Chinese-English code-mixing with distinct linguistic features has become prevailing in domestic trademarks in recent three or four decades. The reasons behind this prevalence were left untouched in previous studies. In this paper, Giddens' modernity theory is used as the theoretical framework to account for the major reason behind the prevalence of Chinese-English codemixing: English code in Chinese business logos plays a positive role as a reflection of China's modernization and her participation in economic globalization. 展开更多

A series of recent foreign capital mergers and acquisitions (M&A) of Chinese businesses has raised concern about China's economic security. Will these actions damage China's national interests and is it necessary for China to set a bottom line in this field? Yang Fan, a professor at the China University of Political Science and Law, and He Maochun, Director of the Research Center of Economy and Diplomacy, Tsinghua University, were recently published in the Global Times, analyzing the impact of foreign M&A deals on China's economy from different perspectives. This study proposes a framework to analyze the co-evolution between the remittance business for overseas Chinese and their institutions during 1860-1949. In particular, this paper focuses on the co-evolutions between their organizational fields and institutions. It shows that participants communicate, compete and cooperate through their organizational fields, and finally promote the remittance business. Since the three pillars of institutions---regulative, normative, and cultural-cognitive--correlate and interact with each other, it is found that institutions can promote the business of overseas remittance if the combination of these three pillars of institutions works well; otherwise, it ends the business with confusion. 展开更多

By tracing the development of social welfare systems in the six cotton mills of the Yudahua Business Group from the 1920s to the 1950s, this paper argues that some private firms experienced unprecedented wartime expansion of workers' welfare programs. The social welfare system that was thus taking form continued during the early 1950s, but progress slowed as compared to the wartime advances. The slowness in development was largely due to the enforcement of a state policy that prioritized production requirements and class conciliation programs, thus discouraging the rapid improvements of earlier decades. State efforts to prioritize heavy industries over light industries and to standardize wages and welfare throughout the same industry within a local economy also forced some industrial workers to make sacrifices in salary and benefits. 展开更多

This case study examines the succession of Chinese family business in Hong Kong, drawing upon theories of the firm. More specifically, it utilizes capabilities theories, property rights economics and Neo-Confucianism to understand management disputes and infighting among the members in a Chinese family business in Hong Kong. This paper will argue that the founder of a Chinese business firm in Hong Kong is able to lead his or her offspring to create a dynamic enterprise via charismatic leadership and family rules embedded in traditional Chinese values. However, these two strategic assets disappear following the passing away of the founder as well as the emergence of new social values. When the founder passes on the enterprise to his or her offspring using more or less the equal inheritance system, the traditional Chinese value is unable to enforce the leader's will to consolidate the strengths of the second generation family members to maintain the founder's business. Furthermore, when the business is owned by all family members, property rights of the firm become unclear. Without effective enforcement of traditional Chinese values and with collective ownership rights, some family members will have the incentive to capture the economic rent that is shared by all members. In other words, some family members behave opportunistically or even cheat in order to capture economic gains in the public domain. High monitoring and enforcement costs in the form of court battle and endless disputes will occur. Rent dissipation occurs in the form of deterioration of the quality of the family business. This casestudy is based on Yung Kee, an intemationally well-known roast goose restaurant in Hong Kong as an illustration. 展开更多
