A total number of twenty West African dwarf male sheep with an average weight of 9.00 ± 0.52 kg and aged 10 months old were used for the experiment. The dwarf sheep were assigned to four treatment groups in a completely randomized design with five sheep per treatment group. The compared treatment groups were TA (black coat colour sheep with low coat depth and short hair length), TB (black coat colour sheep with high coat depth and long hair length), TC (light brown coat colour sheep with low coat depth and short hair length) and TD (light brown coat colour sheep with high coat depth and long hair length). The results obtained in the study showed that midday was significantly (P 0.05) affected by morning, midday and evening. Rectal temperature (40.09℃), respiratory rate (21.01 breaths/min), pulse rate (87.49 beats/min), heat tolerance coefficient (97.10%), haemoglobin (9.04 g/l), blood cell (10.84 × 106/μl), white blood cell (12.06 × 106/μl) and glucose (50.10 mg/dl) were significantly (P 0.05) did not occur in total protein, albumin and globulin among treatment groups. It is concluded that coat characteristics have significant effects on physiological indices and heat tolerance in Nigeria.展开更多

With continuous distribution of PTI and numerous of lines with different PTIs in the progenies, indica-japonica hybridization could be a method for breeding cultivars with ideal panicle type. PTI was significantly influenced by environments, with a significant decrease from Liaoning to Sichuan A significantly negative correlation was found between PTI and most of subspecies characteristics. PTI varied remarkably with different subspecies types. As a whole, it showed a trend of indica (H)〉indicalinous (H')〉japonicalinous (K')〉japonica (K) However, it is not appropriate to regard PTI as a parameter for subspecies classification in rice because it was recombined in the filial generations of cross between indica and japonica rice. The negative correlations were found between PTI and most of panicle characteristics, as well as yield-related traits. Based on PTI, most of lines from the two populations were middle dominant panicle type (the number of grains on the secondary branch is numerous in middle position of the panicle) and lower dominant panicle type (the number of grains on the secondary branch is numerous in lower position of the panicle and becomes less towards the top of panicle) with significant yield advantages.展开更多

Morphologic differences between different ploidy plants were analyzed. Average bark area percentages in ramie stem transection of haploids, tetraploids, diploids and triploids were 28. 91, 27. 05, 26. 97 and 24.77% respectively. Average percentages of fiber layer area of diploids, haploids, tetraploids and triploids were 16.80, 16. 58, 15.52 and 13.78% respectively. Average fiber cell diameter and cell wall thickness were increased along with the increase of the ploidy of the plants. Average fiber length of diploids, triploids and haploids were 8. 49, 7. 96 and 6. 93 cm respectively. Average L/B (length/breadth) of diploids, triploids and haploids were 2 470. 7, 2 390. 6 and 1 616.3 respectively. Average breadths of fiber of haploids, diploids and triploids were 29. 30, 33. 87 and 49. 20μm respectively. However, there were relatively large variations in the above characteristics among the ramie materials of the same ploidy levels. Field performance of different ploidy plants was also investigated. As the chromosome ploidy increasing, there was a tendency of declining in shoot number per plant and increasing in stem diameter. Average shoots per plant of haploids, diploids, triploids and tetraploids were 5.83, 5.30, 3.77 and 3. 65 whereas their average stem diameters were 0.66, 0. 67, 0. 74 and 0. 76 cm respectively. Triploids were the tallest, while haploids were the shortest. Triploids had strong growth vigour, diploids and tetraploids had moderate growth vigour, while haploids appeared to be lack of growth vigour. Cold stress tolerance of tetraploids were the strongest, diploid had the moderate tolerance, while haploids and triploids were the least tolerant to cold stress. Both haploids and triploids were sterile.展开更多

A total of 290 alleles were detected in the 60 accessions at 72 SSR loci with the high similarity coefficients varying between 0.600 and 0.924. The loci on chromosome 5 showed the greatest value in average allele number. Additionally, most of the SSR loci could detect 3 to 4 alleles. An UPGMA dendrogram based on the cluster analysis of the genetic similarity coefficients showed that the grouping trend of part of the rice accessions was geographic-related and most of the rice accessions in Jiangsu Province, China were clustered together. Furthermore, many domestic accessions from south and north origins in China were close to the foreign japonica rice varieties, as proved by their pedigree origin from the foreign high-quality sources. For taste characteristics, part of the accessions with excellent taste were clearly clustered into one category though they came from different geographical regions, which indicates that taste characteristics of some varieties were mainly genetically determined. In addition, the agronomic traits of japonica rice with good taste might be closely related with their geographical origins, but the relationship between superior taste characteristics and agronomic traits should be further clarified.展开更多

Popping characteristics of derived lines from popcorn × dent or flint corn crosses play a determinant role in popcorn breeding. Advanced backcross QTL methods can effectively combine QTL identification and plant breeding. 220 selected BC2F2 families developed from a cross between Dan 232, a dent corn inbred line, and N04, an elite popcorn inbred line, were evaluated for three popping characteristics, popping volume, flake size, and popping rate, under two environmental conditions. Using composite interval mapping, a total of 10 significant QTLs were detected, and of these, 2 to 4 QTLs were identified for each trait. Six QTLs had favorable alleles contributed by Dan 232. Comparison with the 15 QTLs detected in the F2:3 families showed that 3 QTLs were the same in both populations. The QTLs should be redetected in generations developed through severe selection. Improved N04 and near isogenic lines could be developed from this BC2F2 population through selfing or another 1 to 2 backcrosses with N04.展开更多

A total of 241 F2:3 families were evaluated in replicated trials under deficient phosphorus conditions in 2007 at two sites (Kaixian County and Southwest University, Chongqing, P. R. China). The results show pleiotropy and close linkage among QTLs. Four common regions in different environments were in bnlg100- bnlg1268b (bins 1.02) for QTL of H+, bnlg1268a-umc1290a (bins 1.09) for QTL of AP (acid phospbatase activity), dupssrl5- P 1MT/a (bins 6.06) for QTLs of PU (phosphorus uptake) and RW (root weight), and P IM3/d-P1M3/g (bins9.04) for QTLs of PU and AP. These QTLs are non-environment or minor QTLs x environment. By epistatic analysis, three main QTLs and eighteen QTLs x QTLs interactions were detected for the seven measured characteristics. These QTLs may affect trait expression by epistatic interaction with the other loci, and make a substantial contribution to phosphorus utilization efficiency, which should be considered when breeding maize varieties with high P efficiency. Two regions were detected in dupssrl 5- P1MT/a (bins 6.06) for QTL of RW and P1M3/d- P 1M3/g (bins 9.04) for QTL of PU and AP. They were detected in two different environments and by two methods of QTL analysis, which were useful for marker-assisted selection.展开更多
