The problems include overuse and overgeneralization of certain words and expressions, and lack of use of some others. These problems are caused by the deficient exposure to authentic (non-)linguistic setting. Introduction In educational theory, as with most things, there exist fashions and trends. Within the field of foreign language teaching the communicative approach is with good reason very fasharable in the west. The name certainly makes it difficult to argue with, who would want to use the ’non-communicative’ approach to teaching a foreign language? The need to communicate in a language is what makes language teaching different from teaching many other subjects. If you study geography, you learn about places, but if you only learn about a language it is not enough.展开更多

Education could be either in English or in regional languages, but children should learn English, because it is seen as the key to the world of opportunities in higher education and employment. The governments need to politically respond to the aspirations of the common masses keeping aside both politicised language policies and theoretical linguistic inputs that encourage one's mother tongue as the ideal medium of instruction. Onerous responsibility lays on men, methods, and materials over which government have the least say, but the practising teachers of English and academics who help bureaucrats in framing language policies in India are solely responsible for non-realization of dreams of the masses. There is something terribly rotten in the state of English-teaching enterprise in India. This paper proposes to examine the present state of affairs in the teaching of English to rural students and to offer constructive alternatives to the existing package of men, materials, and methods.展开更多

The paper aims to explore a holistic course design for business professionals in IBC (Intercultural Business Communication) based on CLT (Communicative Language Teaching). The proposed course design encompasses three-dimensional contents: comprehensive language and expertise training, intercultural communicative competence cultivation, and intercultural PBL (project-based learning). A survey is conducted in a training program of Chinese business professionals in international institutions. Three principles are identified: (1) BE teaching is need-oriented, so the pedagogical methods should be tailored to meet the international workplace requirements; (2) The linguistic and professional knowledge acquisition is achieved through communicative function of the target language; and (3) Learners' participation in intercultural PBL can stimulate learners' interest and enhance their operational capabilities. The findings of the case study indicate that a holistic course design is: (1) Course syllabus should not be formed without taking the leamers' expectation and feedback into consideration; (2) Teaching strategies should be innovated to enhance learners' communicative confidence and competence; and (3) Teaching materials should be adapted and subjected to modification according to the authentic language used in intercultural settings. The study outcomes may also shed light on other disciplines of ESP teaching.展开更多

In this regard, both the approaches to teaching foreign languages should be reconsidered, and also training programs that meet the requirements of future specialists should be created. One of the possible ways out is to use the competence-based approach, i.e., forming a set of special competences in future professionals to solve practical problems. For training a competitive IT-specialist, in teaching foreign languages it is necessary to form a number of language subcompetences in students that are on the basis of their professional competence. The proposed model can be used for teaching any foreign language, where the language component is invariable, and is filled with professional content.展开更多
