreening.Such reviewing evidence is an essential precondition for improving the selling market of mandarin and highlighting its waste valorization potential and its incorporation into useful products produced by pharmaceutical industries. In this study, the phytochemical and biological reports presented to emphasize the needed priority for agricultural techniques to provide a certain mandarin product or trait. In addition, the paper summarizes the optimum conditions applied for the updated extraction techniques for phenolic acids, flavonoids, and oils at a commercial scale from mandarin peels and to enhance its global marketing.A brief representation is given towards potential mandarin patents and the valorization of its bio-waste fruits into commercial products of added value. The review can guide researchers to produce future potentially marketed functional food enriched with mandarin extracts and/or bioactives. 展开更多
