The influences of large earthquake signals on the recovery of surface waves from ambient noise cross-correlation functions

Ambient noise tomography(ANT)has been widely used to image crust and upmost mantle structures.ANT assumes that sources of ambient noise are diffuse and evenly distributed in space and the energy of different modes is equipartitioned.At present,the sources of the primary and the secondary microseisms are well studied,but there are only a few on the studies of long-period ambient noise sources.In this study,we study the effects of large earthquake signals on the recovery of surface waves from seismic ambient noise data recorded by seismic stations from the US permanent networks and Global Seismographic Network(GSN).Our results show that large earthquake signals play an important role on the recovery of long-period surface waves from ambient noise cross-correlation functions.Our results are consistent with previous studies that suggest the contribution of earthquake signals to the recovery of surface waves from cross-correlations of ambient noise is dominant at periods larger than 20–40 s. 展开更多

In order to solve the problem of ambiguous acquisition of BOC signals caused by its property of multiple peaks,an unambiguous acquisition algorithm named reconstruction of sub cross-correlation cancellation technique(RSCCT)for BOC(kn,n)signals is proposed.In this paper,the principle of signal decomposition is combined with the traditional acquisition algorithm structure,and then based on the method of reconstructing the correlation function.The method firstly gets the sub-pseudorandom noise(PRN)code by decomposing the local PRN code,then uses BOC(kn,n)and the sub-PRN code cross-correlation to get the sub cross-correlation function.Finally,the correlation peak with a single peak is obtained by reconstructing the sub cross-correlation function so that the ambiguities of BOC acquisition are removed.The simulation shows that RSCCT can completely eliminate the side peaks of BOC(kn,n)group signals while maintaining the narrow correlation of BOC,and its computational complexity is equivalent to sub carrier phase cancellation(SCPC)and autocorrelation side-peak cancellation technique(ASPeCT),and it reduces the computational complexity relative to BPSK-like.For BOC(n,n),the acquisition sensitivity of RSCCT is 3.25 dB,0.81 dB and 0.25 dB higher than binary phase shift keying(BPSK)-like,SCPC and ASPeCT at the acquisition probability of 90%,respectively.The peak to average power ratio is 1.91,3.0 and 3.7 times higher than ASPeCT,SCPC and BPSK-like at SNR=–20 dB,respectively.For BOC(2n,n),the acquisition sensitivity of RSCCT is 5.5 dB,1.25 dB and 2.69 dB higher than BPSK-like,SCPC and ASPeCT at the acquisition probability of 90%,respectively.The peak to average power ratio is 1.02,1.68 and 2.12 times higher than ASPeCT,SCPC and BPSK-like at SNR=–20 dB,respectively. 展开更多

It is found that the cross-correlation between different leads of a healthy young subject is larger than that of a healthy old subject. A method of combining Green’s function retrieval theory and ultrasonic array imaging using Lamb waves is presented to solve near filed defects in thin aluminum plates.The defects are close to the ultrasonic phased array and satisfy the near field calculation formula.Near field acoustic information of defects is obscured by the nonlinear effects of initial wave signal in a directly acquired response using the full matrix capture mode.A reconstructed full matrix of inter-element responses is produced from cross-correlation of directly received ultrasonic signals between sensor pairs.This new matrix eliminates the nonlinear interference and restores the near-field defect information.The topological imaging method that was developed in recent ultrasonic inspection is used for displaying the scatterers.The experiments are conducted on both thin aluminum plates containing two and four defects, respectively.The results show that these defects are clearly identified when using a reconstructed full matrix.The spatial resolution is equal to about one wavelength of the selectively excited mode and the identifiable defect is about one fifth of the wavelength.However, in a conventional directly captured image,the images of defects overlap together and cannot be distinguished.The proposed method reduces the background noise and allows for effective topological imaging of near field defects. 展开更多

Estimated Green’s function (EGF) between stations has been extracted from ambient seismic noise, direct surface wave and coda waves. It is also confirmed by laboratory experiments on ultrasonics and theoretical derivations assuming diffusive wave field, equi-partition of modes or random sources on an enclosed surface. This method provides a new approach to study the crust and mantle structure at regional scale, continental scale and global scale. Following the achievements with seismometer records, the records of infrasonic station, hydrophone and microphone were also used to obtain the EGFs of different wave fields. Since superconducting gravimeter is a better long period instrument than regular seismometer, EGF at longer period is expected to be obtained with the cross correlation of gravity data. In this paper, we will show the EGFs extracted by cross-correlations between the superconducting gravimeters and the seismometers. Both the travel times and dispersion curves obtained from different data types are consistent. The result shows that it is possible to retrieve the deep structure by the cross correlation of gravity data. 展开更多

In order to measure the correlation propeties of two Boolean functions,the global avalanche characteristics of Boolean functions constructed by concatenation are discussed,i.e.,f_1‖f_2and f_1‖f_2‖f_3‖f_4.Firstly,for the function f = f_1‖f_2,the cross-correlation function of f_1,f_2 in the special condition are studied.In this case,f,f_1,f_2 must be in desired form.By computing their sum-of-squares indicators,the crosscorrelation function between f_1,f_2 is obtained.Secondly,for the function g = f_1‖f_2‖f_3‖f_4,by analyzing the relation among their auto-correlation functions,their sum-of-squares indicators are investigated.Based on them,the sum-of-squares indicators of functions obtained by Canteaut et al.are investigated.The results show that the correlation property of g is good when the correlation properties of Boolean functions f_1,f_2,f_3,f_4 are good. 展开更多

Fast estimation of distance between two hydrophones using ocean ambient noise in multi-ship scenarios

Accurately estimating the bearing of a target with two hydrophones requires knowing the precise distance between them.However,in practice,it is difficult to measure this distance accurately due to the influence of current.To solve this problem,we propose a method for extracting the time-domain Green's function between two points in multi-ship scenarios and for extracting the time-domain waveform arrival structure between two hydrophones in real-time based on long samples of ship radiation noise cross-correlation.Using the cross-correlation function of the radiated noise from any ship located in the end-fire direction of the two hydrophones,we can estimate the distance between the hydrophones in real-time.To verify the accuracy of our estimation,we compare the result of azimuth estimation with the actual azimuth based on the azimuth estimation of a cooperative sound source in the maritime environment.Our experimental results show that the proposed method correctly estimates the distance between two hydrophones that cannot be directly measured and estimates the position of a cooperative sound source 4 km away with an average deviation of less than 1.2°. 展开更多

Five task types of geometric problems are used for the collection of task-evoked fMRI data. Although there was no gender-difference in task performance, we found gender differences in neural activity. Some of the important gender differences that we found are 1) that there are far more joint neuro-activations among the brain regions, co-activations or reverse-activations, in males than in females, 2) that the two types of joint activations were nearly half and half in females while it was mostly co-activations in males, 3) that males tend to have more co-activations in the left hemisphere than expected while females tend to have more between-hemisphere co-activations than expected, and 4) that the left-right pairs of BA's are more highly associated than average for males while they are far less associated than average for females. 展开更多

Using the cross correlation function analysis method, this paper discusses shear wave splitting and crack-inducedanisotropy in the crust beneath Tangshan, North China, by the digital data from Tangshan strong ground monon temporary arrays. Sixteen of twenty-one stations in the arrays recorded earthquake events available forstudying from 1982 to 1984. Having calculated 131 available records, we get slower shear wave time delay r andfaster shear wave polarization azimuth Paz in Tangshan region, and the cracks density s is got further fromthem. The analysis shows that the stress field is very complicated in Tangshan region and has strongly regionalfeature. Because of the complicated distribution of faults, different shear wave splitting characteristics are shownin 16 stations, scattered r and different Paz. And they also were observed that the r and PaZ values were diversewithin the time scale of hours in more than one station. In Tangshan region the average results of r, Paz and Bare 0. 0071 s. km-1, northwest-west near to east-west and 0.022 respectively. Recently, generalized global avalanche characteristics (GGAC) were introduced to measure the correlation between two arbitrary Boolean functions. In this paper, to better evaluate the security of an S-box, we present two cross-correlation indicators for it. Sixteen indole derivatives have been computed at B3LYP/6-31 IG^** level using density functional theory (DFF). Based on linear solvation energy theory, the structural parameters were employed to present correlation between the parameters of chromatograph capacity factor (CCF) and molecular structural parameters. As a result, the correlation equation of the reversed phased high performance liquid chromatograph capacity factor to the intercept lgk'w and slope S of CCF were obtained, from which the correlation coefficients of lgk'w to the structural parameters are r^2 = 0.9596 and q^2 = 0.9262. While the correlation coefficients of the parameter S r^2 q^2 with structures are = 0.9750 and = 0.9252. Moreover, the effect of water as solvent on the present two models was also considered using SCRF method, and the result shows that the predicting capacity of correlation equation of lgkw' increases, while that of the model for S decreases slightly. Both two correlation equations achieved in this work are more advantageous than those using theoretical descriptors from molecular connectivity indices. 展开更多

In this paper,we propose a stochastic channel model in three-dimensional(3D)space for multiple input multiple output(MIMO)vehicle-to-vehicle(V2V)communications in dense urban environments.The movement of the mobile transmitter and mobile receiver results in the V2V channel model behave temporal non-stationarity.Therefore,the time-varying parameters of the propagation paths and angles are derived to characterize such property.Using this channel model,we investigate the propagation characteristics of V2V channels in terms of the road section and moving time/directions/speeds of the transmitter and receiver.Numerical results show that the theoretical results of the propagation characteristics of the V2V channel model are very close to those of the simulation ones,which show that the proposed channel model is suitable for depicting the V2V communications in dense urban scenarios. 展开更多

Passive acoustic monitoring has the potential to be a useful tool for population estimation of sound-producing fish and mammals(mostly whales).Previous work on population estimates of callers employed a simple cross-correlation technique with recordings from two acoustic sensors,and the current work extends the technique to two configurations of a 3-acoustic sensors array using two different sounds,i.e.,chirps which is commonly generated by damselfish(Dascyllus aruanus),humpback whales(Megaptera novaeangliae),dugongs(Dugong dugon)etc.,species,and grunts which is commonly generated by Japanese gurnard(Chelidonichthys kumu),Grey gurnard(Eutrigla gurnardus),gulf toadfish(O.beta),etc.,species.We compared simulated results from this technique with values determined by theoretical approach.We have found that an increasing number of cross-correlation function(CCF)provide better results using this technique.However,the technique has some limitations including negligence of multipath interference,assuming the delays to be integer. 展开更多

The results show that:( 1) When the level scaling factor is smaller,the signal to noise ratio of the waveform after the deconvolution is smaller,and when the level scaling factor is over smaller,the identification error of travel time is greater.( 2) When the SNR of the station record is higher,the recognition accuracy of travel time is higher,the influence of SNR on the reference station record is far greater than the far station,when the SNR of the far station record is more than 10,the error of travel time is within6 ms,but when the SNR of the reference station record is 30,the travel time error may reach to 20 ms.( 3) When the airgun source difference is big,the frequency domain waterlevel deconvolution method has better effect on eliminating the source influence,but the method error may be introduced when the source difference is small. 展开更多

Detecting subsurface fault structure is important for evaluating potential earthquake risks associated with active faults.In this study,we propose a new method to detect faults using reflected surface waves observed in ambient noise cross correlation functions.Ambient noise tomography using direct surface waves obtained from ambient noise interferometry has been widely used to characterize active fault zones.In cases where a strong velocity contrast exists across the fault interface,fault-reflected surface waves are expected.We test this idea using a linear array deployed in the Suqian segment of Tanlu fault zone in Eastern China.The fault-reflected surface waves can be clearly seen in the cross-correlation functions of the ambient noise data,and the spatial position of the fault on the surface is close to the stations where the reflected signals first appear.Potentially reflected surface waves could also be used to infer the dip angle,fault zone thickness and the degree of velocity contrast across the fault by comparing synthetic and observed waveforms. 展开更多

A measurement profile consisted of 5 sites from Xinyang to Tangyin in Henan Province was set up in September of 1996 to carry out simultaneous observation of Pi2 geomagnetic pulsations. Simultaneity of Pi2 geomagnetic pulsation occurrence along the N-S profile was investigated. Results of analysis pointed out that Pi2 gcomagnetic pulsations appeared at first at the site of Xinyang at the southern end of the profile, the later the same Pi2 geomag netic pulsation appeared, the more north the site was at. Apparent propagation speed of Pi2 in N-S direction in the region is about 140 kin/s. Because Pi2 geomagnetic pulsation varying with time is of instability, and based on characteristics that basic wavelet can be dilated and localized, we selected proper basic wavelat form and by means of wavelet transform to analyze the changes of periods and amplitudes of main periodic components included in Pi2 pulsations with time. The results show that there existed complex form in periods and amplitudes of wavelet varying with time. 展开更多
