Based on the invariance principle of differential equations, sufficient conditions for the global asymptotic synchronization between two bi-directionally coupled chaotic systems via an adaptive feedback controller are given. Unlike other control schemes for bi-directionally coupled systems, this scheme is very simple to implement in practice and need not consider coupling terms. As examples, the autonomous hyperchaotic Chen systems and the new nonautonomous 4D systems are illustrated. Each of these schemes makes the state of the response system asymptotically approach the first-order derivative of the state of the driver. From the point of view of geometry, the first-order derivative of the state of the driver can be viewed as a tangent vector of the trajectory of the driver, so the proposed schemes are named tangent response schemes. Numerical simulations of the Lorenz system and the forced Duffing oscillator verify the validity of the tangent response schemes. We further point out that the tangent response can be interpreted as a special kind of generalised synchronisation, thereby explaining why the response system can exhibit rich geometrical structures in its state space.展开更多

Sufficient conditions for asymptotic synchronization are obtained for general chaotic system with bidirectional coupling via linear error feedback. Since the trajectory of chaotic system is continuous and bounded, one can choose suitable coupled pararneters to satisfy the proposed criterion. The criterion can also be applied to the global synchronization for chaotic systems with linear unidirectional coupling. Follo...The field of environmental sciences is abundant with various interfaces and is the right place for the application of new fundamental approaches leading towards a better understanding of environmental phenomena. Following the definition of environmental interface by Mihailovic and Bala? [1], such interface can be, for example, placed between: human or animal bodies and surrounding air, aquatic species and water and air around them, and natural or artificially built surfaces (vegetation, ice, snow, barren soil, water, urban communities) and the atmosphere, cells and surrounding environment, etc. Complex environmental interface systems are (i) open and hierarchically organised (ii) interactions between their constituent parts are nonlinear, and (iii) their interaction with the surrounding environment is noisy. These systems are therefore very sensitive to initial conditions, deterministic external perturbations and random fluctuations always present in nature. The study of noisy non-equilibrium processes is fundamental for modelling the dynamics of environmental interface regarded as biophysical complex system and for understanding the mechanisms of spatio-temporal pattern formation in contemporary environmental sciences. In this paper we will investigate an aspect of dynamics of energy flow based on the energy balance equation. The energy exchange between interacting environmen- tal interfaces regarded as biophysical complex systems can be represented by coupled maps. Therefore, we will numerically investigate coupled maps representing that exchange. In ana- lysis of behaviour of these maps we applied Lyapunov exponent and cross sample entropy.展开更多

The system is modeled as a double Timoshenko beam system interconnected by discrete springs. Utilizing Chebyshev series expansion and meshing the system according to the locations of its connections, numerical results of the natural frequencies and mode shapes are obtained using only a few elements, and the results are validated by comparing them with the results of a finite-element method. Then the effects of the cable parameters and layout of connections on the natural frequencies and mode shapes of a fixed-pinned beam are studied. The results show that the modes of a beam-cable coupled system can be classified into two types, beam mode and cable mode, according to the dominant deformation. To avoid undesirable vibrations of the cable, its parameters should be controlled in a reasonable range, or the layout of the connections should be optimized.展开更多

The crosstalk of quarter-phase-shift-key signals caused by fiber nonlinearity in polarization multiplexing systems with 100 Cbps bit-rate is investigated and simulated. The results demonstrate that the crosstalk is like a rotated ghosting of input constellation. For the 50 km conventional fiber link, when the total power is less than 4roW, the crosstalk effect can be neglected; when the power is larger than 20roW, the crosstalk is very obvious. In addition, the crosstalk can not be detected according to the output eye diagram and state of polarization in Poincare sphere in the trunk fiber, making it difficult for the monitoring of optical trunk link.展开更多

Therefore, the concept of truncated mooring system is implemented to replace the full depth mooring system in the model tests, which aims to have the same dynamic responses as the full depth system. The truncated mooring system plays such a significant role that extra attention should be paid to the mooring systems with large truncation factor. Three different types of large truncation factor mooring system are being employed in the simulations, including the homogenously truncated mooring system, non-homogenously truncated mooring system and simplified truncated mooring system. A catenary moored semi-submersible operating at 1000 m water depth is presented. In addition, truncated mooring systems are proposed at the truncated water depth of 200 m. In order to explore the applicability of these truncated mooring systems, numerical simulations of the platform’s surge free decay interacting with three different styles of truncated mooring systems are studied in calm water. Furthermore, the mooring-induced damping of the truncated mooring systems is simulated in the regular wave. Finally, the platform motion responses and mooring line dynamics are simulated in irregular wave. All these simulations are implemented by employing full time domain coupled dynamic analysis, and the results are compared with those of the full depth simulations in the same cases. The results show that the mooring-induced damping plays a significant role in platform motion responses, and all truncated mooring systems are suitable for model tests with appropriate truncated mooring line diameters. However, a large diameter is needed for simplified truncated mooring lines. The suggestions are given to the selection of truncated mooring system for different situations as well as to the truncated mooring design criteria.展开更多
