Much effort has been devoted to researching the causes and mechanisms of reinforcement corrosion and to the questions of durability for concrete structures, but relatively little attention has been devoted to the problem of assessing the effect of bond loss due to corrosion on the structural behavior of corroded elements. From the test results on corroded specimens, the mechanism of degradation in bond behavior between corroded bars and concrete, and the effects of bond loss on structural performances are summarized. Results show that corrosion level, cover depth-W-bar diameter ratio, surface condition of re/nforcement, stirrups, etc. can influence the bond behavior of corroded bars. In addition, the deterioration in bond due to corrosion may induce reduction in bearing capacity, degradation of serviceability, and the loss in ductility for steel-corroded concrete members.展开更多

This study includes a preliminary analysis of chemically treated water in existing concrete structures, and another after the application of the method and using materials for the structures in future. One of the priorities was to examine the existing concrete structures by using nondestructive and destructive methods. In this experimental study, specimens are fabricated with the lap-splice length as test variable in relation with the calculation of the lap-splice length for 180- MPa UHPC. Moreover, specimens are also fabricated with the cover depth as test variable to evaluate the effect of the cover depth on the UHPC flexural members. The load-displacement curves are analyzed for each of these test variables to compute the lap-splice length proposed in the K-UHPC structural design guideline and to evaluate the influence of the cover depth on the flexural members. As a result, the stability of the structural behavior can be significantly enhanced by increasing slightly the cover depth specification of the current UHPC Structure Design Guideline from the maximum value between 1.5 times of rebar diameter and 20 mm to the maximum value between 1.5 times of rebar diameter and 25 mm.展开更多

Interface fracture properties were evaluated with established data reduction procedures. The proposed test method is primarily for use in evaluating the effects of freeze-thaw (F-T) and wet-dry (W-D) cycles that are the accelerated aging protocols on the mode-I fracture of carbon FRP-concrete bonded interfaces. The results of the mode-I fracture tests of F-T and W-D cycle-conditioned specimens show that both the critical load and fracture energy decrease as the number of cycles increases, and their degradation pattern has a nearly linear relationship with the number of cycles. However, compared with the effect of the F-T cycles, the critical load and fracture energy degrade at a slower rate with W-D cycles, which suggests that F-T cyclic conditioning causes more deterioration of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP)-concrete bonded interface. After 50 and 100 conditioning cycles, scaling of concrete was observed in all the specimens subjected to F-T cycles, but not in those subjected to W-D cycles. The examination of interface fracture surfaces along the bonded interfaces with varying numbers of F-T and W-D conditioning cycles shows that (1) cohesive failure of CFRP composites is not observed in all fractured surfaces; (2) for the control specimens that have not been exposed to any conditioning cycles, the majority of interface failure is a result of cohesive fracture of concrete (peeling of concrete from the concrete substrate), which means that the cracks mostly propagate within the concrete; and (3) as the number of F-T or W-D conditioning cycles increases, adhesive failure along the interface begins to emerge and gradually increases. It is thus concluded that the fracture properties (i.e., the critical load and fracture energy) of the bonded interface are controlled primarily by the concrete cohesive fracture before conditioning and by the adhesive interface fracture after many cycles of F-T or W-D conditioning. As demonstrated in this study, a test method using 3PBB specimens combined with a fictitious crack model and experimental conditioning protocols for durability can be used as an effective qualification method to test new hybrid material interface bonds and to evaluate durability-related effects on the interfaces.展开更多

Five of these beams were monotonically tested until shear failure to investigate the static shear performance including the failure pattern, loaddeflection behavior, shear capacity, shear crack width and shear ductility. The experimental results show that these beams have superior shear capacity, crack control ability and shear ductility. To study the shear performance under repeated overloading, seven PSURC beams were loaded in cyclic test simultaneously. The overall shear performance of cycled beams is similar to that of uncycled beams at low load level but different at high load level. The shear capacity and crack control ability of cycled beams at high load level are reduced, whereas the shear ductility is improved. In addition, the influences of variables including the degree of prestress, stirrup ratio and load level on the shear performance of both uncycled and cycled beams were also discussed and compared, respectively.展开更多

For this reason the definition of improved local models taking into account all these local aspects is a fundamental prerequisite for advanced assessment of r.c. structures. A numerical procedure which allows to predict the relative displacement between steel reinforcement and the surrounding concrete in a reinforced concrete element, once assigned the stress in the naked steel bar and the bond-slip law is discussed. The proposed procedure is implemented referring to two relevant experimental case studies, demonstrating that it is able to predict satisfactorily actual strain fields and slips along the investigated reinforced concrete elements.展开更多

Time-history analysis was performed to simulate the seismic failure process of a gravity dam that was assumed to be reinforced at the locations of slope discontinuity at the downstream surface, part of the upstream face, and the dam heel. A damage model considering the influence of concrete heterogeneity was used to model the nonlinearity of concrete. A bond-slip model was applied to the interface between FRP and concrete, and the reinforcement mechanism was analyzed through the bond stress and the stress in FRP. The results of the crack pattern, displacement, and acceleration of the reinforced dam were compared with those of the original one. It is shown that FRP, as a reinforcement material, postpones the occurrence of cracks and slows the crack propagation, and that cracks emanating from the upstream surface and downstream surface are not connected, meaning that the reinforced dam can retain water-impounding function when subjected to the earthquake. Anti-seismic reinforcement with FRP is therefore beneficial to improving the seismic resistant capability of concrete dams.展开更多

The fragmentation degree and particle-size distribution of concrete blocks under explosion loads must be considered during mining to ensure safety. In this study, the impulse is calculated based on the relationship between overpressure and time, and the impact energy of the explosion wave is obtained based on blast theory. Subsequently, the Mohr-Coulomb shear strength fracture criterion is introduced to determine the ultimate shear stress of the concrete materials, and an empirical model that can effectively calculate the energy consumption of concrete blocks under explosion loads is established. Furthermore, concrete fragments with different particle sizes under explosion scenarios are quantitatively predicted with the principle of energy conservation. Finally, explosion tests with different top standoff distances are conducted, and the concrete fragments after the explosion tests are recovered, sieved, weighed, and counted to obtain experimental data. The effectiveness of the fragment empirical model is verified by comparing the model calculation results with the experimental data. The proposed model can be used as a reference for civil blasting, protective engineering design, and explosion-damage assessment.展开更多

Test results show that the PPP-BOTDA can provide a precise description on the strain distribution of steel rebar and concrete, exhibiting the ability for crack detection. Moreover, structural deformation can be obtained indirectly by accumulating the distributed strains along the optical fiber, thus the deflection curves of the concrete girder during the loading process are obtained. Suggestions with regards to the application of the PPP-BOTDA in strain measurements and crack monitoring for civil infrastructures are given.
