Lexical chunks are multiword lexical phenomena that exist somewhere between the traditional poles of lexicon and syntax, conventionalized form/function composites that occur more frequently and have more idiomatically determined meaning than language that is put together each time. Lexical chunks theory supports the development of syntactic rules, helps learners to achieve idiomaticity and appropriateness of business expressions, and benefits successful business communication. Through the study of lexical chunks, the major findings are that possibility of lexical chunks in business English correspondences is relatively high, and among factors influencing discourse coherence, lexical chunks are the main point that has already attracted much attention of users. Based on the study, some pedagogical suggestions are provided in business English correspondence writing class. 展开更多

The activity is a type of journal-keeping for college-English students. I ask the students to write something at regular intervals. It can be of any length. If they don’t have anything specific to write about, they can write summaries or discussions about texts from their English class. They then submit the assignment by a fixed deadline. The results have been satisfactory. Most students handed in some sort of work on time, covering a wide range of topics from personal matters (such as worries and ambitions), interests (such as hobbies, friends and hometowns) to something related to their English class (summaries, discussions or even transcriptions of model paragraphs). Stimulated by immediate feedback from the teacher, the activity has continued through the whole college-English learning period. 展开更多

Correcting students’ composition errors has always been an unrewarding and time consuming task for English teachers. However, ’pair response’ can involve both the students’ and the teacher’s joint efforts in dealing with errors. It is argued that pair response can reduce the incidence of errors and provide a chance for the learners to learn from each other. Suggestions for using this teaching technique are also provided. 展开更多

Chi Zijian's stories connect to the origin of her life's journey, which is the"Earth Spirit."Such a connection renders her stories characteristic of"custom history"by demonstrating how the writer reflects reality from her own perspectives, voice, and methods of narration. The narrative style adopted by Chi Zijian is different from that of other modern stories in which nature is allowed to take its course.Chi Zijian's short stories employ many"accidents"and"coincidences,"bringing the audience back to the storytellers'time of Chinese classical novels. From a writing perspective,a majority of Chi Zijian's stories are about lower-class society and are a custom history for the silent population in the north of China. 展开更多
