With the increasing use of aluminum shape castings in structural applications in the automotive and aerospace industries,assurance of cast product integrity and performance has become critical in both design and manufacturing.In this paper,the latest understanding of the relationship between casting quality and mechanical properties of aluminum castings is summarized.Newly developed technologies for alloy design,melting and melt treatment,casting and heat treatment processes in aluminum casting are reviewed.The mechanical properties of aluminum castings strongly depend upon their microstructure constituents and particularly cast defect population and distribution.To produce quality castings with quantifiable properties,the key is to control multi-scale defects and microstructure in the casting.Robust design and development of high integrity aluminum castings through Integrated Computational Materials Engineering(ICME) approach is also discussed.The most effective way to optimize the processes and achieve the desirable mechanical properties is through the development and exploitation of robust and accurate multi-scale computational models. 展开更多

Contacting state between molten metal and a mold and initial solidification process of continuously cast metals can be controlled by imposing an intermittent magnetic field.In this study, effect of the intermittent magnetic field on the initial solidification ofcontinuoasly cast metals was investigated by measuring the temperature distribution in the melt pool and the initial solidification starting position of shells. It was found that under the condition with intermittent magnetic field, the melt near meniscns is in slow cooling state, the initial solidification starting position descends, initial solidification shell thickens and the liquid-solid interface becomes smooth. 展开更多

Argon protection is essential for ensuring casting quality during ingot casting. The development of argon protection in ingot casting and the production process of enclosed argon protection in 40 t line is discussed,w ith particular focus given the factors affecting the flow of oxygen in the argon protection cover are discussed. The influence of some related factors on the oxygen content is analyzed. On the basis of the online measurements of the oxygen content,the optimized operational approaches for improving the effect of argon protection are developed. This can decrease the liquid steel via secondary oxidation,and improve the quality of the ingots. 展开更多
