An improved algorithm for computing multiphase flows is presented in which the multimaterial Moment-of-Fluid(MOF)algorithm for multiphase flows, initially described by Li et al.(2015),is enhanced addressing existing MOF difficulties in computing solutions to problems in which surface tension forces are crucial for understanding salient flow mechanisms. The Continuous MOF(CMOF)method is motivated in this article. The CMOF reconstruction method inherently removes the"checkerboard instability"that persists when using the MOF method on surface tension driven multiphase(multimaterial)flows. The CMOF reconstruction algorithm is accelerated by coupling the CMOF method to the level set method and coupling the CMOF method to a decision tree machine learning(ML)algorithm.Multiphase flow examples are shown in the two-dimensional(2D),three-dimensional(3D)axisymmetric"RZ",and 3D coordinate systems.Examples include two material and three material multiphase flows:bubble formation, the impingement of a liquid jet on a gas bubble in a cryogenic fuel tank, freezing, and liquid lens dynamics. 展开更多

To predict the flow evolution of fish swimming problems,a flow solver based on the immersed boundary lattice Boltzmann method is developed.A flexible iterative algorithm based on the framework of implicit boundary force correction is used to save the computational cost and memory, and the momentum forcing is described by a simple direct force formula without complicated integral calculation when the velocity correction at the boundary node is determined. With the presented flow solver, the hydrodynamic interaction between the fish-induced dynamic stall vortices and the incoming vortices in unsteady flow is analyzed.Numerical simulation results unveil the mechanism of fish exploiting vortices to enhance their own hydrodynamic performances. The superior swimming performances originate from the relative movement between the“merged vortex”and the locomotion of the fishtail, which is controlled by the phase difference.Formation conditions of the“merged vortex”become the key factor for fish to exploit vortices to improve their swimming performance. We further discuss the effect of the principal components of locomotion. From the results,we conclude that lateral translation plays a crucial role in propulsion while body undulation in tandem with rotation and head motion reduce the locomotor cost. 展开更多

The capsule is modeled as a liquid drop sur- rounded by a neo-Hookean elastic membrane. The numer- ical model combines immersed boundary with lattice Boltz- mann method (IB-LBM). The LBM is used to simulate fixed Cartesian grid while the IBM is utilized to implement the fluid-structure interaction by a set of Lagrangian moving grids for the membrane. The effect of shear elasticity and bending stiffness are both considered. The results show the significance of elastic modulus and initial lateral position on deformation and morphological properties of a circular cap- sule. The wall effect becomes stronger as the capsule ini- tial position gets closer to the channel wall. As the elastic modulus of membrane increases, the capsule undergoes less pronounced deformation and velocity in direction x is de- creased, thus, the capsule motion is slower than the back- ground flow. The best agreement between the present model and experiments for migration velocity takes place for the capsule with normal to moderate membrane elastic modulus. The results are in good agreement with experiment study of Coupier et al. and previous numerical studies. Therefore, the IB-LBM can be employed to make prediction in vitro and in vivo studies of capsule deformation. 展开更多

Results of a large set of tensile and compressive creep tests on pure Al were reanalyzed for the influence of low-and high-angle grain boundaries on the deformation resistance at the temperature T = 473 K = 0.51 Tmwhere Tm is the melting point.Thermomechanical treatment by equal channel angular pressing followed by heating to T led to strong increase of areal fraction of high-angle boundaries in a structure of subgrains of ≈10^-6m in size, accompanied by significant reduction of subgrain strengthening and of the stress sensitivity of the deformation rate.(Sub)grain strengthening by low-angle boundaries is most effective;the strengthening effect virtually disappears during creep as the boundary spacings coarsen toward their stress-dependent,quasi-stationary size wqs.The same type of coarsening is found for(sub)grain structures with large fraction of high-angle boundaries;in the quasi-stationary state they lead to softening at low and strengthening at high stresses, and a significant increase in tensile fracture strain to values up to 0.8.The results are analogous to former results for Cu and are explained in the same way by the influence of boundaries on storage and recovery of crystal defects and the homogenization of glide. 展开更多

Numerical simulation based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a useful approach for quantitatively investigating the underlying thermal-mechanical conditions during FSW, such as temperature field and material deformation field. One of the critical issues in CFD simulation of FSW is the use of the frictional boundary condition, which represents the friction between the welding tool and the workpiece in the numerical models. In this study, three-dimensional numerical simulation is conducted to analyze the heat transfer and plastic deformation behaviors during the FSW of AA2024. For comparison purposes, both the boundary velocity (BV) models and the boundary shear stress (BSS) models are employed in order to assess their performances in predicting the temperature and material deformation in FSW. It is interesting to note that different boundary conditions yield similar predictions on temperature, but quite different predictions on material deformation. The numerical predictions are compared with the experimental results. The predicted deformation zone geometry by the BSS model is consistent with the experimental results while there is large difference between the predictions by the BV models and the experimental measurements. The fact that the BSS model yields more reasonable predictions on the deformation zone geometry is attributed to its capacity to automatically adjust the contact state at the tool/workpiece interface. Based on the favorable predictions on both the temperature field and the material deformation field, the BSS model is suggested to have a better performance in numerical simulation of FSW than the BV model. 展开更多

Applying the discrete element method(DEM)in soil mechanics can provide abundant information at the particle-scale and facilitates illustration of the macro-mechanical behaviour of soils based on the inter-particle mechanisms. The triaxial test is one of the most common laboratory methods to study the macro-mechanical behaviour of particulate materials such as soil. However, many problems in geotechnical design can be assumed and simplified as a plane strain phenomenon. Therefore a biaxial test can be conducted to reproduce the macro-mechanical behaviour of soil, where the sample is enclosed by two horizontal rigid platens and a vertical latex membrane, which is a deformable continuous element and allows the enclosed specimen to deform freely while maintaining confining stress during loading. This paper presents an algorithm to represent physical and mechanical characteristics of latex membrane in the 2D DEM simulation of biaxial test using the PFC^(2D) code.To investigate the impact of the lateral boundary conditions on the micro-macro mechanical behaviours of soil samples, two sets of DEM biaxial tests are conducted,i.e.with rigid and deformable lateral boundary conditions. The DEM modeling results indicate that the lateral boundary conditions have a significant effect on the micro-scale fabric properties, thickness and inclination of the shear band. The comparison between these two simulations also demonstrates that the lateral boundary conditions play a major role in the peak and post-peak stress-strain behaviours as well as the dilation and critical state behaviours of granular soils. 展开更多

The continuous mediums are divided into two kinds according to their geometrical configurations, the first one is related to Euclidian manifolds and the other one to Riemannian manifolds/surfaces in the point of view of the modern geometry. Two kinds of finite deformation theories with respect to Euclidian and Riemannian manifolds have been developed in the present paper. Both kinds of theories include the definitions of initial and current physical and parametric configurations, deformation gradient tensors with properties, deformation descriptions, transport theories and governing equations of nature conservation laws. The essential property of the theory with respect to Euclidian manifolds is that the curvilinear coordinates corresponding to the current physical configurations include time explicitly through which the geometrically irregular and time varying physical configurations can be mapped in the diffeomorphism manner to the regular and fixed domains in the parametric space. It is quite essential to the study of the relationships between geometries and mechanics. The theory with respect to Riemannian manifolds provides the systemic ideas and methods to study the deformations of continuous mediums whose geometrical configurations can be considered as general surfaces. The essential property of the theory with respect to Riemannian manifolds is that the thickness variation of a patch of continuous medium is represented by the surface density and its governing equation is rigorously deduced. As some applications, wakes of cylinders with deformable boundaries on the plane, incompressible wakes of a circular cylinder on fixed surfaces and axisymmetric finite deformations of an elastic membrane are numerically studied. 展开更多
