Cymbopogon citratus, better known as lemongrass, is a plant commonly used for culinary purposes. It is known to contain the compound citronellal, which is responsible for the lemon-scent of many of the plants of the genus Cymbopogon. A chloroform extract of Cymbopogon citratus was screened to determine its free radical scavenging activities. Three different methods were used to test the antioxidant activity of the extract, including FRAP assay (Ferric reducing antioxidant potential), DPPH radical scavenging assay (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl radical reducing power methods), and β-carotene bleaching assay. Cymbopogon citratus showed low radical scavenging activities compared to ascorbic acid, gallic acid and quercetin. The results obtained suggest that Cymbopogon citratus is best appreciated for its refreshing aroma and delicate taste, but has little to offer as a source of antioxidants. 展开更多

[Objectives]The research was to explore the antifungal effects of citronellal, wintergreen oil and their composite essence on Penicillium citrinum.[Methods]The inhibition zones of citronellal, wintergreen oil and their composite essence against P.citrinum were determined by disk diffusion method, and the growth of inhibition zone plate was observed. The fumigation fungicidal rate of fungi-bearing rice paper within 7 d was determined by plate counting method.[Results]Citronellal had strong antifungal effect, and wintergreen oil could slow down the growth rate of P.citrinum.The combination of citronellal and wintergreen oil had a synergistic effect. As fumigants, both citronellal and composite essence had fungicidal rates up to 100%within 7 d.Combined with anaerobic treatments, all the three essential oils could improve the fungicidal efficiency. The adsorbent in deoxidizing agent would adsorb the essential oils,so that their fumigation had a certain slow release effect.[Conclusions]This study can provide a more friendly and efficient method for the prevention and control of cultural relics mold. 展开更多

Citronellal was the major product of catalytic oxidation of dihydromyrcene with oxygen using the catalyst comprised of (MeCN)2PdClNO2 and CuCl2 in a tertiary alcohol in supercritical carbon dioxide. It was found that the chemoselectivity of the reaction and the yield of citronellal were greatly affected by the pressure of carbon dioxide, the reaction temperature and the molar ratio of Pd/Cu. 展开更多

The objective of this study was to test the essential oil-emitted flavor (volatile) of lavender by bacteria killing potency using Escherichia coli, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), enterohemorrhagic E. coli O157:H7, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans. Antibacterial activity was assessed by creating of the bacterial growth curve in the liquid medium cultivation and the growth inhibition on the agar plate cultivation. Citronellal, one of compounds in Rosa rugose oil, was used as a positive control for comparison in activity. The results showed that lavender and citronellal flavor (volatile) or oil respectively demonstrated bacteria killing effect in both analytical manners. However, P. aeruginosa resisted bacteria killing potency of lavender (citronellal) oil or oil-emitted flavor. It could be concluded that both lavender oil-emitted flavor and oil showed bacteria killing potency. Lavender oil (or oil-emitted flavor) will be expected to apply for the patient waiting room to disinfect in air along with the mental relaxation of the patient. 展开更多
