The present research is a case study, aiming to explore how the Interpersonal meta-function is reflected in the English classroom discourse, as well as to provide some suggestions for pedagogical improvement based on the findings. The results of the analysis indicate that in terms of Mood, the declarative clause is most frequently used, followed by the interrogative and imperative clause respectively; in terms of modality, the teacher uses modal verbs and Mood Adjuncts to express the degree of certainty; in terms of personal pronouns, the teacher prefers to use the first person plural pronouns. It is suggested that the class should be student-centered and that an equal teacher-student relationship should be established.展开更多

Students as academic novices are often expected to accept the teacher's deposited knowledge for academic achievement in traditional school contexts. Given little attention being paid to their withdrawal of teacher's deposited knowledge for use as meaning-negotiation, this study observes one academically-irrelevant curriculum context----one free and non-compulsory adult Chinese class offered by one local Taiwan Residents government to its foreign residents--to know whether the students' motivation for responding to classroom talk is still affected much by the teacher's dominance of classroom talk. It employs Courtney Cazden's I-R-E (teacher-initiation, student-response, and teacher-evaluation) classroom talk model and Paulo Freire's banking education metaphor as theoretical frameworks to discuss the classroom power relations reflected on the students' withdrawal of the teacher's deposited knowledge. The findings show that when the students' academic achievement is not the instructional objective, the teacher's thematic control, affects the students' motivation for responding more than his/her control of classroom interaction. It concludes that a classroom talk highlighting the students' interest activates their participation and allows the instructor to gain access to the students' knowledge, values, attitudes, and perceptions.展开更多

Through analysis of teachers' use of/and we in the taped videos, some differences in the frequency use of inclusive we and exclusive we have been found and a number of effects the inclusive pronouns create are illustrated. Specifically, the paper reveals how 1 and we help teachers create a sense of authority in the classroom, showing how teachers are aligning with the students. Inclusive pronouns can act as a positive politeness device by imparting knowledge, organizing the contents, and highlighting the important and difficult points. It is noticed that there is fuzziness between inclusive personal pronoun and exclusive pronoun, which can be manipulated by the teacher to create authority or closeness with students.展开更多

Furthermore, among the body of work on the local classroom discourse, very few studies have focused on the secondary sectors. From the perspective of the sociocultural theory (SCT), this article examines the classroom discourse of Chinese middle school English language teaching (ELT) by investigating teacher-student interaction. The transcribed classroom discourse of 8 teachers' reading lessons is qualitatively coded and quantitatively measured. The study draws on a descriptive system focusing on the teacher-led three-part initiation-response-feedback (IRF) structure. The research findings reveal that quite similar discourse patterns are found in the lessons sampled, with the initiation-response-evaluation (IRE) sequence dominating the EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classroom interaction investigated. Theoretically, the paper aims to place the SCT perspectives in the foreground. Pedagogically, it attempts to raise teacher-practitioners' levels of awareness of the use of teacher talk in EFL classroom interaction.展开更多
