Strategies for recruiting a sample of adults with type 2 diabetes from primary care clinics in rural Appalachia: Incorporating cultural competence

Background:Recruiting research participants from primary care in rural Appalachia is a major challenge and can be influenced by cultural characteristics,making it critically important to incorporate strategies of cultural competence in the overall design of clinical research.Objectives:The purpose of this paper is to describe culturally competent strategies used for recruitment and data collection with a sample of adults with type 2 diabetes from primary care settings in Appalachia.Design:The Purnell model of cultural competence and relevant literature served as a framework for study design.Four overarching approaches informed the organization of recruitment strategies and development of the data collection plan.Procedures:The approaches included selection of research sites,establishing collaborations,sustaining collaborative relationships,and enhancing understanding of benefits of participation.Four recruitment sites were selected based on potential to enhance diversification of participants;multiple steps were included in each of the three remaining approaches to build relationships and gain participation.A study log was maintained to provide evaluation data.Results:Recruitment took 14 months and a sample of 102 subjects provided consent with 101 participants providing complete data.Demographics were representative of the region except that African American participation was higher(6.9%)compared to current north central Appalachia(3%).Over 72%of participants indicated they would be interested in participating in future studies.Conclusions:These findings emphasize the importance of employing strategies for cultural competence in study design.Use of concepts from the Purnell model led to enhanced representativeness and potential for subsequent generalizability.

Evolution of Environmental Culture Characteristics in Construction of New Countryside:Case in Beautiful Country of Yuezhao Community,Zhongshan District

Beautiful country of Yuezhao Community,Zhongshan District is taken as the case.By digging cultural characteristics and connotation of historic buildings and integrating historical culture resources,protection region of historic site is formed.By analyzing construction condition and environment of status quo and combining surrounding natural environment,greening and activity places are arranged in the area unsuitable for construction,and landscape node rich in local culture characteristics is created.In the planning,it should sufficiently respect layout of the existing buildings,making planning region become a new rural residential community in the new era that local culture atmosphere is rich;the planned buildings have the same skin textures with original buildings and harmoniously coexist with natural environment.

Biological characteristics of marine bacterium S-9801 strain and its culture conditions of pigment production

Strain of Flavobacterium sp.(S-9801),was screened from 207 strains of marine bacteria isolated from the Bohai Sea continental shelf and the Zhujiang Estuary,for its red pigment production.The biological characteristics of strain S-9801 and culture conditions of pigment production have been checked out in this study. The color of the bacterial colony on 2216E medium was from coccineus to rose bengal. Optimum culture conditions were sodium chloride concentration(g/dm3),10～30;pH,3～8;temperature,25～28℃;tryptone and yeast extract as nitrogen sources and glucose as carbon source. Under optimum conditions,pigment accumulation started after 12 h,reaching a maximum rate of synthesis at 36 h.

Thoughts on the Development of Characteristic Cultural Tourism Products of the Republic of Vanuatu

Vanuatu is an underdeveloped country,but it is rich in tourism resources and has become an increasingly popular tourist destination.Tourism is one of the pillar industries of national economy.At present,the core component of Vanuatu’s tourism consumption structure is the basic elements based on accommodation,transportation and catering.However,the proportion of shopping,sightseeing and entertainment,which are factors of tourism value-added consumption,is very low.Therefore,it is urgent to improve efficiency and quality of tourism.This study suggested that Vanuatu develop characteristic cultural tourism products in multiple dimensions,build its characteristic cultural tourism pedestrian streets,make cultural tourism products with food tourism as the theme,create a brand series of Vanuatu characteristic tourist souvenirs,design the characteristic homestay experience with "slow tourism" as the core and optimize the structure of tourism consumption in Vanuatu to improve its cultural influence and the level of modern service industry and realize the optimization and upgrading of the industrial structure.

Further promotion of urbanization has resulted in the broken integrity of architectural environment and cultural system of traditional villages, and some traditional villages with historical architectural styles have been on the verge of extinction. Against the background of building "beautiful Zhejiang and good life", Ningbo City has to optimize the livable environment continuously, integrate natural, humanistic, green, characteristic and comfortable elements into the beautiful countryside construction, thus it is urgent to explore the cultural characteristics and functions of architectural environment in traditional villages. Cultural characteristics and functions of architectural environment in traditional villages of Ningbo should be more systematic, legalized, and scientific. This paper reviewed concepts and cultural connotations of traditional villages, and integrated cultural characteristics and functions of regional architectural environment in traditional villages of Ningbo, and provided references for theoretic researches on the formation of characteristic regional architectural cultures in traditional villages of Ningbo.

Research on domestic characteristic towns: A review

As an important starting point for promoting new-type urbanization and an important platform for advancing supply-side structural reform, characteristic towns have gained strong support at the national policy level and have been rapidly promoted in practice. However, on the academic research level, the research of characteristic towns is lack of systematic. Under these circumstances, this article summarizes the current research on the characteristic town in our country, and makes relevant research and evaluation, with a view to providing reference and basis for further research on the characteristic town.

Historical Contributions and Innovative Development of China's Inclusive Culture

Inclusive culture is a dynamic pattern of cultural integration and innovative development formed in the interactions between man and nature, man and society, and man and others. Chinese culture is among the sources of inclusive culture. Being inheritable, open, assimilative, innovative and self–driven, this inclusive culture significantly contributes to China's ideological evolution, ethnic integration, religious development, economic openness, literature and art prosperity, as well as political wisdom in building a community with a shared future for mankind. Inclusiveness is key to the lasting and sustainable development of traditional Chinese culture. During China's construction of a great modern socialist country, the CPC's leadership over cultural innovation and development must be strengthened; a strong cultural confidence must always be maintained; the prosperity of socialist culture with Chinese characteristics must be further enhanced; the sustainable and integrated development of socialist culture with Chinese characteristics must be promoted; people's need for an enriched cultural life must be satisfied; and more efforts must be made to build a community with a shared future for mankind. Isolation and in vitro cultivation of Babesia venatorum(Apicomplexa:Babesiidae),a zoonotic hemoprotozoan from Ixodes persulcatus ticks in China

The emerging Babesia venatorum upsurges as a potential health threat occurring in China and other endemic countries.Few attempts to isolate and culture the Babesia species had been conducted in vitro.We collected the questing Ixodes persulcatus from identified endemic areas and allowed them to feed on the severe combined immunodeficiency(SCID)mice.The positive mice were chosen to provide positive erythrocytes with asexual B.venatorum for continuous culture in mouse or human erythrocytes in vitro,with RPMI 1640 medium and appropriate serum.With B.venatorum in the SCID mice,erythrocytes were cultured in vitro for confirmation by morphological observations with transmission electron microscopes.Sequences of B.venatorum were then identified by way of conventional PCR amplification.Parasitemia counts monitored the growth of B.venatorum on thin blood smears and real-time quantitative PCR in parallel.As expected,B.venatorum positive mice were harvested by sufficient attacks of I.persulcatus ticks.The erythrocytes of the infected mice were then inoculated and successfully cultured in donated erythrocytes from humans and mice in RPMI 1640 culture medium.Active growth of B.venatorum was well demonstrated in human erythrocytes with 3.3 times parasite-load when compared with a mouse under similar conditions.With the increased subcultures,a prolonged period of detectable parasitemia with much higher peak parasitemia and shorter time to reach peak parasitemia were observed in the following subcultures.A new strategy for isolation and in vitro culture of B.venatorum has been provided with a continuous supply of sufficient pathogens to satisfy human babesiosis's testings and clinical therapies.
