The development objectives of the Chinese government have a guiding effect on the school-running characteristics of private colleges and universities. This paper explores the relationship between the characteristics of private colleges and universities and the development objectives of the provincial government, using Jiangsu Province as a case study. All the schools have the consciousness of fully considering the development objectives of Jiangsu Province when formulating the school-running characteristics.Their characteristics all contain some training methods, training courses,or institutional construction aiming at the development objectives. Most universities can support the government’s objectives on employment and innovation.Only a third of the schools provide government support for science research.Private colleges and universities should make full use of the free and flexible advantages of private education, combine them with the continuous changes of policies and markets, and create clear, scientific, and dynamic school-running characteristics,in order to achieve long-term development. 展开更多

Objective:To observe the confidence level prevailing with regard to the practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)among undergraduate nursing students who have undertaken TCM courses at Shanxi Medical University. Methods:This cross-sectional study was conducted at Shanxi University of Chinese Medicine.A questionnaire survey was administered through the Questionnaire Star website(https://www.questionstar.com/).The confidence level was examined from 6 aspects, namely cognition of TCM culture and theory, advantages and characteristics of TCM diagnosis and treatment, feelings about TCM achievements, personal behaviors related to TCM,attitudes toward Western medicine, and the future of TCM.The mean score of the observed items was calculated, and was found to be positively related to the confidence level concerning TCM(the score was between 1 and 5).Results:A total of 120 participants voluntarily enrolled themselves in the study. The results showed that the mean score of observed items were generally about 4.A relatively strong confidence was shown in understating TCM advantages and characteristics in diagnosis and treatment, and also in feelings toward TCM achievements. Conclusions:The majority of nursing undergraduates had confidence in TCM.However, some aspects such as the understanding of TCM culture and the correlation between TCM and Western medicine may need to be improved through education. 展开更多

Chinese medicine is growing rapidly in the United States both as a field of research and in the daily treatment of illnesses. The popularity of Chinese medicine, particularly acupuncture,as a healing mechanism demonstrates American people’s positive experience with Chinese medicine and their embracing it as an alternative to the mainstream Western biomedicine.Chinese medicine is an important part of the Alternative and Complementary Medicine or Integrated Medicine in the United States health system. It is increasingly used and covered by health insurance.Although Chinese medicine has been in the United States since colonial times,it was discriminated against by local authorities. However, things began to change in the 1970s when individual states gradually passed laws to legalize the practice of acupuncture as a healing mechanism.American public interest in Chinese medicine, particularly acupuncture, was aroused by the media’s report of the“magic”power of acupuncture during President Nixon’s visit to China.Non-Asians studied acupuncture in the following decades, which contributed to the establishment of acupuncture as a profession in the American health system. The history of Chinese medicine in the United States illustrates that Chinese and Asian immigrants promoted Chinese medicine in the communities, while Chinese American medical scientists who were trained in biomedicine played an important role in shaping the biomedical method of acupuncture research. This article investigates the changes of Chinese medicine in the United States, with a focus on acupuncture.Situating the discussion in a larger context of social and cultural changes, this study examines the contributions of Chinese immigrants and the popularity of acupuncture in the United States. It analyzes the development of acupuncture practice and research, the professional training in Chinese medicine, and American people’s interest in using Chinese medicine as a reliable healing mechanism to many health problems, including chronic pain, cancer, and drug addictions. 展开更多

Nutritional status of a population or an individual could be assessed by clinical, biochemical and anthropometric means. It is widely used in the monitoring of growth and assessment of the nutritional status of children and adults.Even though a large number of anthropometric studies is done in Nepal and Sri Lanka,on various projects related to the nutritional aspects, but only few have been done on anthropometry and due to lack of information on anthropometric data of Nepalese and Sri Lankan medical students, the present study was initiated at Nepal Medical college and Faculty of Medicine,University of Peradeniya,Sri Lanka. The aim of the study was to measure height and weight of medical students of Nepal Medical College and Faculty of Medicine,University of Peradeniya.A total of 1228(males 681;females 547)medical students participated in the study. The ratio of male to female was 1.24:1.The height was measured,to the nearest 0.1 cm without shoes, using a measuring tape affixed to the wall. The weight was recorded using weighing scale, with minimum clothes and without shoes to the nearest 0.1kg.Two tail unpaired t’test was performed to compare mean values. The percentile values were obtained using Microsoft excel for Windows 98.The age of the students varied from 18-26 years with a mean±SD of 20.77±1.17 and 20.90±1.10 in males and females respectively. The heights of the male and female medical students werel.65±0.08 and 1.61±0.08 and the weight was 59.70±9.26 and 55.54±9.16 respectively. The percentile values obtained for height and weight were compared with National Centre for Health statistics(NCHS) standards. The 50th percentile value of males height and weight corresponded to the 20th percentile and below the 20th percentile values respectively of the NCHS standard. The 50th percentile value of female’s height and weight corresponded to less than 10th and 15th percentiles respectively. The height and weight of only 9 males and 8 females were above the 50th percentile value of NCHS standards. The study reveals that the Nepalese medical students and Sri Lankan medical students are underweight and shorter compared to western standards. 展开更多
