Background: The use of social media platforms for health and nutrition information has become popular among college students. Although social media made information readily accessible in different formats, nutritional misinformation promoted by influencers and non-experts caused negative impact on diet behavior and perception of body image. Previous research indicated that extensive use of social media was positively linked to disordered eating behaviors. Social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram that allow users to follow celebrities intensified exposure to influencers’ messages and images and resulted in negative moods and body dissatisfaction. Objective: This paper aims to explore the impact of social media on college students’ dietary behaviors and body image. Participants: 18 undergraduate students from a public university in the Southern United States were recruited through a mass email. Methods: A cross-sectional qualitative study of three focus groups was conducted. The focus groups were based on guiding open-ended questions. Atlas.ti was used to code and analyze the data using inductive and deductive codes. Results: Three main themes were identified. The conditions theme included elements that explain why and how social media influences the participants’ actions. The actions theme included eating behavior, physical activity, and dietary supplement intake. The consequences theme describes anticipated or actual outcomes of actions such as body image and ideal weight. Conclusions: Social media has had a negative influence on diet behaviors and a positive influence on physical activity. Evidence-based nutrition and weight management information is needed to thwart potential misinformation. 展开更多

We aimed to investigate if college students’ dietary and physical activity adhered to the Chinese Dietary Guidelines, the Composing Editorial Board of Physical Activity Guidelines, and WHO recommendation for NCDs prevention. Methods: A 3-day (2 weekdays and 1 weekend day) 24-hour (24-HRs) dietary recall was conducted to record details of participants’ food consumption. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied to examine the influence of the identified demographic variables (including BMI, gender, major, family monthly income, and place of household registration) on the 8 food groups’ consumption. We analyzed the effect of the various demographic variables on sodium intake by the student’s t-test. The questionnaire, International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ)-Short Form, was utilized to assess participants’ physical activity (PA) level. The Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney was applied to analyze participants’ physical activity. Results: Our research indicated participants consumed much fewer fruits and vegetables and excessive meats on average for both males and females regarding NCDs prevention. Conclusion: Participants’ dietary intake did not comply with the Chinese Dietary Guide-lines recommendation for chronic diseases prevention. Nutrition knowledge and health education are needed for college students. . 展开更多

To get information in the sexual and contraceptive behaviors in Chinese female college students, a randomized cluster sampling was conducted in colleges and universities in Wuhan Area, China, in terms of types of colleges, subjects (literature, sciences, medicines, art etc), and grades etc. A total number of 2450 questionnaires were distributed, with 2365 questionnaires returned being valid. The return rate of valid questionnaires was 96.6 %. The questionnaire investigation was conducted on a multiple-choice and anonymous basis. Data were input into computer and SPSS12.0 software package was employed for statistical analysis. Among the female students, 1196 had the experiences of hugging and kissing (50.57 %) and 423 (17.89 %) had sexual experiences (sexual intercourse). The first sexual intercourse took place at the age of 19.23±1.74 y. There were significant differences in the sexual experiences among the majors of different subjects, with the rate of sexual experiences in art majors (43.17 %) and high-grade students (34.31%) being the highest. The causes of the first sexual intercourse included sexual impulse, curiosity, intention to strengthen the relationship or to show loyalty to boyfriend and sometimes violence. While the motives of the sexual intercourse within the past one year before the investigation were to satisfy the sexual needs and to strengthen the relation with their boyfriends. With both first intercourse and sexual experiences within last one year, the partners of the sexual intercourse were mainly their boyfriends (95.7 % and 97.3 % respectively), but the partners also included acquaintances, "one night stand" partners and customers of sex trade. Some of them had multiple sexual partners, with the highest number of the sexual partners being 11. In the first sexual intercourse of the subjects, 44.0 % of them did not take any contraceptive measures; only 16.4 % of them used condoms. In the sexual intercourse within the last one year, only 44.6 % took contraceptive measures every time they had sexual intercourse. Among those who took contraceptive measures, 64.4 % used condoms. Among those who had sexual intercourse, 101 persons got pregnant, with a rate of pregnancy being 4.3 %, accounting for 23.9 % of all who had sexual intercourse. Among those who got pregnant, 78 persons got pregnant once; the others became pregnant more than two times, the highest being 5 times. There were 122 persons who had inflammation of reproductive system, mostly vaginitis. Other conditions included venereal warts and herpes genitalis. It is concluded that the rate of sexual behaviors is high in female college students and there exist promiscuity, unexpected pregnancy and transmission of STD in the students. 展开更多

Given that alcohol use is highly prevalent at US colleges, we explored factors related to problem drinking behaviors (PDB;binge drinking, driving after drinking, sexual intercourse after drinking) among 4098 Black and White students from two- and four-year colleges who completed an online survey. We found an interaction between race and sex such that, among Whites, females had less PDB than males (B = 0.09, CI: 0.05;0.40, p = 0.01). An interaction between race and school type also existed, such that White students from four-year schools had greater PDB (B = 0.11, CI: 0.20;0.54, p < 0.001). An interaction between race and stress suggested that Black students were more negatively affected by stress in terms of PBD (B = 0.12, CI: 0.01;0.07, p = 0.01). 展开更多

Several reports suggest that college students often have atypical sleep patterns and experience poor sleep quality. We examined the effect of a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) based intervention program to improve sleep quality and overall mental health among college students. The intervention was delivered in the form of e-mail newsletters. Fifty-three students participated in the intervention group, and another 50 students participated in the control group. The intervention group received a lecture on sleep hygiene;once-weekly e-mail newsletters on sleep health topics (sleep hygiene, stimulus control, sleep restriction, sleep titration, and relapse prevention) and were asked to maintain a four-week sleep diary. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), a measure of sleep quality, and the Kessler 6, a measure of psychological distress, were administered before the lecture (as the baseline measurement) and again 16 weeks later (follow-up measurement). PSQI and K6 scores were reduced in the intervention group compared with the control group. A CBT-based sleep health program utilizing e-mail newsletters may work to improve sleep quality and mental health. This program may represent a cost effective way for Japanese students to receive treatment for poor sleep and may also serve to prevent psychiatric problems. 展开更多

"Using technology to support learning" gradually becomes the main trend of technology application and technology-curriculum integration at home and abroad. The empirical research based on newly-established universities shows that college students' usage intention on network course and study behavior is not real. Study behavior of network course is passive and outside stimulation. They are more concerned about the usefulness and relative advantages of the learning mode in the network course learning; however, learning environment of the network course at present still is given on material and tool level. The institutions should, in compliance with the trend of higher education development in the world, actively build learning environment to meet the learning needs of students in the information age, deepen the reform of information technology application and curriculum based on the learner-centered concept, focus on the training of initiative learning of college students, put community impact into full play to promote the integration of the superiority of the material platform and initiative, and finally improve the efficiency and quality of teaching and education. 展开更多

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy(fNIRS)was used to explore the effects of sedentary behavior on the brain functional connectivity characteristics of college students in the resting state after recovering from Corona Virus Disease 2019(COVID-19).Twenty-two college students with sedentary behavior and 22 college students with sedentary behavior and maintenance of exercise habits were included in the analysis;moreover,8 min fNIRS resting-state data were collected.Based on the concentrations of oxyhemoglobin(HbO2)and deoxyhemoglobin(HbR)in the time series, the resting-state functional connection strength of the two groups of subjects, including the prefrontal cortex(PFC)and the lower limb supplementary motor area(LS),as well as the functional activity and functional connections of the primary motor cortex(M1)were calculated. The following findings were demonstrated.(1)Functional connection analysis based on HbO2 demonstrated that in the comparison of the mean functional connection strength of homologous regions of interest(ROIs)between the sedentary group and the exercise group, there was no significant difference in the mean functional strength of the ROIs between the two groups(p>0:05).In the comparison of the mean functional connection strengths of the two groups of heterologous ROIs,the functional connection strengths of the right PFC and the right LS(p?0:0097),the left LS(p?0:0127),and the right M1(p?0:0305)in the sedentary group were significantly greater. The functional connection strength between the left PFC and the right LS(p?0:0312)and the left LS(p?0:0370)was significantly greater.Additionally, the functional connection strength between the right LS and the right M1(p?0:0370)and the left LS(p?0:0438)was significantly greater.(2)Functional connection analysis based on HbR demonstrated that there was no significant difference in functional connection strength between the sedentary group and the exercise group(p>0:05)or between the sedentary group and the exercise group(p>0:05).Similarly,there was no significant difference in the mean functional connection strength of the homologous and heterologous ROIs of the two groups.Additionally, there was no significant difference in the mean ROIs functional strength between the two groups(p>0:05).Experimental results and graphical analysis based on functional connectivity indicate that in this experiment, college student participants who exhibited sedentary behaviors showed an increase in fNIRS signals.Increase in fNIRS signals among college students exhibiting sedentary behaviors may be linked to their status post-SARS-CoV-2 infection and the sedentary context, potentially contributing to the strengthened functional connectivity in the resting-state cortical brain network.Conversely, the fNIRS signals decreased for the participants with exercise behaviors, who maintained reasonable exercise routines under the same conditions as their sedentary counterparts. The results may suggest that exercise behaviors have the potential to mitigate and reduce the impacts of sedentary behavior on the resting-state cortical brain network. 展开更多
