A Study on Internet Buzzwords in the Last Four Years Based on Conceptual Integration Theory

Internet buzzwords,as distinct forms of language,consist of short sentences yet carry rich meanings and spread rapidly.To better study this intriguing and unique linguistic phenomenon,this paper employed conceptual integration theory for its powerful explanatory capabilities to analyze the origins,composition,and emergence of meanings of internet buzzwords over the past four years.These 40 internet buzzwords can be categorized into five types:semantic derivation,generalization,abbreviation,metonymy,and compounding.Furthermore,this paper conducted cognitive analysis from different conceptual integration network perspectives,elucidating specific cognitive operations involved in the construction of meanings and revealing the emergence process of layered meanings in recent internet buzzwords over the past four years. 展开更多

The popularity of the Internet in China has led to the creation of numerous Internet buzzwords with both unique semantic features and cultural connotations.Based on the Skopos Theory by Vermeer,this thesis investigates the application of Skopos Theory to the translation of newly-created Chinese Internet buzzword.This thesis analyzes five translation strategies for these Chinese buzzword created and translated during the four-year period from 2010 to 2013.The strategy in translating Internet buzzword includes literal translation,free translation,transliteration,literal translation with notes and innovative translation.The result shows that to convey both the semantic and cultural connotations effectively,the application of Skopos theory is a key to the successful translation of these buzzwords from Chinese into English. 展开更多

Recently, the phenomenon of the growing use of online buzzword on China's internet is becoming one of the hot button issue on various communicative occasions. This study uses participant observation to explore the online buzzwords like"打 call","hold 住","we are 伐木累"by mainland Chinese netizens at three core networks in China—Sina Weibo, Tencent Weibo and Wechat. The study suggests that new Chinglish is gaining popularity in China's homegrown social networks. This online buzzword phenomenon of New Chinglish will be analysed in Translanguaging perspective, a theoretical perspective that thinks it as a process of making meaning, shaping experience, gaining understanding and knowledge through the use of multiple languages(Garcia,2009).The mixing practices in China's social networking communities reveals that a mixed-code pidginized variety of Chinese English is gaining popularity in the domain of social interaction. 展开更多

语义互动引申视角下“吃+NP”超常搭配及其认知机制

“吃+NP”属于典型的动宾结构类型,常规意义下用来表示动宾结构之间的食物与被食用的关系。但是在计算机媒介通信环境中,“吃+NP”衍生出了表非常规意义的“吃+NP”超常搭配,例如近几年来“吃瓜”“吃鸡”“吃土”等网络新兴语言现象。... “吃+NP”属于典型的动宾结构类型,常规意义下用来表示动宾结构之间的食物与被食用的关系。但是在计算机媒介通信环境中,“吃+NP”衍生出了表非常规意义的“吃+NP”超常搭配,例如近几年来“吃瓜”“吃鸡”“吃土”等网络新兴语言现象。这些现象可以根据其内部特点分为超越语义限制、超越范围限制和超越习惯用法的三类搭配。该文通过再现“吃+NP”超常搭配的认知衍生路径,挖掘了主导“吃+NP”认知产生背后的语法机制,即基于“吃”与“NP”语义互动的隐喻认知机制、转喻认知机制及二者混合的认知机制,这些超常搭配又可因不同的作用对象和方式进行细化分类。关于“吃+NP”的产生与其在网络上的流行,一方面是受到语言内部因素的影响,另一方面与语言外部的因素相关。 展开更多
