Grice's conversational implicatures have aroused far more attention in linguistics than have his conventional implicatures. The basic idea is that language-activity, most typically, is a kind of rational (and purposive) social interaction governed by the principle of co-operation. In what may now be regarded as his classic formulation of this principle, Grice recognized several kinds of co-operation which he grounded under the headings of quantity, quality, relation and manner. Each of these comprises a set of one or more subprinciples, formulated by Grice as prescriptive maxim, which participants normally obey, but may on occasion flout or violate. Those were analyzed and given examples in sentences and text in this paper. 展开更多

Can pragmatics and especially conversational implicature contribute to the semantic(i.e. conventional, truth-conditional, and propositional) content of a sentence uttered? During the ‘Golden Age of Pure Pragmatics'(GAPP), the answer to this question was straightforwardly negative. In other words, pragmatic intrusion into the semantic content of what is said is not allowed. But time has moved on. It has now been generally accepted in both the philosophy of language and linguistics that contra this ‘received' view, pragmatics and in particular conversational implicature or a variant of it like explicature or impliciture can encroach upon the semantic content of a sentence uttered, and to a less extent that some conversational implicatures may not be cancelled. This article presents a critical discussion and a neo-Gricean analysis of pragmatic and especially conversational implicatural penetration into the semantic content of a sentence uttered, focusing on what Levinson has called intrusive constructions. 展开更多

It is the unity of what is said and what is implicated. Grice's theory of conversational implicature provides some explicit account of how it is possible to mean more than what is literally expressed by the conventional sense of the linguistic expressions uttered. Using this theory, we can infer the speaker's real attention, appreciate figure of speech in literary work, and improve our communicative competence. 展开更多

Sense and Sensibility is Jane Austen’s debut which uses Elinor’s and Marianne’s marriage life as the main line, describing exquisitely and vividly the protagonists’ love and marriage. Since the dialogue is one of the basic ways to shape characters in literary works, the analysis of dialogues, especially that of those contradictory dialogues helps better analyze the novel itself. This paper analyzes different conversational implicatures in the typical dialogues in Sense and Sensibility, in order to help us to understand character differences, and to further understand the novel’ s theme. Through the analysis, this paper finds that there exist many indirect expressions in the dialogues in Sense and Sensibility, which reflect that characters violate the four maxims of Cooperative Principle in order to implicitly express their true thoughts and avoid such unpleasant communicational effects as embarrassment and conflict. 展开更多

Conversation plays an essential and important role in people's daily activities. Conversational implicature is the most basic element in the process of communication and is one of the core concepts in pragmatics. Only if one knows the conversational implicature in the discourse could the communication smoothly move on. Otherwise, it would be difficult to continue. Thus, this paper aims to contribute on the knowledge of the analysis of conversational implicature through making a detailed analysis on Grice's theory of conversational implicature and to help people appropriately use this theory in conversations so as to avoiding unnecessary misunderstanding. It also reveals some limitations of conversational implicature. 展开更多

Humor,as a language art,is considered to be an indispensable form of communication in our daily life. This paper, from the perspective of cooperative principle, takes 8 humorous conversations from the popular sitcom Two Broke Girls as analytical materials to analyze English humor. The humorous effects produced by violating the maxim of quantity, quality, relation and manner in Two Broke Girls are the concrete embodiment of conversational implicature in English humor. The most important part of this paper is the detailed analyses of many examples, which is helpful to the study of the cultural differences between Chinese humor and English humor. Moreover, linking sitcoms to pragmatics can deepen interlocuters’understanding of cooperative principle and the speaker’s implication. As an interdisciplinary subject, therefore, not only can pragmatics be combined with sitcoms, but also applies to other fields. It is hoped that this paper can make future researchers realize the importance of context and delve into other areas from the perspective of cooperative principle. 展开更多

This research aims to examine Chinese EFL learners' performance on a listening comprehension task that focused on linguistic and pragmatic comprehension.Linguistic comprehension requires the listener to understand vocabulary, syntax and other linguistic information, while pragmatic comprehension asks for the listener to understand contextual information, such as the role and status of the interlocutor(Rost 2002).An independent Sample T-test and a correlational study were conducted to explore two main problems. The first one dealt with whether there were developmental differences in the processing of pragmatic meaning and linguistic meaning across two groups of EFL learners with high and low proficiency and their comprehension of two subcomponents of pragmatic meaning — speech acts processing and conversational implicature processing. The second one explored the relationship between comprehension of pragmatic meaning and linguistic meaning, and the relationship between the two subcomponents. 展开更多
