Two Christological Documents on Their Approaching 25th Anniversary: Dominus Iesus (2000) and Chapter Two of Novo Millennio Ineunte (2001)-Comparing and Contrasting Their Tone and Content

Within the span of five months during the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000,the Catholic Church published two documents focused on Jesus Christ:Dominus Iesus and Novo Millennio Ineunte(with emphasis in this article on its second chapter).Although in various instances,both documents converge and deal with the same subject,one can observe how the perspectives and attitudes expressed in both differ in various ways.Their aim is different because Dominus Iesus was issued to oppose certain erroneous positions in the context of theories of religious pluralism,while Novo Millennio Ineunte is a pastoral reflection on the fruits of the Jubilee and the state of the community of Christ’s faithful at the turn of the last century.This article seeks to address the content of the two documents,while highlighting the differences in their style and approach.

Taxonomic Studies of Weed Communities Growing in Date Palm and Christ’s Thorn Jujube Farms in Ad-Dawadimi, KSA

The problem of food shortage is one of the most important problems facing many countries in the world. Various factors affect the decline in crop productivity. Where weeds are the most important reasons that cause a huge loss in crop productivity. Studying agricultural ecosystems, knowing their components and explaining the relationship between all of their components, helps a lot in achieving the highest productivity of different crops in addition to benefiting from some types of weeds, as well as, identifying appropriate methods to control the growth of weeds. In this study, 60 species were listed. The most frequent plant families were Asteraceae, Poaceae and Zygophyllaceae. Annuals were the most common life span, as well as, therophytes were the most frequent life form. The most frequent floristic categories were Saharo-Sindian-Sudano-Zambezian and Saharo-Sindian regions. The most famous indicators of biodiversity (species richness, species evenness and species diversity) have been calculated. For managing and classifying data PC-ORD program (TWINSPAN and DCA analyses) was used.

This article focuses on an important aspect of the Son of God and redeeemer of humanity,who became man in the incarnation.The study delves into the human dimension of Jesus Christ as a man for others and with others.His closeness to fellow men and women is striking.This closeness is accomplished through his pedagogical method by means of the stories(parables)he vividly narrated,as well as through the miracles he astonishingly carried out to help or heal others.Both parables and miracles lie at the basis of his proclamation of the Kingdom of God.Jesus was particularly close to those who were at the fringes of society.Jesus’social behaviour is also highlighted,with special reference to his especially unique style of table fellowship,going counter to the strict norms of his people.The climax of his being for others and with others is reached in his paschal mystery,namely his total self-offering in his passion,death and resurrection from the dead.

Toledoth Yeshu: A Jewish Critique of the Gentile Christian Transformation of Jesus Christ

The essay deals with the so-called“Toledoth Yeshu,”one of the most cryptic stories about Jesus Christ from Middle Ages.They referred to some stories of the Gospels of the New Testament and rearranged them again in order to set up a counter story.The thesis of the paper is that these counter stories did not aim at the New Testament as such,but at the Christological dogmatic that stripped Jesus of his Jewishness and turned him into a figure similar to pagan deities opposing and damaging Jewish tradition mainly by exercising magic.At the end,“Toledoth Yeshu”told a story claiming that Yeshu was sentenced to death only by Jewish authorities,because he practiced the blasphemous act of magic of God’s name,seduced his followers by doing so and,therefore,damaged the faith in the One God.That is why I consider“Toledoth Yeshu”a strong and self-conscious Jewish polemic not against the Jewish roots of Christianity,not even against the Jewish Christians that long have perished,but against Gentile or pagan Christianity and its successful attempt to turn Christ into a paganized divine being acting out magic instead of observing the Torah.

Reading the Story of Jesus Christ as an Epic

There is no doubt that Jesus Christ is the eternal embodiment of the Christian faith. The story of salvation,especially the life of Jesus, forms the basis through which many Christians encounter the eternal. Indeed, each facetof Christ is intricately intertwined with the others and that Christian literature often focuses on redefining variousfigures in the image of Christ and on illustrating morality. Without disparaging in any way the story of Jesus Christ,this paper parallels the conceptualization of epic heroism and the narrative of Jesus Christ. In doing this, the articleprovides a critical exegesis of elements of epic heroism in the story of Christ. Ultimately, reading the story of JesusChrist through the prism of epic heroism helps us submit that it is a ＂tale of Christian identity＂ comparable to theepic identity and able to eonvey eternal meaning to Christian groups who recognize it as ＂their story of salvation＂.

On the Encounter of Satan and Christ in John Milton＇s Paradise Lost

In Milton＇s Paradise Lost, Satan is conspicuously depicted as the ＂mighty chief＂ （I 566） and ＂the dread commander＂ （I 589） of the rebel army. True to the Hebrew meaning of his name, Satan poses appropriately as a grand ＂Adversary＂ （I 629; II 282） to ＂wage by force or guile eternal war＂ （I 121） against God. The poet has deliberately built up a parallel between Satan and Christ the Son, who is the commander-in-chief of the angelic army. With ＂Almighty arms / Gird on, and Sword upon [his] puissant Thigh＂ （VI 713-14）, the Son certainly makes an impressive figure of warrior-general. Satan＇s stance as the ＂idol of majesty divine＂ is really extraordinary. During the War in Heaven, he does show superhuman courage and strength; his ability to change his bodily form has no doubt increased his potential as a warrior. Furthermore, he commands a highly disciplined army, surpassing by far the best troops in human history. All this seems to indicate Satan as a great hero. Even before God proclaims the Son to be raised ＂by merit＂ to the position of＂second omnipotence＂ （III 309）, Milton has already made it clear to the reader that Satan, too, is ＂by merit rais＇d / To that bad eminence＂ （II 5-6）. This ambivalent merit of Satan has incurred heated controversy among the critics. The present paper will set out to analyze the encounter between Satan and the Son in Paradise Lost, in an effort to determine the true meaning of heroism.

Grounds for a Christian Statement on Suffering in the Thought of Pope John Paul Ⅱ

The article seeks to address the problem of suffering in the world by offering a Christian statement on this great issue which has affected and perplexed humanity throughout the ages. The content of the statement is obtained by a presentation of the theme in a wide spectrum of writings and pronouncements made by Pope John Paul II who led the Catholic Church from 1978 to 2005, and who is considered to be one of the most prominent voices regarding human dignity and existential issues in contemporary times. Contemplating the crucified and risen Christ enables Christians to talk about a new meaning to suffering as well as of a ＂Gospel of suffering＂. The article enters into themes such as the human predicament when faced with suffering, the mission of those who suffer and solidarity with the suffering.

Simultaneous determination of seven caffeoylquinic acids and three flavonoids in Pyrrosia petiolosa(Christ) Ching by RP-UFLC-DAD

An efficient, sensitive, accurate and rapid analytical ultra-fast liquid chromatography （UFLC） method for quality evaluations ofPyrrosia petiolosa （Christ） Ching from 20 regions of China was developed in this study. Ten marker compounds were simultaneously quantified, including 5-caffeoylquinic acid （5-CQA）, 3-caffeoylquinic acid （3-CQA）, 4-caffeoylquinic acid （4-CQA）, 1-caffeoylquinic acid （1-CQA）, 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid （3,5-diCQA）, 4,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid （4,5-diCQA）, 3,4-dicaffeoylquinic acid （3,4-diCQA）, astragalin, kaempferol-3,7-di-O-glucoside and （±）eriodictyol-7-O-β-D-glucuronide. Chromatography was performed on a Kromasil 100-2.5C18 （100 mm×2.1 mm, 2.5 μm） C18 column with gradient elution. The mobile phases consisted of 0.1% formic acid/water （A） and 0.1% formic acid/methanol （B）. The detection wavelength was set at 326 nm and the flow rate was 0.4 mL/min. Ten components were separated well with good linearity （r2〉0.9998）, precision, repeatability, stability. The recovery was in the range of 99.08%-102.77%. The results showed that the content determination using RP-UFLC-DAD fingerprint technique provides an efficient, sensitive, accurate and rapid analytical method for quality assessment ofP. petiolosa （Christ） Ching. Cluster analysis and principal components analysis were successfully applied to analyze 20 samples, the results revealed that the method was efficient and authentic to distinguish producing areas and the source of P. petiolosa （Christ） Ching.
