It globally affects 10% - 15% of couples. In Cameroon, little is known about what women do to overcome the psychosocial aspects of the disease. Objectives: This study aimed to identify the support systems and coping strategies of infertile women attending the outpatient consultation unit of the Gynaecological Endoscopic Surgery and Reproductive Teaching Hospital (CHRACERH), Yaoundé, Cameroon. Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted from the 14th of March to the 6th of April 2023 at CHRACERH Yaoundé. A total of 190 participants were recruited using a convenience sampling method. Data regarding socio-demographic characteristics, support systems and coping strategies were collected using a pretested questionnaire. Descriptive and analytic statistics were conducted using SPSS version 25. Results: The mean age of participants was 39.52 ± 7.64 years. The majority 78.9% of participants were workers (public, private sector, or traders) and were Christians 95.8%. The most common source of psychological support was from family 76.8 and husbands 72.63%. Most of the participants 89.5% resorted to prayer and getting busy 48.4% as a coping strategy. There was no statistically significant relationship between coping strategies and psychological disorders p > 0.05. Conclusion: The main support system of participants was family, husband, and friends. Prayer, getting busy and adoption were the most common coping strategies. There is a need for the Ministry of Public Health and other stakeholders to put in place other support systems and coping strategies (FELICIA) used elsewhere and provide adequate health education and infection control to prevent infertility in Cameroon. 展开更多

Five hundred participants completed a short, ten-item measure of coping along with measures of self-esteem, intelligence, belief in a just world (BJW) and conspiracy theories (CT). The scale factored into four recognisable coping styles labelled socio-emotional, cognitive, internalisation and distraction. Correlations showed all factors were related to self-esteem and trait optimism. Regressions onto each factor indicated that self-esteem was the most consistent factor being associated positively with all factors, except internalisation. Younger females with low self-esteem tended to use socio-emotional coping, optimists with high self-esteem cognitive coping, younger, less optimistic people with low self-esteem internalisation and high self-esteem, less intelligent people with BJW distraction as a coping strategy. Implications and limitations are acknowledged. 展开更多

Kidney transplantation(KT)is the optimal form of renal replacement therapy for patients with end-stage renal diseases. However, this health service is not available to all patients, especially in developing countries. The deceased donor KT programs are mostly absent, and the living donor KT centers are scarce.Single-center studies presenting experiences from developing countries usually report a variety of challenges. This review addresses these challenges and the opposing strategies by reviewing the single-center experiences of developing countries. The financial challenges hamper the infrastructural and material availability, coverage of transplant costs, and qualification of medical personnel. The sociocultural challenges influence organ donation, equity of beneficence, and regular follow-up work.Low interests and motives for transplantation may result from high medicolegal responsibilities in KT practice, intense potential psychosocial burdens, complex qualification protocols, and low productivity or compensation for KT practice.Low medical literacy about KT advantages is prevalent among clinicians, patients, and the public. The inefficient organizational and regulatory oversight is translated into inefficient healthcare systems, absent national KT programs and registries, uncoordinated job descriptions and qualification protocols, uncoordinated on-site investigations with regulatory constraints, and the prevalence of commercial KT practices. These challenges resulted in noticeable differences between KT services in developed and developing countries. The coping strategies can be summarized in two main mechanisms:The first mechanism is maximizing the available resources by increasing the rates of living kidney donation, promoting the expertise of medical personnel, reducing material consumption, and supporting the establishment and maintenance of KT programs. The latter warrants the expansion of the public sector and the elimination of non-ethical KT practices. The second mechanism is recruiting external resources, including financial, experience, and training agreements. 展开更多

Type 2 diabetes mellitus contributes to poor health outcomes including mortality, yet there is a gap in the literature when seeking to understand the influence of psychosocial factors on coping in this population. The paper presents a systematic review of quantitative studies that examined relationships among psychosocial determinants and coping in adults with type 2 diabetes. This review is the second layer of knowledge discovery for the concept,"Taking on a life-altering change is a rhythmical journey of experiencing ups and downs on the way to acceptance." The life-altering change was determined to be a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, the journey is the ups and downs of coping with the diagnosis as people work toward acceptance of type 2 diabetes. The review includes a synthesis of findings from 22 quantitative studies of psychosocial factors and coping in adults with type 2 diabetes.Anxiety, depression, stress, and diabetes distress were identified as key influential psychosocial factors.Increased social support was inversely related to emotional distress and coping styles were related to social well-being,psychological health, and physical health outcomes. The positive coping style of problem-focused coping was linked to improved psychological and physical health.Emotional responses to diagnosis were related to depression and anxiety.Negative coping styles of resignation, protest,or isolation were higher in women and linked to poorer quality of life, while avoidance was linked to increased diabetes-related distress and depressive symptoms. 展开更多

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a public health problem that has caused harm to the mental health of healthcare workers. In Africa, the COVID-19 pandemic has led healthcare workers to experience mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, stress, insomnia and burnout. This study aimed to review published studies on the effect of COVID-19 on the mental health of healthcare workers, associated factors and coping strategies that have been employed in Africa. Methods: This was a systematic review that was conducted through searching databases including;PubMed/Medline and Google Scholar. The study included published literature from January 2020 to May 2022 that met the inclusion criteria. The selection of articles was conducted following the 2020 PRISMA guidelines. Results: A total of 39 articles were retrieved, of which only 18 met the inclusion criteria and were used in this study. Our review revealed that healthcare workers experienced mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, stress and burnout that were associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Coping strategies such as religious practices, support from family members and colleagues and avoiding listening to social media about COVID-19 were used to minimize mental health problems. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused increased mental health disorders among healthcare workers in Africa. Identification of factors associated with mental health problems is cardinal in developing coping mechanisms against the psychological impact of COVID-19. Therefore, there is a need for governments to develop and implement strategies for protecting the mental health of healthcare workers during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. 展开更多

The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the microleakage and marginal discrepancy of ceramic crown-copings fabricated by three different CAD/CAM systems. Material and methods: Thirty extracted premolars were prepared for complete all-ceramic crowns with: total convergence 10-degree, 2 mm occlusal reduction, 4.5 mm height, 1.3 mm circular reduction and chamfer marginal preparation. They were divided into three groups and each group (n = 10) received a ceramic crown-coping fabricated by one of three CAD/CAM systems: Procera, KaVo Everest and Cerec inLab. The copings were cemented with Panavia F 2.0. After thermal cycling, the teeth were immersed in 2% basic fuchsine dye for 24 hours. Microleakage was scored using a five-point scale and evaluated under a stereomicroscope at ×18. Marginal discrepancies were assessed with scanning electronic microscope at ×150, with measurements at 50 different points. Data were subjected to a chisquare test, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and using Rho Spearman’s correlation test (P 0.05). No significant differences were found in marginal discrepancies for the Procera (62.58 ± 8.98 μm) and KaVo Everest systems (65.54 ± 18.56 μm), (P = 0.941). Significant differences were found for Cerec inLab (132.18 ± 27.75 μm) compared with Procera and KaVo Everest (P = 0.0001). No correlation between the marginal discrepancies and microleakage for the three CAD/CAM crown-copings systems. Conclusions: Cerec inLab CAD/CAM crown-copings showed significantly higher values for microleakage and marginal discrepancy in comparison with Procera and KaVo Everest CAD/CAM crown-copings. 展开更多

Given the ongoing character of COVID-19, higher-education students encountered multifaceted pressures brought about by thepandemic and had to overcome many difficulties during this period. Accordingly, it is imperative to identify the factors that mayhave protective effects on the social functioning and mental status of college students in the aftermath of COVID-19. This crosssectional study sought to ascertain the internal mechanism of positive coping (PC) styles affecting post-traumatic growth (PTG)and considered the mediating roles of cognitive reappraisal (CR), psychological resilience (PR), and deliberate rumination (DR),which are essential for understanding how and to what extent these factors shaped PTG in the context of the present pandemic. 463Chinese college students recruited via a convenience sampling method completed a set of online self-report measures of PC, PTG,CR, PR and DR. The findings revealed that the abovementioned five variables were positively correlated with each other, and theindependent variable directly predicted the dependent variable. More importantly, two out of three mediators in parallel mediatedthe relationship between PC and PTG, illustrating that more PC adoption was associated with increased PTG through high levels ofPR and DR, respectively. The two significant serial mediating effects also indicated that PC could contribute to CR, which furtherfacilitates either PR or DR and subsequently promotes the development of PTG. Colleges should adopt routine protectivebehaviors in accordance with such evidence to strengthen students’ mental health education and establish scientific methods toboost their psychological well-being. Overall, our results may shed new light on the process of positive adaption and providetheoretical support for targeted crisis intervention during the late phase of the pandemic. 展开更多

Introduction: Work-related stress has become a global issue in the nursing workplace, with about 9.20% - 68.0% of nurses globally experiencing stress. Conversely, work-related stress ranges between 20% and 40% in nursing. Other researchers noted that 35.1% of nurses globally experienced elevated stress levels. Stress can damage well-being and lead to coping, which can, directly and indirectly, improve well-being through a perceived state. Nurses need coping mechanisms to manage their stress levels and maintain stability. Coping mechanisms can vary greatly depending on a nurse’s culture and background. Numerous findings indicate that managing stress is more critical than the cause of stress and that the more successful a stress-management approach, the less damage stress brings. Objective: In response to this, it is necessary to explore Omani nurses’ stress level and their coping strategies working in tertiary governmental hospitals in Muscat. Methods: The sample size for this study was 383 Omani nurses, with a 100% response rate. This study used a descriptive cross-sectional design from 15 October 2020 to 30 November 2020. Samples were selected through proportionate population sampling (PPS) from the five selected tertiary hospitals. Data were collected by self-administered questionnaires using a perceived stress scale and Ways of Coping. A simple random sample within a stratum (each hospital admitting ward) was done to identify the study participants. The sample size for this study was 383 Omani nurses, with a 100% response rate. Results: About 83.3% of participants had a moderate perceived level of stress with an overall mean perceived stress level of 18.46 ± 4.52. The most common sources of perceived stress are feeling nervous and “stressed” in the last month (2.30 ± 0.95). According to the ways of coping strategies, nurses seemed to be resorting to more “planful problem” (mean = 11.04) and least was seeking social support (mean = 9.67). Conclusion: This study highlighted the work-related stress level of staff nurses, explored their ways of coping and determined the relationship between work-related stress levels and methods of coping. The key finding of this study was that the frequency of stress reported by nurses was high enough to suggest that their stress levels were significant, given the demanding nature of their profession that requires maximum attention. Additionally, nurses seemed to resort to more planful problem-solving mechanisms to deal with their stressful situations than other coping strategies. 展开更多

Social-Emotional Competency(SEC),regarded as a critical psychological resource for individuals to adapt to social environments,is an effective protective factor for students’mental health, impacting their future success and well-being.Analyzing the impact of SEC on university students’mental health can offer valuable insights for nurturing talents with healthy psychological and physical development.Based on data from two large-scale surveys of Chinese university students, this study designed two comprehensive Multiple Mediation Models involving SEC,stress, coping strategies, and stress reaction to explore the pathway of emotion nurturing mentality.Study 1 utilized a parallel mediation model to examine the relationships between SEC,academic stress, interpersonal stress, and stress reactions. The results indicated that SEC negatively predicted academic stress, interpersonal stress, and stress reactions.Additionally, academic and interpersonal stress mediated the relationships between SEC and stress reactions in parallel.Extending these findings,Study 2 further investigated the role of coping strategies.By constructing a multiple-chain mediation model,it examined the predictive relationships among SEC,academic stress, interpersonal stress, three types of coping strategies, and stress reactions. The findings indicated that SEC negatively predicted stress, problemavoiding strategy, and stress reactions, while positively predicting problem-solving and assistant-seeking strategies.Furthermore, the two stress types and three coping strategies significantly mediated the relationship between SEC and stress reactions. This indicated that higher SEC was associated with reduced stress and more adaptive coping strategies and subsequently contributed to more favorable stress reactions. This research explored the impact of university students’SEC on mental health and its relational mechanisms, aiming to provide theoretical reference and practical insights for future efforts in cultivating SEC among university students to adjust academic and interpersonal stress,to enhance problem-solving and stress resistance capabilities, and to maintain their mental health. 展开更多

Objective:To explore the effect of cognitive behavioral therapy on self-care in thyroid cancer patients. Methods:A total of 144 thyroid cancer patients treated at the Affiliated Hospital of Hebei University from January 2022 to August 2023 were selected as research subjects.Using the random number table method, they were divided into a control group and an experimental group, each consisting of 72 cases. The control group received routine nursing intervention, while the experimental group received cognitive behavioral therapy based on standard nursing practices. The self-care ability(self-concept,self-efficacy,self-care skills, health knowledge level),coping style(confrontation, avoidance, and surrender),and quality of life(psychological function, social function, material life, physical function)of both groups before and after the intervention were compared. Results:In comparison to the pre-intervention period, the experimental group exhibited significantly higher self-care ability, quality of life, and confrontation scores after the intervention,as opposed to the control group.Additionally, the avoidance and surrender scores were lower in the experimental group than in the control group, with these differences proving to be statistically significant(P<0.01).Conclusion:The application of cognitive behavioral therapy can enhance the self-care ability of thyroid cancer patients, aid in better disease coping, and improve their overall quality of life. This approach is deserving of further promotion. 展开更多

Objective Although stressful life events represent an etiologic factor of mental health problems in adolescents, few studies have been conducted to address mechanisms linking the stress-psychopathology relation. The present study was designed to examine coping as a mediate factor on the relationship between stressful life events and symptoms of anxiety and depression. Methods The participants were 13 512 students from eight cities of China, who participated in a school-based survey. Data were collected by a questionnaire comprising coping, stressful life events, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. As a model, a series of regression equations were used to examine whether coping mediated the association between stressful life events and symptoms of anxiety and depression. Results Each dimension of stressful life events showed significant correlation with anxiety, depression and coping (all P〈0.001). In the model to analyze mediate effects, all standardized coefficients (β) were significant (all P〈0.01), indicating marked mediator effects. Furthermore, negative coping might account for more mediate effects than positive coping on this relationship. Conclusion Coping partially mediated the relationship between stressful life events and mental health during adolescence. This study highlighted an important public health priority for preventive interventions targeting stress-related psychopathology, and for further promoting adolescents' mental health. 展开更多
