Between the City and Images:An Analysis of Mainstream Media’s Paths of Constructing the Cultural Memory of a City:Taking Chengdu Radio and Television’s“Hi Chengdu”as an Example

Mainstream media play a crucial role in constructing the cultural memory of a city.This study used 319 short videos released by“Hi Chengdu,”a new media product of Chengdu Radio and Television,as samples.Based on the grounded theory,a research framework encompassing“content,technology,and discourse”was established to explore the paths through which mainstream media construct the cultural memory.Regarding content,this paper emphasized temporal and spatial contexts and urban spaces,delving deep into the themes of the cultural memory and vehicles for it.In terms of technology,this paper discussed the practice of leveraging audio/visual-mode discourse to stitch together the impressions of a city and evoke emotional resonance to create a“flow”of memory.As for discourse,this paper looked at the performance of a communication ritual to frame concepts and shape urban identity.It is essential to break free from conventional thinking and leverage local culture as the primary driving force to further boost a city’s productivity,in order to excel in cultural communication.

Based on the perspective of heritage tourism,this paper selected Dali Ancient City,one of the first group of national historic and cultural cities,located in Yunnan Province,China,as case study to analyze the motivation,satisfaction,and loyalty of tourists to national historic and cultural cities with concentrations of ethnic minorities.Through the questionnaire survey on the experience of tourists during their stay in Dali Ancient City,the study identified two motivations related to their visit:cultural motivation and multi-factor motivation,such as delicious food,enjoying holidays.By identifying and understanding the type,motivation,behavior,perception,and experience of tourists in national historic and cultural cities,it was hoped to provide reference for destination management and formulation of corresponding countermeasures.In addition,this study also discussed how tourist motivation analysis contributed to higher satisfaction and loyalty of tourists to a destination.

Urban Conservation Through Chinese Local Original Architecture:The Preservation and Renovation of Zhongshan Road in Hangzhou

How to realise the goal of city revival through the preservation of historic districts is an important issue for all historic cities.This article introduces the Preservation and Renovation Project of Zhongshan Road in Hangzhou regarding its guiding principles,design concepts,and the entire construction process.In this project,the existing historical buildings along Zhongshan Road were preserved by keeping the remains of different historical periods and various lifestyles of the inhabitants.Rather than merely refurbishing the street front only,we reconstructed the Southern Song Dynasty city-block walls along Zhongshan Road and restored the Fangxiang city fabric to create the streetscape of the former Imperial Avenue.Afforested terraced teahouses were built along the road,and the original water system was restored so as to realise the atmosphere of‘watertown’.New buildings were added by adopting local materials and vernacular building forms.The article summarises two strategies for the preservation of a historic district in a large city.One is the comprehensive project planning by research and investigation.The other is the overall design guideline for the street blocks.It also reflects on the disappointing aspects that mainly resulted from time limitations and the poor taste in the refurbishment of shop houses.

The development and institutional characteristics of China's built heritage conservation legislation

The article reviews comprehensively the emergence and development of China's national legislative system for cultural heritage,with a particular focus on built heritage.It covers the period from the late Qing Dynasty to the present.The antiquity preservation legislation and policies from the late Qing Dynasty to the early Republic of China(ROC)era signify the initial emergence of the state-led legislative system for cultural heritage protection and management.The Interim Regulations on the Conservation and Management of Cultural Heritage,passed in 196o,represent the state's first targeted effort to protect significant historic monuments and sites.The 1982 Cultural Heritage Protection Law(CHPL)established the mechanism for the conservation of Protected Cultural Heritage Sites(PCHS),while the 2008 Regulation on the Conservation of Famous Historic and Cultural Cities,Towns and Villages(RCFHCCTV)defined the principles for the conservation and management of historic cities.China's current jurisdiction for the conservation of cultural heritage is underpinned by legislation such as the CHPL,the Intangible Cultural Heritage Law(ICHL),and the RCFHCCTV.This article analyses the characteristics of the current state legislative system for built heritage conservation and the challenges and constraints regarding urban conservation.It concludes with strategic guidance for improving the legislation for China's built heritage conservation in the present era of rapid economic development and urban regeneration.

Some Thoughts on the Preservation of Historical and Cultural Cities

Through the concepts in the preservation plan for the historical and cultural city of Shenyang,this paper at-tempts to discuss and explore various issues such as the understanding and implementation,contents and concepts,preservation and development,heritage and redevleopment of the historical and cultural city,with a hope to providethis profound topic some references for consideration.With the economic and cultural development of the country,more and more attention has been paid to the pres-ervation and the utilization of the historical and cultural relics.Shenyang is one of the second group of the historicalcities designated by the State Council in 1986.Preservation plan and protective measures are now being formulatedfor this city.The following paragraphs outline some views in respect of the preservation of historical and cultural cities.
