A Model of the Fatigue Life Distribution of Composite Laminates Based on Their Static Strength Distribution 被引量:7

The reasons of the static strength dispersion and the fatigue life dispersion of composite laminates are analyzed in this article. It is concluded that the inner original defects, which derived from the manufacturing process of composite laminates, are the common and major reason of causing the random distributions of the static strength and the fatigue life. And there is a correlative relation between the two distributions. With the study of statistical relationship between the fatigue loading and the fatigue life in the uniform confidence level and the same survival rate S-N curves of material, the relationship between the static strength distribution and the fatigue life distribution through a material S-N curve model has been obtained. And then the model which is used to describe the distributions of fatigue life of composites, based on their distributions of static strength, is set up. This model reasonably reflects the effects of the inner original defects on the static strength dispersion and on the fatigue life dispersion of composite laminates. The experimental data of three kinds of composite laminates are employed to verify this model, and the results show that this model can predict the random distributions of fatigue life for composites under any fatigue loads fairly well. 展开更多

A three-dimensional cyclic symmetry finite element model of titanium-matrix composites(TMCs) ring was developed to investigate the stress distribution and burst failure. The effects of fiber volume fractions, reinforced areas, thermal residual stresses and two different temperatures on stress distribution were studied. The burst speed was obtained through analyzing the hoop tensile stresses under a series of rotating speeds. The results indicate that at the two different temperatures, the influences of fiber volume fractions and reinforced areas on stress level and distribution are different. Some proposals are provided for the structure design of the TMCs ring. With regard to thermal residual stresses, a larger reinforced area is an advisable choice for design of the ring at higher temperature. 展开更多

The distribution of SiC particles in Al-SiC composite can greatly influence the mechanical performances of Al-SiC composite. To realize the homogeneous distribution of SiC particles in stir-casting Al-SiC composite, semisolid stir casting of Al-4.25 vol.%SiC composite was conducted using a special electromagneticmechanical stirring equipment made by our team, in which there are three uniformly-distributed blades with a horizontal tilt angle of 25 ° to mechanically raise the SiC particles by creating an upward movement of slurry under electromagnetic stirring. The microstructure of the as-cast Al-SiC composites was observed by Scanning Electron Mcroscopy(SEM). The volume fraction of SiC particles was measured by image analysis using the Quantimet 520 Image Processing and Analysis System. The tensile strength of the Al-4.25 vol.%SiC composites was measured by tensile testing. Results show that the Al-4.25 vol.%SiC composites with the homogeneous distrbutin of SiC particles can be obtained by the electromagnetic-mechanical stirring casting with the speed of 300 and 600 r·min-1 at 620 °C. The differences between the volume fraction of Si C particles at the top of ingot and that at the bottom are both ~0.04 vol.% with the stirring speed of 300 and 600 r·min-1, which are so small that the distribution of SiC particles can be seen as the homogeneous. The tensile strength of the Al matrix is enhanced by 51.2% due to the uniformly distributed SiC particles. The porosity of the composite mainly results from the solidification shrinkage of slurry and it is less than 0.04 vol.%. 展开更多

A modified mixed strengthening model was proposed for describing the yield strength of particle reinforced aluminum matrix composites.The strengthening mechanisms of the composites were analyzed based on the microstructures and compression mechanical properties.The distribution uniformity of reinforcements and cooperation relationship among dislocation mechanisms were considered in the modified mixed strengthening model by introducing a distribution uniformity factor u and a cooperation coefficient fc,respectively.The results show that the modified mixed strengthening model can accurately describe the yield strengths of Al3Ti/2024Al composites with a relative deviation less than1.2%,which is much more accurate than other strengthening models.The modified mixed model can also be used to predict the yield strength of Al3Ti/2024Al composites with different fractions of reinforcements. 展开更多

The composites were prepared through pressure infiltration of liquid copper into diamond preforms with a mixture of 40 and 100 pm-size diamonds. The permeability of the preforms with different coarse-to-fine volume ratios of diamonds was investigated. The thermal conductivity of the diamond/copper composites with bimodal size distribution was compared to the theoretical value derived from an analytical model developed by Chu. It is predicted that the diamond/copper composites could reach a higher thermal conductivity and their surface roughness could be improved by applying bimodal diamond particle sizes. 展开更多

The thermal residual stresses and the stress distributions of short fiber reinforced metal matrix composite under tensile and compressive loadings were studied using large strain axisymmetric elasto plastic finite element method. It is demonstrated that the thermal residual stresses can result in asymmetrical stress distributions and matrix plasticity. The thermal residual stresses decrease the stress transfer in tension and enhance the stress transfer in compression. The fiber volume fraction has more important effects on the thermal residual stresses and the stress distributions under tensile and compressive loadings than the fiber aspect ratio and the fiber end distance. Adopting a steel-anchor beam and steel corbel composite structure in the anchor zone on pylon is one of the key techniques for the design of Jintang bridge, a cable-stayed bridge in Zhoushan, China. In order to ensure the safety of the steel-concrete composite structure, a stud connector model for the joint section was put forward. Experiments were conducted to obtain the relation between load and slip of specimen, the failure pattern of stud connector, the yield bearing capacity and ultimate bearing capacity of a single stud, etc. The whole process of the structural behavior of the specimen was comprehensively analyzed. The features of the internal force distribution in the steel-concrete composite structure and the strain distribution of stud connector under different loads were emphatically studied. The test results show that the stud connector is applicable for the steel-concrete composite structure for pylon of Jintang bridge. The stud has a good ductility performance and a obvious yield process before its destruction. The stud connector basically works in a state of elasticity under a load less than the yield load. 展开更多

Nd content was varied in Nd13.2-xFe80.8+xB6(x = 0, 0.5, 1, and 1.5) to optimize the magnetic properties of sintered Nd–Fe–B/Tb–Fe–B composite magnets, which were prepared by mixing 9 g of Nd–Fe–B with 1 g of Tb17Fe75B8 powder.In conventional magnets, by reducing Nd content, the coercivity of 10.4 kOe in Nd13.2Fe80.8B6 decreases to 7.2 kOe in Nd12.2Fe81.8B6;meanwhile, in Nd–Fe–B/Tb–Fe–B magnets the coercivity does not decrease when reducing Nd content.In the intergranular phase, the Tb content increases owing to the reducing Nd content of the Nd–Fe–B alloy in the sintered composite magnets.Therefore, the excess Tb in Tb17Fe75B8 enters the intergranular phase, and more Tb atoms can substitute for Nd at the grain boundary of the Nd–Fe–B phase, leading to a more significant increase in coercivity.The remanence increases with reducing Nd content, and the energy product of 39.1 MGOe with a high coercivity of 21.0 kOe is obtained in Nd12.2Fe81.8B6/Tb17Fe75B8 magnets.These investigations show that magnetic properties can be further improved by regulating the element distribution in sintered composite magnets. 展开更多

This study investigates the effect of tool rotational speed(TRS)on particle distribution in nugget zone(NZ)through quantitative approach and its consequences on the mechanical property of friction stir welded joints of AA6092/17.5 SiCp-T6 composite.6 mm thick plates are welded at a constant tool tilt angle of 2°and tool traverse speed of 1 mm/s by varying the TRS at 1000 rpm,1500 rpm and 2000 rpm with a taper pin profiled tool.Microstructure analysis shows large quantity of uniformly shaped smaller size SiC particle with lower average particle area which are homogeneously distributed in the NZ.The fragmentation of bigger size particles has been observed because of abrading action of the hard tool and resulting shearing effect and severe stress generation due to the rotation of tool.The particles occupy maximum area in the matrix compared to that of the base material(BM)due to the redistribution of broken particles as an effect of TRS.The migration of particles towards the TMAZ-NZ transition zone has been also encountered at higher TRS(2000 rpm).The microhardness analysis depicts variation in average hardness from top to bottom of the NZ,minimum for 1500 rpm and maximum for 2000 rpm.The impact strength at 1000 rpm and 1500 rpm remains close to that of BM(21.6 J)while 2000 rpm shows the accountable reduction.The maximum joint efficiency has been achieved at 1500 rpm(84%)and minimum at 1000 rpm(68%)under tensile loading.Fractographic analysis shows mixed mode of failure for BM,1000 rpm and 1500 rpm,whereas 2000 rpm shows the brittle mode of failure. 展开更多

The perturbation method is used to study the localization of electric field distribution and the effective nonlinear response of graded composites under an external alternating-current(AC) and direct-current(DC) electric field E app = E 0(1 + sin ωt).The dielectric profile of the cylindrical inclusions is modeled by function ε i(r) = C k r k(r ≤ a),where r is the radius of the cylindrical inclusion,and C k,k,a are parameters.In the dilute limit,the local potentials and the effective nonlinear responses at all harmonics are derived.Meanwhile,the general effective nonlinear responses are also derived and compared with the effective nonlinear responses at harmonics under the AC and DC external field.It is found that the effective nonlinear AC and DC responses at harmonics can be calculated by those of the general effective nonlinear of the graded composites under the external DC electric field.Moreover,the obtained local electrical fields show that the electrical field distribution in the cylindrical inclusions is controllable,and the maximum of the electric field inside the cylinder is at its center. 展开更多

A two-phase numerical model coupled with heat transfer was presented to describe the radial distribution of SiC particles on centrifugally-cast metal matrix composite,and a transverse static magnetic field was concurrently imposed to induce electromagnetic stirring of the melt as it revolved with the mold.Meanwhile,experimental observations were also carried out to examine the radial distribution of SiC particles in pure aluminum.The effects of the imposed magnetic field,particle size and the matrix metals were discussed.The computational results show that the particles tend to be congregated by the centrifugal force,and both increasing the imposed magnetic field and decreasing the particle size tend to result in even distribution of the particles.With the magnetic field varying from 0 to 1 T and the particle size from 550 to 180 μm,a uniform distribution of the particles in the aluminum matrix can be obtained among the computational results.The matrix metal can also influence the particle distributions due to the difference in physical properties of metals.Experimental observation shows similar tendency of particle distributions in aluminum matrix influenced by magnetic field and particle size.However,the chilling effect from the mold wall results in an outer particle-free zone,which is not involved in the numerical model. 展开更多

The multiple cracking and deflection hardening performance of polyvinyl alcohol fiber reinforced engineered cementitious composites(PVA-ECC)under four-point flexural loading have been investigated.Matrices with different binder combinations and W/B ratios(from 0.44 to 0.78)providing satisfactory PVA fiber dispersion were specially designed.Effect of pre-existing flaw size distribution modification on deflection hardening behavior was comparatively studied by adding 3 mm diameter polyethylene beads into the mixtures(6%by total volume).Natural flaw size distributions of composites without beads were determined by cross sectional analysis.The crack number and crack width distributions of specimens after flexural loading were characterized and the possible causes of changes in multiple cracking and deflection hardening behavior by flaw size distribution modification were discussed.Promising results from the view point of deflection hardening behavior were obtained from metakaolin incorporated and flaw size distribution modified PVA-ECCs prepared with W/B=0.53.The dual roles of W/B ratio and superplasticizer content on flaw size distribution,cracking potential and fiber-matrix bond behavior were evaluated.Flaw size distribution modification is found beneficial in terms of ductility improvement at an optimized W/B ratio. 展开更多

The 21 dog-bone specimens with different fiber contents and fiber distribution (random chopped fiber or directional continuous filament fiber bundles) were designed and tested under uniaxial tension using domestic PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) fiber.High fiber content exerted positive influences on cracking stress,peak stress and deformation capacity of specimens with random chopped fiber,compared with the decrease shown in cracking stress of specimens containing directional fiber bundles.There were multiple cracks in specimens containing directional fiber bundles,while only 1-2 typical cracks could be shown in chopped fiber specimens after being broken.Random chopped fiber connected more closely with matrix compared with that only part of fiber bundles could contact with matrix.Double-fold line model and parabolic model could be used simultaneously to fit well with the uniaxial tension constitutive relations of engineered cementitious composite (ECC).Although the performance of PVA produced in China can not reach to the same level of those from Japan,there exists certain practical value in engineering according to its contribution to deformability of structure. 展开更多

In situ(α-Al2O3+ZrB2)/Al composites with network distribution were fabricated using low-energy ball milling and reaction hot pressing. Differential thermal analysis(DTA) was used to study the reaction mechanisms in the Al–Zr O2–B system. X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) in conjunction with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDX) were used to investigate the composite phases, morphology, and microstructure of the composites. The effect of matrix network size on the microstructure and mechanical properties was investigated. The results show that the optimum sintering parameters to complete reactions in the Al–Zr O2–B system are 850°C and 60 min. In situ-synthesized α-Al2O3 and Zr B2 particles are dispersed uniformly around Al particles, forming a network microstructure; the diameters of the α-Al2O3 and Zr B2 particles are approximately 1–3 μm. When the size of Al powder increases from 60–110 μm to 150–300 μm, the overall surface contact between Al powders and reactants decreases, thereby increasing the local volume fraction of reinforcements from 12% to 21%. This increase of the local volume leads to a significant increase in microhardness of the in situ(α-Al2O3–Zr B2)/Al composites from Hv 163 to Hv 251. 展开更多

Analysis is carried out by means of classical and computer quantification metallographic image analysis methods. The hollow cylinders of TiB-Ti composites with a gradient distribution of Ti phase were synthesized by the combination of traditional slurry spray with centrifugal forming process.The influences of the concentration of sodium hexametaphosphate(SHMP),the concentration of polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)and solid content(20 vol%-35 vol%)on the rheological properties of the TiB_(2)-Ti composite slurries were investigated.Slurries with low viscosity,weak thixotropy and shear-thinning behaviour were obtained for facilitating the slurry spraying process.The effects of different centrifugal conditions on the migration of components during the forming process were studied.The phase composition and the elements distribution of the prepared samples were characterized by the energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer.The observations revealed that the samples fabricated at 1500 r/min for 3 min had a significant composition variation.For two-phase systems with small density differences and large particle size variation,centrifugal time was more important than centrifugal speed in forming a continuous gradient structure. 展开更多

In this paper,stress distribution is examined in the case where infinite length co-phase periodically curved two neighboring hollow fibers are contained by an infinite elastic body.The midline of the fibers is assumed to be in the same plane.Using the three-dimensional geometric linear exact equations of the elasticity theory,research is carried out by use of the piecewise homogeneous body model.Moreover,the body is assumed to be loaded at infinity by uniformly distributed normal forces along the hollow fibers.On the inter-medium between the hollow fibers and matrix surfaces,complete cohesion conditions are satisfied.The boundary form perturbation method is used to solve the boundary value problem.In this investigation,numerical results are obtained by considering the zeroth and first approximations to calculate the self-equilibrium shear stresses and normal stress at the contact surfaces between the hollow fibers and matrix.Numerous numerical results have been obtained and interpreted about the effects of the interactions between the hollow fibers on this distribution. 展开更多

It is important for the safety of transmission system to accurately calculate single-phase earth fault current distribution.Features of double sided elimination method were illustrated.Quantitative calculation of single-phase earth fault current distribution and case verification were accomplished by using the loop method.Influences of some factors,such as single-phase earth fault location and ground resistance of poles,on short-circuit current distribution were discussed.Results show that:1) results of the loop method conform to those of double sided elimination method;2) the fault location hardly influences macro-distribution of short-circuit current.However,current near fault location is evidently influenced;and 3) the short-circuit current distribution is not so sensitive to the ground resistance of poles. 展开更多

Tintinnids were enumerated and identified in samples collected from 36 stations between 18°-22°N, 107°-122 °E in the northern South China Sea (NSCS). 44 species belonging to 24 genera of tintinnids were recorded. The dominant species were He/icostome/la /onga and Tintinnopsis radix. Tintinnids abundance ranged from 0 to 2 200 cell/L, and mean abundance was 221cell/L in the surface water. Tintinnids abundance and species numbers decreased from coast to offshore. Upwelling and Pearl River discharge influenced the distribution of tintinnids by regulating nutrients supply. Maximum abundance (2 200 cell/L) was found in the surface water of A1. Tintinnids abundance showed positive relationship with chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration, and no significant relationship was found between tintinnids abundance and temperature. 展开更多

Based on oceanographic survey data in June 2012 in the Lembeh Strait, the zooplankton ecological characteristics such as species composition, individual abundance, dominant species and distribution were analyzed. The results showed that 183 species(including 4 sp.) had been recognized, most of them belonged to copepoda.Cnidaria followed with 43 species(including 1 sp.) were identified. The average abundance of zooplankton was(150.47±58.91) ind./m3. As to the horizontal distribution, the abundance of the zooplankton was higher in the southern waters than in the northern waters. The dominant species in the study area were Lensia subtiloides,Sagitta enflata, Lucifer intermedius, Oikopleura rufescens, Diphyes chamissoni, Creseis acicula, Subeucalanus subcrassus, Temora discaudata, Aglaura hemistoma, Doliolum denticulatum, Canthocalanus pauper, Oikopleura longicauda and Nanomia bijuga. Zooplankton biodiversity indexes were higher in study area than previous study in the other regions. The findings from this study provide important baseline information for future research and monitoring programs. 展开更多
