However, the models which have been existed are lack of objectivity due to that they are mostly studied based on the statistical methodology characterization for rough surfaces and simple partition for the deformation formats of contact asperity. In this paper, a fractal prediction model is developed for the thermal contact conductance between two rough surfaces based on the rough surface being described by three-dimensional Weierstrass and Mandelbrot fractal function and assuming that there are three kinds of asperity deformation modes: elastic, elastoplastic and fully plastic. Influences of contact load and contact area as well as fractal parameters and material properties on the thermal contact conductance are investigated by using the presented model. The investigation results show that the thermal contact conductance increases with the increasing of the contact load and contact area. The larger the fractal dimension, or the smaller the fractal roughness, the larger the thermal contact conductance is. The thermal contact conductance increases with decreasing the ratio of Young's elastic modulus to the microhardness. The results obtained indicate that the proposed model can effectively predict the thermal contact conductance at the interface, which provide certain reference to the further study on the issue of heat transfer between contact surfaces.展开更多

The critical areas of a single asperity are scale dependent, with an increase in the contact load and contact area, a transition from elastic, elastoplastic to full plastic deformation takes place in this order. In considering the size distribution function, analytic expression between the total contact load and the real contact area on the contact surface is obtained. The elastic, elastoplastic and full plastic contact load are obtained by the critical elastic contact area of the biggest asperity and maximun contact area of a single asperity. The results show that a rough surface is firstly in elastic deformation. As the load increases, elastoplastic or full plastic deformation takes place. For constant characteristic length scale G, the slope of load-area relation is proportional to fractal dimension D. For constant fractal dimension D, the slope of load-area relation is inversely proportional to G. For constant D and G, the slope of load-area relation is inversely proportional to property of the material ~b, namely with the same load, the material of rough surface is softer, and the total contact area is larger. The contact mechanics model provides a foundation for study of the friction, wear and seal performance of rough surfaces.展开更多

To improve the calculation accuracy of the contact force model, the surface roughness of the bonding surface and the energy loss that necessarily occurs during the impact process should be considered com?prehensively. On this basis, a modified nonlinear spring damping model was established based on the Lankarani–Nikravesh contact force model. The laws influencing the surface roughness, recovery coe cient, initial velocity, and clearance size on the impact force were revealed, and were compared with the Lankarani–Nikravesh model and a hybrid model using MATLAB. The maximum impact force was obtained using a modified contact force model under di erent initial velocities, di erent clearances, and di erent degrees of surface roughness, and the calculated results were then compared with the experiment results. This study indicates that the modified model can be used more widely than other models, and is suitable for both large and small clearances. An array of nonlinear springs, of which the force-separation law obeys the Lennard–Jones potential, is introduced to account for the interfacial adhesion. For fractal rough surfaces, the interfacial interaction is generally attractive for large mean gaps, but turns repulsive as the gap continuously shrinks. The interfacial interactions at the turning point corresponding to the spontaneous contact are shown for various surfaces. For relatively smooth surfaces, the probability density distributions of repulsion and attraction are nearly symmetric. However, for rougher surfaces, the simulation results suggest a uniform distribution for attraction but a monotonously decreasing distribution with a long tail for repulsion. The pull-off force rises with increasing ratio of the work of adhesion to the equilibrium distance, whereas decreases for solids with a higher elastic modulus and a larger surface roughness. The current study will be helpful for understanding the adhesion of various types of rough solids.展开更多

Associated rules between rough surface characterization parameters(correlation length, and root mean square deviation) and contact characteristic parameters(contact area, maximum contact pressure, contact number, and contact width) of two rough cylinders are mainly studied. The contact model of rough cylinders is deduced based on GW model. As there is no analytical solution for the pressure distribution equation, an approximate iterative solution method for the pressure distribution is adopted. Furthermore, the quantitative relationships among the correlation length, the root mean square deviation, the asperity radius of curvature and the asperity density are also obtained based on a numerical simulation method. The maximum contact pressure and the contact number decrease with the increase of correlation length, while the contact width and the contact area are on the contrary. The contact width increases with the increase of root mean square deviation while the maximum contact pressure, the contact area and the contact number decrease.展开更多

Scanning electron microscopy(SEM) images show that the electrodeposited copper films follow "island growth mode" in the form of microdots and their number densities increase with the rise of the negative deposition potentials. At an electrodeposition potential of-0.2 V the number density of the copper microdots are found to be 4.5×104cm^(-2)that are increased to 2.9×105cm^(-2)at a potential of-0.8 V. Systematically, the distances between the microdots are found to be reduced from 26.6 μm to 11.03 μm with the increase of negative electrochemical potential from-0.2 V to-0.8 V. X-ray diffraction(XRD) analyses have confirmed the formation of copper stearate on the stearic acid modified copper films. The roughness of the stearic acid modified electrodeposited copper films is found to increase with the increase in the density of the copper microdots. A critical copper deposition potential of-0.6 V in conjunction with the stearic acid modification provides a surface roughness of 6.2 μm with a water contact angle of 157?, resulting in superhydrophobic properties on the aluminum substrates.展开更多

For the high-speed condition in particular, it is important to understand the influence of the surface properties on the scuffing resistance. If the effective surface profile to improve the lubrication property was found, the metal surfaces could be obtained with both surface strength and surface lubricity. Herein, the influence of surface properties modified with fine shot peening, which can form the arbitrary surface profile, on the scuffing resistance in the rolling-sliding contact machine element, was investigated. The scuffing test was performed using a two-cylinder rolling contact test machine. In a specific sliding, a faster roller of 60% and a sliding velocity of 1.75 m/s were utilized. The scuffing test results with shot-peened test rollers and those with non-shot-peened test roller were compared. The influence of the surface roughness of the shot-peened test roller was also discussed. We found that the shot-peened roller had a better scuffing resistance compared with the roller without the shot-peening process.展开更多

The elastic deformation of the system is modeled by using continuum contact mechanics, while the stochastic behavior of adhesive bonds is modeled by using Bell's type of exponential bond association/dissociation rates. It is found that for sufficiently small adhesion patch size or stress concentration index, the adhesion strength is insensitive to the wavelength but decreases with the amplitude of surface undulation, and that for large adhesion patch size or stress concentration index, there exist optimal values of the surface wavelength and amplitude for maximum adhesion strength.展开更多

Friction measurements were also conducted using a modified tribotester based on strip sliding between tools. Four different tool surfaces were tested under similar contact conditions regarding contact area, normal pressure, sliding speed, lubricant and surface characteristics to calculate the friction coefficient between the tool surface and a high strength low alloy steel sheet HSLA 380. The results showed that friction coefficient varies over a wide range with different lubricating conditions and different sliding velocities. For some sliding velocities, the coefficient of friction is stable and low, while for others it is unstable and higher. Results of the experiments reveal that this novel tribotester is a very useful tool to evaluate and compare the friction between steel sheet and tool surfaces in alloyed steel for cold working applications. The outcomes have only small dispersion within the different test series, which indicates a stable process with good repeatability. The test method enables comparison of different surface finishes and treatments, lubricants and coatings in terms of friction and galling under conditions similar to those found in sheet metal forming processes. The four different types of surfaces considered for this study were grinded, polished, nitrided and quenched/tempered. The main difference among the tested tools in this work was the surface roughness, which was found to have a strong influence on friction.展开更多

Surface roughness can be quantitatively characterized by fractal dimension D and the intercept A on the log-log plot of variance: the former describes the irregularity and the later is statistically analogues to the slopes of asperities. In order to confirm the effects of these fractalparameters on the properties and mechanical behavior of rock joints, which have been observed in experiments under both normal andshear loadings, a theoretic model of rock joint is proposed on the basis of contact mechanics. The shape of asperity at contact is assumed to have a sinusoidal form in its representative scale r, with fractal dimension D and the intercept A. The model considers different local contact mechanisms, such as elastic deformation, frictional sliding and tensile fracture of the asperity. The empirical evolution law of surface damage developed in experiment is implemented into the model to up-date geometry of asperity in loading history. The effects of surface roughness characterized by D, A and re on normal and shear deformation of rock joint have been elaborated.展开更多

The contact width increases with the increase of root mean square deviation while the maximum contact pressure, the contact area and the contact number decrease.

文摘Superhydrophobic aluminum surfaces have been prepared by means of electrodeposition of copper on aluminum surfaces, followed by electrochemical modification using stearic acid organic molecules. A critical copper deposition potential of-0.6 V in conjunction with the stearic acid modification provides a surface roughness of 6.2 μm with a water contact angle of 157?, resulting in superhydrophobic properties on the aluminum substrates.

文摘The sealing performance of contact interfaces plays the most important role in the design and operation of the in-situ pressure-preserved coring system. To meet the demand of ultra-high pressure-retained coring for oil and gas exploration in deep reservoirs,a quantitative analysis of the contact mechanical behavior of the pressure controller was performed.Based on the micro-contact theory of rough surfaces,a three-dimensional numerical model of the rough contact interface between the valve cover and the valve seat was constructed, and the micro-contact behavior of the metal contact surfaces was comprehensively studied. The results show that the actual contact area of the valve interface increases with the increase of surface roughness before the critical contact point, but decreases after that.Compared with the real contact model with double rough surfaces, although the simplified hard-contact model with a single rough surface can reflect the micro-contact behavior of the rough surface to a certain extent,it cannot truly reveal the microchannel morphology between the sealing interfaces under pressure. Therefore, the realistic double-rough-surface model should be recommended to evaluate the sealing performance of coring tools, particularly for high pressure conditions. The material properties of valves have a significant effect on the contact characteristics of rough surfaces, which suggested that the actual contact area decreases with the increase of the elastic modulus of the contact material under the same loading conditions. The knowledge of this work could help to enhance the seal design of pressure controllers for in-situ pressure-preserved coring.
文摘Recently, gears of high strength, reliability, and surface-damage-resistant under severe service conditions are required to achieve the weight saving and downsizing of a product. We found that the shot-peened roller had a better scuffing resistance compared with the roller without the shot-peening process.

文摘This paper aims at developing a stochastic-elastic model of a soft elastic body adhering on a wavy surface via a patch of molecular bonds. The elastic deformation of the system is modeled by using continuum contact mechanics, while the stochastic behavior of adhesive bonds is modeled by using Bell's type of exponential bond association/dissociation rates. It is found that for sufficiently small adhesion patch size or stress concentration index, the adhesion strength is insensitive to the wavelength but decreases with the amplitude of surface undulation, and that for large adhesion patch size or stress concentration index, there exist optimal values of the surface wavelength and amplitude for maximum adhesion strength.
文摘Current work is focused on the influence of friction in deep drawing process. The main difference among the tested tools in this work was the surface roughness, which was found to have a strong influence on friction.
文摘The present study shows that naturally developed fracture surfaces in rocks display the properties of self-affine fractals. The effects of surface roughness characterized by D, A and re on normal and shear deformation of rock joint have been elaborated.

文摘In this paper, the effect of surface roughness on sealing clearance, pressure distribution, friction torque and leakage is studied by the thermal-elasto-hydrodynamic mixed lubrication model.A convergent nominal clearance is formed by the pressure deformation and thermal deformation of the seal faces. This causes more serious wear in the inner side than that of the outer side of the contact area.Mass leakage increases with the growing of the surface roughness. The temperature and thermal deformation on the seal surface increases substantially if the roughness is reduced. The contact mechanical seals have consistent performance when the standard deviation of surface roughness is approximately 0.2μm.In order to validate the theoretical analysis model,a method combining the measurement of three-dimensioned profile and Raman spectrum is proposed.
