In 2019, an investigation by the U.S. House of Representatives revealed major infant food conglomerates had products with high levels of arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury, posing concerns for infants’ vulnerability to the neurotoxic effects of these metals. Trends of laboratory-detected heavy metals were analyzed in children aged zero to five from 1999-2020, providing insights on heavy metal contamination in infant food products. Utilizing National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data, mean heavy metal levels in children were calculated, considering gender, race, and income-to-poverty ratio as proxies for assessing associations with increasing heavy metal rates in infant food. Findings indicated an overall decrease in mean concentrations over time, though remaining elevated. Black children exhibited higher lead levels than the overall average, while the Asian subgroup displayed higher levels of total blood mercury and cadmium levels. Lack of internal standards in regulatory bodies, particularly the FDA, exacerbates the issue, with no legally enforceable guidelines or strict maximum levels for heavy metals in infant foods. Urgent FDA interventions are needed, addressing contamination at the sources of raw materials, implementing transparent and extensive product testing, and comprehensive manufacturer labeling to inform consumers about elevated heavy metal levels in infant products. 展开更多

Cosmetics that are personal or personalized are now becoming extremely prevalent. While compliance is mandated by European Union(EU)Cosmetics Directive 1223/2009,there seem to be no strict guidelines for maintaining obedience.Cosmetics must meet a number of conditions in order to be sold in the European Single Market;however, the focus of this article is on the Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009.Regulations are examined for certain elements and several solutions are presented that allow for careful use of individually cloaked cosmetics that are available on the market.Metallic nanoparticles(NMs)have been proposed for usage as active ingredients/excipient in a number of cosmetics products.Due to fast-paced businesses in the cosmetic industry, cosmetology tends to focus on its distinctive characteristics to bring value to a diverse array of products, but due to the small size of nanometers,NMs may not always follow the very same handling guidelines as their conventional material. As a result,a nano-specific framework for regulating the use of nanomaterials&creation of nano-improved cosmetics is becoming increasingly prevalent.Scientific and industrial perspective into the NMs presently used for the m arketplace, with an emphasis on metallic NMs,and also an evaluation of the regulatory requirements and Scientific Commission on Consumer Safety(SCCS)Opinions.Considering the fact that the original Cosmetic products Directive(EU Legislation No 1223/2009)has precise restrictions on NMs,beauty materials containing unlawful NMs have already been supplied in the EU on numerous times.Researchers examine the risk evaluation indicated in Article 16 of the Cosmetology Code acts as a framework for the potential expansion to enhance nano-items,considering the long-term risks of nanomaterials if mistreated. The nation’s attention is on synchronizing efforts to integrate metallic NMs into cosmetic products but to the restricted fusion of metallic NMs with numerous non-metallic n anoparticles.Although Directive 76/768/EEC on the beauty items is an upright division of amendment that requires the European market for every cosmetic product placed to meet its exigencies would be irrational that it is for believings a stand-alone part of regulations is unaffected by other legal texts. In reality,D irective 76/768/EEC takes the form part of complicated legal action that began 40 years ago that ensure the free passage of goods throughout the EU while also European individuals’and their environment’s safety. The ongoing chapter outlines the most important aspects of the Directive Cosmetic Products along with the latest guidelines 2022 prepared by the COS law Team of what happened in the EU cosmetics regulatory framework between January and March, which serves as the book’s foundation. The trend of personal skincare seems to be high among clients. 展开更多

Menstrual hygiene products(MHPs)like tampons, sanitary towels and panty liners are widely used by women and come in close contact with the intimate parts of the human body, which consist of mucosae that lack the important barrier function of normal skin.Hence, substances leaching from MHP can easily penetrate and become systemically available. This study aims to develop a new in chemico methodology that allows to identify and measure realistic consumer exposure levels of several skin sensitizers and irritants leaching from MHPs under simulated use conditions. To assess the leaching of chemicals from MHPs,a menstrual fluid simulant(MFS)simulating pH,osmolarity and protein binding was first established.Subsequently,an analytical methodology was developed for nine well-known skin sensitizers and skin irritants. In short, the MFS samples underwent salting-out assisted liquid-liquid extraction before ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with a triple-quadrupole mass spectrometry analysis.Validation was performed according to the total error approach with acceptability limits of±15%regarding the total analytical error(including systematic and random bias).Fifteen commercially available MHPs were assessed.Six products were found to leach at least one of the following five sensitizing and irritating compounds:a-isomethyl ionone, benzyl salicylate, hexyl cinnamaldehyde, linalool and piperonal.Piperonal was the most abundant compound leaching from the MHPs,with leaching concentration levels measured to 28.22 mg/g.In addition, the leaching level of benzyl salicylate was found to be 11.03 mg/g.The latter fragrance concentration is above 10 mg/g and would trigger mandatory labelling if the Cosmetic Regulation would apply for MHPs.However, none of the identified and quantified skin sensitizers were mentioned on the packaging. In conclusion, this novel methodology makes it possible to estimate realistic human exposure levels to skin sensitizers and irritants through the use of MHPs.Availability of these exposure estimates is vital to carry out a quantitative health risk assessment of these substances. 展开更多
