These typically include pharmacologic pain management, epidural injections, and generalized CAM treatments such as massage and chiropractic manipulation in the non-fused areas of the spine. The purpose of this study was to compare the post-treatment results in an adult post-fusion patient who wore a scoliosis activity suit for 8 months. Pain was evaluated using a quadruple visual analog scale (QVAS), while function was measured using an SRS-22r questionnaire. After 8 months of wearing the scoliosis activity suit, her pain scores improved, here SRS-22r improved, and a significant correction in radiographic Cobb angle was observed. This case report is the first to document a Cobb angle change in an adult patient wearing a scoliosis activity suit who is status post-fusion. Given that pain and dysfunction are primary reasons for scoliosis treatment in the adult population, more studies need to address the disparity between available treatments for adult scoliosis and the incidence of adult scoliosis, especially in the post-meno-pausal population. Future prospective studies should consider evaluating treatment effects of this suit using intent-to-treat methodology.展开更多

The syndrome affects about 8% of the population, with higher prevalence in females, and rarely affects the children. Conservative, non-surgical treatment produces good results, and it becomes important to know which specific areas need to be treated. Currently, there is no rehabilitation scheme, either osteopathic or chiropractic, considered as a valid tool for a precise localization of the pathologic condition, probably due to the lack of a manual assessment process to evaluate bones and muscular components of the thoracic outlet. In this situation, the manual treatment performed is usually generic. The present article proposes a manual evaluation that can be used to identify the anatomical area which needs to be treated. This hypothesis of assessment should be carried out after the clinician has ruled out the necessity of surgery with instrumental examinations.展开更多

Although there has been a vast amount of bracing literature published, the results remain equivocal. Many patients face issues of compliance, comfort, and decreased self-esteem due to social stigmas with bracing. This has caused many patients to seek non-bracing options. Although these treatments are plausible, they lack the research background that bracing has. Therefore, many physicians are reluctant to prescribe exercise-based rehabilitation for their scoliosis patients. This study reports on 3 patients who sought non-bracing, exercise-based chiropractic rehabilitation for their scoliosis. Their results before, after, and at long term follow up are included.展开更多

Non-surgical scoliosis treatment options for adults are not widely recommended, largely due to lack of research in this area. Pain management options for adults are focused primarily on treating scoliosis-related pain, and not necessarily the scoliosis itself, such as epidural injections, prescription pain medications, and general physical therapy. Recent studies reporting non-surgical, scoliosis-specific treatment methods in adults are encouraging, but their study designs limit extrapolation. The current study reports the self-reported pain and radiographic outcomes in adult patients wearing a scoliosis activity suit for at least 10 years. A total of 22 patient charts that fulfilled the inclusion criteria were selected for review. Cobb angle radiographic measurements and self-rated quadruple numerical pain rating scale (QVAS) at baseline and 10-year follow-up were used as the outcomes. Cobb angle measurements were compared at baseline and 10 years and subdivided according to scoliosis curve pattern. At 10 years, 68% of patients had improvements in their Cobb angle > 5˚, with an overall average of approximately 9˚. Significant differences were also observed in the 10-year Cobb angle measurements when compared to the predicted 10-year Cobb angles based on the established rate of linear progression in adults. A statistically significant change was also observed in the 10-year QVAS scores. These results suggest a potential role of the scoliosis activity suit for improving Cobb angles in adults and reducing scoliosis-related pain.展开更多

Methods: Sixty infants in conformity with the diagnostic criteria of diarrhea due to spleen deficiency were randomly divided into a treatment group and a control group by the random digital table, 30 cases in each group. The infants in the treatment group were treated by Nie-pinching the spine manipulation and traditional infantile tuina, in addition to the routine basic treatment. The infants in the control group were treated by the same traditional infantile tuina in addition to the routine basic treatment. The infants in the two groups were treated once every day, 4 weeks as a course. Totally, the treatment was given for a course. The symptom integrals of spleen deficiency were used to assess the improvement in the symptoms. The colorimetry was used to determine the excretory rate of urine D-xylose. Results: in the comparison of the same group before and after the treatment, the differences in the global score of spleen deficiency symptoms and the excretory rate of urine D-xylose in the two groups were statistically significant (all P〈0.01). After the treatment, the differences in the global score of spleen deficiency symptoms and the excretory rate of urine D-xylose between the two groups were all statistically significant (both P〈0.01). Conclusion: Chiropractics can reduce the integrals of spleen deficiency symptoms and elevate the excretory rate of urine D-xylose in the infants with diarrhea due to spleen deficiency, so as to enhance the therapeutic effects by alleviating the symptoms of spleen deficiency and the absorptive function of the small intestine.展开更多

文摘Objective:To observe the clinical efficacy of Nie-pinching the spine, puncturing Sifeng(EX-UE 10)plus Chinese herbs in treating pediatric anorexia due to dysfunction of spleen in transportation. Methods:A total of 64 kids were randomized into an observation group and a control group by the random number table method, with 32 cases in each group.Patients in both groups received Jian Pi Kai Wei(strengthening spleen and stomach)powder according to pattern differentiation of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM).In addition, patients in the observation group received Nie-pinching the spine and puncturing Sifeng(EX-UE 10).Nie-pinching the spine was applied twice a week, and puncturing Sifeng(EX-UE 10)was performed once a week, with 2 weeks counted as 1 course of treatment. After 2 courses of treatment, the body mass index(BMI),peripheral blood leptin level and the microelements Zn,Fe and Se were compared at different time points(before treatment, after the first and second courses of treatment),as well as the therapeutic efficacy and onset time. Results:After 2 courses of treatment,31 cases in each group were evaluated. After the 1st course and the 2nd course, the BMI and serum Zn,Fe and Se levels in the observation group increased significantly(all P<0.05),the leptin level decreased substantially(both P<0.05);the BMI in the control group showed a substantial rise(P<0.05),while the Zn,Fe and Se levels slightly increased showing no statistical significance(all P>0.05),and the leptin level decreased but the difference showed no statistical significance(P>0.05).After the 1st and the 2nd courses of treatment, the BMI,serum Zn,Fe and Se levels increased more significantly(all P<0.05),and the serum leptin level decreased more significantly(both P<0.05)in the observation group than in the control group. After the 2nd course, the total effective rate and recovery rate in the observation group were both higher than those in the control group(both P<0.05),together with a quicker onset time(P<0.05).Conclusion:Nie-pinching the spine, puncturing Sifeng(EX-UE 10)plus Chinese herbs is effective for pediatric anorexia due to dysfunction of spleen in transportation. It can decrease leptin, increase Zn,Fe and Se levels, alleviate apositic symptoms and increase BMI in the kids.
