Out of the pedagogical concern, many teaching practitioners conducted various studies in different contexts aiming at describing, quantifying, and interpreting teachers' CS between FL and MT in class. However, up till now little attention is paid to students' perceptions and understandings of teachers' CS, which may help improve educators' understanding of the phenomenon in FL classrooms. This paper presents the result of two focus group interviews with groups of Chinese university students at their third and fourth year of college. Following a formal interview outline, issues on students' recall, understanding and evaluation of teachers' CS are addressed in the interview. Based on the analysis of the interviews, a better understanding on foreign language teachers' CS is gained, and students' perceptions on teachers' purposes and reasons for CS are drawn. A framework for investigating foreign language teachers' CS in Chinese universities is proposed with two hypotheses generated.展开更多

The Chi-square test results confirm American sociolinguist J. Fishman's Domain Theory. However, the author holds that the theory should be revised when applied to the study of codeswitching by Chinese English teachers at tertiary level, the original church domain is to be deleted, a novel public affairs domain is to be added to. Meanwhile the author further points out that the SC acquires linguistically functional reversibility whereas English and dialects are functionally irreversible. Finally the. author interprets that the nature of codeswitching turns out the reestablishment of social situation attempting to bring about intended social status and distance to the interlocutors.展开更多

By exploring three types of language variation includingtransliteration from English, phonological variation from dialects and Chinese-English codeswitching, some specific Internet catchphrases are analysed from the perspective of sociolinguistics, in order to summarize their features and causesand further explore their influence on the society.展开更多

Translatability was operationalized in terms of both lexical and semantic cross-transparency. Two separate scales were used to measure the level of concreteness of 123 target English words and their translatability into Chinese. The results of this study showed that word concreteness and translatability are significantly correlated, and that word concreteness determines the extent of semantic closeness between the translation of English and Chinese word pairs. Concreteness might be a variable that influences how translatable a word is between English and Chinese. However, this influence mainly applies to the semantic cross-transparency between the two languages, not the lexical cross-transparency. A link was proposed between the levels of translatability of a translation pair according to concreteness and associated properties. The paper also discusses the implications of the findings for second language learning and teaching, in particular the "translation effect" and teachers' "codeswitching" behavior.展开更多
